This book is an extraordinary gift to those of us trying to make a positive difference in our world; a sobering and yet, uplifting teaching that methodically takes us from ignorance to realization in our personal journey. It is beautiful and clear-sighted but most importantly, it is rooted in compassion. I am deeply grateful for her courageous insight and wisdom.” ―Dekila Chungyalpa, founder and director of Sacred Earth at the World Wildlife Fund, Environmental Coordinator for His Holiness the 17th Karmapa, and Associate Research Scientist at Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies“The wisdom that Roshi Joan Halifax has distilled from her work with cancer patients, clinicians, teachers, disaster relief workers, CEOs, and Zen students is all here, recast into a guide to the way we live now that is urgent, principled, practical, and deftly psychological. An astonishing gift.” ―Anthony Back, MD, professor at University of Washington, Cambia Palliative Care Center of Excellence, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and founder of VitalTalk“I thought I knew these words: altruism, empathy, integrity, respect, and engagement. Not until I read this book did I realize that I have not really understood the words thoroughly. This book is a result of the author’s long years of spiritual practice and service. It is a book in which one needs to anchor oneself in order to survive the stormy sea of our present reality.” ―Dhammananda Bhikkhuni, the first Bhikkhuni in Theravada Buddhism in Thailand and abbess of Songdhammakalyani Monastery “Standing at the Edge arrives at a critical moment in history, when the world is searching for a new way to reconnect with the deep roots of our spirituality. The book is profoundly engaging and ruthlessly poetic. It is a vital exploration of how we can transform this world through compassionate action.” ―Dr. A. T. Ariyaratne, founder and president of the Sarvodaya Shramadana Movement in Sri Lanka“I love this book. Standing at the Edge places Roshi alongside our greatest teachers and practitioners―Pema Chodron, Thich Nhat Hanh, Gandhi, Dorothy Day, Thomas Merton, and Dr. King. Reading it, I was reminded of the old adage: ‘Don’t just do something―stand there!’ By exploring the big themes of altruism, empathy, integrity, respect, engagement, and compassion, Roshi helps us to take a stand in a bad time, and to know where we stand, and to stand there in the fullness of wisdom and compassion. Given our violent, inhuman world, this timely book will help us become more nonviolent and more human, to do our part for a more nonviolent world. With Roshi as our guide, we, too, can stand at the edge, learn to see a new vision of humanity and enter into universal compassion, nonviolence, and peace. What a gift!” ―Father John Dear, author of The Nonviolent Life and The Beatitudes of Peace“Standing at the Edge is a must-read not only for all clinicians but for anyone who is caring for others in their suffering. Roshi Joan has a gift to transform the complexity of scientific, theological, and philosophical theories into practical models for everyone to express compassion to others. She enables us to being able to sit in the midst of the other’s suffering―offering presence and love.” ―Christina Puchalski, MD, OCDS, Professor of Medicine, Director of the George Washington University’s Institute for Spirituality and Health, author of Time for Listening and Caring, and coauthor of Making Healthcare Whole “At this precipitous moment of history, when so many of us are unbalanced and suffering, Roshi Joan Halifax offers us a modern classic. Her essential wisdom, compassion, and experience dare to lead us―as it has led her―in and through the dark places of our lives and minds, to a ground of steadfast clarity. With stories and accessible practices, documented by cutting-edge research, Halifax points the way to our own ease and completeness.” ―Sensei Hozan Alan Senauke, Clear View Project“With the clear eyes of a social scientist and the warm heart of a Buddhist, Roshi Joan explores those liminal spaces where burnout is transformed into recalibration, empathy grows the wings of wisdom, and in tending the broken heart of the world we are brought home to our fullest humanity.” ―Mirabai Starr, translator of John of the Cross, Teresa of Avila, and Julian of Norwich, and author of Caravan of No Despair: A Memoir of Loss and Transformation“Through her insightful reflection and intimate research, Roshi Joan maps the dividing points between our failures and genuine, wholesome activities. Standing at the Edge is a most generous gift from her lifetime of meditation, deep thinking, and amazing scale of service to society.” ―Kazuaki Tanahashi, author of Painting Peace: Art in a Time of Global Crisis“A must-have guidebook for altruists, seekers, caregivers, and all those wishing to make a difference. Standing at the Edge reminds us that good intentions are not enough to change the world; Nothing short of deep inner work―both contemplative and psychological―is required. Roshi Joan’s voice, fierce and wise, reveals the edge as a place where true spiritual transformation happens.” ―Cheryl A. Giles, PsyD and Willa B. Miller, PhD, authors of The Arts of Contemplative Care “Joan Halifax shares with us the wise insights derived from a life of deep inquiry and service to others. This is a work of heart and of substance.” ―Hal Roth, author of Original Tao: Inward Training and the Foundations of Taoist Mysticism, Professor of Religious Studies, and Director of the Brown University Program in Contemplative Studies

What I love about this new book by Roshi Joan Halifax is how she reaches out through her beautiful and careful words to the heart of each reader, with "life-giving hands" as she calls the engagement of compassion. You can feel her personally touching you as you read. Wherever you are in your life and work, she's been there and she knows how hard it is to stay on track, to stay energized and loving, to be the best version of a human one can be. I felt her openness to my goodness as well as my shadow self, as if she's rooting for me and all of us to wake up, relax, love, grow and do the good work the world needs us to do. I'll keep this book close--a guidebook for life in our times.

Walking with others on the path of care is what gives me a sense of hope. But it can also be a tenuous journey on which we come to face our shadow-sides in the thick of what Joan Halifax calls “edge states.” For the broad spectrum of caregivers we are and need to be: parents, teachers, neighbors, community organizers - voters! - as well as professional social workers, hospital/prison chaplains, counselors, psychotherapists, medical professionals, and social justice advocates, Roshi Halifax provides both philosophical wisdom and practical skillfulness in how we can navigate that path courageously and wholesomely, with both compassion and equanimity in tact. Maintaining a “soft front and strong back,” we can sustainably nourish ourselves and care for others, without spiraling down into the collapse of empathic distress and caregiver burnout. Living in a time when our well-being depend on care, I can’t think of a more important perspective to share. This is a beautifully written and truly inspiring book, and I am so grateful for the support it offers.

This is such an important book for all those in any of the helping professions, as it discusses the 'edge' between appropriate and necessary care of others and 'falling off or over the edge' into apathy or distress. And there is so much more, so it is very useful for activist and those that are noting disapproval and outrage towards what is happening in the US and in other parts of the world at this time. Roshi Joan's writing is simple yet effectively, helps one to understand and feel what appropriate and inappropriate empathy, altruism, integrity, respect and engagement are like. She also offers simple and effect practices for those times when we do fall over or off those edges. The book is filled with personal anecdotes from her own life which only adds to the authenticity of what she is conveying. As such, this book is for everyone, not just professionals and caregivers. Highly recommended!

I read a lot of books, always in search of motivation or some new nugget to help process my own thinking/feeling and the world around me. So many books on EQ, enlightenment, self help, etc. speak to us almost as children in need of a lecture - or almost presents life and emotions as a game that needs to be won. This book is so thoughtful, beautiful, easy to read, easy to understand and integrate...it is so smart! And yet, reading this book is like sitting with a trusted, enlightened friend who speaks as if we are all equals, students on a journey. Roshi Joan Halifax is so thoughtful and grounded; she is clearly very far along in her journey, but never-ever makes us feel that we're behind. So refreshing. Regardless of what brought you here to consider this book, buy/read this book. This is easily the best book I've read in a very long time. Highly recommend. Safe travels.

Despite wanting to read this book slowly, I found myself rocketing along because Roshi Joan Halifax’s writing is so beautiful and riveting. Whether fast or slow, you will want to read it again and again to appreciate the wisdom she offers so generously. This is a true masterwork – do not miss it.

I have read Halifax before and she is a truly wise woman. She looks at what she calls Edge States and what can happen when we slip over them. These are all virtues by any religious or moral view: altruism, empathy., integrity, respect and engagement. Yet with all of them, it's possible to stand at the top, happy with one's efforts, and then slide off into the slough. For example, empathy can turn into distress, integrity into moral suffering, engagement can result in overwork and burnout. Roshi Joan Halifax has many years of experience as an antropologist, Buddhist teacher, and caregiver to the dying. She has many years a founder, abbot, and head teacher of the Upaya Institute and Zen Center, in Santa Fe.He Buddhist beliefs do not keep this from being an outstanding book for anyone of any religious belief, or non-belief.

This book is, plain and simply, beautiful. It is real, it is wise, it is practical. And it is human.I was fortunate to be with Roshi Joan in Seattle when she first held her new book, this book, at its national release. She said when looking at its cover and touching it with embodied gentleness: “It’s a beautiful, isn’t it?” And it is.Understanding edge states has already had a profound impact upon my life, at work, at home; with my colleagues and with my family. I’ve already begun sharing it with others—and its impact is being realized. It’s true (and it’s still a choice we can all make): “Compassion is not a luxury, it is a necessity.” And we need it more than ever. We are compassionate by nature—we just need to wake up, engage, and realize what will best serve in each and every moment...with grace and G.R.A.C.E. Standing at the edge takes courage—but we have to understand and realize that we are there and that, when there, in those moments, we have a choice and an opportunity.Thank you Roshi, for being you and for this gift. May it find a wide audience so that its light can warm this cold world—if only this one little corner of it.

I bought this book for my writing / English class. I think I got a good deal on it compared to the book store. My only complaint is the book is very heavy and fragile. The pages tear very easily. The book can be written in, I assume they made it this way.

The material is a little weird. They take too long to simplify rhetorical arguments, and some of the essays for examples given weren't that great. I can't remember this one essay, I believe it was over trying to argue in a fair and balanced view without going offensive. More like an opposites attract for common goal type essay that fell flat. It just wasn't good, and the arguments of both side were too weak and unexplained. But that was my only complaint

Great book needed it for school and still have it, I like the variety of readings, and that's probably the biggest strength of the book; I don't know of a single other reader with such a range, and a well-chosen range at that. The organization (section naming, particularly) could use some work - lots of repetition and names that don't really tell me anything when I'm searching for something. I also don't see myself using any of the large amount of the book dedicated to talking about MLA, APA, or visual arguments given there's so many digital resources that do it better.

REALLY unimpressed with the condition of this book. I was surprised when I received this as a rental textbook (granted, it was about $35) and saw that the cover was beat up, ripped in several places. A few pages seemed loose, and the spine was cracked.I'm not quite half-way through my class this semester and the book straight-up ripped in half when I shifted it closer to me on my desk today! This is ridiculous, and they better not charge me for "damage," because the condition the book was in when it came to be isn't my fault. The book is now in two halves because of it's already-split spine. I can't believe it.

I believe that the textbook "Everything's an Argument/with Readings" has a really great technique in showing that anything is a possible argument. I really love how the book, edition 5, is up to date in the happenings in the world around us, which makes it easier to relate to each argument discussed. This book really goes into great depth in explaining how to read an argument, write an argument, how to recognize style and present arguments, how to evaluate arguments, and arguments itself. I found this book to be very helpful in understanding different contexts of argumentation and representation in each context. There are so many things found in this book that I would have never looked at as an argument. There are so many different types of arguments surrounding us in forms of pictures, articles, videos, cartoons, and many more. The evaluations of this book truly opened my eyes to the different views on not only argumentation but also the knowledge and ideas that go into an argument. This is a book you need to read if you want to know anything and everything about argumentation.

Its a required book for school..think that says it all (my college sons words lol).

Very useful. Used it for my English college class and saved money by renting it. It has a few examples of everything so you are able to learn how to write properly.

My son rented this book for a community college course. This worked great! Will definitely consider again in the future.

I have shopped in the grocery store of parenting books since our first was born 7 years ago. We now have 3, and I was really looking forward to reading this book. The format of the book does not appeal to me. The book is based on a series of group sessions the authors had with some parents over a period of time. It's verbose, and not terribly compelling. I think it could be summarized in about 10 pages, but then their wouldn't be a book. While I find some of the "techniques" and "observations" to have merit, I don't feel they are grounded in anything but the authors experience. This is not a Carol Dweck, or an Angela Duckworth. Faber does not have a PhD in Psychology, and Mazlish did not either, at the time of her passing in 2017. I would also say much of the book is too simplistic, not realistic, and I think part of the reason is that the authors simply do not have the grounding that trained psychologists do. They spend about 2% of the book on what to do when children are physical with one another. I felt their coverage of the subject to be completely lacking. I'll keep up the search for a better book on siblings.

Arrived on time. Great book. Easy read. Practical advice. I immediatly implemented a couple of the suggestions and tantrums (from our spectum child) eased tremendously. All kids want to be heard and understood; not shut down when they show an emotion. While you can't act with out consequences this book teaches acknowledgement.

This book is truly phenomenal. I was riveted. It has helped me tremendously not only with my two children (3 and 1), but with my other family members as well. Problem solving, conflict resolution, listening, and love are all covered in this essential guide to living happily with others.

Was familiar with the authors from a previous book, this one is an absolute gold mine of information! Very well written, easy to read, sums up everything you need to know and how to apply everything and MOSTLY, IT WORKS!!!! No matter the age of the siblings - up to late adulthood - this is truly amazing information to make siblings relationship work. I loved all the many examples. I think it really cheers everything about that subject.

Amazing insights. I was terrified when I found out our upcoming child would create the same older bro younger sis dynamic I had with my brother that has been pretty traumatic. I blamed birth order but I’m reading this book I see so many ways to improve sibling relations, things I would never have thought of. It made me look at my sibling relationship very differently and realize that it’s not birth order or how many kids or rich or poor - it’s just how you raise them. Amazing book. Devoured it in 24 hrs

Beat money I have ever spent. My 3.5 y.o and 1.5 y.o daughters went from not being able to be in the same room without supervision to loving each other and playing together in a healthy way. There is still conflict between them but we deal with it in a way that doesn't create resentment. This all happened within a few days after I implemented the practices described in this book. I am reading the book again ti make sure it all stinks in!

wow, super helpful. My kids are 4 and 1 and it is useful even to me! And it's interesting looking back on having two siblings. Wish my parents would have read this book. I liked it so much I bought another book by these women.

This really changed the way I parent. If you had sibling issues as a kid, this is a must read so you don't pass that on. Things changed with the way my kids interact as well. I highly recommend it.
