I've read "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" several times now (I've also taken the "Seven Habits" management course), and the book's powerful message never ceases to have a positive effect on nearly every aspect of my life.This is a book about organizational excellence, but with a key difference than most others on the same subject: Covey believes that the foundation of organizational excellence is personal excellence. The seven habits he describes in great detail are tools leading to that goal. They can be applied in nearly every situation in our lives, and, if successfully practiced, will help us to improve our lives at home, work and play. A word of caution, though: the book may not be for everybody; you have to be willing to face yourself honestly and courageously, and apply the seven habits daily, in order to become more effective.For the most part, "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" is well written. Covey tends to "sermonize" in places, and his writing style is at times long-winded and a bit patronizing (a flaw common to many writers of management books who think of theirs as the "best way"). However, despite its stylistic shortcomings, the book's message is powerful and profound...for those who have the courage to accept it and put it into practice.

I finally decided to read The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. I had purchased it some time ago and recently determined that now was the time to read this self-help classic. What a COLOSSAL disappointment! I am amazed that this mediocrity is so popular. I found it to be little more than 1980s managerial balloon juice.From “paradigm shift,” to “think Win/Win,” to (ugh) “synergy,” there is no empty self-help cliché left unturned. I should have stopped reading the first time I saw the word “synergy.” (I get countless “business proposals” in my email every day and, if I bother to skim any of them at all, I delete them as soon as the word “synergy” makes an appearance.) No word represents the trite emptiness of this book better than “synergy” – except maybe the verb form of the word: “synergize,” or the adjective “synergistic,” or the adverb “synergistically.” But they are all here. (The author also repeatedly refers to “things that are learned” as “learnings.”)The book doesn’t even try to live up to its title. There is no argument at all to support the idea that these are seven actual habits that real people have used anywhere in the world to achieve real success. In fact, these seven so-called habits appear to be nothing more than seven things that the author thinks are really good ideas, with weird examples of how they helped him deal with his kid being bad at baseball and also helped his kid learn the value of cleaning up the yard. The book’s title doesn’t match the book itself, but then no one would spend their money on a book called, “The Seven Things Some Random Guy Thinks are Really Nifty-Keen.”Here’s some useful self-help/time management advice for you: do not waste your precious time with this book. There are dozens and dozens, if not hundreds, of better self-help books out there. Synergize your win/win paradigm shifts with some of those.

I rarely if ever leave reviews on purchases, but I felt the need to share this one. I've spent the past several years trying to figure out what I was doing wrong when it came to happiness. I had every reason to be happy, but yet felt this deep hollowness inside. I've tried all the positive thinking quick fixes, meditation, law of attraction, etc. Nothing seemed to click or "cure" this aching inside. It wasn't until I read the 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People, that the fog finally lifted. This book taught me why all those quick fixes don't work and how my happiness depended on my own internal work and efforts. I encourage anyone who is struggle with a similar situation or everyone for that matter to read this book. It'll change your perspective on life!

This is, hands down, one of the best and most powerful books I've ever read in my life. I have recommended it to countless people. The fact that you're seeking it out says volumes about your level of self-awareness as it is and this book builds on that. Very seldom do books really make me get involved when I read them, but this book made me break out my highlighter and notepad. There was so much good stuff I just had to take notes I could quickly reference. You know how some books make you say things out loud? You'll read something and say, "YES! EXACTLY!" or read something profound and just sit dumbfounded, going "Wow," and you have to take a moment to reflect on it? This book is full of moments like that.There is a lot of practical stuff in here, too. Challenges for you. Ways you can start to shift your thinking by taking an emotional inventory of your life and what you're doing/feeling every day. Just writing about it makes me want to go back and read it again. If you're here looking for a book that will help you harness that little spark inside of you that's saying, "You can be better" then this book is it. You're not an animal. Life doesn't condition you like a dog. This book is about the untouchable part of your human spirit that no one besides you controls. This book is about carrying sunny weather with you where ever you go, learning how much a proactive attitude benefits you, and really how sad and wasteful it is to walk through life allowing things to ruin your day. Things don't ruin your day. YOU ruin your day. You are always in control.Seriously, read this book. You won't regret it.

If you don't cry a few times while reading this book, check your pulse. This is the 2nd of her books I've read. I'm captivated by her mission and the good she does rehabilitating both horses and broken people. My only criticism of the book is that her writing style is a little too "creative" and flowery -- sometimes I have to re-re-reread a paragraph or even a page to figure out what she's saying, and sometimes I just skip that section. I prefer straightforward writing.

These stories touched my heart. I already help support a horse rescue here in southern Arizona. I've never ridden a horse or owned one. It just seems the thing to do. Help these horses I mean. Thank for writing this wonderful book.

Love, love, love this book. To paraphase a song, I want more of this! This book is so inspiring, so heart tearing at times. But, it's also real life and the problems and joys that come with it. It's an encouragement to listen for God's voice in our lives. It's also a reminder that each of us can help another in their struggles. Another book, please Kim!

This collection of stories about how horses and humans can interact will touch the most hard-hearted among us. Not only do the stories relate the astounding human/ horse miracles that can take place, they also follow the author's walk of faith, doing the very things God has called her to do, putting everything on the line at times. For anyone who loves horses, or even those who don't, this book will inspire readers to look differently at animals in general and wonder what further things they can tell us. Reverence for all life should follow. Highly recommended.

So this book is several things.One, it is a book of theology of the kingdom of the Messiah. Dr. Hart lays out the plans of God through Jesus Christ in instituting his kingdom, which is topsy-turvy: it is not power-based, it is not authority-based, it is not self-based. It is, instead, based upon love and community, honesty and commitment, risk and sacrifice and the great great reward of connection with Jesus. For that alone, you should read this book.It is also a book about America, plainly stated, as it was, and is, and perhaps may not always be. It is a book about how we Christians have acquired a worldview of the church and society, of God and Jesus, that matches with our own estimation of the normalcy of "whiteness." There are books which will give you much more detail about the American past, creating the concept of "whiteness" and "blackness" in order to justify power and ownership of one person over another. There are books which will give you more details about how these all worked out in society, from redlining to education to family stability to job access, even to the point of membership and participation in the church. The thesis is that we American Christians have re-created the Jesus of Scripture to be a slightly more beneficent-appearing Uncle Sam, a Jesus committed to the supremacy of America, along with its violence and authority and rulership. The Jesus of the America church, he argues, represents a Jesus we have created in our image so that we may receive approval for our actions in his name. It is not a Jesus that represents humility and service and sacrifice, but one that represents anger and exclusion and hostility to anyone who might threaten the power of America or the church--which are often confused as being the same thing.It is also a book about wounding and healing, about the many, many millions of people who have been wounded by American, Christian values, and even in their wounding have been overlooked and dismissed. It is a book that opens up the Book; it talks about the real Kingdom and the real Jesus and how He cannot be used by anyone to advance a political or religious objective; indeed, it appears that Jesus has his own agenda and purposes, and they are not necessarily being implemented in the American church. Dr. Hart makes the argument that Christians, representing Jesus, *should* be at the forefront, all along, of restoration and healing. He provides many examples of the wounding, and provides many ideas for the healing that we, as Christians, can begin implementing.And finally, it is a book of redemptive love. It is Jesus, after all, who has loved us and saved us, such squabbling nuisances, such angry elves, such short-sighted and individualistic believers, such unloveable and unloved humans. Above all the message of Dr. Hart is the reminder that Jesus is worth knowing and loving and serving, that Jesus is in the business of restoration and healing, that Jesus is calling us all, right now, to participate in his kingdom, that Jesus' love is not limited by his need for power and authority, that people are always, ALWAYS more important than success or fame or accomplishment.There are many great stories in this book. A few spoke to me more than others. One is his story (also told elsewhere) of the meeting of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Franklin Fisher. It pulled together the life of Bonhoeffer for me--I knew he made a great sacrifice during WWII, but did not understand how he had come to be the person who could walk out his life that way. The other is the story of a women in contemporary American, a white woman, who found herself in a situation she was unprepared to handle regarding an honest, open discussion of racial actions and reactions in the American church. She was unable to handle her emotional reactions (it's not an uncommon thing), and was honest enough to admit her anxieties. The response of Dr. Hart was perfect, meeting her at her level, actively listening, helping her stay on her journey--and yet not dismissing the importance of broaching the topic of racism just because it makes a lot of us uncomfortable.That is the kind of discussions and interactions we need to have. Dr. Hart helpfully provides some mechanisms and actions we can take in response to his message, which are great tools.It is a full, rich, complete book. It is challenging and hopeful and honest. It is a message of truth that can appear to be brutal because it is not softened by an attempt to be "liked."But it is a book worth reading and thinking about.

Jesus and his life and teachings are front and center. I will need to re-read to capture the layers. And buy a few more copies to share with friends.

Troubles I Have Seen is a needed book in regards to dealing with racism in the church. This book takes a hard, grim look on racism today. I’ll be honest, this book isn’t for the faint of heart. You may not agree with everything said, but you’ll benefit greatly from reading this.In nine chapters he speaks of how sin has fleshed itself out in racism, white supremacy, and anti-black ideology, not just in America but in the church. And through it shows how to subvert these realities in the church.He goes back to the beginning of American history showing how from this country’s birth till now, white supremacy has infiltrated everything, even down to our theology. Even more, he shows how majority culture, even the church, has been blind to the mistreatment of people of color. And if we were honest, the white church today at large misses the full extent of how black folks are oppressed today. And the only way to see is to enter into the pain as Jesus did.I must highlight chapter 3 and chapter 9. It may not have been his intent, but chapter 3 reminded me how important it is to keep Jesus in his historical context. His re-telling of Jesus’ story put steel in my spine as I re-discovered a Savior who can identify with people of color today. Often the gospel is simplified down to justification ripping Jesus from the world he lived in. Drew shows how in Jesus, God is uniquely at work amongst the poor, marginalized, and unwanted and the way to serve is amongst them in humility.Chapter 9 gives 7 practices that will help communities deconstruct the white supremacy, racial hierarchy, and racial prejudice we’ve inherited. May Jesus give us the courage for the days ahead.I wish I could give more, every chapter is necessary but you’ll have to get the book.

I bought this book so my 8 year old daughter could read about Beethoven as she started playing some of his music. There is a lot of content in the book and it was easy to read. The problem is that there are a LOT of typos and grammatical errors in the book. I mean a LOT!! My favorite was "Being dead did not stop him in the slightest from recovering quickly and going on with his music." I am pretty sure they meant being "deaf", not "dead", otherwise it's a miracle. The book is full of things like this or missing words. I do not believe it was edited before print. I did give it 3 stars because it had content. I take pride in providing honest reviews because I personally use reviews for most of the items I buy. Please rate this review as helpful if it provided any information that allowed you to make your decision to buy this product or not.

This book was not edited at all! There are typos, missing words, and many incorrect words. I am a teacher and bought this book for a student to do research to write a biography. This is not the type of book I would share with a student. I was able to interpret the meaning but a young reader would struggle with it. Especially when Beethoven's name was substituted with Bach! If you are looking for a child friendly biography on Beethoven, try Getting to Know the World's Greatest Composers.

It was a good biography but needs proofreading: “The teachers had still been essential to Beethoven’s, however. Without them Bach might not have published his first piece of music at the age of twelve.” Also, Beethoven was a zombie: “Being dead did not stop him in the slightest...”

This little paperback is a lot smaller than expected and riddled with typos...shame on the editor, if there was one. Otherwise, the book is fun to read.

I started reading the book before I gave it to my son to read and was very disappointed with the spelling and grammar errors. I didn't even finish reading the first chapter because the constant errors.

I am an adult and I love it. Searching for classical music appreciation for preschooler. This one is more for school kids but I love reading it so much I have to give it a review. It does helps me to understand more why Beethoven is great. Most of adult don't understand it either. The fact this is written in easy words for children makes it easy to fallow. Every parents should read this book.

My plan was to give this gift to a child. When it arrived I read the first few pages just to make sure I was giving a well written book. I was extremely disappointed. The facts may be accurate but the English language (syntax) is poor. I do recommend the "Who Was" series of biographies instead. They offer "Who was Mozart," and many other choices.

Since we drive, we rely on this book to provide information on the smaller cities and those that intersect with major highways for lodging and eating. Greatly lacking in this area. Some tourists sights mentioned in the book cannot be found with the directions provided. In reading various cities the author mentions that some sight should not be missed but the site is not mentioned in the summary at the beginning of each section. Some more important placement of local customs would be helpful rather than a list lost in the back of the book.As to menu and lodging and language problems, the book is not much help. Of all the 50+ countries I have traveled, this was the most difficult for language than any other and the book was not much help as with other editions for other countries.

all the spots were fantastic in the book. i was so happy with my trip that was more or less based solely on the suggestions of lonely planet. the historical context and cultural context in the book truly made the trip so much more meaningful. the only thing to note is the MRT has developed since its publish- not a problem to pick up a new map at the station or online at one of taipei's free wifi spots. thanks lonely planet!!!!

I normally love Lonely Planet, but the digital edition was decidedly less appealing than the print edition. It didn't have any real design layout, so it was harder than usual to read. I also felt, perhaps unjustly, that it didn't have as much info. I never found the history section. I'll buy Lonely Planet again, but only in print.

Good, but most of the places that they mention in the book are major tourist places. Hence, they charge an arm and a leg. But the book is well written and great if you are visiting Taiwan for the first time.

Fairly good guide. For some reason the 2014 edition has an old subway map for the overall system but the individual section maps of Taipei were updated. Good spread of expat and local establishments.

You must supplement this with at least a Michelin guide. I had the previous LP edition, not for kindle, and I thought that was much better than this new kindle version.
