Dear Amazon-- the editorial review you supplied here about the author is totally erroneous and laughable!! Please correct it. This book is NOT authored by John Muir the nature-writer and conservationist, born 1838 and who died in 1914, BEFORE the volkswagen was even invented. This book is by John Muir (b1918– d1977) who was a structural engineer who worked for National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), who "dropped out," 1960s-style, to become a writer and long-haired car mechanic with a garage in Taos, New Mexico, and who specialized in maintenance and repair of Volkswagens. OMG!! This is exactly the sort of thing that makes the World Wide Web so damn dangerous Amazon. Fix it please!Peter Aschwanden's art work is awesome. It reminds me of R. Crumb. The detail is amazing. The book itself is a master-piece of entertainment and a great combination of art and technology. Reading it front to back will give the novice a good understanding of what makes the wheels go round and round. You might want to have a Haynes manual handy too, but you can't go wrong with Muir/Tosh Gregg for taking your bug apart and putting it back together again. It's just damn fun!

Still the BEST!I read this book for the first time when I was in college -- in the early 80's. That reading was for my 71 Karmann-Ghia. The second time, was while I was on an airplane in 2009 as I flew to pick-up my Porsche Speedster replica. Over twenty years later and everything flowed back into my brain about the elegance of the flat-four engine. And just like in the 80s, the dog-eared copy of the latest printing of this book sits on a shelf in my garage, next to the Speedster -- the pages of the chapter titled "Tune-up" dirty with used Castrol from my hands. Thirty years later, and life repeats itself, and that is a beautiful thing.

I had owned this book before, but gave it to the person who bought my old bus. A friend who is somewhat mechanically inclined but not familiar with air cooled VW's recently bought an old bug, so I got this copy for him. If you are looking for a Haynes, Chilton, or Motor manual, this isn't it. It is more of a novel, possibly a diary about (as the title indicates) keeping VW alive. It can be an entertaining read if you like dry humor, and it doesn't hurt if you can laugh when your projects occasionally dismantle themselves for unknown reasons. I will say it contains a ton of very useful information, some of which you may not find in any other VW manual, but you have to read it closely to glean it. Buy a used copy to save yourself the grease stains you will get on a new one, and save a buck or two. Personally, I believe it is a must read for the first time air-cooled VW owner.

I got this book when I was 14 for my 1974 VW Beetle. This book taught me how engines work, how to diagnose vehicles, and prepared me for becoming my own mechanic. Unlike other manuals when you need an image for the work you are doing you will find a hand-drawn version showing you exactly what to look for (check out the Distributor page for an example). We don't have the bug, but I got this for my partner and his first car. Though it's a newer VW, it'll still teach him to work on it because the principals are the same.

If you have an aircooled beetle, ghia, bus etc. this is THE Book for you. Illustrations are great, instructions are idiot proof (which is sayin something). If you aren't mechanically inclined but are willing to learn to work on cars like an aircooled VW you need to read this book like a novel. The guidance is great, tools and techniques used are generally excellent.

I bought an original copy of this great VW manual back in the 1960's but I can't really say I noticed any updates worth mentioning in the new copy.That being said, it's a must for any new or old VW owner. The illustrations alone are worth the price!!

I am not mechanically inclined, but I love my VW. This book has helped me keep my beloved Super Beetle on the road. Thorough (enough), yet easy-to-read, this is an accessible guide to VW maintenance. It will walk you step-by-step through most of what you need to keep yours running. Written with wit and humor, it is also a very enjoyable read.You may need some other manuals for more in-depth coverage of some topics, but this book is an excellent starting point.

If you own an air cooled VW, this is a must-have! The book is humorous, insightful and extremely educational. My VW mechanic, who has been fixing VWs for over 50 years, recommended this and loaned me his copy. I had to buy it, it was so good! It is the most comprehensive guide for classic VWs and is simple to read and understand for even the most novice mechanic. It demystifies the process and gives you confidence to maintain and repair your VW Bug/Bus/Ghia/Fastback/Squareback/Notchback/etc.

I just got my pre-ordered copy today and I'm about halfway through it. It's hard to put down. Every page brings more enlightenment about the complex life of one of the Greatest Musician/Poet of our times. Gordon Lightfoot has touched millions with his music and his heart felt lyrics all over the world. This book tells Gord's entire story thus far and takes us way back to his childhood. There are rare photos included to showcase Lightfoot in various stages of his life and musical career. I am thus far very impressed with this book and the writing. It sheds light on Gordon Lightfoot's songs and the inspiration for them. It breathes a new and real perspective on the man's life and the sort of person he was and is. If you love the timeless music of Gordon Lightfoot and have found yourself connecting with his lyrics and music then don't hesitate to buy this. And if Gordon Lightfoot happens to read this review....Gordon, I thank God for you and your music and I wish you all the best.

Mr. Jennings provided an informative and intriguing picture of music great Gordon Lightfoot. The book, while written with admiration for its subject, is more than simple hero worship. It is a book about Lightfoot the icon, but also about Lightfoot the man, and as a human, he had faults that Jennings chronicles, too. Readers should enjoy the journey from Lightfoot 's early years and influences to the 21st Century, with Gordon still writing , performing, and being one who influences new musicians. There are brief explanations of sources for some of the songs, and enjoyable tales of the Canadian troubadour 's friendships with Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, his various bandmates, and many others. While the book might slow down just a bit toward the end, it is a very worthwhile read that will send you off to listen to those Lightfoot tunes you have in your collection.

Reading this new biography of my musical hero was like taking a wild ride in a time machine. Nicholas Jennings meticulously chronicled Lightfoot all the way to the winter side of life. The chapters flow easily. Sensational tales are told with great care, but the biographer focuses on the songs. Even for this five-decade fan, there were many surprises.Jennings painted a vivid portrait of the prolific lyricist and composer, skilled musician, tireless performer, loving father, loyal friend, rugged outdoorsman, committed conservationist, and astute publisher. I was most impressed, as I was at Lightfoot’s concerts, with the tenure of his gifted band mates.What I may remember most is the echo of Gordon’s mother, Jessie, teaching him that we should not waste our God-given talents. I am glad that she got to see her son on stage with Bing Crosby and so sorry that Gordon missed his chance to meet Elvis. I will be forever grateful for the good fortune of having met Lightfoot himself on his most recent tour. Dreams come true.

I grew up liking the music of Gordon Lightfoot and have seen him in concert twice: in about 1975 at the Hollywood Bowl and in Memphis TN in the mid 90s. At the Hollywood Bowl in the 70s he lectured us to not clap along with the song he was about to play. reading the review later of the previous night, he had stopped singing and lectured the crowd. Needless to say, in the 90s he was more than interested in us clapping along.This book describes his character well, his shyness, his alcoholism, his relationship with his kids, etc. If there is one weakness in this book the coverage of Kathy Smith is limited. a great affair but he seems to say it was broken off completely when she was involved in the death of John Belushi. I get this is a Lightfoot autobiography. But she was a big part of her life and then was involved in an infamous event which identifies Gordon most of the time.The strength of the book is complete, detailed history of his albums. Overall, there is plenty to learn and plenty to like. If you have an interest in Lightfoot music, buy it. If only a passive interest, it may not be of interest.

Excellent book about one of my favorite singers. I discovered Gordon Lightfoot in the early 70's and have been a "Lighthead" ever since (although I never knew that term of endearment until I read the book). The one thing that I was disappointed with is the fact that many of my favorite songs hardly got a mention (and one of them was described as a "clinker"), but I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion. Have most of his albums and haven't had a turntable for years so I had to get most of Lightfoot's music on CD. Thank you Nicholas Jennings!

Great Book. I have loved his music for years, have a large collection and saw him in concert about 1990. I liked that in many cases he mentions what lead him to write many of his songs. I noticed that he did not like the song "Rainbow Trout", It is one of my favorites. I like the way he uses novel combinations of lyrics and music (can't think of the correct word). This is a must read for any fan of his music.

Very well written! I enjoyed reading about the history of folk music and how Gordon was influenced by so many. Of course he also had a profound influence on so many artists and fans! I also liked reading the background on many of my favorite songs. It inspired me to go out a buy some of Lightfoot's more recent albums.

The title of my review is what Dana would say at the end of her YouTube videos to me and countless others who were a victim of narcissistic abuse. Over two years ago I really thought I was going crazy as I couldn't make sense of what happened to what I thought was a very happy marriage to a man who constantly told me how much he loved me and I was his best friend. How I was his "soulmate, love of his life, woman of his dreams and the perfect woman for him." I heard all of the above throughout our 20+ years together. But after I caught him out on a date with a just days divorced former ho-worker. And which he told dozens of lies in order to see her; my world got flipped upside down. And then daily it got worse until my whole life exploded in just one day. I could go on and on, but I didn't know what happened to me. I couldn't make sense of him and our entire relationship. Thousands of happy memories no longer mattered to him and I got thrown away like garbage overnight. I have never known such great despair, heartbreak and feeling like my entire life was broken into a million pieces. I didn't know what I did to deserve to be treated so horribly, cold and cruelly. I had never felt like this my entire life and for at least a year my brain felt like scrambled eggs and it hurt but in a way that I can't even describe.Going to a counselor and a psychiatrist (the drug doctor) only helped up until a point. Both of them said, "He sounds like a narcissist.", but they were not able to connect the dots that I was emotionally and psychologically abused. I knew what I went through for over 20 years wasn't normal and the end of our marriage wasn't normal. I kept researching, reading and finally I found Dana Morningstars "Thrive After Abuse" videos. Things started clicking and making sense and every video she told me I was "not crazy." I'm guessing that anyone who was in a relationship like this has "felt crazy" or wondered "Am I going crazy?" It's the scariest thing in the world. And sadly, how he was acting and me connecting the dots to years of gaslighting, projection and years of lying and "other women"; I started to react to the abuse. I pretty much did everything you are not supposed to do, but........there was no guidance from professionals as they didn't know what I was going through.Thank God for Dana and her videos. She and other professionals helped me get to where I am today. I still have a long way to go, but I read her book and it's excellent. It is organized so well and it's written for: (1). People who think they might be in a abusive relationship. (2). People just getting out of an abusive relationship. (3). Professionals and people that want to help and support the victim. The book is packed with information, defining so many terms and giving real life examples for each term. And the nice part is that you don't have to read the whole book if you are already familiar with a lot of the terms. The Table of Contents will easily guide you to look up any subject matter or word definition. The end of the book has strategies to help you heal and gain control of your life again; this is my main focus now. I can easily see myself going back to this book for many years to come to look up information.I can easily see this book being used by professionals to help their patients. Dana's voice comes across as a loving sister or best friend and this same tone is apparent in her writing style. As the title suggests -- start here. Yes, this book is a great starting point for anyone looking to heal from narcissistic abuse or really any other problematic relationship.

Excellent book!! Not only does Dana Morningstar give you a thorough explanation of the definitions of Gaslghting, Flying Monkeys, etc. She also offers an in depth understanding of what it is like to be on a Narcissistic relationship. This is the best book I have read on this subject so far. She has offered me such a thorough understanding of what I went through, but a way to start to piece me lief back together. It was like reading my life in black and white. Scary!! I can't thank her enough for the work she does to help those of us unfortunate enough to have gone through this hell. Hi Dana, I really enjoyed your book which was full of great information with examples of narcissistic abuse. I have a narcissistic mother and was in a 16 year relationship with an awful narcissist who hurt me and my children. I only recently became free of my abuser and now am on the upswing for healing. I am in my 50’s and until a year ago had no idea of who a pathological narcissist is. I knew I was abused but was in a state of utter confusion. I’m really hoping that the education of narcissism and abuse becomes more widespread including education in schools. For so long, I didn’t even realize that I was abused. After spending years in an relationship realizing something was seriously wrong and unable to figure out why. This helps you. I finally got out. It's a pattern of severe abuse but it's so sublime that you don't see it coming and don't know it's going on. This book was really helpful.

At age 60 I just discovered my mother has NPD. Suddenly, my whole life made sense, whereas before I thought something must be wrong with me for my mother to be so displeased with me. I set firm boundaries with her and she immediately gave me the silent treatment. I haven't spoken to her in seven months--her choice. But what freedom! Finally! This book was so helpful in explaining narcissistic abuse.

I wish this book existed a year ago when I first started the journey of discovering what a toxic person was and all the terms associated with it. Dana is one of the best on this topic. She does a lot for the community! If you are just finding out about this, i urge you to read this book and read as many as you can about the subject and head the advice given! The journey is tough but it is beautiful and will change your life for the better!

This book is a definite page turner. I have had it for a few months now, however I have a ton of books on Healing from narcissism. The more I read the more I understand stand that no I am not confused, no I am not crazy, I do not deserve to be treated like this and you no longer serve a purpose in my life because no one deserves to be abused or mistreated. I will probably finish this book tonight. If not tomorrow. Great read! 👍
