I have long wanted to learn to study the scriptures in the original languages. Mounce's "Basics of Biblical Greek" is allowing me to do just that. I am using the text book as a self-study tool and after trying numerous Greek language texts, this book is helping me make my dream a reality. Each chapter builds upon the last, to steadily increase your vocabulary and understand the construction of the Greek language. Although there is some memory work required, Bill Mounce has reduced this to the bare essentials. This in no way hinders the student from learning Greek in any way. The Paradigms are constructed is such a way that it has been relatively easy to handle the memory work of each chapter. I would recommend this text book to anyone who is serious about learning New Testament Greek on your own. The author also maintains a website with study guides, vocabulary, chapter overviews and lectures that you can subscribe to for a very reasonable cost. I've taken this route and it is much like sitting in on his class lectures, with the benefit of a pause button. Again, as I've said, I've tried learning Greek with other text books and I can say, "I'm further along in my studies now than ever before." Thank you Mr. Mounce!

I cannot comment on quality of teaching approach, however this 2009 3rd edition ("Printed in China") is of such very low quality reproduction that I suggest avoiding it. Paper is cheap, ink is cheap, errors in placement of headings (such as in "Appendix: Words by Frequency.") Reproduction largely gray-on-gray, with poor layout featuring unnecessarily small type and unnecessarily large, unused margin space. Of course not "printed" at all, but a very low quality photocopying reproduction process - this book is an experience in eye-strain, even in very good natural light. Disappointing! I would return it, but unfortunately highlighted a couple of things in first few pages. In contrast, the companion "Workbook," 3rd edition, 2009 ("Printed in the United States of America") is higher quality paper, ink and layout -- very usable and readable. Zondervan, take note on production choices!Mentioned at beginning of book are online resources, some free including free flash card section. These sound potentially promising.Having extracted pages with resource references, I have now directed text to its highest and best use: the recycling bin.I am educated in linguistics with command of half a dozen languages including Hebrew, and wanted a concise, well presented Greek text. Will look again. This is clearly directed at a young classroom audience without a lot of background.

I am 72 years old and have had trouble memorizing materials for several years. So, I was concerned about studying a language, particularly one as unfamilar to me as Greek. However, because of my strong personal interest in biblical studies, I decided to spend some time learning the basics of the Greek language.I explored several products, and decided to try Bill Mounce's basic program in biblical Greek. At first, I only looked at the textbook "Basics of Biblical Greek--Grammar". I soon found out that Bill Mounce has several products about biblical Greek, but the materials are all intertwined. He even has a website with additional learning opportunities. The product I am reviewing here is a 'workbook' that can be used with the textbook 'Basics of Biblical Greek'. I would recommend that a person not purchase this workbook unless they own the textbook. This workbook contains exercises to assist the student in learning biblical Greek, and is dependent on having access to materials in the textbook. It is 'old school' like when I was in grade school and used a workbook to complete exercises in my English class. The individual pages are perforated along the edge and can be torn out, worked, and placed in a three-ring binder for storage. To date, I haven't torn any pages out of my book. I just write on them and leave them intact. The book begins with exercises on the 'alphabet', 'breathing marks', punctuation, and syllabification. The book then moves to chapters on nouns and the use of definite articles, prepositions, adjectives, and personal pronouns. Chapters on verbs and their tenses follow those on nouns. While the student is learning these basic tools of the language, there are exercises to complete on pronunciation and vocabulary. There are even 'reviews' which the student can utilize as a 'quiz' to grasp their retention of the material. There are reading and translation exercises from the Bible throughout the workbook, and they begin immediately. In Exercise 4 on pages 4-5 of the workbook, the student is given an exercise to read twelve verses in Greek from First John 1:5-2:5.This workbook is a study aid for learning Greek. Don't buy it to just read. Buy it only if you are serious about learning the language. I personally like this workbook. The exercises are easy to understand, and they provide me with the opportunity to do something everyday in the language. This enhances my memory of the material and lets me make it part of my lifestyle. I try to spend at least 30 minutes, five days a week working through the exercises in this workbook. I have completed several of the exercises dozens of times. Learning a language for me is all about consistentcy and repetition and persistence.By the way, learning basics of Greek has enhanced my Bible study immensely.

I recently had to pass a Greek entrance exam to get into a Bible program. I started out with the 1st edition, and the 1st workbook (1993). I did not get very far before I switched to the 2nd edition and workbook (2003). The answers to the 2nd edition (and the 3rd) are available online. There is no way that I know of to check your answers from the 1st edition. Make sure you know what edition you are purchasing! That said, the workbook is absolutely essential to learning Greek. Reading the textbook is one thing, putting it into practice parsing and translating is another. Using the workbook was where learning Greek became a delight. Familiar verses were seen in brand new light as I was forced to translate them from the original. Nuances and emphases shone forth as I worked on my homework. You are learning Greek in order to dig deeper into the Bible. The workbook exercises are predominantly (not exclusively) Bible verses, and this gives you a taste of what's to come.Working through the textbook and this workbook was a joy - and I passed my test! on to intermediate...
