Review

A quietly powerful reflection on how food can bring families together, Mayada's book honors the everyday rhythms of the immigrant experience. Fatayer, mulukhiyah, tabbouleh―these recipes show why Syrian cuisine should have a place at everyone's table. (Marcus Samuelsson, co-owner of Red Rooster Harlem)Mayada Anjari's book is a beautiful testimony to the rich―and often overlooked―cultural contributions that displaced people bring to their country of adoption. More than just a collection of recipes, this book is a cultural artifact that celebrates the power of food to transcend the hardships of refugee life. (Pierre Thiam, chef and author of Senegal)This is a book to cook from and to learn from, a beautiful invitation to engage with Syrian home cooking. In warm and graceful writing, Jennifer Sit sets forth Mayada Anjari's very accessible recipes, cooking wisdom, and story of her family's journey from Syria to America. Bravo! (Naomi Duguid, author of Taste of Persia: A Cook’s Travels Through Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran, and Kurdistan)Mayada's story is one of an immigrant overcoming adversity through perseverance and her desire to build and connect with her community through her food. This is a cookbook that celebrates Syrian food and the kindness of the human heart. (Nik Sharma, founder of the blog A Brown Table and author of Season: Big Flavors, Beautiful Food)I always hoped to make it to Syria, to see Palmyra and the famous souk in Aleppo, and best of all, to taste the food. Thanks to Mayada, I get to cook the legendarily delicious food myself, right at home. This book holds a beautiful and evocative story, and by buying a copy you're supporting Mayada's family and an organization committed to helping many more. (Sara Jenkins, chef and owner of Nina June and Porsena)How exciting it is to step into Mayada's fragrant, enchanting kitchen in this special book, where we get an up-close and personal lesson in making her luscious Syrian recipes. Mayada is the kind of cook who inspires trust. She reflects the hospitable, generous soul of the Middle East, showing us that everything we make tastes better when shared with those we welcome to our tables. The inspiring journey of her family in this book is a story of strength, love, and hope―it is stirred beautifully into every recipe, and we are grateful for every taste. (Maureen Abood, blogger and author of Rose Water & Orange Blossoms: Fresh and Classic Recipes from My Lebanese Kitchen)This beautiful book testifies to the power of food to heal and connect. By cooking for others, Mayada keeps her family traditions intact; by sharing her recipes and stories, she communicates the centrality of food in Syrian culture. The Bread and Salt Between Us is both a delicious introduction to Syrian food and a moving portrait of resilience. It belongs in every library and kitchen. (Darra Goldstein, founding editor of Gastronomica)As a wife, mother, and chef, I connected deeply to this beautiful book and the stories and recipes that came from a place of struggle and love. The Bread and Salt Between Us does a wonderful job paying tribute to Mayada's heritage with recipes that we all want to eat! Mayada's food is the kind that brings people together and has the power to heal. (Einat Admony, chef and owner of Balaboosta, taïm, Bar Bolonat, and Kish-Kash)The Bread and Salt Between Us is a powerful story of survival and reincarnation. Most importantly, the collective stories bind us all together through food and memories. (Vikas Khanna, chef, restaurateur, and cookbook author)In our current political and cultural climate, it's commendable to see someone using her passion for food to step beyond boundaries. Food has always been a conduit for a deeper understanding of other cultures, and Mayada shows a picture of love and warmth through her delicious recipes. (Jose Garces, chef and author of The Latin Road Home)

In 2017 I became involved in the local Syrian refugee community in my town. I have heard devastating stories and those of hope. I have laughed, I have cried, I have danced, I have sat in stunned silence, all while visiting the homes of my Syrian friends. In every Syrian home I have had the honor of visiting has been marked by delicious food that is lovingly prepared. Just this morning a Syrian friend insisted on making my daughter a traditional Syrian cake for her birthday. Thanks to my friends sharing their food and their kitchens with me I have become a regular at the local Arabic market and have learned to make a few Syrian dishes myself. This book is filled with recipes I have eaten in the homes of my friends and others I can't wait to discover. The beauty of the Syrian people, and their heart for loving & gracious hospitality, is revealed in this book. I HIGHLY recommend this to everyone, whether a cook or just someone who enjoys learning about other cultures.

I just finished making this wonderful Chicken and potatoes recipe for a group of friends. Everyone thought it was delicious and the instructions were clear and easy to follow. I'm giving this cookbook to all my friends for Christmas! I can't think of a better way to welcome the Anjari family into our country than by eating this Syrian food and reading about the Syrian culture and family life.

I have enjoyed this cookbook and will use the recipes frequently. It is well written and the pictures are both helpful and inspiring. I enjoy trying foods from cultures different from my own and this cookbook delivers. The stories included regarding the cook author's refugee family were interesting and heartwarming. That said, what did disappoint me greatly was the Acknowledgements section where one of the co-writers took it upon herself to disparage the President and make what was a wonderful cookbook a personal political statement. What a shame. I will note, the cook author's family came here legally and went immediately to work building their new life here. Wonderful. I'll probably just cut out the page from the co-author.

I bought this book after reading about the author and other refugee stories about their first Thanksgivings here in the US, I wanted a way to support their efforts so when I saw the link for the cookbook I ordered it. It’s mostly recipes of everyday fare for everyday meals. Other than the pomegranate molasses I have pretty much everything already in my spice rack. I tired the coriander chicken and it was very tasty, next time I will cook it on the grill outside.( it’s real winter here in Michigan) Of course there are little stories about the recipes and family which is part of what this book is about. Another part of what is important is the refuge story, about cooking food in a strange country, that will taste like “ home”.

Love this Syrian home cooking cookbook. Mayada's dishes are simple and delicious and she uses those wonderful middle eastern spices like cardamom, cumin, tahini, etc. She has vegetarian recipes as well as those that use chicken, beef or lamb. Beautifully photographed and included are her personal stories as a refugee who had endured many hardships with her family.

This cookbook of Syrian recipes is as much about a story of a family caught in one of the tragedies of our time, the beauty of human connections (across cultures, religions, languages, lands) as is about the joy of preparing delicious food for family and friends. As a vegetarian I was able to find recipes that are easy to make for a well balanced meal. The cabbage salad with pomegranate molasses was as delicious as it was colorful. The lentil soup was easy to make and flavorful and took less than 30 minutes with the help of the Cook Zen (a microwave pot introduced by the same publisher) to boil the lentil in no time.

Recipes from a refugee. Stories in the book are interesting and tells how one family escaped the the US. Recipes are simple and traditional. I've made a few and they are quite good. I believe the family came from Syria originally.

I am a collector of cookbooks. I have some Syrian ones but this one has a special story of generosity and friendship. It is touching.
