Not what I expected but it turned out great! The book was a little above my 1st graders level (I read it to him) but the stories are so imaginative and culturally rich that we all enjoyed it.The book breaks into a few different sections, not a full account of a solstice which was a little different than what I wanted. Our goal was to relate the story of Jesus supposed birth sequence to its roots in the winter solstice tradition. I don’t think this book overtly does that. But it does plant the seed that other cultures and characters have their own stories about the sun and darkness and rebirth!

I read this book as a passenger on a short drive across the state. Pre-reading, in hopes that I could purchase several copies to give to kids at my Winter Solstice Party. I'm delighted to report that I've found my book giveaways! The book divided into 3 sections, with 4 stories per section. I'll read it again for sure.

This is a simple collection of stories from around the world with a common theme: losing and regaining light. I liked the author's complete respect for other cultures. I liked the organization. And I liked the stories she chose. This was a good read, one I'm going to keep, not one that will go the library used book sale any time soon.

We had a lot of fun reading these stories aloud each night leading up to the solstice. The writing is clear enough that my 4, 6, and 7 year olds could easily understand them, but not so overly simplified that it felt like a children's book.

The book seems like it was photocopied then binded or something, definitely not what I'd consider professional printing. The stories themselves and the writing is fine so we'll keep the book, but I don't think ithe poor quality is worth the $8.99 we paid.

I love fables and mythical metaphors. This book did n o t disappoint in either direction...you will enjoy it if you think like I do.

Interesting collection of folk stories about the sun and is meaningful and appropriate reading for the winter solstice. For those who want to recognize this solstice event in some manner, a quiet evening spent reading these stories would be a good choice.

Like the book said treat this book like you would a dream. I'm not sure of the accuracy of these stories as far as spirituality of the Coulter they come form. How ever this book was a wonderful book for the winter solstice, and bead time story my daughter told me to keep reading more.

This is THE log home bible. Of the three books I purchased, this one and only this one has everything we need to know about renovating our 100 year old cabins. And the most surprising information was that my husband agreed with me. And this guy is hard to sway, on any issue. The best twenty bucks we have spent on this whole property. You simply cannot start a reno or new project without this book. Save yourself the time, money and stress and GET this book. The only thing not covered is where to buy the product you need. Without showing any favoritism, the author mentions great products and then leaves the searching up to you. Not a problem. That's why we have the internet. If I could give more stars for this book, I would.

Bought this and another log home care and maintenance book. Both were really a huge help in repairing our newly bought 1970 Log House.Very easy to follow and full of steps to take in repairs that you do not even know as a new log home owner.

I love Alice Oseman's previous book Solitaire and I love Radio Silence just as much. One thing I love about Oseman's books is how realistic her teenage characters are. It's refreshing to read a book about teenagers where they actually sound and act like teenagers. (It helps that she is only a few years older than her characters.) I also love the diversity in this book in terms of both race and sexuality. It is something that is very much needed in books for all ages.One of my favorite things in this book is the friendship between Frances and Aled. They are both so sweet and wonderful and their friendship was great. I loved how it helped both characters grow. I especially loved their text conversations, they always made me smile.I didn't expect to love the side characters as much as I did. I also didn't expect to hate a character as much as I did. Every character is three-dimensional and so interesting to read about. It's hard not to care for them (except for the one).I appreciate how Oseman included an emotionally abusive relationship in this book. In other books I've read that mentioned abuse it was almost always physical abuse. Emotional abuse can be just as damaging so it's good it's talked about with the same level of seriousness.I did have one problem with the book and that is that the beginning is a bit slow. The chapters throughout the book were short so that made it easier to keep reading, but I felt like it took a bit to get the story really moving. However, once the story gets going I couldn't put it down.Overall, Radio Silence is a wonderful story full of laughs, heartbreak, and beautiful friendship. I can't wait to read it again.

“Hello. I hope somebody is listening.”Be prepared for a crazy amount of quotes.So, I didn't expect to finish the last 300 pages of this book last night. But I did. I also didn't expect to be completely drowned in this story. It took my feet and pulled and kept on pulling. A day later and I've yet to reach the bottom. That is how much it stayed with me. I'm beginning feel bad for people who haven't read this yet.I don't even know where to start. *deep breath* Okay...So, this is one of those books that I completely thought was different than it turned out to be. But it was a good surprise. Like Christmas morning and when you find a dollar in your pants pocket. The characters drive this story along. Oh, did I add that all of the main characters are queer? Not only that but there is so much diversity I almost ran outside and screamed for an AMEN.There were so many geek references in this book. Game of Thrones. Scott Pilgrim. SPIRITED AWAY. On top of some pretty awesome music selections. I feel like I need to be best friends with the author. Like now.The themes in this story include depression, sexual confusion, online bullying, and abuse but on top of that, you have friendships that wild horses could not pull apart, platonic love, long lost love, typical teenage problems like school and whether to check your Tumbler or not which made it so relatable. And even though Frances' mother was awesome, not all of the parentals figures were so understanding. Which is something a lot of teenagers can relate to for sure.“I stopped speaking. There was no point trying to argue. There was no way she was going to even attempt to listen to me.They never do, do they? They never even try to listen to you.”I almost forgot to talk about the individual protagonists as a whole. So, there's Frances, and she's obsessed with a podcast called University City which is about a person stuck in a monster-ridden city set in the future. She meets Aled, who happens ot be the creator of the podcast. Cool? Yep. Only he doesn't want the world to know that. He is a very private with some heavy family drama.“...it felt like we were friends. Friends who barely knew anything about each other except the other's most private secret.”It's a slow burn friendship and THANK THE SKIES, there is no romantic love between them. They have a beautiful, soul-mate type connection that feels so real and it makes me yearn for something like that.“And I’m platonically in love with you.”“That was literally the boy-girl version of ‘no homo,’ but I appreciate the sentiment.”Without giving too much away, Aled's podcast and his persona, Radio Silence hit me in the feels. When it all comes together, and we realize who he's speaking to and how deep his agony goes, it just ripped out my heart.“I wonder - if nobody is listening to my voice, am I even making any sound at all?"Sometimes, I think we all feel that way, and Radio's pain is our pain. This book was written for you and for me.

The book centers around two friends, one who is the anonymous Creator behind a podcast and one (the narrator) who is a fan of the podcast. It's a very fandom-y story at times, though not in a love letter to fandom kind of way; you both see love and support from fans but also harassment and doxing. Despite that, there's definitely a sense of the creation of this podcast and its associated art being home for the narrator and her best friend.A big point of the book is that there's not one best path for everyone after secondary school. "University isn't the right next step for everyone, even people who get good grades" is probably the most key message here, and I thought it was handled well.I read this largely because there's a demisexual character. There's a conversation between the demi character and said character's significant other about what asexuality is and isn't (which is well done), and the word demisexual is used on page. I have conflicted feelings about this conversation, but I still appreciate the representation.As complicated as it gets, I love the friendship between Frances and Aled. The messages between them in particular are gold.

I binge-read this at like midnight and it was probably one of the best decisions I made. The character journeys/relationship in this book felt natural. There was a wonderful m/f platonic relationship at the core which was so nice to read. The little excerpts of Universe City in every chapter really gave the podcast some life. I wish I could write down everything I loved about this book

I liked the fanfic elements of this, and the characters were A+. Varied, interesting and I wasn't sure where the story might go next. However, the black moment suffering part lasted for too much of the story and I feel that Frances wasn't the right protagonist for this story- the story was really about Aled and the book centered around his journey, but it was told by a side character, which was a little disorienting especially for the large part of the book when she didn't know what was going on with Aled. Great themes and characters but wrong choice of protagonist and a plot that felt a bit unbalanced. I might try others from this author though. 3.5 stars

About the Author

Fred Luthans is the George Holmes Distinguished Professor of Management at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. In 2003, he received an honorary doctorate from DePaul University. A prolific writer, he has published a number of major books and about 200 articles in applied and academic journals. His book Organizational Behavior Modification, coauthored with Robert Kreitner, won the American Society of Personnel Administration award for outstanding contribution to human resource management, and another book entitled Real Managers is the result of a four-year research study that observed managers in their natural settings. International Management, coauthored with the late Richard Hodgetts and Jonathon Doh, also published by McGraw-Hill, is in its seventh edition. He also has two recent books, The High Impact Leader (with Bruce Avolio, McGraw-Hill, 2006) and Psychological Capital (with Carolyn Youssef and Bruce Avolio, Oxford, 2007). The co-editor-in-chief of the Journal of World Business, Professor Luthans is also the editor for Organizational Dynamics and Journal of Leadership and Organizational Studies. He has been very active in the Academy of Management over the years and was elected a fellow in 1981. He is a former president of the National Academy in 1986 and, in 1997, received the Academy's distinguished educator award. In 2000 he became an inaugural member of the Academy's Hall of Fame for being one of the “Top Five” all-time published authors in the prestigious Academy journals. Also active in the Decision Sciences Institute (DSI), he was elected a fellow in 1987. Professor Luthans has a very extensive research program at the University of Nebraska. Most recently, he has developed positive organizational behavior, or POB, (outlined in 2002 articles in the Academy of Management Executive and Journal of Organizational Behavior ) and is conducting research on positive psychological capital and, with close colleague Bruce Avolio, authentic leadership. He has been a visiting scholar at a number of universities in the United States and has lectured at universities and conducted workshops for managers in many countries around the world. In recent years, he has been actively involved in Germany, China, Thailand, Singapore, Russia, Albania, and Macedonia. In addition, he has been on the executive committee of the annual Pan Pacific Conference since its beginning in 1984 and in 1995 was elected a fellow. This international research and experience is reflected in his approach to the field of organizational behavior. In addition, he is an active consultant and trainer to both private- (such as Wal-Mart and Ameritas Life Insurance, Inc.) and public-sector organizations. Since 1998 he has been a senior research scientist with the Gallup Organization. He is an avid golfer and University of Nebraska sports fan. He and Kay, his wife of 47 years, have four grown children and so far six adorable grandchildren.

Easy to follow with interesting and up-to-date content. Clearly discusses history, politics, and ideologies with relative examples. Contains several demographic charts and data tables. However, and I actually like this, the book contains no pictures. It's my senior year of college and I am glad the authors have geared this book towards 'grown-ups'. I hate paying hundreds of dollars for books full of stock photos and subtle ads for businesses. No nonsense. So far so good.

My fiancé got this for her courses at college. I can't really review this on her behalf, because I didn't read/use this book. But hey, she passed her course so this must work!

It was a long book I can tell you that much bit it help me study and passy class with a B+. I really enjoyed reading this book. There were no pages missing or writing on it which I really liked because I didn't have to read over someone else's hand writing.

If you are looking for detailed formulas to define the calc process of each indicator, do NOT get this book. If you are looking for one man's carefully-derived opinions about the usefulness of various indicators, you will like this book. To his credit, Colby describes walk-forward testing pretty well (albeit with some ambiguity) ... he uses that method to eval the formulae. But, rather than running tests over thousands of symbols for a decade or two, he runs the DowJonesIndex over many decades of history. Major indexes do NOT realistically model the much noisier behavior of the vast majority of stocks ... so his analyses are flawed ... they don't incorporate whipsaw effects. But, as stated initially, my biggest objection is that the description said formulae are provided for the indicators ... and many have NO formulae ... either since they are too complex, or since in the author's opinion, that particular indicator doesn't "warrant" further information. This exhibits a myoptic approach - he's presuming that since HE could not find a value in the indicator, then no one else could either. An "encyclopedia" should not present information with that much bias. INSTEAD OF THIS BOOK, buy "Technical Analysis from A to Z" by Steven Achelis. It's got detailed formulae, without all the bias ... and the "complex" formulae are available from a spreadsheet you can download. Colby's book overlaps A to Z a lot ... and offers little additional "encyclopedia" info ... very few "new" indicators beyond A to Z ... and many of those have no formulae.

Use this comprehensive, well written book along with Wikipedia to quickly orient yourself in the field of technical analysis and start using technical indicators right away, without wading through some author's possibly tedious and/or slanted overview. One great feature is that the author compares the results of of applying each technical approach to a baseline that is usually the results of buying and holding the DJIA for most if not all of the 20th century. This is a great help in ranking these indicators and picking the ones that attract us.

As indicated in my review about Mark Larson's book 12 Simple Technical Indicators that Really Work Course Book with DVD , The Encyclopedia Of Technical Market Indicators, Second Edition is a powerful addition to Mark's book. The Encyclopedia Of Technical Market Indicators, Second Edition gives a specific description of every technical indicator available, and then some. The most beneficial aspect of this book is that the investors will know exactly what a specific indicator measure and represents. This will make the investor more educated about analyzing and executing trades.

It is a very thick book and covers many indicators, but discussions on each is just about a couple pages long. One can get better info on these from the web. I got it but hardly read it after finding it does not contain useful info.

For the earlier review commenting that the formulas are only in Metastock I must comment that this is not the case.The indicators in the book are described in varying ways:1. Most of the indicators (and the method of their calculation) are described in prose. Sometimes there are no mathematical formulas visible, as the calculation is only described in the text.2. Very often the mathematical formula for the indicator is printed out. From these formulas it is quite straightforward to implement them in your selected calculator (be it in your head, Excel, any programming language..)3. For the most used and known indicators, the calculation is layed out in detail with printed step-by-step excel-sheets. For example, it is impossible for you not to undestand from the book how to calculate Exponential Moving Averages.However, the book does not only include definitions about market indicators, but also examples of their implementation. For most of the indicators a trading system is proposed (that is, exact rules when to buy or sell using the data given by the indicator), and the implementation of these systems are indeed described in Metastock language. Still the described systems are quite easy to understand even without Metastock background. The meaning of some of the metastock function calls may take some figuring out, but usually given the context of the text the code is quite easy to understand. Personally I am also a programmer and have never used Metastock, and still find all of the book most usable.The only negative aspect of the book I can say is that the level of description on the indicators varies quite widly. Some indicators may get several pages, while others are passed by with 10 lines of text. It would have been nice if all the indicators would have been given the same level of treatment, with at least simple mathematical descrioption for each. I usually prefer simple mathematics, and it was little disturbing to notice that sometimes formulas are described only in text.To conclude, this is after all a very comprehensive book, and by far the best collection of data on market indicators I have seen. Highly recommended dependless whether you are using metastock or not.

About the Author

Heather Mac Donald is the Thomas W. Smith Fellow at the Manhattan Institute and a contributing editor of City Journal. A non-practicing lawyer, Mac Donald has clerked for the Honorable Stephen Reinhardt, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, has been an attorney-adviser in the Office of the General Counsel of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and a volunteer with the Natural Resources Defense Council in New York City. The New Jersey State Law Enforcement Officers Association conferred its Civilian Valor Award on her in 2004. She was awarded the 2008 Integrity in Journalism award from the New York State Shields. She was also the recipient of the 2008 Eugene Katz Award for Excellence in the Coverage of Immigration from the Center for Immigration Studies and the 2012 Quill & Badge Award for Excellence in Communication from the International Union of Police Associations. Her writings have also appeared in the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, New York Times, The New Republic, Partisan Review, The New Criterion, Public Interest, and Academic Questions. Mac Donald received her B.A. in English from Yale University, graduating with a Mellon Fellowship to Cambridge University, where she earned her M.A. in English and studied in Italy through a Clare College study grant. Her J.D. is from Stanford University Law School.

I agree with many of MacDonald's points. I enjoyed the book. It gave me quite a bit to think about. However, as an objective reader, I couldn't help but be disappointed in the lack of citations or support for almost any of her claims. She brings up statistics a lot, which is fine...but rarely cites the sources (other than sometimes mentioning a government agency). No specific report, no study name, no year of study, etc.I expect writers who are attempting to compel their readers to their line of thinking to not only provide a well thought out argument (which she has done), but to also provide objective data and the sources (which she does not - for the latter).This book could have been used as a tool to arm those with knowledge that could be shared in a discussion. Instead, they are talking points. Undoubtedly, if you were to discuss these issues with someone of the opposing view, they would ask "How do you know that?" You can't very well say "Well, it's in some book I read" or "It was in some study from some agency."The exact opposite of MacDonald might be Ann Coulter. Ann is far more provocative and wanting a fight, but she cites every, frickin' source (at least the couple of books I've read of hers do). There are sources for days. But I enjoyed that. While I may not agree with the findings of the source, I enjoyed having the sources available for me to verify.MacDonald just insists that you take her word for it. And while for the most part, I do, it isn't a strong position I can have because I have no idea if what was claimed is actually true or is what is fairly represented by the agency she claims provided some general statistic.As a result, I think this book is more for a) "the choir," b) those who might be on the fence (or are curious) and don't care enough to want to research. For those of us who like to dig deeper, understand the facts of the matter, come to our own conclusions, this just doesn't cut it. It's kind of like the difference between reading a book and reading a summary of the book. It's a surface level treatment without providing sources/verification of her premises.

I was hoping for more - a more in-depth discourse on how the public, and police officers, should respond to the "war on cops". Unfortunately, it seems to me that Mac Donald dove too deeply into "the weeds" in her attempt to explain or justify her position that there is a war on cops. Not that I disagree, but this, for me, is where I began to lose interest in her exposé. Having served in law enforcement for 30 years, I concur with Mac Donald's conclusion that there is a war on cops. However, the war on cops started a very long time ago. Mac Donald appears to claim the discovery of the "Ferguson effect" - the reluctance by police officer to engage in self-initiated law enforcement activities in favor of reactive responses to perceived or actual criminal activity. I submit that that effect began in 1991, as the "Rodney King effect". Watch the video (ALL of them), read the transcripts of the state trial (in which the officers were acquitted), recall the condemnation by President George H.W. Bush (BEFORE the trial), actions by he US Attorney General, and subsequent conviction in federal court. The impact on law enforcement officers of that time was palpable. Mac Donald, I think correctly highlights the arbitrary and capricious nature of decision by federal judges, which I believe, suggests that the authority of individual federal judges should be curbed and substituted, at minimum, with federal judicial panels (3 or more judges) which would be more likely to consider all facts and render a more balanced opinion. Failure to address, and reverse, the war on cops (actual or perceived) could have catastrophic results. Cops enter the profession as young men and women - they want to serve, they have ideals, they want to make a difference in their communities. These cops risk everything - their job, their family, their reputations, and their freedom. Condemning cops, who are trying to do the right thing, as thugs, racists or criminals can only lead to a disastrous result not anticipated by their critics.

The Democrats have long had the Police under their radar. Less real policing allows political activists free rein to attack those they hate without any consequences. Soros has long funded violent activists to protest against borders, immigration, healthcare, and anything that will bring down countries. Poland banned him and his political activists ans so should the USA or any other Western World if they don't want their country to end up under a totalitarian state, the kind of state the wealthy love.

Ms.MacDonald doesn't dance around the ugly truth that solving America's crime problems seems to have taken second fiddle to exaggerating America's cop problems. For reasons I still don't understand, the left has decided that the annual deaths of as many as 6,000 black males is less important than the extremely rare unjustified police homicide of an innocent. Ms.Macadonalds reference to the destruction of the black family alludes to why; acknowledging their participation in that collapse indicts their entire agenda.

Ms. MacDonald does an amazing job of using indisputable facts to show the truth of the matter: there is NO crisis in America concerning law enforcement illegally or inappropriately using inordinate or excessive force against citizens, specifically persons of color. It occurs, of course, but it is statistically insignificant compared to how these allegedly discriminated-against groups assault, murder, and otherwise victimize themselves and each other. For example, young black male persons are far more likely to be killed by other young black male persons than law enforcement officers.The text is presented in a far better manner to understand than the invective often utilized by fringe groups, or the hyperbole chosen by the mainstream media. The book would be useful for students or researchers looking for data to combat the false narratives espoused by leftist groups.
