When Pointe ended, and Ms. Colbert's voice stopped, I was suddenly aware of how intensely I was breathing. Pointe is a powerful, evocative story of love, and trust, and betrayal. I had originally gotten it because of the ballet theme but it is so much more than that.Ms. Colbert's writing perfectly captured the search for someone who only looks that way at you, who thinks that only you're special, and who thinks that the sun and the moon rise in your eyes alone; the wonder when a lover gently takes and caresses your ugliest feature instead of being repulsed (for a ballet dancer, our beaten up feet that are at the heart of and our sacrifice to our art); the difficulty of being one of only a handful of people who are different in a town that is not like you; the fear that you will not be good enough to be able to do what you're most passionate about; and the fear that your family and friends will hate you for something that was done to you, It is a story of Theo, a 17-year-old ballet dancer who struggles with an eating disorder, with betrayal, with growing up and finding her place in the world.Pointe is an intense book. It can be triggering for people who have eating disorders, have been sexually abused, have PTSD, or have depression. Some will say it is too grown up for teenagers. The issues Theo faces are the same issues that I see teenagers in our high school face every day.Ms. Colbert explores these issues in a sensitive way that never seemed exploitative or sensationalized.Ms. Colbert is an outstanding writer and I look forward to reading anything that she writes. That's not a comment I make lightly and only for a very small handful of authors.Brava!

There are so many details, small little subtle turns of phrase, that make this such a well written story.I'm a WOC in my 30s, and there were so many memories the author mentioned that reminded me of growing up. The uncomfortable Civil War discussions at school, wearing a wrap to bed, how some guys at kind of objectify you because to them you're "exotic" because there's zero diversity in your school. The subtle descriptions made the story jump off of the page, and formed vivid characters, settings, and emotions. This story exceeded my expectations, and I don't want to say too much that might give away anything. But if you like mysteries, psychological thrillers, or coming of age stories- this is the one for you. Hands down, it's the best story I've read this year. It'll be yours too.

Grade: A-POINTE was not the book I expected, after perusing the blurb. It was so much less and so much more.Seventeen-year-old Theo dreams of a future career as a prima ballerina, a rarity for black girls. The last to talk to her best friend Donovan before he disappeared four years ago, she's all but given up hope of seeing him alive. But now he's back and not talking. To anyone. And she knows his alleged kidnapper, more well than anyone could imagine. She knew him as Trent, her eighteen year old secret boyfriend. Now Theo knows his real name I'd Chris and he's really thirty-years-old. And Donovan was found with him two-thousand miles away. But Donovan wasn't kept tied up in a basement. He could have gotten away. Maybe he ran away to be with Trent/Chris. Maybe Chris was cheating on her with Donovan. Now Theo is being asked to testify against her ex-boyfriend, for kidnapping her best friend and she's not sure what to do. If only she could talk to Donovan. But he's holed up in his house. Not talking to anyone.Theo has a lot of problems and more layers than most people, let alone novel characters. Brandy Colbert gives her main character so much depth, I felt like Theo was real. An ambitious dancer, competitive, but not brutally do, imperfectly recovering from anorexia, the only black girl in her dance troupe and school, convinced she's still in love with her ex "boyfriend", sometimes dishonest daughter of two loving parents, cheating secretly with a drug dealer who already has a girlfriend--Theo is dealing with more than most. Sometimes I wanted to grab her and tell her she deserved better, most times I wanted to hug her tight and tell her Trent/Chris wasn't her boyfriend, he was her rapist. I liked her, rooted for her, and understood her enough to wonder, under other circumstances if I could have been her.I expected, and kept waiting for, Theo and Donovan to reconnect and heal each other. I thought that would be the essence of the story, but POINTE was much more Theo's story than Donovan's. Her journey was much more painful than the joy of reconnection and weathering the aftermath as only best-friendscan do.The only negative of this brilliant, subtle, thought provoking novel is that there were too many minor high school friends/acquaintances for me to keep track of. I hope Colbert continues to write wonderful, deep novels and that she writes quickly, because I can't wait to see what she does next.Themes: kidnapping, friendship, dancing, anorexia recovery, dating, statutory rape, drugs, ballet, relationships, court, family, cheating

What I loved about this book is the gritty honesty of the setting. It reminded me of my teen years dealing with drugs and deadbeat boys and alcohol, whereas most YA feels so sanitized it is removed from my own experience. I also like how the author makes you see how Theo really fell for these boys, even as she slowly comes to understand they treat her badly. Her flashbacks of time with Trent/Chris felt excruciatingly real. However, there were drawbacks too--too much time spent angsting over whether to tell or not with no movement forward. And the ballet, while the detail work was great, always felt a little peripheral. Overall, it was a good read and well written, but not as addictive of a story as I was looking for.
