Physically a very large book. The photos vary in style which is nice. A lot of them are intentionally blurry, some feature just landscape shots of Norway, a mix of black & white and color photography. Members of Gorgoroth are featured most prominently due to the VICE documentary of the same name that Peter Beste worked on. Mine also had what I assume was a binding or printing defect in that several of the pages were stuck together on the outer edges with glue or something. I was able to pry them apart carefully on most of pages were unaffected although some do now have little white spots on the edges where the ink came off. I'm sure I could have gotten an exchange or refund if I had pursued it and I haven't read any other reviews mentioning it so probably nothing to worry about.

Most of the pictures in this book are to be found on the internet, but it's still better to have them collected in a book, with a greater resolution and feel. Everything is printed on nice, thick paper. Nothing feels cheap about this book at all. If you're interested in black metal and/or art and/or photography I'd say this is a must have. I have friends that are not into black metal being fascinated by the book, and they keep looking in it and asking for me to tell them about the musicians, the bands and whatnot. It's a good mix of the typical "black metal" photos and more conventional photos. It's not JUST pictures like the cover photo, so don't be fooled by it. Peter Beste is a great photographer, and there is a lot of stunning photographies in the book, and you could say that this is a museum art exhibit in book form.

In Australia, this book can retail for double the price I paid on Amazon, so it's a no brainer. The quality of this book is such that not only is it huge, however there is not much narrative. It is dominated by pictures of black metal in Norway. Which in a way is really good, as it allows the viewer to gauge their own thoughts on this very misunderstood genre. There is a very helpful three page fold out on the evolution of Norse history and the evolution of black metal and other contributing individuals (e.g. Tolkein and Alistair Crowley). Thankfully my book was very well packaged and I have been through it several times. It is just a shame the black metal fraternity in Norway destabilised where acts of murder and arson were the focus of an underground genre which as a result, has become seminal in the metal world. Just be mindful, if you have young children, some photos may alarm. Definitely recommend.

Beautiful pictures of a disturbing and dark culture. This is a good book that paints a vivid picture of the sub-genre known as "black metal" more with pictures than words. The few pages that have text are informative and interesting. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about the lives that contributed to the mysterious nature of this sub-culture.

First off, what a deal Amazon has on this. Pretty much half off what a person would pay in the store.Anyway, like the other reviews here, this book is no slouch. It's meant for the coffee table and if you don't have a coffee table then it garners an extra seat on the couch. When people visit they have to sit next to the large front cover of Nattefrost holding up his inverted crucifix. It's definitely a conversation starter.I've been a fan of this sub-genre of metal for a while now. I'm not going to lie and say that I've liked it or even knew about the "second wave" when it was happening. I was happily listening to my death, thrash, and classic metal albums at the time. But, when I finally did discover it, I found a new form of extreme music that paralleled my tastes at the time (around 1996).Pros: Peter Beste's True Norwegian Black Metal captures some of the most memorable photos of the scene throughout the years. My favorites are in here and it's nice to have them on hand and just sit and look at the various photos in detail. There is additional information and old reviews/interviews with the Norwegian black metal alumni near the back as well as a tribute to ex-Mayhem vocalist "Dead". I was expecting to see Dead's body (Dawn of the Black Hearts) but alas, it was nowhere to be found. I'm neither disappointed or elated.Cons: There is an index with page numbers and names of individuals and/or bands, but a lot of good the page numbers do when the pages have no numbers printed on them! That's probably my only gripe.Objectively, looking on the scene then and now, my opinion remains slightly mixed on the scene's ideals, chest thumping, and rebellion. On one hand, some of the pictures such as Kvitrafn of Wardruna standing in Bergen is one of the most sociological telling pictures of the 20th century. The look on the woman's face passing on the left side is priceless next to Kvitrafn's grim countenance. The lone pictures of single individuals amidst forested backgrounds, vast plains, or in front of large mountain ranges hints at an even more darker, and to a certain extent, the lonely place where these musicians dwell in their minds and hearts. Cut off from the world and insignificant when compared with the majesty of nature, they emit a feeling of solitude which only the strong-willed are able to withstand. In other parts of the book though, we see the less majestic to the point of the absurd and just plain sad. Nattefrost seems evil and armored for battle in most of his photos. But in one (almost candid?) shot we see him lying in his bathtub, shirtless, grasping a bottle of booze, yet still trying to ham it up for the camera even though his persona has been whittled down to little than a drunken buffoon. Unfortunately I have to say that as much as I love Immortal, Abbath hams it up for the camera even more. I'd much rather see Abbath in a more grim mode ala Pure Holocaust than say...At the Heart of Winter (which is an awesome album, but the band photos...meh).That's about it. I love this book. Frontwards and back. I'm looking forward to sharing it with my metal buds who I know will appreciate it as much as I do.Keep those horns raised high.

I love this book. captures the black metal scene in norway over the course of seven years and has plenty to read inside aswell giving knowlege on the culture and history of this music. the photos are absolutely great. whether you are into photography or just into black metal you may want to check this book out. I got it for less than the cost of the books price printed on it too and with amazon prime free shipping!

Do you love Black Metal, music history, and or gritty but well done photography? If the answer is yes than this needs to be on your book shelf.

This is a great coffee table book! I bought it for my boyfriend (a drummer in a black metal band) and he absolutely loved it. I found I couldn't put it down either - as a photographer (who loves to shoot any band) the photos in the book are awesome. Although this isn't really my scene it was easy to appreciate the book as a whole and learn about the band members.

The Great Game: The Struggle for Empire in Central Asia (Kodansha Globe), by Peter Hopkirk

Amazon.com Review

In a phrase coined by Captain Arthur Connolly of the East India Company before he was beheaded in Bokhara for spying in 1842, a "Great Game" was played between Tsarist Russia and Victorian England for supremacy in Central Asia. At stake was the security of India, key to the wealth of the British Empire. When play began early in the 19th century, the frontiers of the two imperial powers lay two thousand miles apart, across vast deserts and almost impassable mountain ranges; by the end, only 20 miles separated the two rivals. Peter Hopkirk, a former reporter for The Times of London with wide experience of the region, tells an extraordinary story of ambition, intrigue, and military adventure. His sensational narrative moves at breakneck pace, yet even as he paints his colorful characters--tribal chieftains, generals, spies, Queen Victoria herself--he skillfully provides a clear overview of the geographical and diplomatic framework. The Great Game was Russia's version of America's "Manifest Destiny" to dominate a continent, and Hopkirk is careful to explain Russian viewpoints as fully as those of the British. The story ends with the fall of Tsarist Russia in 1917, but the demise of the Soviet Empire (hastened by a decade of bloody fighting in Afghanistan) gives it new relevance, as world peace and stability are again threatened by tensions in this volatile region of great mineral wealth and strategic significance. --John Stevenson

Words cannot express the invaluable service that Peter Hopkirk has rendered to students of the Great Game with this impressive volume. Starting heartrendingly with the 1842 execution of Colonel Charles Stoddart and Captain Arthur Conolly at the hands of the villainous Emir of Bokhara, climaxing with Francis Younghusband's meeting with the Russian Captain Gromchevsky in the Pamirs that almost ignited a war, and ending with the ill-fated British mission to Lhasa, The Great Game keeps the reader in a constant state of suspense. During Hopkirk's research, he came across a rare photograph of Younghusband and Gromchevsky's 1889 meeting north of Hunza that almost came to disaster, which is included in this volume. Along the way, the reader is introduced to such personalities as Yakub Beg, Frederick Burnaby, James Abbott (namesake of the infamous Abbottabad of Bin Laden fame), Alexander Burnes, Colonel Nikolai Prejevalsky, Sir William Macnaghten, intelligence agent extraordinaire who was the [US Ambassador] Christopher Stevens of his day), and the terminally choleric Emir of Bokhara--all players in the Great Game. As a testament to Hopkirk's skill as a writer, The Great Game reads more like an espionage novel than a dry history. It is, in fact, a pure delight as well as a cautionary tale for our generation.

• Many boys (and probably many girls too) grow up dreaming about adventure: exploration, seizing opportunity, exotic locations, solitary travels in wild locales, especially to foreign enclaves never before visited by westerners (or only by mythic predecessors) with strange customs and filled with riches and danger and invariably ruled by mercurial despots. Since these no longer exist, or, more probably, have been de-romanticized, much of this longing is now transferred to science fiction. But in the 18th and 19th century it was all very real. In Asia, between the dominions of the great powers Russia and Great Britain, much of the continent was ruled by medieval political entities fragmented by deserts, rivers, and mountain ranges whose names themselves are the ultimate romantic evocation: The Himalayas, Hindu Kush, Karakoram, Oxus, the lands and cities of the Sild Road, Samarkand, Bokhara, Tashkent, Kandahar. It was a time when a single intrepid adventurer could make a heroic journey, bluff, impress, and bribe his way into the good graces of the local potentate, and make a treaty that would shift world power. Or perhaps explore and survey the unknown geography and customs to prepare for the next traveler. This was the Great Game. As the quotes on the cover attest, Peter Hopkirk is “truly the laureate of the Great Game.” A former top-shelf reporter, he has also sufficient historian cred and sense of drama to combine research, analysis, synthesis, and storytelling into a fantastic, entertaining, and informative book. A series of adventure stories for grown up boys. The tapestry is the vastness of central Asia in what are now Russian, India, Pakistan, Iran, Turkey, Afghanistan, Xinxiang, Tibet, Nepal, and all the ‘stans’ of the former Soviet Union. As the decades progress the expeditions get larger. From the single adventurer to pairs to squadrons to occupation and frontier war. But (in retrospect this is obvious) never a major war between the principals. What cliff hangers: From a random page (242): “But is was far from over yet. Worse – much worse – was yet to follow.” And just plain excitement: on one random page (104) -- “where `all the horrors and abominations of Sodom and Gomorrah’ were practiced”; “Eversmann’s disguise … must have been remarkably convincing, for the Emir’s secret police … suspected nothing ….” And sweep: another chapter begins, “in the beginning of the 19th century, the three warring khanates of Khiva, Bokhara, and Kokand between them ruled the vast region … half the size of America ….” This is the flavor of the book. There is no pretense to making a larger point other than the obvious ones: clash of cultures, the mind of the adventurer, 19th century imperialism, the methods of exploration. This is a good thing. In fact, the only criticism is the huge number of stories. No part is too long or drags. But in the end 500 pages is a lot of Saturday afternoon movie excitement to read straight through. It may be best enjoyed over a year of Saturdays!

More fun than anything I've read for a while. The history of Russian expansion in Central Asia during the 19th century and the resulting conflict with Britain. If you've ever wondered how Kazakhstan became part of the Soviet Union then this book will give you the answer. Along the way you'll be introduced to some of the bravest, toughest and occasionally unluckiest men who ever served her Majesty. I couldn't put it down.

The Great Game is a name for the geo-political struggle between Russia and the U.K. for supremacy in the region that we today call Central Asia, the Chinese Far West and Afghanistan. This struggle, which bears many similarities to more recent conflicts in this region, took place during the 19th century. The gist of the conflict pitted an expansive Russian Empire against the defensive British Colony of India (today's India and Pakistan.) Then, as was the case in the 1980s, the concern was with Russian expansion towards the Indian Ocean. In the 19th century, it was the British who got their ass handed to them by the Afghani's- in particular during the first Afghani War of the 1840s the Brits lost 16,000 men from their occupying force- during the course of their retreat- from an Army that numbered about 16,000. Aside from the to-and-fro of the British occupying strageically important countries like Afghanistan, the Great Game was a contest between the secret agents of Britain and Russia- trying to bring disparate Central Asian Despots "into the fold." Along the way many people- British and Russians- lost their lives in ways directly and indirectly related to the conflict. The Great Game very much pre-saged the cloak and dagger aspects of the Russian/Western Cold War in the 20th century- secret codes, spies, murky geo-political ambitions- it was all there in the 19th century. The Brits and Russians even had their own Cold Warriors- called Anglophobes on the Russian side and Russophobes on the British. These partisan created their own body of literature that excited much popular comment, much as similar literature created excited during the 20th century cold war. I can't help but wonder to what extent the American Government was familiar with the narrative of the Great Game in the aftermath of 9/11, and why, exactly, they thought our intervention would end any differently then the intervention of the Russians and British in the 19th century. Afghanistan is a bloody place, best keep your distance, is my view.

Great books with good vocabulary building words. Fun sketches, color and words that have fun fonts to tell the story!!My 8yr old reads about 2nd grade level and loves these!!

I received this book and my daughter enjoyed it. However Today we received a new book of Thea Stilton which is Big trouble in the big apple and from the minute my daughter opened the book, she saw the similarity with the Tropical Treasure and we compare it page by page and both book have the same content which is about big apple. Very disappointed and what a waste of money.

In our girls transition from small books to "chapter" books, we find boy only is the story line great for keeping her attention, but also fully illustrated. She loves these books.

Daughter loves this series

My 8 year old bought this for herself and was really happy with it. Easy to read with pictures and a fun plot. She was happy.

My kids love these books. I'm very satisfied with the quality of the items.

My 11 year old continues to love this entire series. Highly recommend. Interesting story lines and colorful pictures.

Absolutely amazing! Awesome book, the pictures were cool! They've changed, I liked this style way better. I can't wait for the next book!!!! =D

Kate Morton is that rare breed of writers for me who totally and utterly has you captivated and hanging on her every word. She weaves the many threads of two stories into a complex and intriguing tapestry of secrets, red herrings and a world which is so vivid and evocative, it’s as if you could step through the cover and see it for yourself. The two stories, past and present wove seamlessly together although for me the story of the past was the most absorbing. What did happen that fateful midsummer night? As ever with Kate, you think you know, until the very end when you realise she’s been teasing you with something all along and you’re as lost in that big ramshackle garden as the children in the story. The idea of going back to an old house and discovering its secrets of what happened that fateful day is captivating. Alice in the present day is a mystery to herself and I particularly loved finding all about her in flashbacks to when she was an excited teenager. Oh and Eleanor and Anthony – I gasped when I found out what was going on and the events leading up to that midsummer night. In the present day, Sadie tries to unravel it all but her own story threatens to cloud her judgement. The stories worked very well together and added a real sense of intrigue.I was pulled and pushed in one direction after another – from 1933, back to 1911 and then back to 2003 but never once did I feel lost. The characters stories build and flow seamlessly and I particularly loved the idea that Alice was now a mystery writer and had followed her dreams. Oh to read a Diggory Brent novel now! It’s tricky to review without giving anything away but I totally recommend this for fans of a complex, intricate mystery which will take you on a journey and immerse you in the walls of a utterly captivating Cornish lake house. The Cornish setting is a real draw for us booktrailers who love to visit the settings of the novel and there's Polperro and many real life inspirations for which inspired Kate for her story. She sent us pics and locations and they're on our map. Happy travelling!

This novel is sprinkled with so many mysteries I couldn't help but take notes to capture all of my questions, clues, and the possible outcomes I was predicting. While all Kate Morton novels have a mystery or two (or five), The Lake House is her most overt mystery story, featuring a detective trying to unravel a cold missing persons case, as well as a mystery crime writer. My notes have about 30 questions I had while reading, each with multiple possible answers, so there's no shortage of mysteries to sink your teeth into. The story challenges the rules of the genre and sticks with Morton's usual focus on family secrets and shifting between time periods. There are so many wonderful themes that the book addresses: the cost of promises, effects of guilt, thoughts on motherhood, meaning of responsibility and right vs. wrong, and how perception can differ from truth. I am not normally a note taker while reading but in addition to capturing my unanswered questions I found myself jotting down thoughts on each theme as I pondered over what the book had to say, all the while wishing I could get my hands on essays that explored the book's use of each theme in more detail. It's that thought provoking. What Morton has to say about how guilt can affect perceptions of reality is particularly fascinating. She also has you questioning what it means to be honorable and if any lengths are too far to go for love and friendship. As others have mentioned, the ending is particularly tidy and feels entirely too coincidental. Towards the end of the book I found myself thinking "wouldn't it be amazing if... but no, that would be ridiculous and so unbelievable... buuuuuut it would still be amazing..." and my "dot dot dot" thought ending up being right. I wouldn't have minded if it were left at that final revelation but the last chapter was way too sunshine-y and saccharine for my taste. However, it far from spoiled the story. Without the last chapter it's a near perfect read and one of Morton's best.

Dysfunctional family dynamics drive Kate Morton's "The Lake House," a saga that repeatedly moves back and forth in time. Prior to the First World War, Anthony Edevane and Eleanor deShiel fall in love and marry. They eventually settle down in Loeanneth, a country home in Cornwall that is surrounded by nature at her most sublime. The Edevanes' three daughters, Deborah, Alice, and Clementine, enjoy a carefree and privileged existence. In 2003, Detective Constable Sadie Sparrow, who is impulsive, curious, and restless, is on leave in Cornwall after committing a serious infraction. She takes it upon herself to find out exactly what befell the inhabitants of Loeanneth and why. Her investigation will, she hopes, serve as a distraction while she awaits disciplinary action.Morton gradually reveals that quite a few of her characters are unhappy and frustrated in ways that are not obvious to the casual observer. A sixteen-year-old aspiring novelist is infatuated with a handsome older man; agonizing memories haunt a shell-shocked and guilt-ridden veteran; a bitter individual awaits an opportunity to take revenge on someone she loathes; a marriage is slowly disintegrating; and an inexplicable disappearance unmoors the residents of Loeanneth.Kate Morton is a skilled descriptive writer who creates a magical world that is almost too idyllic. Loeanneth is filled with earthly delights, but it is also a place of temptation, transgression, and retribution. We grow to care in particular about Alice, Eleanor, and Sadie, who are all strong, independent, and resilient. Fans of historical fiction will enjoy certain aspects of this intricate story, but "The Lake House" is not an unqualified success. It is too long and rambling, cluttered with an abundance of red herrings and clichés, and concludes with an implausible ending that may impel readers to groan out loud.

Completing a previously read series. I read this series many years ago when it first came out. I was glad to find it in the omnibus form which would allow me to have all the books in the series in a condensed shape. Book 4 here collects Death Note vol. 7 &8 of the 12 book series. Not to cofuse anyone but the 13th book of Death Note is not a continuation of the series it is mostly filler material. The black editions only go to 6 books which has vol. 11 & 12 of the series. If you have not read the books I strongly suggest starting with book 1. This series has an interesting concept of a shinkogami (death god) dropping it's notebook on Earth and what happens when a teenage boy suddenly has power over death. The series is well written and entertaining enough that even my husband who does not care for most Manga wanted to read the entire series. My suggestion as with most Manga would be for parents to pay strict attention to the parental guidelines provided and understand what they mean before buying any manga. This series has an OLDER teen rating and would not be suitable for most children or younger teens.

The manga was very awesome and had a LOT more info and story than the anime. Of course the Death Note anime was much better than the Netflix movie adaptation.

Beautiful version of Death Note. I usually buy books I like with the most attractive covers since I collect and put them on my bookshelf, and this Black Edition is absolutely gorgeous!!

What expectations could I have had? I'm just giving this review so that Amazon will stop bugging me about it. It's a book, it's not like I expected it to do my laundry.

Good series

How can I place more emphasis on this already totally awesome series? IV in particular is the half point in the VI part black volume, which is volume 7 of 12 in the overall manga. Black makes it that much better in that there are full color pictures in the front of each edition, fuller sized images of all drawn work through out (maybe 15-30% larger than in the regular volumes?) And best of all, the fact that there are two volumes per one book (7&8 in this one) and that this particularly dark and anti-hero manga series were placed in a very fitting black theme. When viewed from a side profile the page trim is as black as the cover.

Nice

Love it, but have to be very careful since the front and back cover seem to have some velvety texture; I wonder if it was painted on because it start chipping in a few small places but not noticeable enough to make a big deal about it.
