Review

“Parkin has a deft sense of the ways that video games appeal to and satiate the longings of the spirit...Death by Video Game offers an excellent sociocultural study of the 21st century’s quintessential art form.” —The Washington Post“For the past decade or so, Tom Bissell has been widely regarded as the best video game writer, and his essay collection Extra Lives the best book about video games. That was true until Simon Parkin’s Death by Video Game...Brainy enough to appeal to even the deepest gamer, and yet accessible enough for the reader who hasn’t picked up a controller in years.” —GQ“Parkin has...a literary eye for scenic and investigative detail...Demonstrate[s] the importance of thoughtful, serious criticism on gaming and play.”—New York Times Book Review “This country could use a reexamining of the underlying appeal of video games. Simon Parkin’s book does just that, exploring the different aspects (discovery, evil, competition) that come to captivate player-bases so strongly that individuals will neglect their health to the point of death.” —Flavorwire“Groundbreaking ... his reportage leads to brilliant, fresh insights ... Accomplishing that rare feat of teaching while entertaining, this work ignites a series of debates crucial to the future of video games.” —Library Journal, starred review“The finest book on video games yet. Simon Parkin thinks like a critic, conjures like a novelist, and writes like an artist at the height of his powers—which, in fact, he is.” —Tom Bissell, author of Extra Lives: Why Video Games Matter“Simon Parkin is gaming's Jon Ronson, and his book charts the extremes of the medium to try to answer the question why the hell do we all care about video games anyway?” —Kieron Gillen, writer of Iron Man,Uncanny X-Men, and The Wicked + The Divine “The best book about video games I've read since I wrote one.” —Steven Poole, author of Trigger Happy“Fascinating . . . Parkin takes seriously the notion that video games, or some aspects of them, might be bad for us. Yet he also takes video games seriously as a source of solace for a grieving parent or spouse, a safe form of indoor play for Iraqi children in Baghdad, and a helpful way, like any other form of fiction, for humanity to avoid staring too directly at our certain deaths.” —Chris SuellentropFrom the Hardcover edition.

As expected. No issues.

Delves into what is typically overlooked when it comes to gaming and the potential negative impact it has on those who become too obsessed. A great read for those who are into gaming.

I personally have been an off and on gamer since I was five-years-old. I am now thirty-two-years-old and I have seen and played them all. Sometimes in healthy moderation and sometimes I find myself trapped in “chronoslip,” as Parkin describes it – the loss of time as one battles good, evil, or another person from the other side of the globe. My history mainly revolves around gaming consoles - from the Atari to what I currently own, the Xbox One. And on the PC I spent an unknown and presumably unhealthy amount of time in Starcaft and World of Warcraft. When I inadvertently or purposely decide to submerge myself into video games Simon Parkin’s “Death By Video Game,” truly captured why I had binged for hours, days, and even months at a time - escapism. The idea of escapism bleeds throughout the book along with the good, bad, and ugly of video gaming. This is my first book I have read concerning the gaming culture, but more importantly its history and its merit to the developer and the gamer himself. The book focuses on an array of topics such as the massacre and bloodshed at Columbine and Sandy Hook as the murderers were gamers themselves. It explains why video games are a sort of different medium than television in correlation to freedom of speech. It becomes evident that video games may have limited freedom due to the fear of public backlash like a game where you assume the role of Lee Harvey Oswald and assassinate John F Kennedy again and again...What I really liked about “Death by Video Game,” is that I could relate to his subjects who just wanted to flee from their own lives. As a former World of Warcraft player, I literally could not stop playing until I had realized I was not doing anything worthwhile in my life but searching for loot, the most powerful gear, and the rarest items. And for what - bragging rights and an eerie sense of accomplishment. In the end, no one but other hardcore gamers can relate and that is why this is a must read. Video games have and can ruin relationships and for those who don’t really understand the enthusiast who spends his day in front of the screen should read this. But as Parkin explains there is a certain thrill to it, like teaming with 24 other players online to down the last boss in a raid and reap the digital rewards. It is an experience, and to me it became a lifestyle to do the grind of leveling up, acquiring gold, and fulfilling requirements to proceed to the end game until the next expansion was released. As an introduction Parkin goes to shed light on the deaths of Asian gamers who, well played in excess to their own demise. From there he shifts from political to the positive and negatives of gaming and its young history. It is a very satisfying read and for me, it led me to come to terms that gaming is essentially a killer of time. A genuine waste of time. But so is television and theater.

This is a fantastic insight into the mindsets of gamers and how video games have become such an important part of so many lives, mine included. If you're a gamer who wants to understand yourself better, then read this book. If you're not a gamer but know some who rather bamboozle you, read this book. :-)

A lot of it felt very forced. Certain chapters back up the premise but much of it felt like it was lightly shoehorned in to give it more pages. The theme of "video games let you be in control why other media is passive" is overused in every chapter and became fairly annoying rather than informative. Did not do a great job of exploring the premise of examining those who have actually died due to obsession with virtual worlds. Wouldn't recommend to fellow games industry folks.

This is a really, really good book. It is full of well-written and thoughtful ideas about video games in general and specific video games. There were many games mentioned in this book that I had never heard of, or that I never knew the background details about. I encourage any self-respecting video game player to read this book. Excellent, and I would love to read a sequel.

I love Lisa's work, if you haven't seen her Vblog on you tube, if you can't afford therapy, I highly recommend it! It has changed my life! It is still changing my life! Lisa has a very empathetic and personable way of communicating to her audience, but her greatest gift is showing you exactly how to overcome the obstacles of your programming. She not only explains to you how your mind works against you, but gives you tools that address all the symptoms of co-dependency. Best of all she has done her own recovery work. She knows what she is talking about, not as distant observer but as a survivor of her own childhood programming. She has given me a lot of hope in very dark times, and I can't wait to see how much more I will learn from her. It will take time and dedication to sit down and do some of the exercises she suggests. But they are well worth it, if you believe you are well worth it. It's all about getting to know yourself, coming to terms with your past and having a vision for your future. Thank you Lisa!

This book has honestly opened up a whole new world of understanding for me. In Codependent - Now What?... Lisa breaks down the pain and the issues in a way that that is emathetic and understandable. I was originally diagnosed clinically depressed and codependent more than 30 years ago. No counselor, medication, yogi or spiritual teacher has cut to the chase and opened my heart and mind the way Lisa and this book has. I highly recommend this practical guide. You will begin to see rapid healing in your life!

Lisa is a true master. This book is liberating, inspiring, and aspirational. If you are a codependent or wondering what it is, read this book. Prepare to undo the lies that you have taken for granted as truth. Lisa's writing ability and expertise have increased extraordinarily since her first book (I have read all of them), and it only further captivates the reader. Whether you are on her YouTube page, watching a live video, or reading a book, you sense a deep connection to her. And not only that, but Lisa doesn't fancy herself a "guru" - she exhibits truly humility that we are all equal and have equal ability to heal, connect, and share love and light with the world. Thank you, thank you, thank, you Lisa. My only hope is that her coaching sessions will be discounted for students.

This book is the equivalent of going into my head and unscrewing and taking all the things I have desperately tried to get my fiance (who comes from a relatively healthy family) to understand - and then putting them both on the table and saying how to get over them. Even the language I have used in trying to combat dysfunctional behavior is in this book - Like desperately wanting to be "seen." And not living in the present, because of this one. I have read a lot of books, I have gone to alot of, and have tried alot of therapist, by far this is one of best resources I have come across. The commandments are worth the price alone.

Looking forward to healing. I am 53 years old and only recently discovered that my abusive EX and mother are pathological narcissists. I am definitely a codependent as a result of life long narcissistic abuse and now it’s is time to embrace healing. In 2012 my only sibling and loving brother ended his life by suicide. I tried to make sense of his death and now believe my mother destroyed my brother’s life, self esteem and every loving relationship he ever had. I too have been that low but never again. The rest of my life will be the best of my life. I watch your YouTube videos and might try your August workshop. Thank you Lisa for helping me make sense of my confusing life. Knowledge is empowering.

I am currently in Lisa's 12 week program and this is an excellent work book to use with the course. Even if I weren't in the course, this book would be an excellent resource and life saver for anyone who is currently codependent. The tools and information are invaluable! One of my best purchases in my life.

This brilliant book is for anyone and everyone who has ever asked themselves why is my life not exactly how I imagined it even though I am a good person and hard worker. And for those who haven't asked that question, this book is the best in helping move away the cobwebs of the mind that prevent us from having true clarity and ownership of our true, authentic selves. Not whoooeeeooo spooky spiritual, Lisa A Romano has compiled 20 plus years of her own experience and has outlined a program that allows us to fearlessly face ourselves in order to become the best we can be. This book is for everyone. It's the best investment I've made in myself in a long, long time. I highly recommend this book.

I have read all of Lisa A Romano's books to date. I love her style of writing because it is as if she is talking directly to me as I read the words off the page. I highly recommend her work, her YouTube Channel is amazing! Her teachings are phenomenal and she has helped me to see that I too am more than enough! If you ever feel unseen, unheard, and dismissed in life than her work is for you!As children growing up in the 60s and 70s the motto was that children are to be seen and not heard and unfortunately many of us came from homes like that and we didn't receive the sincere validation that has human beings is so vitally important for our development as kids.Lisa walks you through her journey, through the muck and the mire and then she takes you on a journey of recovery. It is not an easy one but it is certainly a powerful one!Thank you, Lisa, for all that you do!In love and light!Kelly
