I really love this journal because of how it keeps to the necessities. There was another book journal that I was considering, but this one is the one I chose because it kept to the necessities and it was easily organized. There's a page at the beginning for the owner's name, some pages for a table of contents, and then over 100 pages for the books you record. It's very simple, while still remaining thorough. Each book gets two pages. On the first page you can record the title, author, publisher, genre, number of pages, how you discovered the book, when and where it was read, and noteworthy experiences while reading. Then it has a section on the pages where you can rate quality of writing, pace, plot development, characters, enjoyability, insightfulness, ease of reading, and photos or illustrations if applicable. It also has sections for whether you recommend it and to whom. On the second page is where you can write things like the summary, or about characters or whatever it is that you want to note. At the bottom of that page you can rate the overall book on a five star scale.After that, there are pages for books you's like to read (with its own table of contents), pages for "my books," a book groups section, a recommended acclaimed authors section, and a section with different headings where you can make different book lists. I also like how small it is. I can carry it with me on trips if I plan on finishing books during that time, so it's not like carrying an extra regular-sized book around. It also seems to be pretty sturdy. The cover is a somewhat hard shell, but the material is what you need to worry about if you care about keeping it looking pristine. It's one of those materials that scratches easily and turns from matte to shiny wherever it's scratched. There's also a convenient elastic strap that you can use to keep your place. All in all, it's very user-friendly.

I've always kept a very simple journal for books I read, and thought I might enjoy this more detailed ledger. In practice, I find I consistently leave blank certain sections (Scales of 1-10, Publisher, Noteworthy experiences) and don't have enough room for the main Notes & Opinions of each book. In the back of the journal there are also a lot of pages devoted to other concerns (Contacts, Wish List, Book Group info, etc.). Since this is a spiral-bound journal, I actually ripped out some of the pages I knew I was never going to use. I'm sure some readers might love this “comprehensive” journal, but I think I prefer a more bare-bones “what I read and what I thought” diary.I notice from some review photos that earlier reviewers got a slightly different version of this book, with a simple printed title and spine. My book has the large circular graphic and band that wraps around, and it's a plastic label/sticker that I wanted to remove but was afraid to. I think it makes the book look kind of cheap.

I moderate several online book groups and maintain a reading website. I have been extremely picky about my book journal for 2012 - with all of the books I go through, I really wanted something different!I recently ordered this journal from Amazon after seeing it at B&N with a higher price tag. I am extremely pleased with it, and I have to say that it is my favorite book journal I have ever looked at or owned. This will become my annual journal starting in 2012. It is the perfect size for tucking into a purse or bag, but not so small that writing in it is awkward.I used a Moleskine journal this past year and ultimately cast it aside. I became very annoyed with the alphabetical layout (I prefer to go in chronological order) and the really thin pages. I stopped using it during the summer and tossed it in the trash when I went on a cleaning binge this fall. I also didn't like how it had blank spaces. I REALLY prefer lines to write on! I did save my leftover stickers to use in this book!The journal is black with the print "The Book Lover's Journal" on the front in white font. It is about 7 x 4.6 inches and has a covered spiral ring binding. This was a real disappointment. The "spiral-bound" aspect of this journal is nearly useless as it is bound over the spiral. It doesn't open very far. Only five entries in and the pages are misshapen and I can't lay it flat enough to write in. I also don't like that the sticker thing on the front does not peel off. It's sealed on there and cannot be removed. Additionally, I liked the layout and format but the spaces are so small you have to write really small to fit it in there. I would not recommend this journal.

Typically sequels are not as good as the original. NOT THE CASE HERE. This is just as good and is a perfect companion to the Blessed Life.I first read the Blessed Life about 2.5 years ago. It is a simple book, but POWERFUL. I decided to take steps forward and obey, including increasing my giving and setting goals. When I made the decision to move forward in faith on this, I could not have anticipated the many ways God would supernaturally bless my finances. I can tell you that several supernatural UNEXPECTED Blessings came straight from God...no other explanation was possible. As a result God used the original principles of the Blessed Life to get me entirely debt free including mortgage debt in a period of 2 years. This sequel is just as full of wisdom as the original Blessed Life. It will inspire and encourage, but also teach.It's not going to go into details like "here's a budget spreadsheet"...there's plenty of people that can do that.But it will give you the more specific principals and ways to accomplish the true Blessed Life.

Robert Morris writes about being a good steward with God's money, because that's where the money comes from, God. He owns it, we are merely the stewards. One important thing about being a good steward and the reason I bought this book is to learn how to stay out of debt. Morris writes about the fact that one reason we get into debt is that we want to acquire "stuff." This is a material mindset and worldly. It is not of God. When we break this desire for "stuff," we can stop the impulse buying. Morris writes that credit cards are not inherently bad. If you do not charge so much that you cannot pay it off at the end of the month, you are still a good steward. Another thing Morris writes about in this book that will help to control impulse spending is keeping a budget. He even gives a suggestion for people whose paychecks fluctuate from month to month. He writes that one should average them. However, that doesn't work in extreme cases where one sometimes has a monthly paycheck of zero one month and fifteen hundred another, or what happens when one becomes unemployed for a period of months. In the case of a fluctuating paycheck the best way to deal with it, I've found is to make a separate budget for each month. Finally, Morris closes with the main reason for the book. We are to be good stewards so we can bless others. It will make us joyful as we give to others, most of us find this to be true. One last thing I will add that Morris hasn't is that besides joy, being a good steward will give you an incredible sense of peace. You will no longer worry about money.Morris is an excellent writer and has authored a wonderful book which is a good resource for Christians.

This was a really awesome broad view of finances and brings it in to what I can do to change bad habits. It is not the 'prosperity message' but 'stewardship message'. The author goes along side of you and gives a perspective on 'blessing' management I would say. It really rings true in my heart and what a great communicator. Looking forward to the workbook coming out in February.

I love Robert Morris, but this book is too general to be of much help to getting finances in order. The content makes for good sermons: don’t try to keep up with the Jones’s, etc. But the specifics of how to manage finances is all left for the end. In other words, there’s a lot of pep talk, but not enough how to.I’ve read several other books based on the same biblical principles that were of much more actual help than this book. So if you really need specific advice, find one of those.

As with ALL Pastor Morris's book this one is Holy Spirit inspired with practical information. Easy read, easy to study the principles inside. Recommend EVERYONE buy it.

This Word-based book is filled with many kinds of practical living strategies that Pastor Robert has learned over his lifetime. Thank you for writing such a wonderful book! I didn't know what I needed to know about tithing. It takes The Blessed Life book one step further, and shows us that tithing is the beginning, but saving and giving freely is the three step process that gives us a complete life of joy.

 Looks great. I laughed a little when I opened. The cover is actually a picture of the cover being lifted back to reveal the pages 😂.Pages are a decent thickness and the cover has a nice feel to it. It’s a great purchase for the price.

The image of the cover bent back is actually how the cover looks. It's not actually the cover bent back. Why on earth would they make the cover a picture of the cover bent over? It looks ridiculous and very unprofessional. And the pebbly texture is a picture also - it's not actually pebbled. That I don't have as much of an issue with since it's inexpensive, but the cover is awful and looks so stupid. On the plus side, the paper is reasonably thick.

Good ledger with nice spacing and easy to read columns, although very let down with the fact that the cover is exactly like it is in the picture where it demos what the inside looks like.

I’ve always been fascinated by America, the American experiment, the American experience. In college, I found my place in the sociology, anthropology, political science and literature of the American people, values and ideals. My novels are born of the culture of merging, conflicting cultures we, as Americans, were born into, from my conviction that dealing with that experience is the challenge of being American. Only once before, in 1968, have I had the horrifying sense that the country was coming apart under the strain, a sense of the great experiment disintegrating.What has happened to us? Where did this disintegration into hate and violence, this contempt for our institutions begin and where is it taking us? From all of my early studies, the work that keeps coming to mind, as I look for answers is Alexis de Tocqueville’s Democracy in America. De Tocqueville was a French aristocrat who hated tyranny and feared that democracy would disintegrate into tyranny of the majority. He understood, however that democracy was the future, so in 1831 he came to America in order to see it in action. To my mind, no student should graduate from high school in the United States without reading his observations and reflections on the American people, for we desperately need to renew our sense of not only the hope but the challenges of being an American and a commitment to support its survival as a democracy.De Tocqueville feared individualism and the abolition of the class system that, he believed, gave order and stability to the European nations. He believed that without that order, people would be forever anxious about where they belonged and would end up forever comparing themselves to each other. Forever insecure, their individualism would devolve into selfishness and each would end up alone. We should take a good look at ourselves in light of this fear. Has our insecurity, our need to know where we belong splintered us into rival groups where each gains stature by debunking the other?However, De Tocqueville also found in the Americans, an equality unknown in Europe and with a deep sense of community and civil order. He found a people committed to building a new world, to resolving together the problems that confronted them. He believed that the multitude of civic organizations would counter the dangers of individualism. The men, he thought, would forever strive to power and acquisition of wealth, but the mores, the “habits of the heart” carried by the women, would provide the civilizing force.He has a great deal to say about the role of religion in the New World and many other subjects, but this gives a taste of a perspective different enough to shake up the all-to-stale ideologies that have broken us into enemy camps. We have indeed joined civil action groups, but we have, since Trump’s election, discovered the importance of unwritten mores, that undergird our common culture. That gives us the opportunity to regain our sense of belonging to a whole.His views on the role of women should spark lively conversations on individualism versus commitment for both genders as well as on the effect of the rampant greed of the eighties and nineties. This is a review of the Library of America 2004 edition of Democracy in America translated by Arthur Goldhammer, found here: Alexis de Tocqueville: Democracy in America: A new translation by Arthur Goldhammer (Library of America). Unfortunately Amazon lumps together reviews of several different editions from several publishers, so it is difficult to know which edition is being reviewed. For this reason, and because many others have reviewed the content of Tocqueville's amazingly insightful work, I will focus solely on the physical aspects of the Library of America edition.In my opinion, the Library of America edition is excellent. It is not the least expensive edition, but I believe it is worth the extra dollars, and is really quite reasonably priced given the quality. Considering it contains over 900 pages covering both volumes 1 and 2 of Democracy in America, the book is remarkably compact at 5 inches wide by 8 inches tall by 1.25 inches thick. This is made possible by using thin paper which still appears to be quite durable. The hardbound binding also appears to be very durable, and even contains a built-in ribbon marker. Even the dust jacket is made from heavier than usual stuff. The font used for the text is large and very clear. The 2004 translation by Goldhammer is in what I would call a modern style of English that I found easy to understand. In other words, I didn't have to fight the translation in order to follow and think about what Tocqueville was actually saying.There are several helps included. The frontispiece contains a map from the original 1835 edition that describes North America as it was when Missouri and Arkansas were the westernmost states. Translated from the French, it proved to be quite helpful at times. The end of the volume contains a chronology that is a pretty thorough biography of Tocqueville himself. There is also an extensive index, along with notes on the text and translation.All in all, I found this to be an understandable and durable edition that does justice to Tocqueville's timeless work. I recommend it.

It is quite amazing and by far my favorite translation and compilation of all things Tocqueville. How the books and chapters are divided at first seem confusing, but you quickly adjust if you are familiar with Tocqueville. I am definitely not a Tocqueville scholar, but I guarantee this is the greatest review of the American political system to this day. Pick up a copy of The Federalist Papers and Anti-federalist Papers while you're at it and you will have the quintessential trifecta of American democracy.

Given that I do not speak/read French, I cannot speak to the accuracy of the translation, however, this translation was a pleasure to read in English. Also, the footnotes were helpful, and the chronology section helped put Tocqueville himself in context nicely. I read the kindle edition, and it was well formatted.Apart from this specific translation/edition, I don't think that I can add much that isn't already out there about Democracy in America other than perhaps to point out that you are much less likely to find it interesting if you are not at least somewhat familiar with 18th and 19th century French history. If this is the case, I would recommend at least reading "Revolutionary France 1770-1880" by François Furet prior to starting Democracy in America.

Former Iranian President Mohammad Khatami said in a CNN interview in 1998:"This civilization is best described by the renowned French sociologist Alexi de Toqueville who spent some two years in the U.S. in the 19th century and wrote the valuable book entitled Democracy in America, which I am sure most Americans have read."Well, I don't think that's the case. I've taken this book around with me for the last few years and have asked many Americans... and have yet to meet one.
