This is an absolutely amazing book on self-discipline and creativity. If you're an entrepreneur, an artist, a writer, scientist or just about anybody with an internal urge to CREATE something but cannot because of distractions, fears, doubts and apprehensions, then this is the book for you. This will book show and define the #1 thing that's stopping you from bringing out your creative potential. It's called Resistance and how it behaves and how it beats you.And then it stresses why we should overcome the resistance and how to overcome it successfully by detaching ourselves from the fruits, operating from a territorial perspective (i.e. Doing work for the sake of doing work).By the time I reached the small chapter on Gita and Krishna's explanation on doing work for work's sake, I literally had tears in my eyes.... Because that's the way an artist must operate, not caring for the fruits. And I can attest my success in my business & job for JUST that. I gave up all hopes, desires & doubts I had.I didn't care. I just decided to do the work, punched in my time and 3 years later, I'm at a level that's shocking for many (but something I dreamed about). However, I still have a lot of blocks where I didn't express myself and get the creative part of me and I'm fortunate to have come across this book.Anyone who is here to CREATE something - read it. It will change your life!

Here is this book in a nutshell: what do you want to do? Have discipline and do it. I just saved you ten dollars. You're welcome.

TLDR: This book is a written equivalent of Shia LeBeouf's "Just Do It" motivational speech - something that tries to be inspiring, but is cut with an undercurrent of crazy and unsupportable conjecture. It will resonate with some people and turn others off. Read on for a more detailed explanation. The books is, roughly, divided into three sections: Resistance, Combating Resistance, and Beyond Resistance. The first section was actually really good. It mostly got into what Resistance is - the counterforce to achievement - and the various ways it manifests itself. While not based on any sort of evidence or research, this section lays out an allegorical enemy worthy of an epic struggle. The second section is mostly about how a professional behaves and how this behavior can overcome Resistance. The summary of this section is: show up, do the work, don't get distracted. This was the most prescriptive section of the book, but I'd say it leaned more towards inspiration than prescription. If someone complains that this book is "just common sense", it is probably this section they are referring to.Emboldened by a couple solid sections, the author goes completely off the rails in the third. The book becomes very religious, espouses lousy pop psychology, and makes outlandish claims. If I were to sum this section up, I'd say the author puts forth the idea that the artist is a conduit for some sort of divine inspiration or work, made manifest through the benevolent intervention of angels. That might be slightly harsh summary, but not too far off the mark. He literally says "We were put here on earth to act as agents of the Infinite" and "The artist is the servant of that intention, those angels, that Muse." Okay, perhaps he's just being allegorical. Nope. When talking about the fruits of our labor, he says "That is to do the work and give it to Him. Do it as an offering to God."Putting the religious aspects of section 3 aside, the rest of it is the worst kind of shoot-from-the-hip psychology. He does a deep dive into the Ego - ignoring the conventional definition and redefines it for his own purposes. He tries to draw a distinction between a hierarchical and territorial mode of thinking - unsuccessfully. He makes outlandish claims, like ignoring the authentic self may be the cause of cancer and embracing the self might be its cure. He, literally, says that becoming your authentic self could cure cancer. He goes on to explain how the colloquialisms for inebriation - stoned, smashed, hammered - are all referring to the destruction of the Ego in order to access the Self. There's no etymological basis for his statement. There isn't even any anecdotal evidence to support this. When speaking about the relationship between a mother and her child, he says "She knows it came out of her but not from her, through her but not of her." It's an interesting thought, but biologically incorrect. Lastly, he makes claims that are openly contrary. He says "Union and mutual assistance are the imperatives of life", but a few pages later says it would be incorrect to call friends for reassurance if you were feeling anxious. To me, this section felt like a mess and it ruined the book for me.In summary, this book does not have any sort of authoritative voice on procrastination, productivity, or personal achievement. It is a snapshot of a specific artist's mental model of the creative struggle. If you are looking for some sort of cogent or practical insights, then you will be disappointed. If you would describe yourself as spiritual and, probably, believe that crystals have curative properties (no judgement), then this book will probably speak to you.

I read the foreword and first groaned a little with the god talk. I continued to read. I couldn't make it to book three. This the first time in awhile I couldn't finish a book. Judging by how much I agree with many of the other 1 star reviews, I can only expect a greater degree of suffering and discomfort as the book "goes off the rails" in book 3. I find it interesting the five star reviews that say this book is motivating. I actually found it depressing and full of negative energy. It's riddled with feelings of guilt (the Christian kind), xenophobia, intolerance, disarray and just plain ignorance. It's full of strong opinions and weak on coherence and logical reasoning. I found the author contradictory in many cases. Also, the format is terribly annoying.Summary: Book 1: stop procrastinating. Book 2: just do it. Book 3: make art for god? If there is a god, please help steer others away from this silly book.

Thought provoking book. The sections on Resistance really resonated with me. I can find a thousand things to do instead of creating my art and, at my age, if I don't take control and overcome Resistance pretty soon, my time will be up. Not being a "God" believer, the last part of the book left me cold. I suppose I could extrapolate those sections into forces of the universe, but it was a let down to have to wade through all that anyway. One message is clear: Start. Open your eyes and your heart to supporting forces (people) that will cross your path (like never noticing another Land Rover on the road until you buy one and suddenly they are everywhere), and create for the sake of creating.

If you have ever wondered what it would be like to enter the mind of a genius, here's your chance. Wurman, who founded the TED conferences, also mapped dozens of cities, and established an entire new branch of design—Information Architecture— has more than enough credits for several genius level resumes. He's written 85 books. He's also the author of a truly life changing article on failure in the design process.Whereas most geniuses dazzle you with how far they above the ordinary mind, Wurman takes you along on a series of explorations in clarity. He teaches the value of contemplating a single, penetrating question, and following it to logical extremes. He likes to start by observing things with a completely empty mind, thus to see a subject more clearly. He doesn't dumb down complex material. He does lay bare the utter necessity of real understanding. The pages are filled with amiable self-talk, studded with some really remarkable phrases and sentences. "Information Anxiety", "Intellectual Jazz". "I don't write a book out of my expertise, that is finite—I write out of my ignorance, which is infinite." "I seek clarity, not simplicity."Wurman loves jousting with highly accomplished people; he's not bashful about dropping their names. At the same time, he's always filled with insight and admiration for exceptional work. He loves people who grapple with complexity and deliver work of elegant simplicity. Architects, musicians, billionaires. This book is a typographic playground. Fun to look at, it challenging the viewer to take in information in many ways. It is harder to really read; that is perhaps its only drawback. Because UU deserves to be really read, studied, gleaned—there are a lot of insights here for the reader who goes deeper. Most books are written to be read front to back. Wurman—ever the keen observer of people—knows that we read by grazing, wandering, bouncing like a pinball between bright lights. So his organization is heuristic—bright lights everywhere. Articles are connected, some by time, some by personality, some by subject, some just by design. (Ok, some are just for fun.)None of this description does justice to the experience of perusing UU. It will most certainly occupy coffee tables of many movers and shakers.Think of it as a ticket to ride. UU is a rare opportunity to wander the mind, curiosity, and friendships of one of the most important intellects of the Information Era.

"The vivid eye,Closing upon difficultyOpens upon comparison."7lbs and 700+ pages of marvelous comparisons and contrasts spanning decades of architecture, and design, and information architecture work with lots of little stories and marginalia to get interested in along the way.

I happened to see Richard Saul Wurman in conversation with the great musician Kevin Eubanks in a session at Comic Con Silicon Valley. I thought it was a strange pairing, those two. But the audience and I were riveted. I tell people stories from that session. I had attended TED when Richard ran it and still remember some of the fascinating conversations he had on stage with some of the world's most interesting people. At Comic Con, the organizer mentioned this book. Richard responded that he doesn't plug his books. He made it sound like it was nothing.I bought it and couldn't believe the weight and production quality. I have never been so shocked when receiving a book. It's huge, it's superbly designed with illustrations and photos throughout, but it's in rich, digestible chunks. You can get lost in the chapter on Frank Gehry, 10 pages, mostly photos and illustrations, and then get immersed in a chapter on dogs or cities (comparing their form and scale). I jump around picking topics I'm in the mood for.I actually think it's a shame he's so low-profile on this book because it's incredible.

I have read more than 900+ books in the last 20 years and this is bar far the MOST interesting. First, it unpacks a simple, yet complex thesis of "understanding". Next, it's a complete work of art. It's visually stunning. It's one the first books I have ever read to be sipped and savored vs devoured for efficiency. Past all of this, if you are looking to give a killer gift, this is a great choice.

This is a book of joy and a book of reflection. Like a fine glass of wine, it is to be savored but is hard to put down. While it may be appropriate for the coffee table, it’s purpose is more than to offer beautiful photographs. Understanding Understanding compels you to think differently, see the world with an enhanced sense of enlightenment and develop curiosity around a plethora of musings and topics that are sublimely riveting. This would be a beautiful gift to someone you cherish deeply. This is also a book that is a great gift to yourself. It’s visually stirring but spiritually uplifting. It’s contemplative, joyful, empathetic, stimulating and stunning. Understanding Understanding is truly mind-bending.

There are moments I could not put the book down. There are moments flipping it through, I know this book is a few decades of journey of great minds and I can always go back to be part of it....

Understanding is not binary-- it's, it's, it's-- all over the place! What a wonderful lifetime's collection from the world's #1 curator and curiositeer on understanding in all it's colors. Why don't we teach this in school???

If it’s true, according to Francis Bacon, that ‘knowledge is power’, then, after reading Richard Saul Wurman’s amazingly informative (and entertaining) new tome; UNDERSTANDING UNDERSTANDING, I’m invincible!Kudos and Thanks to Wurman, for this great literary contribution.

As another reviewer wrote, there is too much wasted white space in this printing, which forces the notes too close together and it is intimidating to children. More practiced adults would have a difficult time without reading glasses, in many cases. And, perhaps only two out of 10 songs were easy enough for our children just learning how to play chords with accidentals, etc. But we would have kept it had the printing not been too small.

I bought Piano Pieces for Children on the recommendation of my piano teacher who told me not to be troubled by the name. She's right, saying it is for children makes it sound... well, childish. But these pieces are anything but. None of them are dumbed down for easy playing, they are just well selected and arranged and graded (i-IV) so you can find work at the appropriate level. Most importantly, the music is not boring. I'm personally a fan of classical music and want to play so that I can experience this music in a more intimate manner - playing exercises that are designed to be nothing more than exercises would drive me crazy. I highly recommend this for anyone learning to play and who is hoping to develop a fun, interesting repertoire. Also, find a good teacher to help you. I tried teaching myself for years, but I've made more progress in a few weeks under the guidance of a teacher than I did in years on my own.

I've got a copy of this from way back when (I learned to play piano as a kid in the 1950's and it was old even then) and the cover as well as some of the pages had gone missing. It is exactly the same and offers well known pieces in fairly easy arrangements and makes a wonderful addition to your sheet music collection.

I love love love this book. I've played this since I was young. So happy to find this book on Amazon and I must have it.

I chose this version because of the cheaper price. But the music notes are quite small. I am not sure how the 1992 version one looks, but I will definitely check both of them in the music store. If the 1992 one has bigger notes, I will return this one,

I remembered this book from my childhood and purchased it for my grandson. A variety of pieces which span the pianist's abilities.

Very good book. Contains a wide variety of pieces, including many classics, arranged on a grade 3 level. Has something for everyone.

Piano teacher rejects this book as the print is too small. I agree since you can clearly see almost 2" margin on the bottom and 1.5" margin on both sides. Need to return and find another version.

I can look up my plant and get an easy to read description & care plan for it. If there is a problem I can see if I am solve it too.

Loved this book and love Nell and have enjoyed watching her videos and learning a ton from her. Being a beginner to houseplants I was hoping for a little more detail (hand holding details such as how much water when watering - water through or just pour some in, etc), but that being said, I have learned a lot and would absolutely recommend this ebook!

I absolutely love it! To put it briefly, there's really nothing negative that I could say about 'Keep Your Houseplants Alive'. The advice is straightforward and concise, yet professional and sophisticated while still staying a pleasurable read due to the smooth, almost conversational tone that overlaps the writing style. I also found the pictures to be especially helpful and they compliment the overall informative and well-refined writing style very well.Overall, it's the perfect book for beginners, such as myself, though I'm sure even the more plant-competent people out there could learn quite a few new tricks from this read. I highly recommend it!

I appreciate all the details in this book. I have moved plants all over the house trying to find the perfect place. This takes all the guesswork out.

I am learning to be a master gardner and my reference material does not include indoor plants. I shall be using your book as a reference material. I don't have any of the plants that you mention but I believe that your information is sound and will work with the ones I do have or might be asked about. Very good job. Your material is sound and well presented.

This book was very helpful for a beginner in the plant world. I just wish there were more low light options that are pet friendly listed

Started reading and it annoyed me that it kept linking me back to the beginning. I stoooed reading but it gives good info.

Having gardened for many years, I was delighted to read more in-depth about the basics of watering. Another important point was the toxicity level of several plants in relation to pets. I did not realize that several.plants on my home were toxic.

Review

"Carol Berry interweaves her own stories with Henri Nouwen's and with those of the artist who inspired them both, Vincent van Gogh. Her deep insights into struggle, solidarity with people, and the nature of creativity are powerful and universal. With careful research and thoughtful reflections, Berry clearly shows the reader the interconnections of their journeys and the threads of beauty they share. As an artist, Berry is able to share from her own sensitivity and insights into Vincent's art making. The printed artworks within allow the reader to reflect on the narrative. I loved this beautiful, deeply felt book."--John August Swanson, artist and printmaker"Carol Berry's deep knowledge of Vincent van Gogh, facilitated early on by her friendship with Henri Nouwen, helps us better connect our own suffering and the suffering of others to a more compassionate way of life. Carol invites us to move into the realm of mystery and grace as she underscores the humility and humanity of both men whose ultimate concern was to live practically and lovingly using Jesus as their guide and model. Carol Berry weaves together the lives of these two great Dutch spiritual masters and then offers wonder filled personal experiences of compassion. For Carol, Henri and Vincent are two wounded healers of the world. They are true brothers able in their own unique but powerfully connected way to heal so many--even now. Carol Berry's book is an inspiration."--Richard Rohr, Center for Action and Contemplation"Henri Nouwen and Vincent van Gogh are two of my favorite people. Their word and art inspire me daily, pointing me back to our beloved God, the glories of creation, swirling night skies and wheat fields, and sisters and brothers of every walk. Carol Berry unpacks their lessons and like Henri and Vincent offers the most beautiful gift--a sense of hope. Just what we need."--John Dear, author of The Questions of Jesus and The Nonviolent Life"From the faithful and artistic genius of Vincent van Gogh to the passionate and insightful teachings of Henri Nouwen this light-filled book is a must-read for everyone. A personal glimpse into the author's shining examples of living the compassionate life, gives intimate and amazing insight into loving our neighbors as ourselves. A colorful and brilliant work about love and genuine concern that bring van Gogh and Nouwen to life as servant leaders to humanity."--Jane A. LoBrutto, licensed minister and administrator"Carol Berry, artist, storyteller, and theologian (my words not hers), invites us to journey into the transcendent intersecting worlds of Fr. Henri Nouwen and Vincent van Gogh by recreating the experience of the only seminar by Fr. Nouwen on 'The Compassion of Vincent van Gogh.' I believe Henri to be one of the most, if not the most, profound and approachable spiritual guides of the last century, and Vincent an equally similar guide through his art. Carol's work sheds light on lesser known aspects of Vincent's life and vocation and at the same time invites us to reflect on our own lives as Henri evoked the compassionate way moving from the solidarity of suffering to consolation and then to comfort. Carol is refreshingly honest in telling her experiences with both Henri and Vincent but in ways that invite the reader to look more deeply into their own experiences and 'see therein the presence of the divine.' This compelling work will appeal to a broad audience in many fields."--Phillip N. Grigsby, executive director, Schenectady (NY) Community Ministries, former president and a founding member of Capital Region Theological Center"From the moment I first discovered that Henri Nouwen taught a course at Yale Divinity School on the life and work of Vincent van Gogh, I searched for his class notes only to be disappointed to discover that they were never published--until now. Carol Berry has written the book I longed to find, weaving Nouwen's enduring wisdom with van Gogh's singular gift of using art to comfort and console. Nouwen and van Gogh--both wounded healers--invite us to a life of compassion, humility, and sacrificial love. With deep insight and sensitivity, Berry creates space for us to connect our stories with theirs and to discover what is worth seeing: the radiant beauty of hope within suffering and Christ's call for us to lay down our lives for others. This book is a timely and noteworthy gift."--Sharon Garlough Brown, author of the Sensible Shoes series and Shades of Light

She learns from two artful men of great compassion, artist Vincent van Gogh and theologian Henri Nouwen. It was what she learned in Nouwen's course on van Gogh at Yale Divinity School, and Carol's own subsequent research about the artist, that eventually spilled over into her own life experiences and gave her a new lens of compassion through which to filter all of it. The vignettes she relates from her own life as an artist and from her ministry witness to a life that is met on its own terms. She doesn't try to manipulate the details. She enters the life that is given to her at any moment and is transformed by it. Review

"The letter Q stands for 'queer,' of course, and in this lovely, often funny, and always heartfelt book, more than five dozen celebrated writers send letters to their teenage selves. Each note, in its own individual way, promises the author's younger self hope that, in the future, life will get better.... The assembled authors, actors, playwrights, and illustrators are a veritable who's-who of the LGBT creative world, and whose audiences include both young adults and adults." -- Booklist, starred review"A thoughtful, humorous, and moving collection of letters and comics... Read together, the letters become a powerful refrain." -- Publishers Weekly"With its repeated exhortations to relax more and worry less, this book might be a life-saver for some -- and could function as an author list, as well, for teens wanting to read more about People Like Us." -- Horn Book

This book is a great read that appeals to gay people of all ages. This book needs to be on the shelves of high school and public libraries everywhere. When I was struggling as a teenager I would have loved to have seen this book and hear how people, just like me, really turned out to be happy, healthy, and successful. This book is very easy to read as the letters are of reasonable length and interspersed are some great comics making the same point.

I really enjoyed this book as it was extremely uplifting to see a successful adult connecting with their younger self at a moment of desperation, sadness, loneliness and when they are still trying to find out who they are. This for me is a book about hope and whilst the sexuality of the author is a very important trigger, I just engaged with each letter one by one because every teenager has to find their own identity and sexuality. It was a very easy read. I laughed and had an occasional tear.....thanks for a great compilation and a fabulous read!

I loved this book. It is original, heartfelt and real. I have bought copies to give to friends as well. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is LGBT or who knows and loves someone who is.

loved these letters to self I found pieces of me in every one of them...

This anthology of letters didn't simply serve as a reminder that there is life after adolescence and you will have choices in your adult life that you might not have had as a child, but it's a really interesting read. I enjoyed each and every letter in this book. What a wonderful resource to pass along to young adults who may find exactly the words they needed to hear.

As Fats Waller wrote, I Want to sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter ..... and I will. Thanks James and Sarah for this important book. Thanks Melanie and Michael for the way you think.

I read a few chapters, but was not compelled to keep readong

As a forty-something who was hoping for an uplifting read, I found this collection unexpectedly depressing. I feel like it was written by the ones who came out on top in life's arms race. Where are the writers whose prince or princess left them after 15 years and find themselves lonely? Or the ones shouldering all the responsibility for dying parents because their straight siblings have more important lives to live? Or the ones who are struggling professionally and financially?I feel that any smart teenager who reads this book will quickly see through the relentless whitewashing. The least one can do is to be honest. It boggles the mind that everybody's life in this book could really have turned out so great. Hasn't any of these writers ever regretted anything? Or struggled with illness or depression? Or indeed suffered any adversity after high school graduation? Reading this book just makes me feel even more of an outsider.
