Really well-written and easy to understand. On top of that, the topics in this book are incredibly interesting and are things that are very important to understand how people behave today, and even how they will behave in the future.

I must admit, even though I'm definitely an admirer of Akerlof's work, I was fairly skeptical of this book going into it. I figured it was worth the quick read. Well, my skepticism turned out to be misplaced. The book is well-written, clear, and makes its case quite convincingly. After reading it, it was difficult not to concede that mainstream economics needs to put at least some more thought into assessing the role of identity in people's decisions. The book does a nice job of explaining how identity is different from other more common economic theories of people's behavior (asymmetric information, repeated games of cooperation, Becker-style tastes in the utility function), and how it is capable of capturing many important and difficult-to-explain situations that are observed in the real world. Hopefully, the profession will take the book and its suggestions seriously and push research in that direction.

This book did a good job explaining the effects of identity in today’s economy. It was a good read and explained very well why people act in certain ways. I felt that it could have gone more in to detail, though. I felt the examples were a good way to explain it, like the children in the carousel, but overall it felt slow.

The authors identify this field as nascent and so the book contains only hints of how far this approach can be taken. I don't think it is over stating the case to say America and much of the world is in an identity economics recession. The kind of validation the book describes as on par with monetary compensation has become harder and harder to come by. Once one accepts that there are other purposes to our economy besides maximizing individual life style then most of traditional economics falls apart. The book barely scratches the surface on the possibility that identity utility function, not purchasing power, is the main driver of our economy.

Brilliant. Akerlof and Kranton convincingly challenge the economic assumption "De Gustibus Non Disputandem" (per Gary Becker) --- that tastes are a given, outside the province of economics. An easy and insightful read.

This book is correct in what it is proposing, but it comes across as an article that was lengthened and published as a book to try and make more money out of the concept.Disclosure: I am earning my Masters in Health Administration as well as my Masters in Business Administration. I read books on behavioral economics, business, strategy, and crowds.Content: The authors did not find good examples for their argument. Their arguments are loosely built and poorly reinforced. I have read other books (likeSwitch: How to Change Things When Change Is Hard) that bring up some of the main concepts of this book but with better arguments and in a more enjoyable and convincing manner.Writing style: This book was written like an article -- very, very dry. The authors sound pompous and fail to engage the reader. I could not wait to finish this book.Overall recommendation: I really wish I could have given this book less than 3 stars, but I had to give some credit where credit is due. Identity economics is real, and the authors should get credit for recognizing and promoting it, but I suggest reading a different book if you want to know more about it.

Very readable and approachable book. It so nice that Economics is beginning to see the effects of culture in their work. Great read.

Add bell pepper and jalapeno pepper. Cook, stirring frequently, then add tomatoes and simmer for 30 minutes. Add mushrooms and tomato paste, cook until the sauce is thickened, about 10–15 minutes.

A good recipe book providing recipes using old fashioned Dutch or French ovens, cooking with coals, which could be adjusted to rough campfire type cooking with charcoal or wood, or eliminating that rustic cooking method to propane or gas, or even electric. A great rudimentary recipe book to have in a extended camping situation or facing another extended time of a storm bringing down the power grid in your area. I will use it to provide basic recipes which will be amended to what ever cooking method--coal, charcoal, wood, propane, gas, or electric I choose to use.

I've only tried a couple of the recipes so far, but having cooked with Bill and tasted the food he makes, I know what a great cook he is and what excellent dishes he prepares! I purchased 2 cookbooks, one for myself and one as a gift. My husband and I enjoy Dutch oven cooking AND Cajun foods, so this was a perfect addition to our cookbook collection. The 2nd book was purchased for someone who is not a Dutch oven cook, but as stated by other reviewers, Bill tells how to prepare the recipes in the kitchen, as well as outside over the coals. I look forward to trying all (or at least most) of Bill's recipes!

I don't generally endorse anything, but this is a good cookbook and I recommend it to all of you! I've known Bill for over 25 years and so far his food hasn't killed me,lol! I've had several of the dishes in this book and they are great. You've got to try the Blueberry Sausage Breakfast on page 27, it's the best thing for a one pot breakfast. I don't own a Dutch oven, so I use a Paula Dean chicken fryer with a lid instead. PS: It's also sold by Amazon.

For me, there were not too many useful recipes. Also, there were not many recipes in the book. I have not made anything using this book yet.

Bill, a friend of mine, spells out in a simple manner the art of Dutch oven cooking. His recipes cover a pleasant range from simple to somewhat complex and all are delicious.

The author, Bill Ryan, hit a home run with this Cajun, Dutch oven cook book. Easy to follow recipes and wonderful results. Lots of Dutch oven cookin' hints too. Best appreciated by someone that has some Dutch oven experience.

Nice and simple book with simple recipes but a bit on the small size. I will be trying s few of the recipes in it.

That was the first-hand, sensitively wrought narrative of a man surviving 76 days at sea alone in a life raft. This story, as the unimaginative title suggests, is about the longest documented survival of someone adrift at sea. That someone happened to be a wily but illiterate fisherman from Mexico, whose tale is reconstructed retrospectively by a journalist. There is a tangible loss to time and translation. The author tries hard to paint a sympathetic portrait of the survivor, Salvador Alvarenga. But the elephant in the life boat is that he didn’t start his journey alone. Somewhere along the way, his young, inexperienced mate Ezequiel perished.I vividly recall the day in 2014 Alvarenga appeared on television to the world, looking surprisingly well-nourished. It is explained in detail here how he was able to sustain himself, but the obvious spectre of cannibalism is never directly confronted nor convincingly dismissed. In fact, the author goes out of his way to repeatedly stress that Alvarenga would eat anything to survive. Aside from this lingering morbidity, I was disturbed by how respect for the mate’s memory was sacrificed at the expense making Alvarenga seem heroic. He is sometimes portrayed as a cowardly burden for his captain to bear, rather than a terrified, unlucky kid. In a phrase of breathtaking callousness, Alvarenga is said to discover “the benefits of solo travel” after the death of his mate. His story is never fully developed, and will be forever unknown.There are some randomly inserted commentaries by survival experts to pad the story. It ends with Alvarenga motivated by his experience to try to redeem himself for being a deadbeat dad. Despite the reconstruction, this is still an amazing story. But to have some firsthand insight into the soul of a man lost at sea, you can’t beat Adrift.

This is the story of Salvadore Alvarenga who survived 438 days at sea, in which he drifted 6,000 miles over the Pacific Ocean. Overall I rated this book four and a half stars out of five. This was a truly amazing story, it is a one of a kind story. The kind you will only hear once in your lifetime. It is one of those stories that you have trouble believing that it's true. I really liked how this book included relevant information/facts and opinions coming from specialists, in that they backed up as well as enriched Salvadore Alvarenga's remarkable survival at sea. I am in awe of Salvadore, in his humility and his optimism, in how he never gave up. Just close your eyes for a moment, and imagine that you are stranded at sea. What would you do? On November 17, 2012 Salvador Alvarenga and an inexperienced assistant Ezequiel Cordoba set out on a twenty-five-foot fishing boat from a small Mexican village. 438 days (and approximately 6,000 miles) later… Salvador washed up… alone… a “Wild Man”… “ashore on Tile Islet, a small island that is part of the larger atoll. Ebon is the southern tip of the 1,156 islands that make up the Republic of the Marshall Islands and one of the most remote spots on earth.”I remember seeing on TV the news a few days later reporting *ever-so-briefly* the “claim” that Alvarenga was lost at sea for fourteen months. The reports on two different stations were extremely short… and they hinted that this had to be a hoax. The image of the “supposed” historic survivor… with crazy hair and unkempt beard… and what looked like a generous belly… was never brought to my attention again…UNTIL… this UNEQUIVOCALLY… mesmerizing… hypnotic… empathy… inducing book. The author does an unbelievable job… start to finish. Jonathon Franklin first indoctrinates the reader… as to not only what type of individual Alvarenga was throughout his life… which included fleeing El Salvador… in fear of his life… after a brutal bar room brawl… but explains the entire life style of the Mexican village Alvarenga subsequently lived and worked in. There are no punches pulled in describing the day after day of drinking and drugs… followed by day after day of life threatening fishing for among other things sharks. The awful weather conditions that the area was famous for… and as if to prove the reputation was well earned… such a massive storm… is what started this whole fourteen-month odyssey.The impression the author makes on the reader… regarding the rough physical labor imbedded in these fishing trips… even before the small boat is taken out to parts of the ocean so dreaded and desolate… that even astronauts viewing it from space while orbiting the earth… make statements as to its… gloomy… dismal… isolation… is excruciating. As an example… in that tiny boat they carry “2-mile-long line studded with up to seven hundred hooks and hope the tuna, mahimahi, marlin and sharks are biting. Sharks are their preferred catch.” Two men alone bait the hooks… throw out the line… pull in the fish… by hand!After the boat is taken deep out to sea… with the motor non-operational… no paddles… no anchor (which would be worthless anyway)… a phone that no longer is usable… and weather that ranged from pouring storms… to day after day of unbearable heat… that literally bubbled the skin. The men’s faith and knowledge were tested minute to minute. They would run out of drinking water… run out of food… and soon only Salvador would remain. The reader is literally dragged into the hell on earth… that is… the tiny boat Salvador is in… you start feeling his hunger… his thirst… his success at times in catching with his bare hands… turtles… sharks… and then birds. The nauseating repulsion of what he has to eat… when he is “blessed” with the opportunity to… is palpitating. Covering himself with a cooler (ice) box that was meant to store the fish they went out to catch on the original trip… is used to protect him from the merciless sun… and to protect him from the cold at night. It’s claustrophobic to the reader… so imagine what it was to him.What takes this book to an even higher level… are the interspersed *expert* educational verification to facts that any doubter as to the time and space… and physical… AND… emotional… toll and situations… that were actually faced… might bring up. The author takes the offensive… in making sure… that anyone even off-handedly attempting to cast stones as to any of this being a fraud… are shot down… before they can even get any proverbial guns out of their holster. There are quotes from psychologists… biologists… ship captains… even astronauts. The author has truly done his homework.This awe-inspiring book doesn’t end when Salvador makes it to shore… think how you would be mentally and physically if you went not only fourteen months without being able to move twenty-five feet… fearing every moment for your life… starving and dying of thirst… but if you did not have the ability to talk to even one human being for a year? So… it wasn’t only muscles that atrophied so bad… that Salvador could barely walk ten feet… but his personality… and cognitive skills had almost totally deteriorated. The author professionally and humanly covers that also.This book will obviously be made into a movie one day… but with all the reading I’ve done over the years… I have never found a movie as good as a good book. There is no way on the Lord’s green earth… that a movie will be able to capture this entire story the way the author has.

Read the entire review of this book. Computer Networks won't save one minute over the next year. It has no step-by-step procedures, no problem solving sections, and no butt-saving tricks. The only purpose it can serve at a downed site is as a shield against thrown objects from frustrated users. Normally, theoretical books like this one receive a quick skim and are promptly sent to my for-looks-only tome tomb. However, this isn't a normal theoretical book. It's fascinating. In fact, I read it not once but three times. Tanenbaum has overhauled his second edition to take into account the massive shift to Internetworks and the IP protocol. As usual, he does an excellent job of elucidating the subtleties of the technology while maintaining his witty style.The book's key strength is that it combines solid theoretical underpinnings and clear explanations with consideration of the non-technical aspects of networking. These include market acceptance (some wise words on why ISDN failed, for example), the politics of "standards" and day-to-day pragmatic "getting it done" issues. Tanenbaum's broader consideration enables the book to avoid the trap of becoming an unworldly academic text. It gives "Computer Networks" its licence to function as an indispensable everyday working reference. I work in the communications/networking industry and keep this book handy. I lend it to colleagues to photocopy the odd section, and they always end up buying their own copy. Enough said! I gave this book a 9 for including some of the old and dying technologies that lack even instructional value, at the expense of newer technologies that are seeing wide deployment. Grist for the fourth edition, I guess :-)

This review compares the following four books:Computer Networks by Peterson and Davie (P & D)Computer Networks by TanenbaumComputer Networks by Comer / Internetworking with TCP/IPComputer Networking by Kurose and Ross (K & R)By far the best book in the list is "Computer Networking" by Kurose and Ross. This book covers all of the essential material that is in the other books but manages to do so in a relevant and entertaining way. This book is very up to date as seen by the release of the 5th Ed when the 4th Ed is barely two years old. There are lots of practical exercises using wireshark and the companion website is actually useful and relevant. The attitude of this book with regard to teaching networking concepts could be summed up as "try it out and see for yourself". One interesting thing to note is that the socket programming example are all in Java.Next up is the Peterson and Davie book which covers everything that Kurose and Ross discuss but is slightly more mathematical in how it goes about things. There are a lot more numerical examples and defining of formulas in this book which is fine by me and in no way detracts from the book. Also the socket programming examples are in C which is a little more traditional. The points where this text loses ground to K & R is that it doesn't have the practical application exercises that K & R has and it also doesn't extend the basic networking theory that is covered to modern protocols like K & R.The two Comer books come next. Comer's "Computer Networks" book is probably the most introductory book out of this whole list and is more of a survey of networking topics that doesn't cover anything in any real depth. Still, this is an excellent book in that it is a quick clear read that is very lucid in its explanations and you can't help feeling that you understand everything that is covered in the book. Comer's TCP/IP book is the equivalent of the other authors' computer network books and in that respect it is pretty average. It covers all of the relevant material and in a manner which is more than readable but that is all. There is nothing exceptional about the book which stands out from the rest.Last comes Tanenbaum's book from the author who is probably most famous for his OS books. This is probably the most technical and detailed of the books with lots of sample C code belying is experience with operating systems and their network stack code. The weak point of this book is that all of the code and technical minutia might prevent the reader from seeing the forest for the trees. Unless you are trying to learn how to program your own network stack for a Unix/Linux system, then I would get either the K & R book or the P & D book to learn networking for the first time. This book would best be served as a reference in which case the technical nature of the book becomes a benefit rather than detracting from the text.

Back in the days, being a computer science student, I had to read the 3rd version of this book, and I found it very helpful. Since then the book went through some significant changes (as did the computer networking industry in whole. This book makes a great job keeping current and make a robust (and sometime complicated) subject digestible.I do think the book is a little over-priced. Also, although it was said to come in "new" conditions, there are small bumps and wrinkles on the cover.

I like the original edition more. This copy was a special international edition and I thought it was lacking some background.

Got this book to quickly learn some computer network fundamentals for my job at a startup. I come from a signal processing/communication background but didn't have that much experience with network stuff -- after reading some reviews online this seemed to be the best book to learn from. I've gone through a bunch of the initial chapter already and this book is great. It's fascinating to learn about the Internet, TCP/IP, and the history of all these things. This will be invaluable for my work. One complaint is that the 4th edition was published in 2002 so it's already a bit dated. But there's a new 5th edition out this year -- that will probably update alot of the material hopefully. Also, the coverage of wireless is a bit spotty. It covers 802.11, but I wanted to see some coverage of cellular broadband as well -- i.e. 3G, LTE, WiMax. Clearly the latter were not around in 2002 -- but maybe they'll be covered in the new edition? In short, a phenomenal book to learn the fundamentals of networking theory. Great for self learning esp if you have a technical background.
