I agree with David F 's review. I am fairly new to amateur radio and also recently received my (first level) Technician's license. I do not have a background in radio or electronics but was interested in moving up to the (second level) General license.This ARRL book, like the Technican's book, provides the information needed to pass the current FCC General exam (always choose the latest edition for current exam information), along with every question on the exam and the correct answers. Technical information is provided in relatively small chunks, in a manner that is fairly easy to learn and understand.Due to the contents of the exam, some of the material is quite technical and some (such as which frequencies are assigned for specific uses) simply must be memorized. But the book does try and explain other exam material (such as circuits, components, antennas, etc.) and gives examples.Again, this book will not teach you everything about ham radio but will help you pass the FCC General license test. It can be used as a self study guide for someone with a technical background, or together with a course taught by a local radio club to really learn the material.

I just passed the General test using only this book and an exam site online. Same question pool but it was just easier to read the questions online instead of flipping through the book.Read the book cover to cover. Stop and answer the questions when prompted. Don't move on until you understand the material. Review the question pool over and over. Done.Please don't just memorize the questions in the book and take the test. You are just hurting yourself and other Ham's who understand the hobby. But I digress...This book covers every topic necessary to pass the test. The is the second tier of Ham license and the book does expect you to know the basics of amateur radio as well as have a good grasp of basic electronics and electronic theory. It hits heavily on radio wave propagation, electric principles, circuit components and antennas. The intent in my opinion is to really make sure you won't screw up once you start hitting HF bands and start using the higher end equipment.Buying this for the test is a no-brainer.The test was much harder than the Technician test but if you study and understand the material presented in the book you will pass easily.

I am just another voice adding my opinion to an already well reviewed book. I bought this book and ran through it pretty quickly to prepare for the general exam. It is laid out fairly well (not by question set though) and the pool in the back is great. The book boasts detailed question explanations which it does, just not right next to the question. Each question references the page number in the book which has the information relating to the question. So, it references where you can find the answer but does not explain each individual question separately. However, there is another book put out by the arrl I think that does that, the Q&A general book. I like this book because I want to learn how to be a better operator and not just how to pass a written multiple choice exam. Anyways, great book and amazon has had it on sale for some time now, so pick it up and upgrade, you will be glad you did. With a little work, you could upgrade in a few weeks tops.

I agree with many of the reviews here and won't bore you with a rehash of their good info. I just passed my General test today and did well, and as someone who has to work at their studies, wanted to recommend this reference and maybe offer some advice.I found a path that really worked for me, someone who travels a lot and has a lot of things going on in life. I started studying with the W5YI Gordon West book and audio CDs, which are entertaining and make learning fun and easy. Once done with that, I went through this reference, which gave greater detail and allowed me to go from "memorizing" to "understanding." Finally, I found the practice tests at KB0MGA dot net to be a great way to help focus in on things that just took me a bit longer to get down.So, if you are studying for the General test, this book is a must. Good luck on your test, and looking forward to hearing you on the air.Brian

I passed my General test with it. The material is written so that it flows from the Tech book. A problem that I feel could be improved is that it lists material in a cold presentation. Why and how examples are parts that could be improved on. Being new to ham radio, obviously I hadn't done HF with a tech ticket. I took this exam without understanding a lot of what I memorized. Now, I understand it better and can relate to the text a lot better. The electronics part was difficult for me, and after attempting to memorize a lot of equations,I was surprised as how little of it was actually on the test. While old timers may argue the case, I honestly don't see the need to understand component boards to the extent in the book. While I might make some baluns, and other stuff, I don't plan on building my own radio.

CAUTIONThis is the SIXTH Edition of the General Class License Manual that is not the current study guide. The current is the SEVENTH and will be superseded on July 1, 2015. Some of the material caries over but it may make a difference in passing your exam.You are warned.CAUTION.[Amazon: please work on your sorting algorithm. If I ask for the 7th edition I do not want to see other versions in the main search.]

I can't quibble with the other reviews. However, like the Tech Manual, this one is incomplete. Too little in-depth explanation about HF equipment, in particular.The Gordon West General manual, for review purposes only, is a great complement to the ARRL book. The two books together allow a self-study student to master the exam content.All of that said, radio is a hands-on, visual and auditory learning experience. Passing the exam is just getting your ticket punched to allow you the privilege of playing.

These ARRL training materials are always good. Make sure to check the version when ordering. This one is current in 2017.

Oh man! Mystery, supernatural, alternate history, and a touch of steamfunk – this tale of murder and the supernatural is simply amazing! The division of the US is a great concept and woven into the tale. No info dumps here! Strange murders bring paranormal detective Mona Livelong into a wild tale of murder and mayhem with tidbits of traditional African and southern supernatural traditions leading to a compelling end.Note: there's some sex in the story, I'd put it into the New Adult range (you all know I hate romance and erotica) and not explicit (thank goodness!). A little more detailed than "they kissed," but then they wake in the morning without all the sticky details, LOL!I highly recommend this story and am adding the next books – yes, there's more! – to my wish list!! I read this entire story in one sitting. So much for going to bed early!

The overall background is replete with steam powered machines, nifty clockwork gadgetry, and stunning fashion reminiscent of the late 19th century. The events in the story occur in the 1970s. The United States is split into two nations, one a ardently white supremacist regime, the other, striving for racial equality, but burdened by persistent, customary racism. The alternate geo-political context plays every bit as crucial a role in this novel as the demons, monsters, gods and goddesses that populate its pages.Mona Livelong is smart, skilled and courageous. She's also a warrior who's not intimidated by the evil she confronts or the danger intrinsic to her job. This book is a truly enjoyable read, bearing the titillating promise of a sequel...better yet, a series.

A fascinating mix of steamfunk, alternate history, and supernatural horror. The world Valjeanne Jeffers has created in this novel is complex and intriguing, but the focus here is on the story, which kept me turning pages late into the night. Mona Livelong is a worthy addition to the tradition of occult detective literature. I'm looking forward to reading the next novel in this series, and I hope there will be a third.

This book literally had me at the edge of my seat. I have the bruises on my butt cheeks when I hit the floor as proof. Valjeanne Jeffers beautifully crafted several different scenarios together creating a fantastic story and a wonderful character in Mona Livelong. On top of that, Jeffers had woven a romance into the story that felt believable.Mona Livelong is now one of my favorite fictional characters. Can't wait until I can get my hands on Mona Livelong 2

Enjoyable and inventive, this story has the kind of unique setting that is a treat to me. I've read a lot of murder mysteries and enjoefhe mix of genres.

In many ways, this is the best installment in the series. From the first page, picking up where book 5 left off, it's the Mist Village against foes which are out of their weight class, and there is no way out but through. The book is merciless. Richter and his village are being pulled into conflicts and the tension and weight of choices are palpable. Time matters. Decisions to delay or engage matter. His alliances are two-edged swords, demanding more of him, not just giving. Richter has to call on everything he and his allies have built over the past five books and -- very satisfyingly -- his lieutenants have grown into their roles (Caulder, Terrod, Tabia, ...). It isn't Richter against a dungeon or a crypt mistress or a spider queen, or even a rock troll. It's the Mist Village gathering and striking at an existential threat before it is too late if it is not already.

First, the pros. I like the writing style, here. It is fairly well written, which is a big plus for this particular genre. The main character is likeable and relatable, and the storylines are interesting. However...In most of the books, the beginning of the story sets up a new Quest that you think will be the focus of the story...and yet, it rarely is. The beginning of each book generally introduces a long-term Quest that is then barely touched upon for the rest of the story. By the end of this book, there are several quests that were introduced all the way back in the very first book of the series that have barely been touched, much less completed. Often, the title of the book will make you think that you know what the book is going to be about...but you would be wrong. There are no alliances formed in the title Alliances, the catacombs are not explored in the book Catacombs.What I'd really love to see is of the earlier quests get completed, so we get the feeling that both the book and the character are moving forward. Instead, it all feels fairly random, and you are left at the end of each book with a feeling of incompletion.

I really like how this series is progressing. The attention to detail is superb, though maybe a tad bit too detailed (or it could just be me, lol).Aleron continues to surprise me in they way his story goes in unintended arcs.I do wish that at some time he takes a break from constant battles in just the Mist Village area to a bit more of the actual world. Bring Richter some place he doesn't have all of the control he usually wields. I'd also like to see a bit more of an unconventional alliance thing happen at some time, like make friends with normally hostile race and convert them to his side.Just my thoughts.Overall though, damn good series and while Aleron's title might be a bit presumptuous or ostentatious, he does seriously give good credit to the title. I think we can let him keep it for now, lol.

This was the first book of this writing style I read. I will say that I am hooked and absolutely will be reading more. I couldn't believe the detail the author used and how he made sure you understood the characters.I loved the progression of all of the characters and the storyline. It takes alot for me to be hooked on a book so hard that I can't put it down and this one did that for me. To the point that my wife yelled at me for not paying attention to her. I felt like I was right beside Richter through the whole book.I will definitely be referring my friends to this series

Chaos Seeds Books are brilliantly written. Enjoyable, believable, and the characters are well developed.I've read a lot of good stories about characters who get put through a lot, or are overpowered, underpowered, and get the feet chopped off but still continue walking kinda of thing. However, these books keep it reasonably real. Nobody wants to read about a hero loser. We want our hero to win, not get everything they want and become an OVERPOWERED GOD after two chapters.This series was a DELIGHT to read. I've read series 1 and 2 of other books where they kill off the main characters beloved companion or pet. While bad things happen even to GOOD HERO's.. I put the books down at that point and don't continue the series. This series is every bit deserving of the 5 stars, because it gives the reader and very enjoyable, realistic story of the life of the main character and his companions. High recommend this to anyone that enjoys fantasy as much as I do.

I can't say enough good things about this book, and this whole series. This was my first exposure to LitRPG, and I came across it totally by accident. I downloaded book 1 on my Kindle, then proceeded to spend the entire weekend burning thru the series. The writing is top notch, and I was completely drawn into the story line. I love the village-building aspect, as well as the characters themselves. The humorous interplay between the hero and his companions makes me chuckle. As a gamer (and a reader) for nearly 4 decades now, I'm thrilled by this new genre and the possibilities it provides.Since discovering the genre a few weeks ago, I have burned through several series by authors like G. Akella, Vasily Mahanenko, Christopher Booth, Michael Chatfield, and D. Rus. While I've enjoyed them all, I recommend Chaos Seeds above all others. If you've read this series and are waiting for the next release, maybe check out some of these other authors. And tell your friends. More people should be able to enjoy these books!
