Read this for my book club that is focusing on "cultural differences" this year. From that standpoint, this was a good selection as I learned a lot about the turmoil in India from the 1940's to 1970's when the main characters were coming of age. As other reviewers note, one brother escapes the turmoil by moving to the USA for his PhD, setting off his own conflict between his Indian culture and that of the US. The younger brother stays in India and becomes a revolutionary activist. But it's also a story about family conflicts and devotion.Of note, the author/editor chose to publish the book without quotation marks to indicate when a character was speaking. Some readers found this distracting, but it wasn't for me.I did enjoy the book and the author's style of story telling

THE LOWLAND REVIEWJhumpa Lahiri has moved to the front of my favorite author list after reading “The Lowland.” I’m fickle with my favorite authors so how long she remains there is dependent on what I read next. The fact remains that she’s a remarkable writer and has captured me with this magnificent novel.A researcher, cautious and reliable Subhash, relocates from India to America, and his younger sibling, rash and idealistic Udayan, is assassinated as a political activist in Calcutta. Subhash marries the widow, Gauri, who is carrying his brother’s child, to remove her from the brothers’ disapproving parents who are creating an oppressive environment for her. The ensuing years are chronicled as Subhash attempts to quiet the reverberations that affect all members of his family, although his efforts are mostly ineffective. His relationship with his niece, and stepdaughter, Bela, is a captivating episode of love and acceptance, but family members generally go their separate ways, each carrying their own bag of ashes.This story of two brothers with very different approaches to life is largely joyless but it does not leave an aftertaste of depression. The lives of the characters steadily progress with hints that something pleasant might happen, a hypnotic writing style that keeps reader involved. Disappointment, unfulfilled dreams, secrecy, and many deaths inhabit this lengthy novel but the ending, in just a few pages, brings the story to a tranquil closure.Lahiri touches senses and allows descriptive passages to be felt rather than read. She describes rain as both a feeling and a sound. “The roof of the cottage was as thin as a membrane, the pelting sound of the rain like an avalanche of gravel.” Recollections of seaside cottages are nostalgically gathered. “He pulled… into the driveway, bleached shells crackling under the tires as he slowed to a stop.” And sleepless nights are relived. “He longed for sleep, but it would not immerse him; that night the waters he sought for his repose were deep enough to wade in, but not to swim.”Several generations pass and the reader is carried along by the author’s mesmerizing story. It is written crisply in brief and succinct language. There are no lengthy, soaring flights of inner thoughts with obscure meanings. Relationships are clear and believable. The dialogue is easy to follow although the author doesn’t use quotation marks, but I don’t miss them. As mentioned, the author’s talent for drawing the reader into the story and allowing action to be felt, rather than simply directing eyes over words on a page, creates a glorious experience.As I end the book I have a curious thought. If Lahiri can write a book of sadness with such skill and poignancy, how might she present one of light heartedness and wondrous experiences? Such a beautiful book. The writing is lovely, the characters are real and complex and dealing with complicated and often sorrowful situations. Even so, we are left with hope for the future. Ms. Lahiri's preference for avoiding quotation marks around the dialogue threw me for a bit at first, but I was able to go with it pretty quickly until I didn't really notice it. I enjoyed the opportunity to learn about Indian history, and politics, and what America looks like through an immigrant's eyes. For me it also underscored that at our core, humans crave many of the same things—to be free, to be respected, to be heard, to be important to someone else. Highly recommended.

It’s hard to know where Jhumpa Lahiri is going with her novel, THE LOWLAND. It’s about two brothers who were born fifteen months apart, but were often mistaken for each other. Both are good students, but one is conservative and the other is a revolutionary.Subhash, the older one, and Udayan, were born in North Calcutta. Lahiri shows them fashioning a putter into an all-purpose club and sneaking into the exclusive golf course near where they live. Her point seems to be that India hasn’t changed much since independence. You still have the haves and the have nots. Strangely she never uses the word “Untouchable.” Not that the boys are poor; their parents are sort of upper middle class, just not rich enough to belong to the club.Matters come to a head when the Naxalite (communist) movement entices Udayan, and he is introduced to Gauri, a friend’s sister, whom he marries in defiance of his parents. In the India of the time, the late sixties and early seventies, parents chose their children’s spouses. Subhash would never have done that, but he does decide to attend a college in Rhode Island to study some sort of oceanography, where he picks up some American habits.Ultimately Udayan pays with his life and Subhash goes home to console his parents. They act like he's not there. He disapproves of the way they treat Gauri, rather like a servant girl, and he decides to marry her and take her back to America with him. This is really where the story starts. Gauri is pregnant with Udayan’s child. She’s also been studying philosophy and Subhash does everything in his power to help her achieve her goals in that respect, despite the child. Remarkably the baby seems drawn more to her “father” than her birth mother.I had a bit of a problem with Gauri’s behavior. She’s inappreciative; she can’t form a normal mother/daughter bond with her own child. I know we can’t help how we feel, but one would think being saved from life as a servant girl would have more of a psychological impact, whether sexual or only platonic. But apparently, as an author, Lahiri needs this to happen. Despite this, her objective, journalistic approach doesn’t provide much of a tone. And what is she saying about Udayan? Is he responsible for the unhappiness most of the characters go through because he wanted to help poor people? There’s no denying matters would have been quite different if Udayan had lived. Or is she saying that it doesn’t matter where the traumatic incident happened, that we’re all influenced by our families, and that they set the course of our lives?

My niece love it

Horrible graphics! Looks like someone printed it out from their computer with a bad printer and bound it together. Doesn't actually teach you anything either.

Nice book. Ordered for my second grader. He likes it with the only complaint of the characters don’t really look like the game. I can’t tell the difference.

Each picture has 3 steps to draw. Not enough instruction for my son to figure it out.

This book is exactly what you see on the cover. I think the instructions dont have enough steps, but its ok. At least it was cheap.

Matt Kepnes (1) gave a short but very informative interview in the New York Times about travel, which (2) drew me to his blog, which seems current, lively, and useful, so I figured I'd (3) take a chance and invest in his travel book. Well, two out of three ain't bad...I guess.I was surprised that the advice in the book was so elementary. Join frequent flyer clubs, get a credit card that is affiliated with one or more of the clubs to maximize points, consider staying at a youth hostel, use secondary airports, search the internet for cheap airline prices. Before you bid for travel on Priceline or Hotwire, check the internet for information that people post about their own bid history. Very little that I haven't already read several times somewhere else.Also, the thrust of the book was surprising to me. I'm an older (60+) occasional traveler, who considers the watch-out-for-the-hidden-fees world of travel costs to be alternately frustrating and scary, and I'm looking for protection. This book appears to be written for the youthful, carefree, sell-all-your-stuff-and-wander-the-world-for-a-year-or-more backpacking crowd. I really don't need a lot of advice about how to pare my possessions down to the minimum, and get rid of the stuff I don't need. Frankly, I love all my stuff -- PARTICULARLY the stuff I don't need!I would recommend taking advantage of Kepnes's well-written blog, and pass on this book.

I was all set to go on a 32-day trip to Iceland, Greece and Rome next month and was about to book my flights through Google Travel. I got a great price from Manila to Reykjavik but was puzzled about how to get the best (read cheapest) flights within Europe. Then I encountered this book.I was skeptical about buying this book because I'm a well, "veteran" cheapo traveller. But I saved several hundred dollars instantly when I read about the various websites that Mr. Kepnes talked about in his book (specifically the ones that consolidate the low-cost airlines - not found in google travel). And over the next few days of booking accommodations, I continued saving. Well to be fair, the several hundred dollars savings was for me and four other friends - but still!What a great book - excellent tips, well written and easily digested. I wish I had written such a useful book. The cost of the book is insignificant compared to what you would save even if you are a solo traveller so don't hesitate to get this book.Full disclosure: I'm not related to Mr. Kepnes and paid full price for the kindle edition of the book.

There's a lot of "traveling the world" blogs around Internet, and the tips on this book are likely among all of them, but the specific tips for every region of the world really worth the time (and money) you invest in the book.The only missing part is Mexico, but still is a great resource for advice about traveling gig the world.

I borrowed the book through the library first before I bought it. I can only recommend the book. It is well written and has well organized chapters where I could find the needed information easily. It wetted my appetite for future travel and gave me ideas what country to explore next.

I bought this book because I am about to embark on a 6 month adventure and figured I could use some tips.At first I was worried that this would be a little too American centric. As a Canadian, many of the same financial tips do not exist up here in the north. The currencies are all in USD, which isn't that big of a deal because our dollars are very similar. I was more worried about financial advice. As it turns out, in addition to providing in-depth advice for the American audience, Matt also provides alternatives to Canadians, Australians and Brits which I was very excited about. Although the advice isn't as detailed, it's still nice to have a reference of where we can find more information.This book is essentially written in two parts. Pre-departure information such as backpacks, banking, buying tickets, finding accommodations is all contained in the first half. The second half is dedicated to specific areas of the world and goes into detail of things to do, how to save money and more. I found this part very interesting and I have added destinations to my trip that I would not have thought of going to.Keep in mind the core of this book is about managing your finances on the road, rather than trip planning - but this book is a must have for Backpackers!

Starting immediately where Friedman's "US Submarines Through 1945" left off, this book traces the breathtaking pace of the evolution of American submarine submarine design, tactics, weapons, and electronics during the Cold War. As with the other books in the "Illustrated Design History" series, it relies heavily on previously classified documents to give the reader a detailed "behind the scenes" insight to the design of these vessels, and how they fit into the overall scheme of American defense policy.The key word here is detail - lots and lots of detail. Every paragraph and photo caption is thick with it, as are the 24 pages of technical notes, and the numerous drawings by the author and James Christley. Numerous paper projects and unbuilt weapons and systems are described, as well as just about every sonar and sensor system installed aboard American submarines between 1945 and 1995. This book is stripped and lean; there aren't wondering tangents to be found here. It's a technical history through and through and doesn't pretend to be anything else.Although I'd recommend this book to anyone seriously interested in submarine design, it's not for the faint of heart. It's "only" 280 pages long, but those 280 pages are incredibly dense and rich. I'd seriously recommend reading Friedman's "Submarine Design & Development" and Polmar's "Cold War Submarines" before tackling this work. Still, this an excellent book for the hardcore submarine buff, who will delight in all the unclassified details not readily found anywhere else. If only Friedman and the USNI would publish a revised and updated edition so people wouldn't have to spend $70 for a used copy...

Like Friedman's other books on US warship design, his description of the play between evolving doctrine, organizational imperatives and technical issues to arrive at each class of submarine gives the reader insight not just in what a ship became but also _why_ a ship became. I was a plank owner (original crew) of a SSN-637 class submarine in the early seventies. It was fasinating to see _why_ my ship was built and what her predecessors and successors became. Being interested in Naval Science without being a professional practitioner, Friedman's book hits just the right level of technical detail. This is _not_ a buff book. It is a serious effort to document the design evolution of (mostly) nuclear submarines.

I love how it has so much details of events that happened. When it came in the mail product looked good, no bents or folds. Would recommend.

In a conversational, yet professional, tone, the author takes us through an intriguing overview of world history. His knowledge and enthusiasm for his topics are much appreciated.

Very boring.

Very consice. A great overview of major events. But it has a few problems.... the author falls victim to a common problem of historians - he has injected his own philosophy onto certain events instead of clearly stating them as they are. An example of this is where he paraphrased the US Bill of Rights, and completely revised the intention of the 10th amendment so is reads as he'd like it to, rather than what it actually says. Another issue with the book is that one gets lost geographically when the author uses old place names instead of current. A map here and there would really add to understanding. An example is Mesopotamia - it's location is vaguely described once, and thereafter we are left to either try to remember, or seek out a map elsewhere.

For the amount of pages, humanity's history is succinctly covered. The author's writing was sometimes amateur in tone.

I don't sell insurance, but I was recommended this book by a man who does. For ten bucks you get fifty ways to illustrate Income Protection insurance on the back of a napkin. Some of these illustrations are different approaches to selling Income Protection insurance, some are how to sell to employers, business owners, wealthy people, and even people that are already covered by their group Disability Insurance.There is even an illustration on convincing someone to sell Income Protection Insurance (on page 50-51). My favorite napkin illustration is on page 8-9. In less than a minute it becomes brain dead obvious that you want what Income Protection insurance will do for you. That one illustration qualifies you as a prospect, and takes you right up to the close....as most others do as well. These illustrations are usually a few words, and maybe a few amounts of money. There is no illustrating skill needed. Any piece of paper or napkin will do.The reason I was recommended this book is to put my mind to how I could use the same format...the same concept (short illustration of a pointed question) to sell just about anything.If you sell Income Replacement insurance, this book is an obvious essential. But no matter what you sell, products or services, yo can adapt this concept and be able to present your idea anywhere, any time, and to anyone.

This book is a fast read and provides some great sales ideas. A must read if you plan on providing the risk management that your client needs.
