This is a difficult book to review. On the one hand, it's beautifully written, the prose is fantastic, and the backstory has clearly been meticulously planned out. On the other hand, not much happens and that backstory makes things a little confusing.Wren is an Augur, one branch of the old Druids of Ireland. Augurs are at war with Judges, the other branch, over magical sites called nemeta. Without nemeta, each side loses their powers. A nemeta can only work for either augurs or judges, not both. The judges are 'winning' at the moment, with more and stronger nemeta than the augurs have. Wren's coven come up with a risky plan to have her work for the area's leading judge to look for a map that will help them find nemeta. At least, that's what Wren is told is the plan.Of course there's a handsome boy judge, and of course there's double crossing and confusion and changes of information and Wren wavering from one group to the other. By the time the story ends I'm honestly not 100% sure which side she's on; I'm fairly sure I know, but not certain. The story's unmoored in time, too. There's one mention of Coke and one of a Kardashian. If not fir those I would have guessed 100 years ago.Apart from those things, though, it's a good, interesting story, and I'll be watching out for the sequel.Receiving an ARC did not alter my opinion in any way.

Tl;dr: A fresh, exciting contemporary/historical fantasy novel aimed at young adults but good for adults as well. The Wren Hunt is so good! The first few chapters might be a bit confusing for those unfamiliar with Irish/Celtic mythology as Ms. Watson starts the novel with a (literal) chase and doesn't let up the pace at all-- rather than going for the typical " here's all the info!" dump found in so many fantasy novels, you're left, much like Wren, the mc is, to figure it all out.The writing is lyrical and concise--there isn't a word wasted here. As for the plot, no spoilers except to say there are several twists in The Wren Hunt, most of which aren't surprising but one, at least for me, was as unexpected as it was for Wren. I love it when a novel surprises me!I also have to say that it was utterly refreshing to have the main male charcter's name be Tarquin. I mean, Tarquin! Granted, he goes by Tarc, but still. Given that use of the name usually inspires a character who is a total prat, I loved seeing it repurposed so awesomely. And! The way The Wren Hunt mixes contemporary and historical, fantasy and folklore--and does it all without being hundreds and hundreds of pages? Awesome with a side of fabulous! Finally, I do hope this a stand alone! I loved the ending, which didn't tie everything up--and I adore that because life very rarely ends neatly and it's wonderful when novels do that: show you a world, make you care, and let you go with a kiss of hope as you leave.I do think The Wren Hunt will appeal to teen readers--I am certainly going to do my best to get it to Maggiec Stiefvaetr fans and even all the fantasy readers who think they don't like contemporary novels, and I think it would appeal to adult readers as well, especially those looking for a well written and fast paced contemporary novel that mixes fantasy, folklore, and even mystery in a fresh way.I did receive an ARC, but liked this so much I preordered it, and will be investigating Ms. Hunt's backlist through The Book Depository. The Wren Hunt is a well written, fast paced, and unique novel that appeals to fans of almost any genre? What's not to love?! An easy five stars.

The Wren Hunt is a book about magical beings in our world, but I was totally unconvinced. It took me a long time to figure out where the setting was and even then I wasn't completely sure. I had a hard time juxtaposing T.V's and cans of Coke with the magical characters. They just didn't seem to mesh well together, despite the authors best efforts. I'm not expecting to everything about the magical world or how it operates but we weren't given enough throughout the beginning for me to really understand what was going on or how their world operated. We open to a scene where Wren is chased through the woods by boys from the rival magic gang(family?). Apparently this happens every year and a trophy is taken. It's unclear as to why they chase her and don't celebrate the Wren Hunt like the rest of the world. It's never mentioned why they don't go to the police about the chase or why it even happens at all. I'm not sure what the Wren Hunt is even about.I don't sympathize with Wren nor connect with her. I don't with any of the characters for that matter.I'm not sure what I was hoping to get from this book, but I certainly didn't get it. There was nothing that really stood out for me about this book and I spent most of the time confused and not really enjoying what I was reading.*Thank you to Netgalley for this review copy*

The Wren Hunt was such a unique book. I loved the mythology, the long-standing feud between the two magical factions, and the juxtaposition of magic and the modern world. The Augurs and the Judges were both intriguing, I liked that the author delved a bit into the history of the conflict and explained more about each side. There were also some great family dynamics. I enjoyed seeing how the relationships between characters developed and changed over the course of the book. However, the ending felt a little rushed and incomplete to me. I was left with a lot of unanswered questions about the world and how certain aspects of the book tied in. Although this is a standalone, the ending really felt more like a setup for a sequel. That being said, The Wren Hunt was still an overall enjoyable read.Disclaimer: I received this book for free from the publisher. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

About the Author

Robert Marshall notes that Joe McGinniss, the writer who caricatured him in Blind Faith, also wrote Fatal Vision -- a book that was successfully rebutted, in 1996, in Fatal Justice . Marshall still receives letters saying that outside observers feel there were too many loose ends on his case, that his true story has not yet been told, and that Blind Faith made no sense.Tunnel Vision is his response. It gives the readers a chance to know the real Robert Marshall.

There are two issues -- Am I glad I read this book? Yes. Is Marshall's story believable? No.The latter issue first. Here's the giveaway: When you are wrongly convicted of your wife's murder and have spent years in jail, you really don't indulge what are apparently still-pleasant memories of your mistress right in the beginning of the book. His wife was brutally murdered, and he can't wait to tell us about his mistress. Now, is it a bad book? No. It's well-organized, not badly written, and shows the mind of a murderer. Really, it's worth a read.

He died in the Big House so it's all immaterial now. I liked the aliases for the kids; I always expected Mike , Steve, Ernie, Uncle Charlie and the rest of "My Three Sons" to arrive at any moment. So sad and unnecessary for everyone involved, (except for the attorneys who cleaned up), but there's nothing new there.

I read Tunnel Vision because I wanted to hear Robert O Marshall's side of the story. I concluded that only the most hard-core of the wrongly convicted junkies could believe his version of this saga. It is simply implausible, incredible and over the top.First of all, each page drips with Marshall's unabashed narcissism. He's the guy who's the best at everything. The best tennis player, the best blackjack player, the best skier. All the hot women want him. He writes this story like some kind of prisoners fantasy of the high life he once lived. But after reading the book, I came away with a new theory as to what happened here. I think Marshall steadfastly maintains his innocence because it was never his original intent to have his wife murdered. Many unhappily married men have a dark thought now and then about what life would be like if their wife were just gone and away with. A chance encounter with an out-of-towner, Robert Cumber, turned that dark thought into a sprouting seed. Marshall met Cumber at a party in May of 1984 ( a party he didn't even want to go to, but his wife insisted he attend. ) He writes that he and Cumber sat at the bar for four hours, ' got tight ', and confided in each other their marital problems. Cumber said he knew a former Sheriff's deputy back in Louisiana. For Marshall, the great risk assessor, who named his own boat Double Down, the wheels started turning. Who but a former law enforcement officer to be a hired hitman? Marshall proceeded to feel out the situation and decided that summer that it was worth the risk to hire somebody to kill his wife. He would be rich and rid of her and free to be with the new love of his life. There is a saying, Nobody talks, Everybody walks. Problem was, his hit man decided to talk to save himself when the police investigation found out about him. In the end, Marshall bet it all and he lost. The other irritating aspect of this book, was the weak substitute of people's real names. For instance, he refers to Mudman Simon as Mo Muddling. Come on, this was a death row inmate. What is he protecting? The guy's reputation? I gave the book two stars because it was fairly interesting, if obviously a false story Marshall has had decades to manufacture. And I don't think he is a dangerous criminal or a threat to others. In fact, as he was once the big dog in the Toms River social scene, he probably is the brightest guy at New Jersey State Prison. The murder of his wife was a one time desperation deal. He rolled the dice and he lost.

I'm innocent! The universal cry of all men (and women) on death row. Or, "ok, the evidence was videotaped and witnessed by six nuns, so NOW I'VE FOUND JESUS so don't kill me."This man takes chutzpah to a new level. Everybody's soooo mean to him. Those nasty old prosecutors and cops who followed the evidence right to his smarmy door. The man is guilty and turns and twists to hard to try to wiggle out that this book needs a chiropractor.

Robert O. Marshall is a sociopath. He is absolutely guilty and try as he might to convince the world of his innocence it's just not believable. Now, that isn't to say that there are certain aspects of the legal system that were highlighted in this abomination that should be reconsidered. I do not think it's in our interest as a society to have the same judge oversee a trial and all of the subsequent appeals. If only because it gives creeps like Marshall something to cry over.I could go on and on about why he's still guilty beyond reasonable doubt, and why I believe his own words prove his guilt. But read it for yourself and see what you think.

A sorry attempt to explain how he was "framed" for his wifes murder. Bad lawyers, lying cops, corrupt legal system. Yeah right! He is guilty as sin and deserves to be right where he is. This book is a waste.

An interesting book because of its author; a convicted murderer. Marshall and his late sister did a good job with the writing, but fail to answer too many questions. Why Marshall spent thousands supposedly hiring private investigators from Louisiana to check on missing money in his Harrah's account, something which is central to the story, is never really cleared up. Nor does he address why even his two eldest sons concluded that he was guilty -- not by itself proof of guilt, but worth wondering about. As literature and as debate material, ultimately disappointing.

If Rob Marshall is innocent in the death of his wife then he is the most unlucky man on earth. I mean what are the odds that a man from Lousiana,a man Marhall had sent large chunks of money to, would just happen to be in a deserted park in New Jersey after dark when Marshall just randomly pulled in there because of "tire" trouble. And then this Louisiana guy gives Marshall a little bump on the head and kills his sleeping wife for no apparent reason. Its just a little hard to believe, don't you think. I would like to see some of those crime solving psychics take a look at this case, and Scott Peterson and Jeffrey McDonald, and see what conclusion they come to.

Ask my nine-year-old what she loves about book two in the Halley Harper series and she will tell you the major science mishap at the Halloween party. Every science girl's worst nightmare. Ask me what I love about the Halley Harper series and I will tell you that I love how science is integrated seamlessly into a fun story about friendship. Big science concepts are taught in bite-sized ways, which leave readers excited to experiment and eager for the next book in the series. As a former educator, I know there isn't much time left in daily schedules for science, but as I was reading Halley Harper, I thought this book would make a great read aloud for a class, and a fun way to squeeze more science into a tight schedule. I also think this book would be great for an organization that already talks about friendship, confidence, and making mistakes and learning from them...maybe something like Girls on the Run. Or (look at all of these ideas!), this would be a great take-home gift for a science themed birthday party or a science camp.Oh and I noticed the author has loads of resources on her website. My girl and I are obviously fans. Bring on book three.

Ready for s'more science? Ms. Borgmeyer continues to weave fun Science into Halley Harper's "hair raising" (spoiler alert) adventures. Kids will find this quick read very relatable. The short quick read chapters are ideal for bedtime being read to or read alone, but be prepared to read more than one or two or.... kids will anxiously want to turn the pages and follow Halley's adventures.Don’t fret about the science elements turning kids off... they are skillfully interwoven into the story and seem just a natural extension of Halley. The underlying themes of magic, friendship and forgiveness are refreshing..... looking forward to Book #3!

This was a great follow-up to the first book. The author has already made you love the characters in the first book, and now you immediately find out that something is wrong. How is Halley ever going to fix it? The author does a great job of sneaking in science learning in the story of the book. As an adult I enjoyed it immensely, but the kiddos that I bought if for enjoyed it even more. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a great read.

Finding appropriate books for my kids can sometimes be difficult but the Halley Harper books make it an easy choice with engaging story lines, relatable characters and awesome science themes. The second book came at a perfect time during summer when we needed new reading material. Not only did my kids love the book, they found inspiration for several science experiments. My kitchen may be more of a mess but my kiddos had a blast! I did receive the book as an advanced reader copy but also purchased it for my family’s Kindle devices.

My daughter absolutely LOVES Halley Harper. She loved the first book and would constantly ask when this second book would come out. Once it was in her possession, she did not put it down until she finished it. It’s great to know that there is a book out there that is not only pure for a child to read, but that is also inspirational and encouraging to young girls to come to appreciate science and all it exposes us to.

This second book of the Halley Harper series expands on the themes of the previous "Summer Set in Motion" book. But now there are old friendships to restore, new friendships to make, and unexplained mysteries to solve with a twist at the end – all with the help of science. This is a great book to power kids’ interest in science and reading – for both girls and boys!

A wonderful story that weaves science into a child's life that will benefit them and our nation, Great Job! Dr. Qooz

Super fun book for my 6-year old daughter and I to read together. She’s just beginning to read so we took turns reading pages. She loves all the fun experiements they do and that they found the secret treasure. I like that the books make the science accessible and fun while weaving it into stories of friendship.
