This is a great read. I didn’t know a thing about the Cuban revolution in 1959. Read like a novel and very informative and interesting

Lots of good information, well written, lots of action, keeps you interested

Full disclosure: Tony is a friend of mine. But I have other friends who've written books I didn't review here because I didn't love them (the books, not the friends!). Cuba Libre is a fantastic read. Tony asked me to look at it and consider writing a blurb. I figured I'd read a chapter or two, determine whether or not I could recommend it with a clear conscience, and then get back to my own work. Instead, I spent two days with my nose buried in this thing, absorbing the experience of being part of the Cuban revolution, hanging with Fidel and Che and the women they loved, tasting the food they concocted from what they could buy from grateful villagers, smell the tropical rain.... This is a book that pulses and breathes with unexpected insight, humor, and erudition. I can't recommend it highly enough.

For those who want to learn about the most unusual revolution to ever take place in the Western Hemisphere, you simply MUST get this book. The book is a fascinating, tumultuous journey with extraordinary detail, written with great humor as well. Rare archival photos of Che, Fidel and many others add to it and it's so compelling that I went without dinner because I couldn't put it down! If you have any remote interest in the Cuban Revolution you owe it to yourself to get this book. You will be rewarded with story telling that is truly mesmerizing.

What an enjoyable book. Even though I'm in my 50s I knew very little about Fidel, Che, and the Cuban Revolution. The author did a fantastic job telling this incredible story. I find with books like these that I sometimes have trouble keeping track of all of people mentioned, but the author wrote in such a way that each character stood out. Also, I loved the way the author reviewed Cuba’s history in the early part of the book, giving enough detail to set context but not slowing the book down with too much detail. As for the story of Fidel, Che, and the rebels, it was nothing short of astonishing. They were so outnumbered and they made so many mistakes, and yet they prevailed thanks to cleverness, charisma, commitment, and often, luck. I enjoyed learning about Fidel and Che as well as the women who participated in the Revolution. This book is a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at an incredible historical event.

Author does a great job of assembling even the minute facts and revealing the lack of any glory in the Cuban Revolt. It sounds like a group of stooges led by a bipolar leader who was terribly unprepared for any task at hand which resulted in the death , capture and torture of many loyal but ignorant followers. A Woodstock gone very wrong. One thing the author reveals is the awesome and misleading power the media offers in deluding the public and it's leaders. So relevant to today's political climate. The book is a telltail reveal it all on corruption that existed on both sides of the Cuban environment of the 50's. Such a terrible waste of life in the desire for money , power and control of the Cuban people.

A page turner of a history book that only Tony Perrottet could write. Cuba Libre fills an important gap in the history of Cuba. Hitherto there had been no accessible histories of the Cuban Revolution save for dry academic tomes. What Mr. Perrottet has given us is an entertaining read, a well-researched history, and an informative book that I devoured.

Part 1 How Clutter Invades Your Home, Your Body, and Your MindChapter 1THE HIDDEN FORCES THAT MAKE YOUR HOME A MESSImagine a team of future archaeologists carefully examining the remains of one of today's typical homes. Hundreds of years from now, what would they think of the objects piled up in our rooms? Would they understand why we let our belongings take over so much of the space in our homes? We don't have to wonder how archaeologists would interpret our early 21st- century homes. They're already trying to make sense of them now.Earlier in her career, UCLA professor Jeanne Arnold, PhD, did the kind of work that the word archaeology more often brings to mind: examining bits of material left behind by ancient Native Americans. More recently, though, she shifted her focus to a very different society: modern-day Southern Californians. As part of an extended study, she and a team of researchers made in-depth explorations into 32 homes. They carefully photographed the rooms, noted exactly what types of household possessions the families treasured, and observed in real time how the residents used their homes. She wanted to find out what leads so many people to pack so much stuff inside and, once they bring it in, what they do with all of it.All the families in these homes had kids. In all the homes, both parents worked. These were typical families with busy schedules and not a lot of time for cleaning and sorting. But Dr. Arnold and her colleagues didn't go out of their way to include homes that were especially cluttered. (They accepted families into the study without first seeing their homes.) Nor did they see evidence that the homeowners cleaned up before the team visited. They found that many of these homes were so crowded that some of the rooms couldn't be used for their intended purposes. In three-quarters of the houses, the garage was so packed with items like sports equipment, boxes of files, lumber, and plastic bins filled with clothing that the cars were parked outside. The garage was too full to hold them.Dr. Arnold and her team took nearly 20,000 photos in the homes, some of which ended up in a book that she co-authored about the project, Life at Home in the Twenty-First Century. One shows a shower stall where no one can bathe because it's stuffed knee-high with clothes. In another photo, no one can sit comfortably in front of the computer because the home office is so jammed with clutter. No one can relax on a couch because it's littered with stuffed animals. No one can sort laundry on top of the washer or dryer because they're covered with stacks of groceries.CLUTTER DEFINEDThe notion of "clutter" has different meanings. A household scene that looks like squalor to one might be "just a bit of a mess" to another. In this book, I'll use the word clutter a lot, and I'd like you to understand what I mean by this word.Dr. Jeanne Arnold, the archaeologist who explores the modern world, and I see eye to eye on the three factors that turn household objects into clutter:1. It's a lot of stuff. As you cast your eye around the room, it's hard to make sense of all the visual noise of colors and shapes. Merely owning an abundance of possessions doesn't necessarily mean that your home is cluttered, but it's a good start.2. It's out of place. Here's where clutter begins. If you see a fork in the middle of your floor, you know it doesn't belong there. That's because forks have a very specific home, and it's not on the floor. A pile of clothes in the shower (where a person belongs) looks like clutter. Cases of sodas on the washing machine (where clothes should temporarily go) become clutter.3. It's untidy."A beautifully arranged bookshelf with hundreds and hundreds of books doesn't look like clutter--it looks like a nice collection, right? Whereas if the books are all falling out of the bookcase and some of them are stacked and things are sticking out of the books, it starts to look like clutter, since it's not tidy," Dr. Arnold says. The totally uncluttered definition: Clutter is too much stuff scattered in the wrong place."Something like two-thirds of households had, based on a simple visual observation, an uncomfortable amount of stuff," she says. And by "uncomfortable," she means how an average visitor might feel upon entering the home. Most of the families living in these spaces, on the other hand, didn't seem to be too upset about the clutter around them or even to notice it."Many of the men in the households expressed no concern whatsoever about the untidy spaces or having lots of stuff. Moms more often commented on it, but only some of them commented on it using language that suggested that it caused them considerable stress," she said. But it's hard to be truly blissful, calm, and relaxed in an untidy environment. Psychologists on the team found signs that a cluttered house could pose a threat to a peaceful state of mind. Women whose homes were more stressful--based partly on their home's clutter levels--had a pattern of changes in their cortisol levels that showed more chronic stress. Their levels of depressed mood also increased over the day. When you truly need cortisol coursing through your system, it's great to have around. It shifts your body into a different mode--like shifting your car into a higher gear--so it's ready to fight or flee from an attacker. But long term, you don't want too much cortisol and other stress hormones flooding your system. Revving up your car for too long isn't good for the engine, and excess stress hormones in your system can, over time:Keep you from sleepingMake you feel sick to your stomachThrow off your mental focusHurt your heartMake you feel more anxious or depressedContribute to weight gainA cluttered house isn't a good enough reason to do this to your body and your mind. After many visits to messy homes, I've come to realize that clutter is a customary part of most families' lives and that many families have given up on trying to keep it under control. I've also learned that the accumulation of too much stuff in people's homes has more serious and negative effects on their lives than they realize. Clutter has:A financial impact:Take, for example, the father who traveled constantly for work. He was wracked with guilt because he rarely spent time with his children, so he bought them toys to make up for his absence. When I started working with the family, all their credit cards were maxed out and the huge plastic containers of untouched toys that filled their garage had long ago begun to spill out into their yard.An emotional impact:I met a mother who became obsessed with collecting plastic action figures and other memorabilia from a national restaurant franchise. Her 8- and 12- year-old daughters had never shared a family meal at the kitchen table because it was so cluttered with this stuff that they couldn't even see it.A social impact:A young mother couldn't say no to the offers of hand-me-down clothes from her family and friends. Once she had the clothes, she felt too guilty to part with them. With three children under the age of 6, her home was so packed with kids' clothing that she felt too embarrassed to have anyone in for a visit. She became increasingly isolated and depressed.A relationship impact:A couple collected "gifts" for family and friends, but never actually gave them away. Their surroundings were so cluttered that their grandchildren had never even visited their home. While many of the homes I visit are much, much worse than the homes in Jeanne Arnold's book, in all of them I find families that are stressed, less happy than they could be, and unable to live the kind of lives they'd like. They're drowning in too much stuff. When we talk about their surroundings, without exception these conversations dredge up powerful emotions like guilt, loss, regret, betrayal, worry, and anger. If your house is an overstuffed mess, I've learned that more often than not, it's a warning sign that you have some type of trouble--large or small- -in your mental and emotional well-being. In turn, a chaotic home that leaves little room for you and the other people inside can threaten your mental and physical health.Stuff that overfills a home is usually a symptom of some deeper, more significant issue that has not been addressed by an individual or the family. It's easy to be distracted by the stuff--but the real issue is never the stuff itself. As I often tell people, it's not about the clutter. My work is based largely around one simple yet powerful premise that I know to be true: You can't make your best choices, your healthiest choices, your most life-affirming choices in a cluttered, messy, disorganized house. You can argue with me as much as you want, but I can tell you with absolute certainty that it just doesn't happen. If you were to invite me into your home, and I were to see that it's packed full of objects that you don't truly need, use, or want--but can't get rid of--I would be concerned that:Your mind isn't as happy, relaxed, and focused as it could be.You are feeling overwhelmed by your possessions and unable to get them under control.Your weight is likely higher than you would like it to be.Your relationships with your spouse, kids, and other loved ones in your home aren't as strong as they could be.The stuff you own has become more important than your and your family's well-being.You simply don't know where to start making a change.Does this sound like a typical morning at your home? When you wake up, the very first thing your eyes see is a cluttered, messy bedroom, which immediately sets an unpleasant tone for your day. You get up and can't find the outfit you know is somewhere in your closet (thus starting your day with a failure). Your kids' homework has disappeared, you're out of milk for breakfast, and your car keys are nowhere to be found. You've had more frustration by 8 a.m. than some people feel all day. If this sounds like you, is it any surprise that you feel tense and on edge before you step out of the house?I can show you how each room in your home can drag down your happiness in its own special way.If your kitchen counters are cluttered and your drawers are overflowing with gizmos that you bought in a moment of culinary enthusiasm--but haven't used once--then you're not likely to cook a healthy meal that brings your family together. It's just too stressful an exercise. If your home office is such a mess that it keeps you from getting your finances in order, it's no surprise when stress, uncertainty, and fights about money disrupt your marital happiness and keep everyone in the home worried. The clutter in your house may be a cause of deeper personal and emotional issues in your life, and it will almost certainly contribute to stress within your family. This clutter can also directly affect your weight and serve as a warning light that you're making decisions that threaten your health.Since a cluttered home can so completely drag down a family's quality of life, why do so many people bring so much stuff into their homes, use it so little, and find it so difficult to let go? A more useful question might be: In today's society, how could people not do this?A Culture of ClutterIn the United States, consumer spending makes up about 70 percent of the nation's overall economic activity. The same is true in other developed countries: Of all the spending that goes on, everyday consumers account for most of it. As a result, the forces that run the place where you live--the government, big businesses, the media--keep a very, very close eye on whether you, the consumer, are spending enough.Did you catch that? The powers that be don't necessarily view you as a citizen, a voter, or a person. You're a consumer. You're someone who buys products, then consumes them. After you eat it, use it up, or wear it out, you buy more.As I sit at my desk writing this today, the headlines on my computer are very excited about how much Americans have been spending recently. "If You're Average, You'll Spend $98 Today," Time magazine tells me. The typical consumer spent $98 a day last month, pushing the average to its highest in 6 years. That doesn't count things like your mortgage, car payment, or utility bills. It's a measure of your purchases at places like coffee shops, convenience stores, department stores, and online retailers. If you're contributing to this daily flow of commerce, the newscasts will speak of you in glowing terms. Your neighbors may look at you with envy. But this spending, I fear, will continue to keep you overweight, overcluttered, and underhappy. This pressure for consumers--I mean people--to keep spending has been building since before you were born. Thousands of years ago, humans evolved in an environment of scarcity, says Peter Whybrow, MD. He's a psychiatrist at UCLA whose main interest these days is trying to figure out why people need to buy so much in the pursuit of happiness. Our ancient ancestors spent their time seeking the three things their brains told them to chase: food, shelter, and sex. At least two of these were typically hard to find. These primitive people spent a lot of time and energy chasing down a tasty animal to eat or looking for a safe place to spend the night. When they succeeded, their brains' reward centers released chemicals that made them feel happy and content. Another day as successful as that might not happen for a long time, Dr. Whybrow says.Even in the 1700s, when philosophers and economists were setting up the foundation of our free-market economy, even basic necessities were still scarce for most. "You can only harness your horse and go to the market once a week," Dr. Whybrow explains. "The constraints of work, the climate, the mountains, all of those things that constrained people were so dominant that they could never imagine the situation where we live now."Our economy was set up with the expectation that these constraints would always limit our ability to get our hands on food, clothing, and tools. So would our desire to not look greedy in front of our neighbors, says Dr. Whybrow, who covers these issues in his book American Mania: When More Is Not Enough.

After reading almost all of the most popular books on decluttering--including those by Marie Kondo, Joshua Becker and others--plus following a lot of decluttering blogs, I've been surprised to discover one of the absolute best is Peter Walsh's Lose the Clutter, Lose the Weight. The title turned me off for a while. It sounded gimmicky and silly. At its very best, however, the book is seriously devoted to helping overwhelmed, overweight people get a handle on emotional, spiritual and organizational ways to tackle clutter and poor eating, and get back on track. Smart, well-written, nonjudgmental, practical and empowering. A great gift to this category of books!

The three main points of the book are lose the clutter, lose the weight and use mindfulness to avoid malignant emotions, food and items in your life. Organizational guru Peter Walsh helped me think through changes I have been making and continue to make. "Somehow, at some point, you become too large for your comfort," he writes at the beginning. He also helps explain how stuff, emotions and eating are all related and not helping me get the life I want and deserve. I want a conversation with him on diet programs, although he gives a simple program and simple exercises. He even meddles with my finances and email, but all to my benefit. I am in the process of downsizing and his logic helps me divide my stuff into Zone One and Zone Two. Thank you, Peter, for nailing it!

Still reading it. I'm starting week #2 tomorrow which is decluttering the bedroom. Peter Walsh has great information, gives lots of encouragement and brings in experts for the diet and exercise portion and the mindfulness meditation. I'm doing my own diet right now, but I love how his is set up. You have so many healthy choices its not a diet, but being mindful about healthy food choices. The exercise portion is great if you don't have any equipment. I go to the gym, but the book offers good options. The parts on being mindful are incredibly helpful when dealing with cravings or emotional attachment to stuff. It has really changed the way I look at things. Going through my kitchen in week #1 was difficult at times, but also very rewarding. I have filled 3 kitchen garbage bags for the trash and put 3 boxes of items for a garage sale, or to give away. It is a great relief to have a vision for the spaces in my house and work to accomplish it. My house is not messy and it doesn't look cluttered, but inside my cupboards...holy Hannah! I have found things I'd forgotten about and never use. It feels great to make decisions about those things and move them out.So I'm off to week #2 for another cathartic experience!! I highly recommend this book!

I first saw Peter Walsh a few years ago on Oprah. She assigned him a 2-day slot on the show to help out a middle-aged couple who'd so filled their house with stuff they could hardly move. They couldn't use the kitchen so they ate out every night. She was a nervous wreck and every day was another shopping extravaganza. She bought presents for her kids and grandkids that they never received: it was all on the piles. Peter walked in and got busy. First, he explained some reasons they lived that way (if you can call it living) and reassured them he wasn't there to judge them but to help. After initial hesitation, they clung to the process for all they were worth--it was literally a life-line.Peter didn't do the usual taking every darn thing and asking if was important or meant something to them. That's designed for failure. Everything in our house is "good" and here for a reason, isn't it? He cleared out the whole house and put everything up for a one-weekend mega rummage sale. It filled an entire warehouse. The lady was so upset but became a blubbering mess when he led her to another room, an extra 50% of space which held her hundreds of pairs of shoes. They made $13,000 which indicates the size of their hoard. This man and woman had piled up so much junk on the bed it reached the ceiling: she slept cramped on about 10% of the space left and he slept on the couch. When Peter cleared out the whole bedroom, it was a shock: you couldn't see before that there were windows, 2 chairs and a fireplace!! The coup de grâce was when, after all this work, the man was presented with a huge box of papers: 35 years of gas bills. He sat down on the porch and began taking each one and opening it. Peter lost it: "Are you KIDDING me???" He made the man throw the whole box in the dumpster.Peter went back after a year to see if it "took," if the people had maintained the clarity and peace of the home. Yep. And, by gum, they looked thinner! So we see that Peter's methods work. He's also written these which are magnificent helps:It's All Too Much: An Easy Plan for Living a Richer Life with Less StuffIt's All Too Much Workbook: The Tools You Need to Conquer Clutter and Create the Life You WantLighten Up: Love What You Have, Have What You Need, Be Happier with LessThis book is set up in a natural manner:Part 1: How Clutter Invades Your Home, Your Body, and Your MindPart 2: The "Lose The Clutter, Lose The Weight" BlueprintPart 3: The Six-Week Program Begins:....Chapter 9: Week One: Your Cooking and Dining Areas...Chapter 10: Week Two: Your Bedroom...Chapter 11: Week Three: Your Bedroom Closet and Your Bathroom...Chapter 12: Week Four: Your Financial House...Chapter 13: Week Five: Your Living Areas (e.g. family room)...Chapter 14: Week Six: Your Storage Areas (e.g. basement)Chapter 15 is how to prevent all this work being a waste of time...to make these changes permanent.I have made a study of clutter since my home was always overrun with it for years. I started a discussion thread on the gold box forum 6 years ago and reading andposting on it has helped me make my cluttered house a cozy home. It's such a great thing to ask an unexpected guest in and not be embarrassed. I got the clutter out and now I'm happy. These 2 books also helped tremendously:The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and OrganizingOrganize & Create Discipline: An A-to-Z Guide to an Organized Existence (Hardback) - CommonBut I want to put Peter's words to the test: along with more clutter, can I get rid of a few pounds? I'll report back in a few weeks.

Lose the Clutter, Lose the Weight has helped me organize my kitchen, bedroom, and dinning room but, I have not followed the time line, I just work on it bit by bit at my own pace. The author's style, voice, and suggestions connect with me and I am able to donate or throw away stuff I have held onto to for decades. I have lost weight slowly and consistently but, I am on my own eating plan. I did take the author's advice to throw away food that is unhealthy and have not missed any of it. I am tired of diets. I eat whatever I want with the resolution that I make it from scratch from NON GMO and organic sources about 90% of the time. I try to abstain from packaged foods or fast food restaurants as much as possible.

This book is certainly giving me motivation! My husband and I started with the garage and back door, and we feel noticeably better when we get home and walk through! Just finished the kitchen and we're already eating more healthy and feeling really good about opening the fridge or pantry door. This is a real eye opener, for sure! We feel so much lighter, and have a little peace. I cannot wait to finish the entire house! Taking a load to the dump and throwing things in the garbage or giving away to the shelter really lifts a weight off of my spirit!

The minute I started reading Org Design for Design Orgs, I couldn't tear my eyes from it. It was almost 2am when I found myself in the middle of chapter 7, and had to talk myself into getting some sleep. This book was so rich with personable, practical advice on how build design culture that I felt like I was in a cozy fireside chat with a design mentor. It was like listening to stories from someone who has lived through it all. Someone who could relate and empathize deeply with the issues I'm facing with my design organization, and give smart, actionable advice on how to proceed forward.I’m a designer and researcher at a startup that has been through many ups and downs in the past 2 years. Our design team has struggled with getting design recognition and getting research to be valued and integrated. We've had designers hit career ruts and stunted growth, and have had friction with aligning with leadership. This book covered all these issues in well organized manner, supported by clear diagrams and real world stories. If you work on or with an in-house design team, this book is an ABSOLUTE must-read.This truly is the book I wish I had since the beginning of my design journey. It’s the book I would reference with, write proposals and plans with, wallow in sorrow with, get uplifted with hope with. It confronts the reality of being an in-house designer straight on. I always have it with me at work, showing highlighted sections to my design manager, to product managers and engineers. It’s not only a book that I know will be useful throughout my career in design, it’s the greatest design mentor I could ever ask for, always in my back pocket.

A thorough and readable treatise on the importance of design to today's organizations as well as a practical, actionable guide to implementation. Case for change plus change plan. What else do you need? Nothing but action!

Most business books contain a nugget or two of knowledge surrounded by two-three hundred pages of fluff. This is not one of those books. Peter provides a strong high-level argument for making design the center of your organization, then dives into exactly how to do so, covering everything from team organization to reporting structure, to day-to-day management advice. Whether you're in the weeds as a design practitioner or team leader or an executive at an organization that wants to be design-centric, you'll find value in this book.

Regardless of your title, if you manage a design team in any capacity read this book. Right now. It accounts for scale, business context, and vision in a quickly digestible manner. The authors are seasoned design professionals — to say the least — and tackle their subject matter with good humor, depth, and passion.

Wish I found this earlier

Very actionable content!

Unexpectedly helpful and solid book.

It gives you valuable insights on how to design a design organization! The book is too focused on product design organizations, so maybe a better approach might be focusing it on other areas, like how to be a design manager in an advertising environment.

IntroductionAh, the happy years before school, the carefree time before that dreaded day when the young child becomes, as Shakespeare put it:The whining school-boy, with his satchelAnd shining morning face, creeping like snailUnwillingly to school. For children who are ready for the school experience, kindergarten and first grade can be exceedingly happy and absorbing times. No creeping unwillingly for them! But that certainly isn’t true of children who are not ready. Usually they will not enjoy the challenging early years of schooling. And even their futures might be compromised, since researchers have determined that children who have fallen behind in first grade tend not to catch up academically. As a consequence, the educational importance of the early years, from 2 to 5, has become increasingly well-known by psychologists and policy makers, and recently by the general public. State legislatures are beginning to offer universal preschool programs, available to all children. What Parents Need to Know about School ReadinessDuring the past twenty-five years, however, there has been a barrier to effective preschooling, whether at home or at a school. That barrier has been a set of romantic ideas about early childhood, ideas that are widespread among some early-childhood experts and the general public. An American parent who picks up this book may have heard things like the following: that teaching pre-literacy and pre-math skills to preschoolers is unnatural, premature, and developmentally inappropriate; that such exposure distracts from healthier, more natural learning experiences; that it can be injurious to the child. These romantic ideas about early childhood have exerted a huge influence in American thought, but they are now thought by leading psychologists to be misleading and oversimplified. There is, in fact, great benefit and great fun to be gained by engaging young children in suitable educational activities. In the United States today, some children do come to school ready to learn; generally, they are fortunate enough to come from privileged and educated families that understand the importance of these early formative years and have the capability to make the most of them. Many, many other children, though, are not ready when they enter kindergarten. While they may come from loving and well-intentioned families, often their parents have neither the financial resources nor the free time to ensure that their children engage in educationally productive experiences, either at preschool or at home. These children enter kindergarten under a severe academic disadvantage. They do not know the words and things they need to know in order to thrive in kindergarten and first grade. They do not understand things that other children understand, and they fall further behind with each passing grade. Research on the Important Preschool YearsThe significance of this early disadvantage and its deleterious consequences cannot be overstated. One study (Hart and Risley, 1995) followed children from infancy through the elementary grades. Researchers meticulously examined everything that went on in the children’s homes during the early years, then evaluated the children during their preschool years, again in kindergarten, and in third grade. Here are some highlights of their findings:The number of words spoken to children throughout infancy and early childhood varied tremendously from family to family, and the amount of language children heard directly correlated to family income level. For example, children from the poorest families heard less language than children from working-class families. And children from both these groups heard far fewer words than children from families in which parents were professionals.Based on these findings, researchers were able to extrapolate that, by the time children entered school, those from the professional families would have accumulated experience with nearly 45 million words, while those from the poorest families would have had experience with only 13 million words—a 30-million-word gap! Not only was there a difference in the sheer number of words that children heard, but also in the variety and the complexity of the language heard. The number of words and the richness and complexity of the language that a child heard in his family setting, this study found, was predictive of the child’s own vocabulary and early academic skills when they were evaluated in preschool and the early grades. Briefly put, children who heard more words had more words in their own vocabulary. Furthermore, the children with stronger language skills learned to read more easily and effectively than the children with weaker vocabularies.Other studies (Jager-Adams, 1990) found that a child’s reading proficiency at the end of first grade is highly predictive of:• Reading ability in later grades• High school graduation• Financial income as an adultCombine the two studies, and you have the picture of how important school readiness is to a child’s future. Those children to whom parents read, speak, and present language describing the world of things and ideas begin school more ready to absorb all that they will be offered, and it promises to make a difference to them—and to their society—for the rest of their lives.Despite such findings, the record shows that the children of America are not getting the most out of the public education that this nation offers. Perhaps most staggering of all, reading proficiency tests administered nationally throughout the country have recently shown that as many as 78% of the children tested fall below the proficiency level at the fourth-grade level. This figure suggests that all families, not just those in dire poverty or with little education, could be doing better at helping their children enter kindergarten ready to learn. The good news is that we do know ways to prevent these dire consequences. Thanks to years of research, observation, and practice, we know what children need to learn and what experiences they should have before entering kindergarten. Now we just need parents and preschools to put this knowledge into practice. What is Core Knowledge?Core Knowledge is an educational program designed to provide a guided, direct, and effective way of providing all children the knowledge and skills that only the favored few have possessed in the past. The program has been developed over many years and with the contributions of many experts, under the auspices of the non-profit Core Knowledge Foundation, and all proceeds from the program go back to the foundation to help more and more parents and children. The Core Knowledge Foundation has developed educational guides from preschool through grade eight. The preschool program, on which this book is based, has been in use for over a decade among children from all social groups and in many settings across the country; it has been field-tested and refined over the years. The research evidence for its effectiveness is now overwhelming, and can be viewed at www.coreknowledge.org.The Core Knowledge School Readiness Program The Core Knowledge preschool program was developed after consulting the most distinguished developmental psychologists and observing the most effective practices throughout the world. The rationale behind the selectivity and sequence of the Core Knowledge materials, now well accepted, was first developed in my 1987 book, Cultural Literacy. Intrinsic to the Core Knowledge Preschool Program, whether for schools or for home, is its careful sequencing of social and academic skills, with a strong emphasis on the knowledge that is most useful and productive for children living in American society today. Granted, you will find plenty of other read-aloud books that are well illustrated and attractive individually. So what do the Core Knowledge preschool family materials have that others on the market do not have? Unlike other pre-kindergarten home education products, the Core Knowledge Home Preschool books are based on an overarching set of goals for learning at the preschool level, for children aged three through five. Only the Core Knowledge Home Preschool Program offers a package of readings and activities, totally coordinated to follow a cumulative sequence of essential knowledge and skills, derived from sound research. These readings and companion workbooks follow a month-by-month pattern that has been vetted by international researchers and tested over many years, with proved effectiveness. In this read-aloud book and the activity book materials accompanying it, you will find a coordinated set of simple and fun activities that family members can share with children, knowing that they are working together to get their children ready for kindergarten. There are already more than a thousand Core Knowledge preschool classes operating across the country, following exactly this sequence of lessons and activities. The number of Core Knowledge Preschools continues to grow rapidly as their rationale and efficacy become more widely known. We at the Core Knowledge Foundation believe that all parents should also be offered this opportunity to prepare their children for a happy, productive time in school—and for the rest of their lives.((From the ‘Songs” chapter))SongsYoung children seem to be irresistibly drawn to music. It is a form of communication, a means of creative expression, and an emotional outlet.Listening intently to music, children are sharpening their sense of hearing and paying attention to rhythms and harmonies that are fundamentally mathematical. What’s more, they enjoy music of all varieties.Look at preschooler faces and bodies when they are engaged in a musical activity. They convey eagerness and enthusiasm–in a word, the sheer fun of music! We encourage you to share a wide range of musical experiences with your child, from silly songs to classical symphonies. Lose your inhibitions (and concerns that you are not musically inclined). Sing songs together, listen to all kinds of music, have a parade, dance and enjoy!FingerplayOpen, Shut ThemModel this hand dance so your child learns to do it as you recite the poem together: For the first stanza open your hands flat or shut them into fists. For the second, walk your fingers up your chest to each part of your face. For the third, end up by covering your eyes; then peek out.Open, shut them, open, shut them,Give a little clap.Open, shut them, open, shut them,Put them in your lap.Creep them, creep them, creep them, creep them,Right up to your chin.Open wide your smiling mouthBut do not let them in.Creep them, creep them, creep them, creep them,Past your cheek and chin.Open wide your smiling eyes,Peeking in—Boo!Repeat first verse.

Revision: I have this three stars but now I'm giving it five. It really teaches you how to be a teacher to your child. This is a great book.Good stories if you want to pass along songs and poems and talk about a little history. My daughter goes to an advanced pre-school and I wanted to help her catch up. But this is nothing for helping your toddler excel in any areas taught to pre-schoolers.

I bought this book for myself, to help in preparing my young child for her educational future. She is currently 16 months old, and not going to be ready for kindergarten any time soon, of course. But I was hoping it would give me some "material" to use as a supplement for daycare. As it turns out, she is fascinated by this book. She knows where it has been stashed, will point for it, and will sit for an hour in my lap to read it. (No joke.) I like the nursery rhymes and finger play songs because they remind me of my own childhood. (Do most kids even know nursery rhymes these days?)She has her favorites, and will point at them to do them repeatedly. She aslo knows several of the movement songs.Shes not interested in the history, art or story parts of the book. She will look at the animals in the nature section.I'm not sure that this book will be as interesting to most toddlers her age, but it is great for parents to look ahead and start working some of this material into their repertoire so that it comes naturally and isn't forced.I liked the history section, because I might not have known what type of history was important for a preschooler. I don't recall knowing much history before about 4th grade. (I did grow up during the cold war, and distinctly remember several historical events, but not actually leaving about US history, MLK, etc like are in this book.)I expect we'll buy the next book in this series, as she has recently started preschool, and seems to have no end to her desire to read and learn.

This is just a collection of stories to read your child. It does not include any ideas for extension activities or hands on learning. There is no suggested reading guide or lesson plan. You’ll have to plan all that out yourself. There are a few talking points for the parent in the margins, but that’s really it.I don’t understand the hype around this series. If you have basic workbooks, a library, and Little Baby Bum music you can do better than this book. The small picture study/art section in the back is nice.

It has poems, songs, history, art. Many of it is the generalized/stereotypical stuff but, it is pretty much what you would expect as being taught in your standard school. It was fun to go through some of the songs and poems as a family. We laughed and sang together. It brought back memories and we shared them with the kids.Tonight we read some of the stories! The pictures are Bright, colorful and the book can be enjoyed by you and your kiddos.

My daughter's not in preschool yet (we can't afford it, plus she's not potty trained yet) and I wanted a guide to help her learn while she's home with me (we read a lot, but can get in a rut). The book is nicely divided into sections for songs, poems, science, history, etc. and it's easy to segue into activities from many of the passages. She's learned a lot of songs and rhymes (that I had forgotten about)and it's inspired me to get more poetry and nursery rhymes from the library. A CD might be something to consider for later editions, because if you don't know the tune of the song, nursery rhyme or fingerplay you're kind of stuck. I'll probably buy the curriculum from the Core Knowledge Foundation that you can get to compliment this reader, because I'm also interested in knowing what skills she should be working on. I'm considering homeschooling, and so far, I like what I've seen of this "system".

Very good book but mostly just stories to read to my child, I have most of the stories already. I hoping that there are more lesson type plans in the higher grades. But overall it's a good but for anyone with a limited amount of books to read to their child.

I went back and forth a lot before buying this - there were some mixed reviews. Overall, I'm happy with the purchase. I am familiar with almost all of the selections here from my own childhood. Several reviews mentioned they thought the book was worthless because you can just google all of this on your own...well that may be, but if you have a preschool aged child (or in my case, TWO and a baby) who has time to do that? It's so nice just having all of these selections right there and ready to go.The pictures are great, both of my kids love looking through the book and picking out what they want to hear that day (or just making up their own stories and poems to go with the pictures). There a few selections that we will probably skip over, but for the most part I'm happy with everything I see. One small disappointment is the back of the book where it is said that a home is not a school and it is implied that homeschooling is in some way inferior or inadequate. I was really surprised (and offended) to read this in a book that was recommended by a homeschool curriculum site. Regardless of this statement, I still like the book and plan on using it regularly with my two preschoolers. It would be nice if they had included the music for some of the songs - there were a few I was unfamiliar with and I have had to look up youtube videos to know how to sing them.

This has a little bit of everything in it! It's kinda like an encyclopedia for Pre-k'ers! Like, it's to read and discuss with your kid, not just a parental guide. I thought it might duplicate some of the other things we have and for us it didn't at all. It's got sings, poems, art, history, science, and stories to read to! A great little book of everything!

I have long wanted to learn to study the scriptures in the original languages. Mounce's "Basics of Biblical Greek" is allowing me to do just that. I am using the text book as a self-study tool and after trying numerous Greek language texts, this book is helping me make my dream a reality. Each chapter builds upon the last, to steadily increase your vocabulary and understand the construction of the Greek language. Although there is some memory work required, Bill Mounce has reduced this to the bare essentials. This in no way hinders the student from learning Greek in any way. The Paradigms are constructed is such a way that it has been relatively easy to handle the memory work of each chapter. I would recommend this text book to anyone who is serious about learning New Testament Greek on your own. The author also maintains a website with study guides, vocabulary, chapter overviews and lectures that you can subscribe to for a very reasonable cost. I've taken this route and it is much like sitting in on his class lectures, with the benefit of a pause button. Again, as I've said, I've tried learning Greek with other text books and I can say, "I'm further along in my studies now than ever before." Thank you Mr. Mounce!

I cannot comment on quality of teaching approach, however this 2009 3rd edition ("Printed in China") is of such very low quality reproduction that I suggest avoiding it. Paper is cheap, ink is cheap, errors in placement of headings (such as in "Appendix: Words by Frequency.") Reproduction largely gray-on-gray, with poor layout featuring unnecessarily small type and unnecessarily large, unused margin space. Of course not "printed" at all, but a very low quality photocopying reproduction process - this book is an experience in eye-strain, even in very good natural light. Disappointing! I would return it, but unfortunately highlighted a couple of things in first few pages. In contrast, the companion "Workbook," 3rd edition, 2009 ("Printed in the United States of America") is higher quality paper, ink and layout -- very usable and readable. Zondervan, take note on production choices!Mentioned at beginning of book are online resources, some free including free flash card section. These sound potentially promising.Having extracted pages with resource references, I have now directed text to its highest and best use: the recycling bin.I am educated in linguistics with command of half a dozen languages including Hebrew, and wanted a concise, well presented Greek text. Will look again. This is clearly directed at a young classroom audience without a lot of background.

I am 72 years old and have had trouble memorizing materials for several years. So, I was concerned about studying a language, particularly one as unfamilar to me as Greek. However, because of my strong personal interest in biblical studies, I decided to spend some time learning the basics of the Greek language.I explored several products, and decided to try Bill Mounce's basic program in biblical Greek. At first, I only looked at the textbook "Basics of Biblical Greek--Grammar". I soon found out that Bill Mounce has several products about biblical Greek, but the materials are all intertwined. He even has a website with additional learning opportunities. The product I am reviewing here is a 'workbook' that can be used with the textbook 'Basics of Biblical Greek'. I would recommend that a person not purchase this workbook unless they own the textbook. This workbook contains exercises to assist the student in learning biblical Greek, and is dependent on having access to materials in the textbook. It is 'old school' like when I was in grade school and used a workbook to complete exercises in my English class. The individual pages are perforated along the edge and can be torn out, worked, and placed in a three-ring binder for storage. To date, I haven't torn any pages out of my book. I just write on them and leave them intact. The book begins with exercises on the 'alphabet', 'breathing marks', punctuation, and syllabification. The book then moves to chapters on nouns and the use of definite articles, prepositions, adjectives, and personal pronouns. Chapters on verbs and their tenses follow those on nouns. While the student is learning these basic tools of the language, there are exercises to complete on pronunciation and vocabulary. There are even 'reviews' which the student can utilize as a 'quiz' to grasp their retention of the material. There are reading and translation exercises from the Bible throughout the workbook, and they begin immediately. In Exercise 4 on pages 4-5 of the workbook, the student is given an exercise to read twelve verses in Greek from First John 1:5-2:5.This workbook is a study aid for learning Greek. Don't buy it to just read. Buy it only if you are serious about learning the language. I personally like this workbook. The exercises are easy to understand, and they provide me with the opportunity to do something everyday in the language. This enhances my memory of the material and lets me make it part of my lifestyle. I try to spend at least 30 minutes, five days a week working through the exercises in this workbook. I have completed several of the exercises dozens of times. Learning a language for me is all about consistentcy and repetition and persistence.By the way, learning basics of Greek has enhanced my Bible study immensely.

I recently had to pass a Greek entrance exam to get into a Bible program. I started out with the 1st edition, and the 1st workbook (1993). I did not get very far before I switched to the 2nd edition and workbook (2003). The answers to the 2nd edition (and the 3rd) are available online. There is no way that I know of to check your answers from the 1st edition. Make sure you know what edition you are purchasing! That said, the workbook is absolutely essential to learning Greek. Reading the textbook is one thing, putting it into practice parsing and translating is another. Using the workbook was where learning Greek became a delight. Familiar verses were seen in brand new light as I was forced to translate them from the original. Nuances and emphases shone forth as I worked on my homework. You are learning Greek in order to dig deeper into the Bible. The workbook exercises are predominantly (not exclusively) Bible verses, and this gives you a taste of what's to come.Working through the textbook and this workbook was a joy - and I passed my test! on to intermediate...
