Review

“Coming from a world-renowned expert in the literary forms of the Bible and drawing on the expertise that can come only from a lifetime of college teaching, this marvelous new book will take its place as an essential reference work that should be in the library of everyone who seeks to study or teach the Bible in greater depth. Highly recommended.”―Wayne Grudem, Distinguished Research Professor of Theology and Biblical Studies, Phoenix Seminary“Here is a book, indeed, to keep at hand: it will hold a permanent place by my Bible. Leland Ryken illustrates the interrelationship between meaning and form in a manner that is erudite, accessible, and illuminating. Learning about literary forms in the Bible deepens our understanding and appreciation of Scripture, and glorifies our God as Author of all.”―Carolyn Weber, Faculty Member, Brescia University College, Western University, London, Ontario; author, Surprised by Oxford and Holy Is the Day“This extremely useful book will be warmly welcomed by teachers, not only within churches, but also in college and university settings. A highly practical vade mecum for any serious reader of the Bible, for students of the Bible in its literary dimension it will become practically indispensable. Leland Ryken has made yet another superb contribution to our textual resources for biblical learning.”―David Lyle Jeffrey, Distinguished Professor of Literature and the Humanities, Baylor University“Here is a reader-friendly handbook that will significantly enhance one’s understanding of the Bible. What a wonderful tool for pastors, laypeople, and students alike, who will now be able to benefit from Leland Ryken’s wise insights and marvelous literary skills. I heartily recommend this volume.”―David S. Dockery, President, Trinity International University / Trinity Evangelical Divinity School“A ready reference for scholars and general readers who wish to understand the Bible better and in its own terms, Ryken’s handbook needs to be on every serious Bible reader’s shelf and used often. A profoundly helpful resource.”―Michael Travers, Associate Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Oklahoma Baptist University“In this essential handbook, Ryken guides us to a proper understanding of the many literary forms of Scripture. Pastors and all readers of the Bible will deepen their understanding of God’s Word if they read this book cover to cover and keep it nearby for future reference.”―Tremper Longman III, Distinguished Scholar of Biblical Studies, Westmont College“Our kind Father has gone to great lengths to speak to us, yet sometimes our finite minds struggle to comprehend the complexities of his Word. This book will greatly enhance your ability to understand confusing passages, as well as see deeper richness in the old, familiar stories. Ryken helps you become more skillful at interpreting the Bible and knowing how to apply it accurately. The result will be a great increase in your love and admiration for our heavenly Father, who shares his heart with us in profound poetry, striking stories, colorful dialogue, and vivid imagery. Those who love Scripture, or want to love Scripture more, should read this book!”―Barbara Duguid, author, Extravagant Grace“This is a genuinely helpful resource for all readers of the Bible, but it is an especially excellent reference for teachers and students of the Bible as literature. Ryken’s volume will help readers experience, enjoy, and understand the Bible in new ways. The breadth of entries is thorough and truly impressive. Individual entries are concise but include enough explanation and examples to successfully illustrate each literary form discussed. This book is written by an expert in literature and the Bible, and it shows.”―David V. Urban, Associate Professor of English, Calvin College“This uniquely useful and accessible handbook will be a favorite among the tools used by serious students of the Bible. In recent decades, attention to the literary structures of the Bible’s various genres has become prominent. With all of the distractions of the modern world, study tools like this will help Christians to be imbued with the mind of Christ through his Word. I highly recommend this superb contribution to biblical studies.”―Gregory Reynolds, Pastor, Amoskeag Presbyterian Church, Manchester, New Hampshire; author, The Word Is Worth a Thousand Pictures: Preaching in the Electronic Age; editor, Ordained Servant: A Journal for Church Officers“Leland Ryken’s handbook is a well-conceived, concisely written, hugely helpful resource for students and teachers alike. Far from turning the Bible into ‘mere’ literature, Ryken draws us deeper into the authoritative and inerrant truths of the Scriptures. Just as we cannot know Christ apart from his incarnation as Jesus of Nazareth, so we cannot fully know the Bible until we understand the literary forms in which it was written.”―Louis Markos, Professor of English and Scholar in Residence, Houston Baptist University; author, From Achilles to Christ and Literature: A Student’s Guide

Excellent resource and also a helpful/insightful way to think about familiar storylines in the bible as they relate to classic storylines.

Extremely complete listing and explanation of biblical literary forms.

Great book! Quite necessary for scholarly investigation.

As a young missionary and student of the Bible, I once received counsel to check out certain commentaries written by scholars who didn't believe the Bible to be true. This counselor wasn't trying to lead me away from the true faith but toward it, because he suggested, "Many liberal scholars are more willing than conservatives to take the Bible at face value. Since they don't care what the Bible says, they have nothing to lose by being honest about its message." Having grown tired of endless word studies and thin defenses of dogmatic opinions on every page of some conservative commentaries, I gave it a try.And I began learning to read the Bible as a work of literature.(Please note: Not all commenters are created equal. Some unbelieving scholars take offense at the Bible's message and seek to undermine it at every turn. I'm not writing about them, but about their colleagues who approach the Bible with more indifference than aggression.)This approach helped me for a time, leading me to learn from brilliant (though spiritually foolish) writers how beautiful and well-written the Scriptures are. I learned how important structure was to ancient authors. I gained a keener eye for devices like characterization, comparison and contrast, inclusio (bookends), and repetition. I realized how important the original audience is to our interpretation. I learned to set aside my preconceptions, since I often had to suspend my disgust for the commentator's assumptions in order to sharpen my ability to observe the text and delight in the ancient artistry.Enter Leland Ryken.Dr. Ryken showed me that I didn't have to simmer in unbelieving scholarship in order to read the Bible for what it is: literature. One of my earliest "wow" experiences was being required to read selections from Ryken's Words of Delight: A Literary Introduction to the Bible for a seminary course. The book was so good, I finished it on my own as soon as the course ended. And I've returned to it regularly ever since.Ryken teaches college-level English and trusts God's word. I praise God for his service to the kingdom of God in our generation, through his teaching career and long list of published works. And I was delighted when this man I deeply respect was willing to endorse my book Knowable Word.Crossway caught my eye when they offered me a copy of Ryken's recent work, A Complete Handbook of Literary Forms in the Bible, in exchange for an honest review. This handbook appeared to be a useful tool for any student's library. And Ryken's Handbook delivers on a grand scale. Ryken gets literature, and he gets the Bible. The Handbook lists about 270 different forms Bible passages follow and gives definitions, explanations, and examples for each form. The handbook's introduction explains why literary form matters: Writers communicate meaning through form. If we ignore form, we often miss the meaning. There is no content in the Bible communicated without a form. And a biblical understanding of inspiration requires us to recognize the inspiration of not only words and content but also the shape those words take.Ryken explains:"The most obvious lesson that this handbook reveals is that the Bible is much more infused with literary forms and techniques than we realize. In fact, I predict that anyone who browses in this book for ten minutes will be shocked by the extent to which literary forms and techniques are present in the Bible." (Kindle loc. 381)Dr. Ryken is a prophet indeed. The Handbook will help you understand forms like soliloquy, three-plus-one motifs, parody, insult, irony, hero stories, fantasy, foreshadowing, envelope structure, apostrophe, coming-of-age stories, stories of villainy, and lament psalms, to name but a small percentage of forms.I would imagine using this reference often, except for one significant flaw that undermines its usefulness to average Bible readers like me. It has no Scripture index. This handbook is useful only to those already familiar with the extensive literary terms. If I'm reading Job 3, and I want to learn more about how soliloquies work, this handbook offers a marvelous explanation. But if I've never heard the term soliloquy, the handbook will be of no use to me.I would give this book 5 stars if it had a Scripture index tying Bible references to the names of literary forms found in them. Without such an index, unfortunately, I can't see most readers benefitting from this handbook—unless they're either steeped in the terminology of literature or reading other reference works making use of that terminology.

In the introduction to this marvelous little book, Leland Ryken makes a distinction that helps explain why his book is necessary. Some people, he notes, argue that "the literary forms of the Bible are only the forms in which the content comes to us." By contrast, he argues that the Bible's literary forms are "the only form in which the content is expressed." He concludes: "Without form, no content exists. Form is meaning. Meaning is embodied in form."If Ryken is correct--and I think he is--then we must pay attention to genres, literary techniques, motifs, archetypes and type scenes, figures of speech, rhetorical devices, stylistic traits, and formulas, for these literary forms are the vehicles by means of which biblical authors, inspired by God, expressed theological, historical, and moral content. Failure to understand the literary form correctly may result in a failure to understand the Bible correctly. We should not interpret a parable as a historical narrative, to cite an obvious example. If we do, we misunderstand both. The handbook presents literary forms in alphabetical order, beginning with "ABUNDANCE, STORY OF" and ending with "WORSHIP PSALM." For each form, Ryken provides both definition and example. Most of his entries are noncontroversial, though I think "PARABLE" might ruffle a few pastoral feathers, since it argues that parables are "usually allegorical," in the sense that "numerous details in most of [Jesus'] parables stand for something else." My guess is that readers will agree the substance of Ryken's remarks, even if they chafe at his use of the words allegory and allegorical.Ryken's entries, "COMEDY" and "TRAGEDY," point to architectonic truths about the literary form of the Bible considered as a whole. "It is a commonplace of literary criticism," Ryken writes in the former entry, "that comedy rather than tragedy is the dominant form of the Bible and the Christian gospel." Why? "The story begins with the creation of a perfect world. It descends into the tragedy of fallen human history. It ends with a new world of total happiness and victory over evil." By contrast, as Ryken writes in the latter entry, "The materials for tragedy are everywhere present in the Bible, but the Bible is largely a collection of averted tragedies--potential tragedies that are avoided through human repentance and divine forgiveness." The biblical metanarrative of creation, fall, and redemption encodes a comic worldview, a hopeful story with a happy ending. No wonder joy is the predominant response to the gospel whenever it is preached! Those wishing to study the literary forms of the Bible in greater depth can turn to several other works by the same author, including: How to Read the Bible as Literature,Words of Delight: A Literary Introduction to the Bible,Ryken's Bible Handbook, and Dictionary of Biblical Imagery, which he co-edited with James C. Wilhoit and Tremper Longman III.Finally, on a personal note, I was a student of Ryken's in his classes on British Literature and Milton at Wheaton College (Class of '91). I enjoyed those classes thoroughly, despite the bullwhip. (Don't ask!) And I continue to profit from his many writings on the literary qualities of the Bible.

Let's Meet a Teacher (Cloverleaf Books - Community Helpers), by Bridget Heos

Review

"Told from the perspective of students on a class field trip, the books introduce community helpers and explain what they do. In Firefighter, readers learn about the tools and equipment needed in the work. Fire safety is discussed both on the job and in the home. In Librarian, children are introduced to 'information experts, storytellers, and technology wizards.' Readers learn that librarians teach about ebooks and technology and encourage questions to 'pump up your brainpower.' The book does not mention the necessary training and education a librarian must pursue in order to work in a library. In Police Officer, Officer Gabby visits the classroom and explains the different types of work police can perform throughout their day. Construction Worker discusses the various skills needed for this type of work. The class visits the site of a future school and learns about the types of machines used. In Teacher, the students visit a fourth-grade classroom. The captions discuss the types of equipment used in the classroom, such as computers and whiteboards, and about following rules. Cartoon-style animated drawings in bright colors introduce diverse characters who will capture children's interest. Chapters are divided into three parts, captions provide additional information, and there is ample spacing between sentences. Additional titles where more books on community helpers are needed." --School Library Journal--Journal

Krakow is Poland's former capital and in this lively book, the author takes you on a trip through its history, geography and present day living, as experienced by a local. One of the most beautiful cities in Eastern Europe with awesome countryside landscapes and a medieval town square, there are many things to do during the day and night. The author has provided 55 secrets which you can explore with the locations provided on a map. Towards the end of the book, you will find the location and description of the top or popular places that is worth to check them out. This guide contains a lot of useful and awesome activities to do during your visit to Krakow. Its good and refreshing to see a list filled with actities besides the well known touristic spots and see that there's way more to do in this amazing Polish city.Obviously they didn't forget to include the best clubs , bars and even the best traditional places for some good polish foodA must have when visiting Krakow!

Not many photos, or maps showing locations. Everything regarding these items is hyperlinked based. Good basic guide.

My busy schedule doesn't allow me to travel as much. This book is a quick read. It's short, sweet and very engrossing. It seems that I would now seriously need to take out some time from my busy schedule and make this trip to KRAKOW!! Recommended to everyone who think globally and yet act local.

Excellent guide, you won't miss anything with this guide!

Not sure what I was expecting but this is largely several pages of lists, many of which have no additional information or images. At this point I do not know how good the recommendations are but will see when I go to Krakow. So far, I am not impressed.

This book should be a basic Guidebook for every traveler. Surely the author spent many hours in the edition of this practical and interesting book on the ancient city of Krakow, Poland's former royal capital. An experienced traveler will find cultural information about the Jews, the Schindler factory (remember the Spielberg's movie?), historic buildings, museums of all kinds (the author offers a list of museums and day of the week you can visit them free of charge), excursions around the city, like water park, Auschwitz, mountains, etc.In addition to offering the guide of the most important tourist sites, the author also offers top lists of the best restaurants (including vegetarian), bars, markets, gay spots, festivals, coffee shops, nightclubs, hostels, etc. He includes links to the websites where you can get more information. Also, the author includes links to maps, so the traveler can locate the sites very easy.I highly recommend this book because the author knows the city very well and gives good advice, so you can feel like a native of Krakow during your visit.

Thank you for this book! Fun to read and exactly what I look for in a guide book.Definitely a required read for a trip to Krakow or anyone curious about what is going on in Krakow that is new and exciting.

I guess i did the reverse of "Burying the lead" there. ("Leading the bury?") This play is a piece of peerless brilliance. I'm buying it today, to read and memorise.I saw it twice (in the same, final day) at Stage West, in Fort Worth, Texas. I can tell that the brilliance of the play is more than the greatness of the cast/crew/director - and that is higher praise than i can generally allow myself to give.Emotional, hysterical, terrifying - to list the adjectives would break the spine of a dozen thesauri - and do no good whatsoever.Read it, or better yet - go see it, if possible. The change it made in me was a profound improvement.(Sorry if i lay the praise on thick, it is well earned.)I thank Mr. McDonagh, and the brilliant ensemble [ stagewest . org ] for the best day i've had in years.-Keith Hale-

This is one of the best plays I have ever read. Make sure to have time to read this all in one sitting, because you will not be able to put it down! Martin McDonagh is a genius, and I also recommend his other plays and films.

An incredible play. Moving, and amazingly well written.

Great reading. If you like McDonagh's other writings, such as In Bruge, Seven Psychopaths, and Three Billboards, you probably will like this.

Weird but interesting. A fresh read that makes you more than a little creeped out.

Had to read it for World Lit. Usually I hate reading classes but I *loved* this play. It's an easy read. Highly recommend it.

Great, brilliant play.

This is the most incredible thing I've ever read. Once you finish it, I can guarantee you won't forget it. An amazing tale about art and its role.

I am giving it three stars because I really think the author writes a solid piece. I like the plot and the character’s super abilities are intriguing. However, I had some issues with the heroin (main character) herself. Sloan (the heroin) had a boyfriend in high school who cheated on her with this girl Shannon. Sloan spread a rumor about Shannon having a disease. (The mature response is to hold the douche bag responsible the girl is irrelevant at that point)So fast forward:Ten some years later. Sloan is still talking a load of bs about Shannon. Phycology 101 : This screams insecurity on the Sloan’s part. It’s not a good look to put down other women. As a matter of fact, I had more respect for Shannon for not saying anything back. Ten years has gone by. Something is not right if you can’t move on.But that’s not it. Sloan (main character) likes Shannon’s boyfriend Nate. But this Warren shows up and she is head over heels for him. instead Sloan tosses Nate aside while constantly berating him about dating Shannon. But then good ol Nate takes care of Sloan (because Warren her boyfriend asked him too) because she was seriously ill. Nate slept next to her while she was ill. (it wasn’t like he was naked in bed with her or pawing at her while she lay ill) But somehow Sloan thought it would be a great idea to tell Warren Nate slept in her bed. I get the whole have two guys fight over a woman thing can be exciting. But when the woman orchestrates the fight, to get two men jealous, then how do I the reader believe the love is even real? It was forced. The heroine is controlling the outcome. There are ways to have two guys fight over a woman without the woman orchestrating the fight. I just found it hard to be on the heroines side because she played a lot of games.

The premise of this book sounded amazing and I was eager to dive in. It started off good but about a quarter of the way through I started to severely dislike two of the MC's - Nathan and Sloan.First, I'm going to say that I knew this was going to be a love triangle going in...and that was ok. What I didn't know was that Nathan was already in a relationship when he met Sloan. I absolutely hate cheating and when Nathan made no qualms about hiding the fact that he was in a relationship (6 months) I figured "ok, so he'll take the protector and defender stance which fits because he is a cop..." Well, thats not exactly what happened. He started omitting things like where he was and who he was with almost immediately. He then started ditching his girlfriend for Sloan. All of this didn't sit right with me. Finally when we meet his girlfriend we find out that she is Sloan's high school nemesis. I think the author tried to use this to get us to feel that Sloan was getting some type of revenge considering Stephanie stole Sloan's boyfriend in high school - side note is that these characters are in their late 20's and they were teens when the boyfriend stealing happened -- additional side note, it takes two to cheat...kids do stupid stuff when at that age and holding onto a grudge for 10 years is extremely childish. I should also note that Stephanie treated Sloan fine upon their re-meeting. She didn't belittle her or talk down to her. She treated her the way an adult would, HOWEVER, Sloan and her best friend repeatedly made fun of Stephanie and made sure to rub it in her face when Nathan and Sloan were spending time together. Furthermore, Nathan didn't do anything to defend or stand up for Stephanie..he just let this happen. Ultimately all this did was leave a bad taste in my mouth for Nathan and Sloan and I felt horrible for Stephanie. As for Sloan's character in the beginning I found her likable. She was sarcastic and witty and came off as a strong character. But due to what I mentioned above by 1/2 the way through the book I found her extremely unlikable and shallow. Her witty comments and dirt slinging became insufferable and totally ruined her character. As if all of that is not enough when Warren entered the picture (2/3rd way through the book) she felt an immediate attraction to him BUT continued to string Nathan along. Yes, I know they were all working together on the case but her and Nathan kissed, kept it a secret, and continued to "be close".For Warren...he was an ok character. Considering how late he entered the story it was hard to get a feel on him except to know that him and Sloan are alike but are opposites. They have a crazy spark between them and suffer horrible migraines when they separate. I found him to be a bit of a push over though consider he knows that Nathan wants Sloan and doesn't really appear to worried about it - yes, they exchange words and threats but ultimately he just lets it go.I hate not completing a series so I went ahead and downloaded the sample of the second book "The Siren" but only made it to the middle of the first chapter. At that point Warren had moved into Sloan's house (uprooted his life to do so I remind you...), they were having smex BUT Sloan was still talking about the fact that Nathan took a bullet for her and that means he must love her - honey, he's a cop...he did it protecting you - and how she just didn't know what to do with that. Dear God...I wanted to strangle the woman and I realized that I really loathed her. What was even worse was that Nathan was still hanging around every day and was STILL with his girlfriend. Nathan had told Sloan that he wanted her BUT was still with Stephanie! I know some people have stated the liked the characters but seriously...how is this guy or Sloan likable? While there is no physical cheating Nathan is emotionally cheating on his girlfriend continually. Sloan knows this helps perpetuate it and ultimately she is cheating on Warren - I consider it cheating because Sloan and Warren are having smex regularly and talk about how they can't be without each other (Hell...she considered moving to another state with him!!). They even refer to each other as bf/gf...THEY ARE IN A RELATIONSHIP!!Last but not least...I know I'm in the minority and I'm not bashing anyone for liking the characters. For me, it just didn't work. Overall the story had great promise but I don't think I could really get into it due to my distaste of Nathan and Sloan. Writing was ok but nothing fancy or enthralling. It was really only the premise that had me interested.

This was amazing!I haven't laughed in such a long time in a murder mystery with a love triangle. Usually those things are beyond intense, and one love interest with bodies falling like flies is enough on a girl, but Sloan's got two and ten.The writing was great with Sloan's POV and her angst about people finding out what she can do felt so realistic, especially with the responses she got. That's why I loved it even more when she handled it like a boss, and took it with a grace that had nothing on her gift of... er, collecting? It's so important for me to get into a book, and I fell right through, reading til my eyelids gave out and finishing up as soon as I woke up. It was that good. The murder mystery was interesting with all the different characters coming and going, but I loved the connection between Sloan and Warren. So much going on with that; I love how smoothly it was delivered. Not once was I nervous about their relationship, and I definitely didn't have any bad feelings when she was with Nathan. If you can create a (and I use this word lightly) multiple relationship among two guys and still make it all work harmoniously and stuff, you are a writing deity. On top of the murder and sexy men, I also enjoyed seeing Sloan's struggles with wanting a normal life she worked hard for and doing what was right. At times I got annoyed (just once, I swear) but her best friend, Adrienne, was right there to clear it all up for her (Bless you, Adrienne). The characters were all adorable with enough presence to move the story along and bring the story itself out of the love-triangle situation and back into the case. Nathan and Warren were so genuine that I honestly had a hard time choosing one in the beginning. This story is filled with so many awesome things, a mystery with a creepy set of guys to point fingers at, a party-hardy best friend, hot guys who mean well, love, and the type of fear that one's brain can only attempt to put a face to if it means sleeping a little better at night... or not.A seriously definite recommend. You'll be missing out on thrills and laughs.
