Rhea Combs is a curator at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African American History and Culture and head of the museum’s Earl W. and Amanda Stafford Center for African American Media Arts. Combs has written several articles on gender, sexuality, and African American visual culture as well as curated shows at museums both nationally and internationally, including: ICA-London, Spelman College and the Schomburg Center for Black Culture. Beautiful and poingant photographs by African American and other photographers (selected from the large and growing photography collection of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture), accompanied by three short, insightful essays, reveal the rich and significant contributions African Americans have made to to our great American heritage.

This is a beautiful book with fantastic photography from a bygone era. Everyone grabs it from my coffee table and thoroughly enjoys leafing through the fabulous photos.

The content appears to be good but it's inadequate as far as size. The print and pictures are difficult for this senior's eyes. I would have paid more to have a more sizable book maybe with additional content. Just a major disappointment. For those of us who can't get to the new museum a handsome coffee table book would be just what we need.

I wanted a larger, hard cover version of this book.

Maddy is now all grown up and teaches third grade at the K-12 school, and did I mention she and Eric are no longer dating? Doesn’t that open up all kinds of delicious possibilities.Miller's books are just so darn fun to read, and with each new book, I think, “This is his best book,” because he continues to grow in his craft while still showcasing a terrific sense of humor. I adored Peyton and Maddy and was cheering for them throughout, easily devouring their story in one sitting. Of course, I wanted to shake them both a time or two, but what's a romance without a little conflict? I love when characters are realistically complex because peeling back the layers makes a stronger connection with the reader. Peyton acts all cocky and arrogant, seeming to never take anything seriously, but it's the little boy with the tough upbringing and the gigantic heart beneath it all that won me over. Maddy has lived her life being good, nice and agreeable, and it was delightful to see a carefree but strong person emerge and go after what she wanted.I loved seeing Miller show a deeper side with the parallel between Maddy and Payton’s grandmother which finally helped Maddy fully understand the cost of “settling for.” That's actually a great lesson for all of us. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Miller novel without sexy times, and the chemistry between Peyton and Maddy was explosive, with just the right amount of tension and teasing, and a little bit of taboo added in. This one is fun and flirty, humorous and hot, messy at times but with a poignant tenderness that hits all the right notes, and you're definitely going to want to start reading it right away!*I reviewed an advance copy of this book freely and voluntarily, having made no commitment to provide a review and receiving no compensation of any kind from any source for this review.

First off I don't mind Dallas. They're kinda in my neutral zone (football fans would get that). But I absolutely hate the Patriots. In the beginning, it was written that Dallas beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl. Hallelujah! Some team other than the Patriots won. In this instance...I love Dallas! I'm actually writing this as I watch the Rams play the Saints. And after that, I'm watching the Chiefs play the Patriots (go Chiefs!!!). I love football. It's my second favorite sport (baseball is my first). I love watching sports. So this book was a bit up my alley. The book's main focus isn't football, that part is secondary. But it's well played out. There's enough to say it's football themed but not enough to take over.I liked Peyton and Mandy together. They had great chemistry. They had their faults. As well as strengths. This book was well thought out and the details were spot on. It got a little "dry" in the middle but I pushed through (hence the 4 Star rating). The part were Peyton gave Benjii (3rd grader) a job, I completely lost it. It was the most uplifting and thoughtful scene. I was so glad it was written in. It made this book extra special. There is a meaning by it and I won't ruin the experience by disclosing a spoiler. But just know it was special. It was enough to bring tears to my eyes.I really liked this book. It was definitely an eye opener. It was well written. I would recommend this book.

Another awesome read by Mickey Miller. Peyton returns to his home town to be the substitute teacher & high school football coach whilst pro football is on strike & runs into his former neighbor Maddy. They haven’t seen each other for sometime since Peyton left to play pro football whilst Maddy stayed in their home town with her high school sweetheart. Now that Maddy has broken up can Peyton full the gap? It’s a great read full of passion, banter & chemistry. A def one click you won’t be disappointed.

It's poorly written and has several errors in it. Not sure if I am a fan of the story. The female lead just seemed a bit annoying to me. It was difficult to like her character.

This friends to lovers sports romance story is one of those books that will grab you at the cover and hold you hostage until the very end. There's plenty of angst, witty banter, sizzling chemistry, push and pull, passion, and steamy scenes in this sexy as hell story.I volunteered to review an advance reader copy of this book.

I loved this book! I've been reading Mickey's books for years, and I've never been disappointed. This book was no exception. The characters were well developed, the story kept me reading, and I would recommend it to others! I personally love the "boy next door" or "girl next door" stories, and their past together really added an extra level to this story. I wish we had been given more from Peyton's perspective. I was always anxious to know what he was thinking through all that happened, especially in the beginning.

I am new to reading this author and have fallen in love with his work. So excited to read more by this author. This a beautiful story about a lady who finds the courage to be who she is and love the way she wants with a cocky and alpha male who turns out to be a giving and loving soul. Also how a child is helped to realize his own self importance after suffering a tragedy. This is a story that made me so happy and has a wonderful HEA.

Loved this book! Maddy and Peyton are perfect together. They are deep well developed characters that are easy to relate to. Their childhood friendship blooming into a steamy secret romance was wonderful. I enjoyed the humor and teasing interactions between the 2 as well as the teaching/ coaching aspect of the story. Miller has done it again, don't miss this read!

Trish Burr IS needle painting. The Milner Craft Series is such a wonderful source of truly superior stitching books and this is a shining example. The covers of her books look like paintings and we just can't "picture" (excuse the pun) ourselves stitching threads onto fiber and successfully accomplishing that look. But Milner books are famous for gently pulling you step by step to make a masterpiece. You just have to want to do it and be brave enough to try something new.With my walls covered with stitch pictures, I'm trying to go small. Having a collection of little projects prettily displayed is very inviting. I've been using high count linen, aida and even silk gauze to make cross stitch and specialty stitch pictures smaller than the project calls for. And I'm stepping into designing my own pieces.If nothing else, this book is great to peruse even if you never pick up a needle to employ its projects. It is very inspiring just to do any stitching you're comfortable with.Buy it. You won't be disappointed.

I just received my book and I can't wait to start a project. But which one? They are all beautiful! Oh! I know: miniature needle painting embroidery, I am going to be able to do all of them!!! Excellent book. Detail information about each project and very good pictures. One of them is a Portrait, so pretty. I've been always curious about portraits but I think they're difficult, with this tutoring I should be good. You will find georgeous birds, flowers, little girls and the one that makes me wonder for a moment, the bird nest. Look so real. What make this book stand out from others? I will say again, detail on pictures and detail instructions. I am done with my review, need to do my shopping list since Hobby Lobby has DMC 30% off this week.

Trish Burr is absolutely brilliant in her needle painting in this particular book as well as her other books and DVD's. Fun projects with excellent illustrations and photographs. Well written step by step instructions match perfectly with the photographs. Ms. Burr is very upbeat and writes a book that you feel that "Yes! I can do this!". Of course, its fun to find the vintage look for the children, the birds are really cute but the flowers are incredible. Its wonderful to find these smaller projects to try and learn Ms. Burr's techniques.

You will see elsewhere that I've written positive reviews on all of Ms. Burr's books after purchasing some of her embroidery kits on etsy. My Mother was frustrated with the quality and content of some of the kits and books we had purchased for her on embroidery hobby but Ms. Burr's work takes the craft to an entirely different level. Any one of her books is a must read for anyone doing needlework/embroidery and her needle painting is just stunning. But, her original designs are really the star of these books.

Trish Burr does it again! Wonderful embroidery projects to create yourself. She has plenty of clear photographs and diagrams outlining her process of thread painting. She tries to make beautiful embroidery more affordable more using easy to obtain materials such as DMC embroidery floss, embroidery hoops, and fine cotton fabrics. If you are interested in improving your stitching skills or starting them, Trish Burr's books are a great source.

I was not as happy with this book, it is okay but not my favorite. It is not a contributor of new techniques as I had wished. I was hoping that Trish Burr would share her process of creating the miniature dimensional pieces she is known for. This book is a recount of Color Confidence but the projects are just smaller.

I really loved this book. The embroidered items look like they could be painted. I am going to use this book to do many of the items in the book. I hope I can make them as pretty as Trish does, with lots of practice and time.

Beautiful beautiful beautiful....if you paint, draw, embroider, or just want to have a good color study for thread and light play at your fingertips, then this book is for you. I have two of her books, they are lovely.

Everything by Trish Burr is amazing. If you enjoy handwork you need to get this book. All patterns are large, showing detail. Tread is listed with color and number for you to purchase. Fantastic detail. The projects on the jacket are in the book, and more.

This well-written and interesting book will open your eyes to the computer security risks we all face. Simply put, our banks, retailers, public agencies, power grid, and other essential organizations are more vulnerable than I realized. This is the theme underlying the story of "Alien," a young woman who graduates from MIT, and becomes a high level computer security professional ("White Hat Hacker"), eventually starting her own firm. Since some reviewers seem to question the accuracy of this story, it now known that Alien is indeed a real person: Sherri Davidoff, who has given several recent public interviews, and owns/manages a successful computer security company based in Montana.The first part of the book describes Alien's college years at MIT, where she tries to cope with the pressure cooker atmosphere. She becomes interested in computer science, and discovers her talents in this field. After she graduates, the book becomes much more interesting, as Alien works at a top-secret government job, and then for a cybersecurity firm. For me the highlight of the book involves the actual hacking examples. The author takes the reader behind the scenes to observe how Alien conducted "Red Team" attacks (usually successful) on her clients, including large corporations and public agencies Her team used computer hacking, phishing e-mails, and social engineering to penetrate layers of security protecting sensitive data. The relative ease with which they did this is astonishing and frightening. Often the low-tech attacks were effective and fascinating. In one case, Alien borrows an idea from a Hollywood heist movie to get into the executive offices of a company in daytime without being questioned or searched.I also like how Alien's story illustrates (without being preachy) how a woman overcomes sexual discrimination (both subtle and overt) to succeed in a male-dominated field. The last part of the book describes how she starts and grows her own business, while using her hacker skills to educate and protect her clients from growing security threats. As a personal comment I'm surprised at the sexist comments from some other reviewers concerning her professional success. My only criticisms of this book are that the section on Alien's college years was too long, and I wanted to hear sometimes directly from Alien herself, instead of always through the author. As a final thought, my vote goes to Lily Collins to play the lead role in the movie...

I came to MIT the year after Alien and lived in the same dorm on a different hall. While I didn't know Alien personally, I knew of her, and I remember many of the events and mindsets in the first parts of this book vividly. It's always fascinating to hear where life takes my fellow MIT alumni and how the experience changes and shapes you. This book was absolutely riveting from cover to cover. I inhaled it on a 9hour flight to Frankfurt. I highly recommend it for a true story of a brilliant person finding herself and changing the world.

I liked that this book covered Alien's time at MIT, and it was believable, not varnished over. It talked about adderal & acid, and friends who pushed too far. It was a coming of age story that's rarely told but well told. I liked that it described the Los Alamos work environment and later how she tired of working for other people and started her own business. The book has a little Linux and Unix, but not a lot of Windows techie language. It's enough to give it flavor. There's a lot to like if you want to sample the field. It shows discrimination is similar for women in information technology as well as all fields and how Alien dealt with it. I would have given it five stars except I'm picky about words. Sometimes descriptions of men in Alien's life played on the surface though I doubt many readers will notice.

I originally bought this book under the misunderstanding that it was a fictitious thriller involving a female protagonist hacker called Alien. However, it is more biographical in nature, cataloging Alien's anecdotes and life events. I was open to the biographical style, but personally felt like the book was poorly written on a number of levels. As a female reader, I often found myself rolling my eyes at the author's attempt at relaying Alien's female perspective, which was a thinly veiled male fantasy of the Sexy Cool Tech Girl archetype. As a reader who works in the technology industry, I was underwhelmed with the very short anecdotes of Alien's hacking and penetration-testing. Almost all of these anecdotes were stories of triumph with little to no conflict-- I felt like I was reading a book about a Hacker SuperWoman, which is a cool idea for a graphic novel, but even then the conflict would need to be dialed up a few notches. When any type of conflict would actually occur in the book, the writer would simply move on to the next chapter or neglect the resolution of that conflict. These writing flaws result in surface level characters who feel disingenuous to the reader, consistently predictable hacking executions, and bored, dissatisfied readers.
