These authors know what they're doing and they've got the successful business to prove it. The book covers (and simplifies) every aspect of creating and growing. Any intimidating area from fertilizing to drip irrigation is broken down into easy-to-understand information with lots of concise facts and suggestions in each short paragraph. There is even a nice element of humor. The photographs are simply gorgeous as well as plentiful. Troubleshooting, container gardens, plant profiles (including container suitability), new methods for old concepts, and more are included in this comprehensive manual. I really can't recommend it enough. If you want to grow food but don't think it is possible (black thumb, only a patio or balcony, too time-consuming, etc.) this book will absolutely give you the resources and confidence you need to start.

I bought a house in Seattle about a year ago on a 3,000 square foot lot. Last Summer, we installed a chicken coop. This Summer, we're taking the next step and starting our first garden.A lot of beginning garden books gloss over important topics and don't really give you a true playbook to get started. Food Grown Right starts with building a garden. I found the best spot in my backyard that had the most sun from beginning to end of the season. I considered the options for creating beds including mounds, raised beds, or containers. I followed the instructions to build three cedar raised beds including buying, cutting, and assembling the lumber. One of my favorite parts of the book is the month by month guide that shows you what you should be doing. In March, I'm really just doing prep work to get the garden in shape. All this weeding and cleaning will pay dividends once the planting season begins. Each month is also outlined with what to plant and what you should be doing. For each plant, there's a section of the book that goes into details on how to tend for the plant. Another neat feature is what you'll learn by planting. For example, corn needs to be planted close to each other so that they'll pollinate by the wind. Most of my other garden books are put back on the shelf. I have my "Food Grown Right" book next to my garden tools. It'll be my Spring and Summer playbook. Highly recommend this book to help you get started.

I have always wanted to plant a veggie garden, but haven't had the space until recently. I'm putting in a raised bed garden this year and was looking for a book that would simplify "garden knowledge" and give me lots of visual ideas. I also wanted a book that was somewhat relevant to the Pacific Northwest and covered Organic gardening. I have nearly zero garden knowledge by the way.I looked through a few garden books before selecting this one. This had the most visuals of books I looked through. After reading it I was impressed by the simplicity and ease of reading. I usually only had time for one chapter each time I opened the book, which took about 10-20 minutes each. I love the color photographs in each chapter. They were really helpful in illustrating the topics. The book covers the basics, planning, selecting and preparing a location, building planting boxes from scratch or raised beds, container (i.e. pots) gardening, planting and managing your crops through all season/problems, and selecting what crops to grow. It's clear these guys write from personal experiences. Although the authors are from the Pacific Northwest I think the book would apply to most any climate and they seem to write the book in a way that doesn't alienate any climate. The entire book was dedicated to the concept of Organic gardening so there was nothing that covered the use of chemicals or other unnatural products.Armed with the ideas and knowledge from the book I felt confident in my ability to get started. I don't always get that feeling with "do-it-yourself" books, but this one did a great job. I quickly and easily selected a sunny location in my yard that would fit one of the recommended raised bed sizes. I made a crude drawing of what I wanted, acquired second-hand a few of the recommended garden tools, hit the hardware store and I am off and running.

I love this book. I read it from cover to cover. I am a beginner gardener and this book makes gardening extremely accessible. It has exactly the right amount of information. Enough to make you feel confident, but not so much that you feel overwhelmed. The pictures are so well done, and the writing is fun in addition to being interesting! It's like reading a cookbook with pictures that inspire you to cook, only instead of cooking you want to turn your front lawn into a series of gorgeous garden boxes and grow kale, tomatoes and cucumbers! I highly recommend.

This is a great, very informative well done book on growing your own veggie garden and more. Easy to understand, well organized, great "tips" sections that are very helpful. The photos are not only beautiful but useful. I have been gardening for nearly 40 years when I came across this book. I was stuck by the clear and complete format of this book. It addresses every aspect of gardening from preparing your soil, composting, planting, details about plants, pests and disease and so much more. I found it to be a worthwhile book to add to my garden book collection and I've learned some new and valuable information. In my opinion this book is not just for beginners but for ALL gardeners.I love the idea and "how to" that McCarte and Halm promote in this book that ANYBODY, no matter what size yard, deck or space you have you can still grow your own food!Growing even a few of your own crops is a rewarding and fun experience and this is a great book to help you accomplish that.
