My German Proffesor had me read this for an assignment, and it was a BEAST to get through. The good stuff: You can see the amount of work and dedication this author put in. Occasionally, parts could be humorous, which was nice. The bad stuff: Really hard to read fluidly. There are a lack of commas to break up thoughts, which were very distracting. It’s also really boring to read if you don’t have a thorough understanding of Europe’s history and geography already.Did I enjoy reading it most of the time? No. But I have a level of respect for the author and his work, and I think to those who are more in tuned to culture and history, this would be a really good read.

This is a delightfully translated, rich and ornate, not so much travelogue as intellectual and literary history, of what Magris is pleased to term Mitteleuropa. Indeed, the reader looking for actual descriptions of the Danube will fine them few and far between, whereas the intellectual - capital I - reader will find a SmörgÃ¥sbord of poets and writers of all sorts who have dwelt along the banks of the Danube for centuries.Magris, though his prose may come across as dense at times, is actually a bon-vivant with a rather breezy, hedonistic take on life. This is fortunate, for it serves to leaven the sometimes ponderous meditations the reader comes across. This duality of text and attitude is nicely encapsulated in the first two paragraphs of the chapter entitled "Believing In Ulm".On the one hand, in the first paragraph:"But all that is real is being erased each instant, even if luckily not always in the bloodstained theatre of phosphorous bombs. Little by little, however, things are imperceptibly erased, and one cannot do otherwise than believe that they nonetheless exist."On the other hand, in the second:"We are happy in the company of people who make us feel the unquestionable presence of the world, just as the body of the beloved gives us the certainty of those shoulders, that bosom, that curve of the hips, the surge of those as incontestable as the sea."In general, there is a tendency to delve to a greater or lesser extent into the life and works of a writer or thinker, whetting the reader's appetite, and then, quite often, drolly cock a snook at said individual before moving on to a writer who dwelt further down the Danube. This is nowhere more evident than in his treatment of the Hungarian writer Georg Lukács, on whom Magris dwells for some time before jauntily quipping in the penultimate paragraph that: "From his window he could see the great Danube, but he probably had little appreciation of it, insensitive as he was to nature, which in his eyes was blemished by not having read Kant or Hegel."The result of all this? A bit of a mixed bag, I should say. As Magris says of another writer, "The result is that he says too little and too much at the same time." Be this as it may, the author is widely read and the book is quite fun to read for the intellectual traveller who doesn't mind being taken down a Danube of history and ideas, if not the actual river.

Mind-blowing erudition. Allusions to literature, philosophy, psychology, history, mythology. . . the author's range knows no bounds. Could not put this book down!

Not your typical travelogue but a voyage down the Danube through literature, history and culture by an erudite commentator. Helps to have some background in the area, or read a general history in conjunction.

Very interesting full of facts

Magris is a professor of German literature with a degree in foreign languages in the university of Torino. In 1995 Klagenfurt gave him the honorary doctoral degree. He is also a columnist of Corriere della sera. I firstly saw the blue Danube in February 2011 without never had been a dancer of waltz or of anything good. I went to Vienna where I visited the museum of natural sciences. I particularly appreciated the reconstruction of the Miller-Urey experiment of 1952. "About 3 billion and a half years ago, the atmosphere of the Earth contained ammonium, hydrogen, methane, water. By simulating lightning on these chemical elements, after a day an organic compound was formed which contained the most common 20 amino-acids, which serve to build proteins. Later with a collection technique more accurate the Singhalese Ponnamperuma discovered that also all the elements which make the DNA molecule were present. The same phenomenon which generated life on the Earth may happen in other planets (Roberto Fideli, Il metodo comparativo, cap. 1, Macerata, Simple, 2013). Maybe a cruise on the blue Danube will be wonderful for me in the future as a straight European man. This book by the German philologist Magris published in 1986 may be a guide for the independent traveller who is in touch with natural sciences. But two commentaries of mine to two captions are needed."a naturalist is unlikely to believe in the 'religion of humanity' (p. 161)."I really find that two articles of the universal declaration of human rights have a foundation in nature: the article 16, which recognizes the natural character of human family, and the article 25, which gives every consenting adult the right to heterosexual health -- behaviour which joins us to all other animals with a sexual reproduction" (Roberto Fideli, Saggi di gnoseologia, Macerata, Simple, 2014, 129-130; see my review of Eibl-Eibesfeldt too)."The taxi-driver... takes me to Freud's house and surgery... (he is one of) the... founders of the new science" (p. 203). Despite my lack of driving licence, I notice that the Austrian Freud, graduated in medicine in Vienna, published his essay Ãœber Coca in 1884 and never changed his mind. He never recognized his mistake. But tobacco is still legal everywhere; and tolerance is common. Now Magris is probably the most known scholar of Germanic philology in Italy. As an Italian living in Gallura, in my latest publication Saggi di gnoseologia I mentioned the Florentine Germanist Onesti, who unfortunately died in August. My balanced commentaries about her are in my latest publication and in my reviews in Amazon, in which my lack of knowledge of German is evident, but also my support for the comparative method of philology.Roberto FideliTranslator and writer [...]

It was beautifully written, informative, and thought provoking; it was an humanities class of central Europe between pages. In addition, it providedinsight into the mental gymnastics a Marxist intellectual had to put himself to be able to justify to himself European Communism.

Excellent. Arrived quickly

Analysis I: Third Edition (Texts and Readings in Mathematics)

From the Back Cover

This is part one of a two-volume book on real analysis and is intended for senior undergraduate students of mathematics who have already been exposed to calculus. The emphasis is on rigour and foundations of analysis. Beginning with the construction of the number systems and set theory, the book discusses the basics of analysis (limits, series, continuity, differentiation, Riemann integration), through to power series, several variable calculus and Fourier analysis, and then finally the Lebesgue integral. These are almost entirely set in the concrete setting of the real line and Euclidean spaces, although there is some material on abstract metric and topological spaces. The book also has appendices on mathematical logic and the decimal system. The entire text (omitting some less central topics) can be taught in two quarters of 25–30 lectures each. The course material is deeply intertwined with the exercises, as it is intended that the student actively learn the material (and practice thinking and writing rigorously) by proving several of the key results in the theory.

You know, I'm honestly surprised that this book has not been adopted at colleges and universities other than UCLA. I've read all the analysis books on the market at this point, Rudin, Johnsonbaugh, Abbott and Ross, and to be honest, this particular book stands out among the others in that none of the content of this book is a regurgitation of memorized content. So many instructors, graduate students and textbooks simply memorize their material without questioning it, and then regurgitate the "industry standard, or accepted standard" methods in textbooks they write, and this is apparent if you read enough books. But Tao is different. You won't find a single reference to another book, and you won't find a single standard proof. Instead, what you'll see is exactly what and how Terrance Tao himself understands the concepts he writes about, and every proof and explanation is 100% original. The benefits of this is that you will never be questioning why something is the way it is since Tao personally goes out of his way to thoroughly explain every little darn thing inside and out with an obvious complete mastery over the subject. And along the way he challenges students to stop memorizing theorems, and rather, to start understanding them. I love this.

This book may not have the normal flavor of other analysis books. But it is by no means inferior. Especially if you are more of an algebra brain than an analysis brain, this book transfers you safely from your familiar world of algebra to that of analysis. Rudin will be more accessible afterwards.

As described, thanks

Solid text.

This is the best Mathematical Analysis book I know.Wonderful!!!

This isn't a reference text, this is a book meant to be read from beginning to end. If you are the type of person who likes to start from first principles then this is the book for you. There are no answers, but for the most part I didn't need them. A lot of the difficult problems are often broken down hence almost everything is manageable.Note: If you are currently in the middle of a real analysis class then this book likely isn't for you. By the time you get to page 90 you start to cover the same content most analysis books start to cover at around page 20-25. You NEED to start from the beginning to get the most from Tao's brilliant introduction to real analysis. Most real analysis books assume you have an understanding of the basics (sets, number systems, functions, etc). Tao does too, but he also assumes your understanding of the material is unrefined and hand-wavy at best and takes the opportunity to construct everything from the ground up. You start with the notion of an object, using this you define the Peano axioms and construct the natural number, as well as define what addition and multiplication are. After you take a detour and construct what is essentially Zermelo–Fraenkel set theory (axiom of choice comes much later near the end of the book). At around page 79 you define what subtraction is. Finally, at page 94 you begin your construction of the reals.Don't let the definition-proposition/lemma-proof style scare you. As you start by constructing everything from the ground up you are at no point confused as to what you need to do--the first principles approach gives you a sense of clarity you won't get from other books.I highly recommend some learning aids such spaced repetition (I used ANKI) and concept mapping. As you start from the very beginning there is quite a lot to take in hence without a way to organize your thoughts and revise you will easily find yourself forgetting things from the start.

Nothing was left behind on this book!

This book is extremely well written. I'd recommend it for everyone who wants to learn basics of analysis extremely well. I cannot think of such a book that goes to this fundamendal level of material as this one.

Kenneth Ellman Reviews Jury Nullification by Clay S. Conrad , A Reminder That Fear is the Enemy of Justice, November 30, 2014. From: ke@kennethellman.com, Box 18, Newton, New Jersey 07860 I have found during many years of exposure and participation in litigation and law that most people most of the time have a fear of Courthouses, Courts, Juries, Judges and unfortunately many other things. They frequently are at a loss as to this legal environment and are not sure when in the midst of legal proceedings, what they should or must or can do. They feel in a sense naked. Many people have not previously confronted the power of a Judge or Legal Process to compel an answer during a Voir Dire and if their answer is not found agreeable to be subjected to rigorous examination, all in public and on a Record. Yes there are exceptions to this fear of being in a legal environment but it is unusual to find those who look forward to a Courtroom or a trial as a comforting place. Yet the Jury, frequently composed of persons not previously exposed to legal confrontation, must enter this environment and become utterly essential to the opportunity for the truth finding function of the Court. They must perform this critical function upon a Jury Summons which normally does not care about their other obligations in life and wants them to now decide the fate of their fellow community members whether in Criminal or Civil proceedings. They must subject themselves to Voir Dire, frequently of both the Judge and of the parties. They must put aside their other activities of life and become part of the human embodiment of the Law, for better or for worse. Jurors must confront the hope of the parties that come before them that somehow these fellow men and women, can enter into a place where their prejudices and misconceptions do not control. A place where they can look upon the Case before them and make a Judgment as a Juror sworn to impartially and without fear, determine the truth of the cause. Jurors must perform this function in what we hope is a secretive, uncorruptible and protective place, so that they have no fear of anything except the failure to diligently perform their duty. This Jury Nullification book by Conrad enters into the reality that a Juror can in that special protected place of Juror Deliberations vote their Conscience upon the facts and Trial of the matter before them. That Conscience, perhaps the Conscience of the community sitting as Juror can also be described as expression of our Justice so we can live with what we know is right. It is a difficult balance for some between the Truth Finding function and the Conscience of the Juror to live with his vote, as he implements our Justice in that Case before him. Now after taking our neighbors and making them Jurors we also expect them to have the courage and understanding to learn about Jury Nullification as described in this wonderful book. We expect our Juror/Neighbor to consider having a different opinion from a Judge or the other authority in the case. Jurors as discussed in this book by Conrad, can keep their own counsel and make their own decision, certainly on the facts and perhaps as this book addresses on the Law too. That is a sword that swings both ways, but it is a reality of Jury Deliberations. There is only one reason we have Juries. It is perhaps for the same reason we choose Constitutional Democracy. What are the alternatives? Certainly not better, probably worse. Once we accept that we are all just men hoping and trying to maintain Law with each other, we realize that there are no great or supermen amongst us to whom we can delegate our decisions. We must participate in the Law just as we must participate in elections and other safeguards of our way of life. The decision makers are ourselves. Our Law, our Jury System, is created by a combination of our Constitution and our Democracy. That is what keeps us free. This work by Conrad on Jury Nullification is a careful, detailed, well annotated creation of 310 pages that has been available since around 1998. Conrad explains the subject addressing all arguments and concerns in an academic yet easy to understand manner. Here in this book you have a combination of history, political science, law and human behavior with all the ramifications of such in a Courtroom. If books such as this were made part of Social Studies and Political Science classes in High School and College, then our Law and Community would greatly benefit for the truth is that we govern ourselves and while sometimes such power is scary we should not be afraid to see our face in the mirror. There is a fine line between Law and Justice. Perhaps this book may help to bring them closer together which should be the goal of all Judges, Jurors and the rest of us. Buy this book and learn. This book was vital in my fuller understanding and education on a subject of which I had only fragmented knowledge. It helped me flesh-out my minimalist campaign platform (Libertarian for Wayne County Prosecutor, in Wayne County, Michigan --> Afton4waynecountyprosecutor.com ), one plank being that as prosecutor I will promote Jury Nullification, by never opposing a defense attorney from implementing jury instructions to a jury in a criminal case that remind them of a defendant's 800+ year-old right to have a jury judge their case entirely---facts and law both---and to otherwise take the role of judge as implied in the phrase "judgment by a jury of one's peers." ; i.e., to judge not just the facts but also the law, in accordance with a juror's conscience, even if that leads a juror to nullify or ignore the law, as a means to ameliorate a harsh penalty under the law or unjust application of the law. While it is not addressed in the US Constitution, I believe Jury Nullification could be a de facto aspect of Federalism, in that it provides one more check-and-balance on government expediency and over-reach, and is a vital impediment to tyranny that occurs at the most local level. This book has everything an attorney needs to be convinced he is doing a just and moral thing, and compatible with the evolution of Western Civilization and classical liberalism, when he finds ways to promote Jury Nullification, and to breakdown the predation of the State.

This is THE definitive book on Jury Nullification. It is the inherent right of the people to judge the facts of the case AND the law, and it's a right the people need to regain. Clay Conrad has obviously researched the subject well.

Absolutely fascinating read, this book is really eye opening. And if you do not care to serve on a jury, take this book with you to jury duty. When the judge asks if you have any questions about selection raise your hand, hold up this book. Ask for clarification (as on page 256 of the book) if the judge feels that taking a jurors oath will preclude you from your right to practice jury nullification in the event that you do not concur with the validity of the law. You will be out of there so fast your head will spin.

Wish i knew about this Years ago!!A must read for EVERYBODY who cares about you life in this country
