I think most Christians will find learning about the feasts fascinating as the Spring Feasts have been fulfilled by Christ during His First Advent through His death, burial, and resurrection and the remaining Fall feasts will be fulfilled at the Second Advent.

I gave this book 5 stars as I am really glad I bought it. I am just over halfway through and am enjoying this book immensely. It is very informative and written in an easy style that asks questions and gives answers. I would thoroughly recommend this book to anyone. I love learning the Biblical Jewish roots of the Christian faith and this book delivers on this.

Do you desire to understand the Feasts of Israel, how they were & are celebrated? Read this book. If you want a deeper understanding and appreciation for God's revelation of His plan for redemption through Jesus the Messiah, read this book.Too many churches today lack the deeper understanding that a Jewish believer can provide for those of us who are not the physical descendants of Abraham but are his spiritual descendants. As a Bible student & teacher for over 25 yrs, I am studied the feasts through other resources, including books, Bible studies, DVDs, but Sam Nadler's book is by far my favorite resource. The Kindle version offers great interactive links, navigates better than many "resource" or devotional books which I own & use in the Kindle format. I highly recommend.

I got this because I am doing a book-by-book study of Jesus Christ in the Old Testament. I am at Leviticus and ordered this to supplement that study. WOW!! I would so recommend this book to anyone who really wants to have a better understanding of the Jewish roots of our (Christian) faith. To see how Jesus unfailingly fulfilled each of these feasts (in addition to other aspects of the Old Testament) has drawn me closer to him and has given me a fuller appreciation of His completed work of redemption at Calvary. Plus, it's a fairly easy read. Just keep your Bible nearby because there's a lot of scriptural references (and RIGHTFULLY so!!!). The questions at the end of each chapter would make this great for small Bible study groups. Definitely, a good buy.

Wonderful book. Easy to understand. Very helpful in understanding Jewish festivals and also the link between Judaism and Christianity. Love it!

Well researched information. The book is easy to read. Sadly, the editing, if any was done at all, was terrible.

I have read other books regarding Jesus and the Jewish feasts, but I have to say this is by far the best! Written by someone who was raised Jewish, he goes in depth into each of the Jewish feasts, through his own personal experiences, showing us exactly how Jesus fulfills each one of them, with biblical references to support everything. I have read parts of this book more than once - something I very rarely do (just because there is so much out there I want to read). I have recommended this book to friends and will continue to recommend it to many more. I also teach bible studies and found this book an invaluable reference book. I would whole-heartedly recommend this book to every Christian. You will not be disappointed! Enjoy and God Bless.

It amazes me how everthing in The New Testament revealed, can be found in The Old Testament consealed! See it for yourself.

I gave this to my niece for her 8th birthday and it was absolutely her favorite gift. Every time I see her she tells me how much she loves it. The book comes with a full-color poster, which she hung on her wall and studies every night so she can tell me some new fact about crystals every time I see her. As if that wasn't enough, the book also comes with a CD of crystal and gem clip art, so she can make her own arts & crafts projects. Great value for the money.

I first got this book at the library but after renewing it 5 times I realized I had to buy it because my son won’t put it down. My 2nd grader loves it.

Purchased this book for my 10 year old grandson who is very interested in gemstones and where they come from. Also purchased two other books for him that were more geared toward adults. He is an avid reader and wise beyond his years. I honestly thought that he would be more interested in the other gemstone books. This is his favorite and I think it is because of all the illustrations. Perhaps too, the font is larger and the way it is presented in the book, it is great information that is not overwhelming to a younger person.

My 6 year old son loves these books - they are really fun for kids (and grown ups!). The pictures are lovely and high quality, and there is a ton of information in them. Highly recommend.

The book is just beautifully illustrated with significant facts, however it is not too in depht. It did come with a large poster that can also be used as a visual aide and with a CD . It was fine for my ten year old daughter to do her research on crystals with, ( which is the reason why we bought it) but she had to find additional information in other books and the internet in order to get her research done. Overall everyone in the family did enjoy looking through its pages and learning the facts.

We are using this as our supplement to our geology class. Very informative and relevant to all ages. Great find!

Very informative, well illustrated, scientifically researched, some important info about superstitions and crystals. My 12 year old granddaughter was reading this book with me and found it a good addition to her school science lessons.

My 5 year old son has developed an intense interest in rocks, crystals, and gems. He LOVES this book even though a lot of the information is over his head----it is chock full of beautiful pictures and interesting information. It is a book that will definitely grow with him---I'm in my 40's and learning things I didn't know about crystals and gems. :)

The Sleepwalker CHAPTER 1 BACK Bethany Parker had been away on a mission for eight months, which was long enough for plenty to change on CHERUB campus. There was a line of freshly planted saplings along the path that led to the main entrance, new floor tiles in the main building, and an enormous satellite dish in the gravel outside the mission preparation building. But it was the other cherubs that really made Bethany feel like she’d missed out: Girls had different hairstyles and cute boys had succumbed to acne; there were qualified agents she’d never even seen and new red shirts who seemed impossibly tiny. As she stepped out of the elevator on the ground floor, Bethany spotted the handler Meryl Spencer. The athletically built Kenyan broke into a warm smile. “Nice tan, Bethany. We’ve been hearing good things about you.” Bethany was slightly embarrassed by the compliment. “Thanks, miss . . . I’m looking for Lauren, have you seen her around?” “She’s probably over by the vehicle shop. There’s supposed to be some kind of race or something. I expect your brother, Jake, will be up there too.” Bethany felt guilty as she realized she’d prioritized finding her best friend over her kid brother. After jogging down a short corridor, she stepped through the back doors of the campus’s main building and ran down the path between the all-weather tennis courts. Her combat trousers and boots felt clumsy after eight months in parts of Brazil and the United States, where she’d rarely worn anything heavier than shorts and sandals. The sun was dropping below the horizon as she crossed the deserted playing fields. Orange light pierced the trees and made her squint, but being back on campus felt good. The cool evening air was a change from the humidity, and she deliberately ran through the muddiest part of a goalmouth because she felt more at home with a bit of CHERUB campus stuck to her brand-new boots: after a struggle she’d discovered that her old pair didn’t fit. “Lauren,” Bethany shouted as she came over the brow of a slight hill. Down below, a crowd of thirty kids were gathered in the parking lot. They mostly faced toward a squat workshop with aluminium sides. The three sets of hangar-style doors along the front were open. Inside were brightly lit workstations covered with tools, and four cars in various states of disassembly. All vehicles in the CHERUB fleet got upgraded in this workshop: stiffer suspension, satellite tracking, performance-tuned engine, plus tinted glass and subtly altered controls to make life easier for underaged drivers. To ensure the highest standards of reliability, routine servicing and repair work was also done on campus, along with occasional special jobs, such as fitting a car with a hidden compartment or installing listening devices. Quite a few people turned to see who was shouting. Lauren Adams gasped as she recognized her best friend. She backed out of the crowd and charged up the hill to give Bethany a hug. “My god,” Lauren screamed happily as the two girls pulled each other tight. “I didn’t even know you were back. Why didn’t you text me?” Bethany smiled and made a little squealing sound. “I wanted it to be a surprise.” “When did you get back from Brazil?” Bethany looked at her watch. “Our jet landed at the RAF base down the road five hours ago, but I had to go straight into an emergency debriefing with Maureen Evans, and then I had to see the chairwoman.” Lauren looked at her friend’s navy CHERUB T-shirt. “Promotion, too. Well done!” “Zara told me I deserved black,” Bethany said. “But you only get that for outstanding performance on more than one mission, no matter how long you’re away.” Lauren nodded sympathetically, though she was secretly pleased that she still outranked her friend. “So how was the mission?” “Hard work, but we took care of business in the end. How about you, are you still suspended?” Lauren shrugged. “I spent a few days doing security tests on RAF bases, and I helped a pair of new agents settle into a mission over in Northern Ireland, but I’m still banned from going on any big missions of my own for another month.” “I brought you back a present, but I thought I’d save it for your birthday next week,” Bethany said before stopping to give a curious look at a small girl dashing up the hill toward them. “This is Coral,” Lauren explained as the six-year-old sidled up to her. “When I got punished I had to go and help out in the junior block. You know, putting the little red shirts to bed and reading them stories and stuff? But I enjoyed it, so I still go over there to help out, and I get enough learning credits out of it that I don’t have to do stupid dance or drama classes anymore.” “Cool.” Bethany smiled. “Though I’ve never understood what you’ve got against drama classes.” Lauren tutted as Coral slid her hand in Lauren’s trouser pocket and shyly nuzzled her leg. “Drama’s so moronic,” Lauren moaned. “Remember that time Mrs. Dickerson had us waving our arms around pretending to be trees for a whole hour?” Bethany laughed as she imitated the teacher’s voice. “Breathe deeeeeeep and feel your body move with the wind rushing through your branches.” “I wouldn’t mind so much, but you can’t breathe deep,” Lauren said. “That drama studio has no windows and it always stinks of feet.” The two girls laughed harder than the joke deserved, because it felt good being back together. “Coral, this is my friend Bethany,” Lauren said as she pulled the little girl out from behind her legs. “Stop acting daft and say hello.” Bethany squatted down and gave the tiny girl a smile. “Coral’s only been on campus a few days,” Lauren explained. “Her big brother’s already rumbling with the other red shirts, but Coral’s a bit overwhelmed, so I’m keeping an eye until she settles in.” “Hello, Bethany,” Coral said as she reached out to shake hands. Bethany noticed chips of Lauren’s black nail polish on Coral’s fingernails as she took her little hand. “Aren’t you formal!” she said. “Nice to meet you, Coral.” Coral seemed less shy after the introductions. Lauren and Bethany each took one of her hands and stretched the youngster between them as they walked downhill toward the gathering in front of the vehicle workshop. “So what’s going on in the garage?” Bethany asked. “It’s mainly about boys flexing their egos and getting grease on their overalls,” Lauren said. “You can cut the testosterone down there with a knife.” “I see,” Bethany said, though she clearly didn’t. “They retired a couple of the old golf carts the staff use for getting around campus,” Lauren continued. “But instead of scrapping them, Terry Campbell has been helping some of the boys convert them into racing carts by fitting motorbike engines. You know what James is like about anything even slightly to do with motorbikes? I’ve hardly seen him since we got back from summer hostel.” “And my brother’s involved too?” Lauren nodded. “Jake’s part of James’s crew.” With Coral still holding their hands, Lauren and Bethany eased between the crowd and stepped through the open front of the garage. There were two golf carts, each surrounded by boys in blue overalls. The carts were dented and rusty after more than a decade of plying the paths around campus, but instead of being allowed to die with dignity, they’d had their batteries and electric motors stripped out and replaced by the engine and transmission from a motorbike, and a selection of dubious accessories stuck on the outside. James’s team had added four sets of wing mirrors, gold paint, and go-faster stripes. “What a heap of crap,” Bethany said, making sure everyone heard as she stepped up to James Adams’s stocky legs, which poked from beneath the jacked-up cart. “Hey, sis,” Bethany’s eleven-year-old brother, Jake, said as he turned away from a tool chest. “Did you bring me a prezzie?” “I’ve got three loads of dirty laundry you can have if you like,” Bethany said before giving him a brief hug. Like most siblings, Jake and Bethany loved each other deep down, but in their case, you needed a submarine with a powerful searchlight to get there. James slid out from under the cart and spoke to his three teammates as he sat up. “I put a clamp and half a roll of sticky tape over the seals, so we shouldn’t have any more problems with oil pressure.” “I’m back, James,” Bethany said, grinning and holding her arms out exuberantly. “Are you pleased to see me?” James shook his head with contempt as he lifted up the cart and kicked away the jacks before lowering it to the ground. He was shocked at how different Bethany looked. She’d grown eight centimeters, she had much nicer boobs, and the tan made her look older than thirteen. If she’d been a couple of years older, she was the kind of girl he’d probably try getting off with. “You’ve certainly changed,” James said as he looked around and saw that the other two members of his crew—thirteen-year-olds Rat and Andy—practically had their tongues hanging out. “Bethany, listen to this baby when we fire her up,” Rat said eagerly as he lunged toward the cockpit and reached in to press the starter button. “I’m nearest,” Andy said as the two boys leaned into the golf cart from opposite sides and almost cracked skulls. Andy reached the button first, and there was a clattering sound, followed by a huge plume of foul-smelling exhaust and finally a roaring noise that made the metal walls of the workshop shudder. “Mr. Campbell showed us how to tune the exhaust to make it as noisy as possible,” Andy shouted as he studied Bethany’s reaction. “Pretty cool, eh, sis?” Jake yelled. The noise made Coral squeeze her hands over her ears as Lauren and Bethany looked at each other and shook their heads. Lauren leaned across, shouting into her best friend’s ear, “I think we’re supposed to be impressed by this.” Bethany shook her head and laughed. “They’re so manly! How can we possibly resist them?”

I reviewed number 5 and knew I would be reading more, so I just gave the author accolades for the epilogues, wherein we find out what happened to all the notable characters. I HATE books that close with loose ends all over the place. I am chain reading this series. The premise is novel. The character development is top drawer. I feel like I know the main characters as we go through their teen years together. Each novel has a totally new plot line. Just very good reading.

Good story, decent character development but somewhat predictable.

It’s a great book but there are like 30 pages missing in the middle of the book that instead have pages from a completely different novel. It’s something like pages 250-284 are missing

Cherub: The Sleepwalker was a pretty good book that had a great story to it but the language and set up wasn't as good as the other Cherub books. The other books by Robert Muchamore had a more balanced telling of the story whereas the Sleepwalker had very drawn out beginning and an ending that lacked detail and action. The events were more told to the characters rather than experienced by them. I think that you should read these books if you are into adventure, danger and the art of espionage but be sure to read the other books first because those definitely give you reason to continue reading the series.

It was a very good interesting book and if you have read the series some old characters are re introduced into the book and James has to decide between which relationship he wants.

It is amazing and is the second best book next to book two. Hopefully there are many more too come. I would also like for James and Kerry to get back together!

Review

"Terrific…Grisham, can still devise distinctive characters, tricky legal predicaments and rogueishly cheating ways to worm out of them."--Maureen Corrigan, The Washington Post "Sebastian Rudd is a kind of social justice warrior and Grisham uses him to take jabs at the legal system…all with a blunt, rude, gravelly poetic wise guy voice that makes Rudd come across as a kind of 21st-century Philip Marlowe."--Benjamin Percy, The New York Times Book Review

This most recent effort by John Grisham follows an attorney who practices in the Fifteenth Circuit of the United States in federal and state court. His name is Sebastian Rudd and what makes Rudd unique compared to most attorneys is his willingness to accept clients no other attorney would take. These range for an accused child molester/murderer, a rage prone boxer, a crime don eager to escape death row, and a man with ties to human trafficking. His most important client, however, is himself for the often acrimonious custody hearings he faces against his ex-wife. Accompanying him at all times are his silent bodyguard Partner and a heavily armored van that serves as both office and transportation. The novel unfortunately often felt like a collection of short stories pasted together, with Rudd as the only figure who maintains a continuous narrative. Rather than focus on one trial throughout the entire book, every thirty to forty pages Rudd will win or lose a particular case and then move on. While this may accurately reflect the life of defense attorneys, it unfortunately does little to flesh out the characters into ones the reader can actively sympathize with or despise. Similarly, despite Rudd's repeated proclamations that he is a rogue lawyer, he actually is a pretty honest one. While he is willing to pay cops for information and occasionally represents bad characters, about the only sanction-worthy act he commits throughout the course of the novel is bribing a court clerk to get a particular judge to hear his civil suit.Despite these flaws, Grisham clearly displays that he was (and still is) an attorney. He has a good handle on the minutiae of courtroom criminal procedure and paints a portrait of an attorney whose character, while exaggerated, is believable. He also creates an interesting series of cases for the attorney to handle. The ending comes somewhat abruptly, but it is in such a manner that I suspect Mr. Grisham has a sequel possibly in mind. If he eventually does write one, I will be sure to read it.

Sebastian Rudd is a lawyer who defends scumbags. He is unafraid of the inherent dangers that accompany many of these defenses, and he is a fearless negotiator who tries all angles available to him to ensure that justice is done even to the most unsavory characters. The public thinks he is a scumbag himself for defending such vermin, and many of the vermin that he defends don’t deserve a lawyer of his caliber, and they don’t appreciate his talent or his ability to play with his gloves off. He is tough and always seems to operate best when he is right along the borderline of ethical behavior. He is divorced, his ex-wife is an industrial grade bitch, and he loves cage fighting in his off time. He shoots pool at weird hours, and his office is in a van, driven by his bouncer, Partner. The book weaves its’ way in and out of a number of seedy people with nasty legal problems, and he is in constant danger from many different places. He deals with criminal behavior from the police in one instance, and he tries to defend a fighter who killed a referee in another case. An assortment of people who are mostly on the fringe make this a very interesting read, with no real lasting value other than entertainment. This book has a scattered plot; it seems to jump from one story to another without too much tie. Grisham attempts to make connections by concocting some wild events that give the story a contrived feel. The end is very unsatisfying. It leaves too many loose ends dangling, and it feels like the author just got tired of writing, so he quit. All in all, a satisfactory book to entertain. It is high on entertainment, low on value.

Rogue Lawyer is the newest John Grisham legal thriller about defense attorney Sebastian Rudd. This book is about Sebastian Rudd, a defense attorney who represents unpopular clients and has no issues pushing the bounds of ethics to defend his clients.  The book is written in the first person as Sebastian Rudd narrates to us his thought process on his varies clients he represents and his dealings with prosecutors and law enforcement. This gives us a better understanding on why he does things and how he justifies them, as he goes all out for each of his various clients. We also get a good look at his personal life and the issues he has going on.  I really enjoyed this book. Book moves at a quick pace right from the beginning. I especially liked the first person point of view. Which I think gives us a better understanding of the character Sebastian Rudd. I'm hoping Sebastian Rudd becomes a series, as I would like to see more of this character. I found him to be a fascinating character.I definitely recommend this book to those who enjoy mystery/thriller books. John Grisham fans will not be disappointed. Â

A preview of a character and a series of plots that the industry that is John Grisham hopes will keep the writers' room busy between his novels and employed for many volumes falters on the first one. Plot elements strain credulity, the writing style almost a parady of hard-boiled detective series, think Raymond Chandler particularly in his description of female characters, and the characters seem to have emerged off the pages of graphic novels. The rogue lawyer--is he really meant to be as unappealing as he seems--lacks nuance and depth, his sidekick, Partner provides muscle, and the lesbian ex-wife and perfect kid are straight off-the shelf of left-over characters. There are some Grisham moments--the criminal escaping his execution--but why is he so desperate for money that he sends his muscle to intimidate our hero--the effecting commentary on young black men in prison and the compulsive liar with the info on the missing girl who finally gets tedious with his knowledge of our hero's movements. Well, Stephen King is doing it, JK Rawlings is doing it, Nelson DeMille has done it, so why not John Grisham and his writers' room?

I am a relatively new archer and started shooting Asian style over 2 years ago. Stephen Selby's book is more then a book on archery, it opens up a lot of Chinese history from a military and archer's point of view. It opened my eye to the ancient roots of archery in the Middle Kingdom before it was even called Middle Kingdom. Growing up with the oral history of Hou Yi, but many Chinese forgot Hou Yi shot down 9 suns with a bow and arrows. It doesn't matter if it's true or not, but one must know: great archery stories existed in the land before there was history written about it.Archery was banned in China by the Communist Party until after the cultural revolution, so in essence, Chinese archery had suffered an end, but picked up again by the various makers and archers in China. There are many archers outside China very much interested, and practice, various Chinese methods. This book and research will help as a Renaissance of Chinese archery. It contains numerous Chinese writings and manuals on archery from various dynasties with English translation. From bow and arrow making, to principles and ideas. That ALONE makes the book worth 10x the price [well you know how Chinese like to say that kind of thing, I might not buy this book if it's 10x the price, but, you know, it's worth it].The book also discuss some of the important changes in later dynasties, such as Ming Dynasty's writings that influenced so much of Korean and Japanese Kyudo that we know of today. All in all, for the archer or the historian, this book is a MUST have.

This is THE definitive book for anyone with an interest in archery across the span of Chinese history. Unbelievably well researched, clear, concise, and enjoyably readable, this book covers the social, political, and cultural role of archery in Chinese society. Even if one is not a boyer or bow shooter, this book is a fascinating read. If you are an archer this book needs to be in your library.

Excellent!

A lot of good information but you have to look for it and it is difficult to follow.

"Chinese Archery" by Stephen Selby is a book that is easy to use. The author introduces the subject of each chapter, thenfollows with the original Chinese sources and his straightforward translations. He then discusses the texts and the ideas they present. Selby is careful to include references to variant interpretations, where the texts may be ambiguous or where there may be scholarly debate. Unless it is vitally important to reading a given section, most of this discussion is kept to footnotes. The book covers three thousand years of archery in China and discusses bows, arrows, crossbows, archers' rings, targets, and shooting technique. Selby includes some clear and relevant colour photographs at the beginning of the book and supplements them with black and white photographs in the body of the work. He also uses old woodblock prints, computer-generated drawings and diagrams to illustrate the translations. "Chinese Archery" is a good resource for the scholar and an interesting book for the nonspecialist. An extensive bibliography and the careful discussions of the translations are a positive advantage. Having the Chinese texts present makes this book more valuable than a translation only because the reader can check the original. With the discovery of new material, "Chinese Archery" will become a reference for identification and comparison. The bow-maker and the archer will benefit from the descriptions and instructions in this book. Readers, who are interested primarily in other forms of traditional and modern archery, will at last have an insight into what really was going on in Chinese archery over the last three thousand years. The general reader will see through the window of a particular activity the many ways in which a culture can approach dealing with its problems, including education and social relations.

I have not only read through most of this book, but also met the author. He is someone who is quite the expert at practicing the archery in which this book discusses. I have found this book to be extremely thorough in both the history of archery in Asia, as well as the forms and exercises associated with it's practice. The level of research makes this a scholarly work but presented in a readable fashion full of pictures and diagrams where appropriate, translations of period references on almost every other page, and instruction on how to shoot a bow in the Chinese style as can only be told by someone with personal experience in addition to the translations of instruction from various texts.A nice feature of this book is how archery in China is put into perspective across the large span of history and geography it covers. It is not an isolationist view of a single culture but rather it takes into account the styles of archery as well as the attitudes about it from the various cultures that were both influential to and influenced by China.Overall I would say it is an intense, well rounded book and I highly recommend it.

I really really enjoyed this work. And after several months of practicing Chinese archery, I read through it a second time and gained an even deeper appreciation for the effort Stephen put into this book. He does a great job combining discussions on archery, culture, history, science and technology --- I learned a great deal, even beyond technique. My favorite parts are Chapters 11 and 12, where the translations do a great job of conveying the down-to-earth humor of some authors from the late Ming dynasty.

#832,012 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

In late May, 1963, two men, having spent the night at 27,000 feet on a ledge carved out of ice on a sheer cliff face, begin the final ascent to the highest place on Earth, Mt. Everest, 29,029 feet above sea level. They are climbing without fixed ropes, freestyle, with no support team and no chance of rescue. They are wearing reindeer-skin boots, woolen pants, shirts and mitts and windbreaker jackets. Except for rudimentary oxygen tanks and masks, they are without any of the high tech gear that is standard to even the lowliest mountaineer today. It is an achievement in mountaineering that is in many ways unrivaled for its sheer audacity and, unless you are a climbing aficionado, largely unknown. This is the story told in “Everest: The West Ridge” by Tom Hornbein, one of the two men that made the historic summit of Everest by the previously untried West Ridge. Told in an almost matter of fact and humble manner, it is the stuff every boy and most men dream of privately. Of facing death, going on anyway, and winning. It is the stuff of legends and dreams.Climbing Everest by a route no man had ever tried before. Knowing that they could not reach the summit with time to get down. Knowing that the route they chose did not allow them to turn back or retreat. Hornbein never admits it in this book, but he had to know that death was more probable than survival. And still they made the decision to go forward, a conscious decision in my mind that left only success or death as the two possible outcomes. Hornbein dances near to this issue throughout the book, but for some reason never tackles it head on. Maybe it was a decision he did not want to admit to for some reason. But when faced with the opportunity to do what no man had ever done before, even if it meant his death, he pushed on and grasped for the gold ring, and then spent the better part of the rest of his life trying to pretend it was no big deal.Only dumb luck and iron will saved them. But they succeeded, the gods smiled at their audacity and will to succeed. There are two kinds of bravery and heroism I think. The first kind occurs when you have a split second to react, to save a life or lives with little time to think or ponder. The second kind occurs when you have lots of time to think. When the only life at risk is yours. When the easiest course is to turn back and no one would think the worse of you. But you move ahead anyway, knowing the two outcomes are success or death. That is a special kind of heroism and the subject of this book. Serendipity and luck also course through this story. How it never could have happened without the alignment of the heavens and almost mystical providence. The other key element I took from this book is how, when served up similar circumstances, men react and behave so differently. How some men, experienced mountaineers and strong climbers, never acclimated to altitude and suffered cruel defeat while supposedly lesser men soared to glory and thrived in the inhospitable environment presented to them. How is it that the man recruited to be the radio operator, needed to provide a willing back for manual labor because of the illness of others, ends up on the North ridge of Everett at 27,000 feet blazing a trail to the final camp?I highly recommend this book, as well as the excellent historical recounting of the expedition The Vast Unknown, by Broughton Coburn.

In 1963, an American expedition put six men on top of Mount Everest, at a point in time when only a handful of climbers had accomplished that feat. From a mountaineering point of view, the most remarkable legacy of the expedition was the first ascent of Everest via the West Ridge by the team of Willi Unsoeld and Tom Hornbein, a route so dangerous that few climbers have successfully followed in their wake, fifty years on.Tom Hornbein wrote a highly readable if low-key memoir of the climb, "Everest: The West Ridge", still in print. In it, Hornbein describes his and Unsoeld's early interest in an alternative to the South Col approach. The two climbers finally got their opportunity after Jim Whittacker and sherpa Nawang Gombu summitted, releasing resources for other climbers. With the assistance of sherpas and fellow climbers, Unsoeld and Hornbien managed to get enough supplies high enough for their summit try. Following a dangerous climb up the avalanche chute later known as the Horbein Couloir, the partners found themselves, finally, on top of the West Ridge in late afternoon. Judging a retreat back down their route to be near suicidal, they elected a death or glory try up and over the summit, with the frightening possibility of a high altitude bivouac if they were halted by darkness. This nicely packaged 50th anniversary edition, in beautiful coffee table-sized format, contains Horbein's original narrative, a new preface along with those used in earlier editions, a stunning collection of expedition photographs, and an afterword on the lives and fates of Horbein's fellow expedition members. A now retired Tom Hornbein grins happily from one of the endsheets, with a long career in medicine behind him and a few final thoughts to offer the reader on what it has meant to have climbed Everest. Very highly recommended.

Tom Hornbein's account of the first ascent of Mount Everest via the terrifyingly difficult West Ridge remains a classic of mountaineering literature; this reviewer is glad to see it still in print nearly 50 years after the event. Hornbien and his climbing partner, the legendary Willi Unsoeld, were members of the 1963 American Expedition to Everest, which put five Americans and a sherpa on top at a time when only half a dozen people were known to have reached the summit. "Everest: The West Ridge" is an account of the expedition, but it's really about the desire of Hornbein and Unsoeld to tackle an unclimbed and virtually unknown route.Hornbein and Unsoeld took an early interest in the possibilities of the previously untried West Ridge. With only a few grainy aerial photographs to go by, the two managed to work a short reconnaissance into the campaign to get Jim Whittacker and Nawang Gombu to the summit via the South Col route. Enough resources remained after that succcess for two more teams to make a summit attempt, including one via the West Ridge. There were difficulties with weather, supplies, and route-finding. In the end, Unsoeld and Hornbein found themselves, finally, high up on the West Ridge at three thirty in the afternoon, facing either a near suicidal retreat back down the steep and crumbling rocks of the West face, or a summit attempt that was very likely to end in darkness high on the mountain...Tom Hornbein was a skilled climber who happened to be a doctor and medical researcher. His somewhat clinical prose style won't necessarily appeal to the general reader. His narrative will be of interest to those who can appreciate the difficulties and risks involved in the West Ridge climb, including the death or glory decision to procceed on to the summit in late afternoon on that May day in 1963, risking an exposed bivouac in the death zone, or worse. To that audience, this book is very highly recommended.
