Ugh! All the joy and engagement of reading a dictionary to learn how to write poetry. Bought this for a PM elective in an MBA program and I'm now about half way through. I'm an experienced PM in industry and Government. I'm glad I didn't start with a text like this when considering PM duty. Else, I would have surrendered all enthusiasm (or hanged myself) and headed for job in the shipping department . This is an encyclopedic, monotonous, enumerative narrative with no literary cueues on the importance or significance of topics therein. It all just IS (or WAS). Once in a while there is an assertion from the old caste structure of business sounding like 19th century factory lore. Charts and graphics are so subjective and nondescript I can't fathom what they are intended to add - other than to increase page count. Many are very confusing for their minimalist labeling and severe lack of source data. Perhaps Kerzner was the best PM in recent history. No doubt he was the first to stretch the definition across so many pages to garner title of Bible of project management. But I am rather surprised even in the 11th edition it still feels like a 19th century tome, with so many plodding passive assertions leading inductively to every minute definition you'd swear it was written by Hume or Mill or Shopenhauer. I'm just very disappointed that after reading so many insightful and engaging texts on all the aspects of contemporary project management, I now find myself here in a graduate class with a reference text that doesn't really offer any conviction for what is good or bad, right or wrong, optimal or suboptimal for business today and tomorrow. Rather it examines archaeologically the pot shards and bone fragments in the strata below the current enterprise to estimate at how we arrived in present day.

This is a book packed with project management information, with ties to the PMI certification exam in every chapter (which may be useful to folks using this to help study for their PMP). In my opinion, this book could use some revision to better organize and present the information it contains. There are long "laundry lists" of things to take into account, some of which might be more digestible if they were hierarchically organized. The author appears to have a lot of experience, and appears to have tried to capture the full range of his experience in this book. One drawback of this approach is that it reads to me more like a "brain dump" than a structured, systematic approach to understanding the topic.

Very thorough book on project management. But poorly referenced and it's very difficult to find anything. I reference the book in my classes on project management and know a lot of project managers who own it. But I never talked to a project manager who actually read the entire book. It's a much better reference than a textbook.

This is a great outline for project management and the case studies are subjects everyone can relate to. The mathematical side of this book is a bit unclear- but what mathematical book is clear? Overall, It was a great resource I'll be keeping for the future.

Terrible for use in the classroom. The problems and case studies don't pull from information in the book. The information, especially in chapter 11, isn't laid out well and is confusing. Kerzner often interchanges terms like project and program management that shouldn't be interchanged. I would not recommend this edition for classroom use.

Next to the "Communications Bible" from Dow and Taylor, this is the other must-have book from my Master of Science in Project Management program. I wouldn't think of selling it now that I've graduated (and anyway, it's full of my highlights and notes!). Between these two books, I have the basics and then some.There is so much in this text we were able to use it in three classes. One of my classmates didn't like all the bulleted lists -- there's rarely a two-page span without one -- but I found them useful. Especially when studying, it's nice to have a succinct list.As heavy as this book is, it's a little daunting when you first pick it up. It looks a little forbidding when you crack it open. But I found the writing very personable, easy to understand, and full of "I never thought of that" moments. Good research book to keep on hand.

If this is a required text for your class then this is a moot review. If you have a choice in the matter, this is a text that has dated (most are older than 2000) small (2-4 pages)in medium text book format to medium(5-10 page) unanswered cases studies for use in an academic environment to discuss 1-2 points per case study. there are several indepth large case studies that hopefuly will cover the bulk of what your assignment requires.As the preface by the author states, many instructors require the content of papers used in the course to be more current limiting the usefulness of the text regardless of the relavance. Unfortunately two of my instructors in the MPMP program required with in 5 years releveance and as the case studies are dated in most instances I was half way through the book to find any that would meet the time requirement. In a first come first pick scholastic environment...ouch.The text does break down the case studies into a logicall grouping order by Project Management sub categories such as scheduling, risk ,resources etc. this has some use as a student looking for a case study by those categoriesIn the intent of the author the book does what it is designed to do but for someone who is an acknowleded expert in Project Management field and has numerous other books referenced heavily it would be wonderful if it were brought more up to date.

Good book and very informative for the subject matter. I wish the book included more context, better real world examples, and less a regurgitation of the PMBOK guide. I typically enjoy utilizing the kindle for learning but dislike how this kindle edition is set up. It is not set up the same with page numbers and such so it is hard to quote using the APA format and it is not easy to navigate for easy reference. These factors make it difficult to use the kindle version in a class setting.

I have always loved Ms. Rivers' writing. There was something different about this novel. The prayers from the characters throughout the chapters became my own. I, too, come from a blemished past. At times, I experience anger from the residue of my past decisions, choices, actions, guilt, regret. As a Christian woman, in my own personal hell that I went through, God revealed things to me that I needed to lay at His feet and learn to forgive myself because He forgave me. Ms. Rivers' has writing down to an art form that you can't walk away from without being changed. For the modern day Believer, Unbeliever, those set free and those still bound, there's Hope. It matters not what you've done. He is reaching for you to come out! If He saved me from my past, He can save you too. This was a refreshing novel that many can relate to through any of the characters. Which one are you?

This is one of the best books I have read in a long time (and I read about two book a week). The characters are well-developed. The storyline is realistic and not predictable. There were things that I hadn't figured out until the end. There is a wide range of characters - each with their own purpose. The Christian aspect of the book is well-balanced and not preachy. It is neither too light nor heavy handed, but it is realistic and powerful. If you haven't read a good book in a long time, this is the one.

This is Mrs. Rivers' best work - a true Masterpiece. I could not put it down. Rivers is a gifted writer that tells storied in such a way as to allow the reader to know each character. The base story is of two people with devastating childhoods finding God's perfect plans for their lives, and how they affected each other in unbelievable ways. Other characters in the story also have interesting things happen as a result of their choices. The story shows how the evil one actively pursues people - especially people made vulnerable by human choices - and The Way to repulse him. Everyone who reads this book will clearly see how to have ultimate, lasting fulfillment and purpose in their life.

WOW another fantastic read from Francine Rivers! I could not put it down. So all my chores got done today (weds) after getting the book Saturday at 8 pm. Well, I did have things I had to do in between, like work. Anyway, this story is fresh, romantic, spiritual, and convicting. What more can you ask for? Another book from Francine Rivers like this, that’s what! I can’t get enough. I laughed, I cried, I treated people better, I loved Jesus more, I absolutely love filling my head with this kind of past time reading. I also related to some the malfunction within family dynamics that was portrayed. What is the best answer there? Forgive and move on. So did Grace. Love.

Francine Rivers has insight into real-life issues and makes no apology for writing about them in the raw. There is no attempt to frilly them up or become too religious and not face the harsh and often brutal challenges experienced by many in this fallen world. What I love about her novels is that they have substance, show the way of salvation and give hope, while she masterfully and cleverly creates a story line that makes her work one that you don’t want to put down. This was a meaningful read!

I pre ordered the book and it arrived the same day it was released. I could not put this book down! We know how the book ultimately end. The last 200 pages relate to me and so many other people I know. We are fighting our battles and come from different backgrounds. As Christians we all have to learn to trust Christ. It is simple but not easy- as stated in this book. In the reflective moments of the book it helps open your eyes to see where bad things have happened to you there are still blessings in the mess. There is one you can always count on, Christ our Lord!I have already recommended this book to several of my friends and will purchase more to distribute to friends as gifts.

Francine Rivers is my favorite author by far so I hate giving a bad review.A good novel overall but sadly it fell very short (while I absolutely love The Mark of the Lion Series and Redeeming Love!) All four of those books are simply phenomenal with impactful, believable characters and spirituality that draws you closer to Christ. In The Masterpiece, however, something was lacking and I felt disappointed even after finishing the book. It is slightly derivative and dry.The situations created weren’t realistic and were very predictable from the get go. Also, there was too much flipping back to Grace and Romans past ( Roman/Grace aged 7,10,15,20) which typically gave details that were already previously stated in the ‘present tense’ chapters right beforehand; so much that the facts became redundant and I honestly started skipping paragraphs because it was a repeat of what she’d already told us several times already. It became boring and tedious to read. The ink wasted would have been better spent on showing us Grace and Roman falling in love, gettting together, getting married etc. Instead, those details everyone wanted to know, were strewn on the very last pages as an afterthought in the epilogue. Even then SEVERAL questions are left unanswered and made me feel cheated.(Spoiler alert) Is Roman Samuels bio father? That was the most interesting part of the entire book then it never developed any further. And what happened to Nicole who moved in with her boss? And the landscape Roman painted with Grace hidden in the picture? And Aunt Elizabeth’s sudden change of heart? Ugh frustration.With the other Rivers books I’ve read (and re-read several times after) left me in tears and utterly moved. The masterpiece was dull, and not filled with the same spirit and complexity as the other novels. I still love Francine Rivers, but sadly this book wasn’t really worth reading and won’t be re-read again.

The aftermath of the war featured British greed, brutality and incompetence. The authors have written a chronicle worthy of the heroic Zulus.

This was a well documented and balanced account of Zulu history. There was a lot of information to cover but the authors did well at presenting it in an understandable and cohesive format.I knew nothing about the Zulus before this book other than the old movie I watched as a kid. The content was fascinating to me. I loved the common themes of power struggle, cultural identity, and strategy that you see repeated through all of history, along with the uniquely Zulu customs and societal priorities that were all new to me.The story is definitely a more tragic and frustrating one, but enlightening and important, whether you have specific ties to African history or not.

Perhaps too scholarly for the casual reader as it gets almost biblical with all the begats. Nevertheless I found it most interesting especially since it presents the Zulus in an unbiased way and exposes the ruthlessness of the Boers and the British in dealing with the indigenous population not unlike our treatment of native Americans. The conquerors usually write the histories.

The Zulu story is sad and heroic. Presented in this book the Zulus were treated unfairly by a greedy society who wanted what they had and did not want earn the right.

A terrific history of the ZULU people and their history with Great Britain. For history buff who like the 19th century a gold mine

Hard story to follow. Went to another book, which was very good , and will start this one over in near future.

Well-written and provides a greater understanding of the background of the strife with the Zulus

Excellent history of the Zulu wars for anyone interested in African history and Britain's involvement in that Continent. They did wash their spears in British Blood.

While programming puzzles and challenges are fun and necessary to an extent, there is little more satisfying to a new engineer than building something that can actually do something useful.One of the biggest hurdles new programmers face is not knowing where to go or what to build after their introductions. Even more so, they do not know necessarily how to apply their new skills. For those more interested in day-to-day applications than building games, this is an amazing place to learn by building with python. I would recommend this for any new programmers, and even those who are interested in exploring what they can build with their foundation.

I'm an electrical engineer who programs a lot both at my job and at home. My non-programmer sister wants to learn how to code and I was interested in learning Python both for work and hobbies, so I picked this up to teach myself and evaluate as a gift for her. Needless to say, I'm pretty satisfied with it and I expect that my sister will be too.Python is a fantastic language for beginning programmers and Sweigart does a great job of explaining it. The only beef I had with it is that some of the humor in the book may interfere with comprehension. Humor is great to keep readers engaged and help prevent them from stressing out about stuff that can be intimidating, but there are a few times here where I felt the quality of explanation suffered a little to squeeze in a joke or geek-culture reference. Note that my complaint is minor enough to not warrant taking a star off of the rating.The book's focus on automation in the second half is fantastic. Most other programming books that I have used are no where near as pragmatic and it's great to be able to apply your new knowledge to your own life immediately. I also recommend this book to anyone who has a boring job sitting in front of a computer all day. Learn to automate your tasks and do a month of work in a day.

It is a decent enough book, but a surprising amount of the python code is outdated and functions have been replaced by the developers of python, pyxl and other python modules referenced in this book. It would be nice to see some updates.Ignoring outdated modules in the examples, the author does a great job of explaining why python is important and gives so many ideas on how computing tasks can be greatly simplified, by accessing API's from software (like MS Office) that we use all of the time. This information provides an excellent foundation into python and the automation of tasks that make python such a powerhouse.Overall, this is good book; the foundation is great, while the examples are below average due to the outdated functions used in the examples.

I had years of experience in other languages, but was a total beginner in Python. I got the 5th edition of Mark Lutz's Learning Python. All 1500 pages of it. That was a mistake. It may be a useful reference book, but it was not aimed at beginners. Sweigart's book had me soon downloading stock, option and precious metal prices, remotely controlling the heating and air-conditioning in my workshop and other useful things. It sure helped me get started.

1/5 of the way into the book and I can honestly say that this is my favorite approach to learning python thus far.I have been a SA/Engineer for 9+ years and decided to move off of scripting in perl and bash and learn some python...This is a beginner book, but having some knowledge of scripting/programming would allow you to progress through the book much quicker

I enjoyed this account of Spartacus. It was fast moving and had many action/battle scenes. My background of the Spartacus story orginally was the 1960's movie and more recently the Starz, production which is a series. My only complaint was that I was expecting some arena gladiator fighting which was not included in this version. The author touched on this in his notes at the end. In any case I would recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys historical fiction from the ancient Roman era.

Novels about Spartacus seem to have become popular again, probably because of the recent TV series. Spartacus the gladiator is one of the good ones but it probably falls just short of "The Parthian", another recent read. This book certainly has a more gritty Spartacus than the legendary Howard Fast novel but is let down by occasional weak dialogue.Not a great deal is known about Spartacus as the Roman authors don't devote a lot of time to him, presumably because he was an embarrassment to Rome. Some of the Roman sources contradict each other too. It is generally thought that Spartacus must have served time in the Roman army because of his obvious tactical skill and the book opens with him returning from the army to his village in Thrace. Here he falls foul of the Thracian king and is sold into slavery as a gladiator along with his wife, the Dionysus priestess Ariadne who has married him to escape the attentions of the Thracian king. Eventually they arrive at the Lentulus Batiatus gladiator school in Capua which is a hot bed of factions and Spartacus rapidly becomes leader of one of the main groups. The other factions are the Gauls and Germans, the main Gallic group being led by Crixus, a thoroughly nasty piece of work who although he joins up with Spartacus for the break out from the gladiator school, is a constant source of trouble for the slave revolt. The breakout from the school is realistically portrayed and the book follows the revolt until the battle of Mutina. Obviously a second book is on the way.The characterization is generally good with Spartacus a believable leader who does, however, have some inner demons. Fictional characters, such as the disinherited Roman Carbo, are also dealt with well. The author takes the view that a lot of the slaves were just in the rebellion for plunder and Crixus is one of these. This is certainly not the virtuous slave army portrayed in the 1960 Kirk Douglas film. The historical accuracy seems to be spot on with a lot of detail about Crassus and his political dealings with Pompey.I'm giving this 4 stars only because some of the dialogue came across as pretty wooden, particularly in the romantic scenes but Spartacus the Gladiator is still a very good read and I look forward to the next book.

I'm posting the same review for SPARTACUS: THE GLADIATOR and SPARTACUS: REBELLION because I can't imagine reading one and not the other. It's one story and it's a brilliant one.Mr Kane mentions in the Afterword how deeply the story of Spartacus touched him. It's an enduring legend because anyone can relate to the courage of one man against impossible odds. His legend has also endured due to the fine work of writers like Howard Fast and Ben Kane. I read somewhere the best writers don't write in ink, they write with blood. There's so much heart in these books, I can see Mr Kane's devotion to the legend on every page.The final battle is one of the most thrilling accounts of what it would be like to stand in a shield wall against the odds with trusted friends all around you I've ever read. I can only compare it to BCornwell's account of Waterloo or DJackson's wonderful depiction of Claudius' victory in Britain. Mr Kane mentions reenactors in his afterword, but it's not hard to imagine in another life he stood on an ancient battlefield swapping sword blows. His writing has that level of authenticity.I could go on, but I need to get stuck into another of Mr Kane's books right away! Kudos to Ben Kane for an excellent book. I had just watched viewing "Spartacus: War of the Damned" and just needed to know more about the real history. Before moving to the history books I saw these books, noted the good reviews and decided to give Ben Kane a try. I stand humbled. I'm a historian by training and I must acknowledge that he has done an amazíng job meshing the scant historical references with an absolutely compulsive narrative. The historical details are simply excellent and the notes of the author really great. Spartacus comes to life in these pages and you can follow the story as it likely happened.Carbo is a great character that allows Kane to view the roman side of the story. I was a great fan of the undefeated gaul portrayed brilliantly by Manu Bennett in the TV series, but I'm afraid Kane's Crixus is closer to the brutal truth. The character of Ariadne is also a major difference with the TV series, but it segways beautifully with the thracian origin of the hero and his prophetic calling.Absolutely recommended. Next thing after finishing this review is downloading the next volume and most likely the rest of Kane's novels. By carefully treading between painstaking historical reconstruction and enticing narrative he has gained a reader.

I've always been fascinated by the story of Spartacus since I first saw the movie starring Kirk Douglas and have had it on my "to do list" for some time. I recently bought Ben Kane's two book series on Spartacus and have finished the first book and am totally engrossed with the second book of the series. Spartacus was an incredible human being and his story is accurately and vividly brought to life through Ben Kane's works. I very highly recommend this series to anyone who is interested in a great historical adventure that is hard to put down. I look forward to reading Ben Kane's other works as well.
