I am giving it three stars because I really think the author writes a solid piece. I like the plot and the character’s super abilities are intriguing. However, I had some issues with the heroin (main character) herself. Sloan (the heroin) had a boyfriend in high school who cheated on her with this girl Shannon. Sloan spread a rumor about Shannon having a disease. (The mature response is to hold the douche bag responsible the girl is irrelevant at that point)So fast forward:Ten some years later. Sloan is still talking a load of bs about Shannon. Phycology 101 : This screams insecurity on the Sloan’s part. It’s not a good look to put down other women. As a matter of fact, I had more respect for Shannon for not saying anything back. Ten years has gone by. Something is not right if you can’t move on.But that’s not it. Sloan (main character) likes Shannon’s boyfriend Nate. But this Warren shows up and she is head over heels for him. instead Sloan tosses Nate aside while constantly berating him about dating Shannon. But then good ol Nate takes care of Sloan (because Warren her boyfriend asked him too) because she was seriously ill. Nate slept next to her while she was ill. (it wasn’t like he was naked in bed with her or pawing at her while she lay ill) But somehow Sloan thought it would be a great idea to tell Warren Nate slept in her bed. I get the whole have two guys fight over a woman thing can be exciting. But when the woman orchestrates the fight, to get two men jealous, then how do I the reader believe the love is even real? It was forced. The heroine is controlling the outcome. There are ways to have two guys fight over a woman without the woman orchestrating the fight. I just found it hard to be on the heroines side because she played a lot of games.

The premise of this book sounded amazing and I was eager to dive in. It started off good but about a quarter of the way through I started to severely dislike two of the MC's - Nathan and Sloan.First, I'm going to say that I knew this was going to be a love triangle going in...and that was ok. What I didn't know was that Nathan was already in a relationship when he met Sloan. I absolutely hate cheating and when Nathan made no qualms about hiding the fact that he was in a relationship (6 months) I figured "ok, so he'll take the protector and defender stance which fits because he is a cop..." Well, thats not exactly what happened. He started omitting things like where he was and who he was with almost immediately. He then started ditching his girlfriend for Sloan. All of this didn't sit right with me. Finally when we meet his girlfriend we find out that she is Sloan's high school nemesis. I think the author tried to use this to get us to feel that Sloan was getting some type of revenge considering Stephanie stole Sloan's boyfriend in high school - side note is that these characters are in their late 20's and they were teens when the boyfriend stealing happened -- additional side note, it takes two to cheat...kids do stupid stuff when at that age and holding onto a grudge for 10 years is extremely childish. I should also note that Stephanie treated Sloan fine upon their re-meeting. She didn't belittle her or talk down to her. She treated her the way an adult would, HOWEVER, Sloan and her best friend repeatedly made fun of Stephanie and made sure to rub it in her face when Nathan and Sloan were spending time together. Furthermore, Nathan didn't do anything to defend or stand up for Stephanie..he just let this happen. Ultimately all this did was leave a bad taste in my mouth for Nathan and Sloan and I felt horrible for Stephanie.As for Sloan's character in the beginning I found her likable. She was sarcastic and witty and came off as a strong character. But due to what I mentioned above by 1/2 the way through the book I found her extremely unlikable and shallow. Her witty comments and dirt slinging became insufferable and totally ruined her character. As if all of that is not enough when Warren entered the picture (2/3rd way through the book) she felt an immediate attraction to him BUT continued to string Nathan along. Yes, I know they were all working together on the case but her and Nathan kissed, kept it a secret, and continued to "be close".For Warren...he was an ok character. Considering how late he entered the story it was hard to get a feel on him except to know that him and Sloan are alike but are opposites. They have a crazy spark between them and suffer horrible migraines when they separate. I found him to be a bit of a push over though consider he knows that Nathan wants Sloan and doesn't really appear to worried about it - yes, they exchange words and threats but ultimately he just lets it go.I hate not completing a series so I went ahead and downloaded the sample of the second book "The Siren" but only made it to the middle of the first chapter. At that point Warren had moved into Sloan's house (uprooted his life to do so I remind you...), they were having smex BUT Sloan was still talking about the fact that Nathan took a bullet for her and that means he must love her - honey, he's a cop...he did it protecting you - and how she just didn't know what to do with that. Dear God...I wanted to strangle the woman and I realized that I really loathed her. What was even worse was that Nathan was still hanging around every day and was STILL with his girlfriend. Nathan had told Sloan that he wanted her BUT was still with Stephanie! I know some people have stated the liked the characters but seriously...how is this guy or Sloan likable? While there is no physical cheating Nathan is emotionally cheating on his girlfriend continually. Sloan knows this helps perpetuate it and ultimately she is cheating on Warren - I consider it cheating because Sloan and Warren are having smex regularly and talk about how they can't be without each other (Hell...she considered moving to another state with him!!). They even refer to each other as bf/gf...THEY ARE IN A RELATIONSHIP!!Last but not least...I know I'm in the minority and I'm not bashing anyone for liking the characters. For me, it just didn't work. Overall the story had great promise but I don't think I could really get into it due to my distaste of Nathan and Sloan. Writing was ok but nothing fancy or enthralling. It was really only the premise that had me interested.

This was amazing!I haven't laughed in such a long time in a murder mystery with a love triangle. Usually those things are beyond intense, and one love interest with bodies falling like flies is enough on a girl, but Sloan's got two and ten.The writing was great with Sloan's POV and her angst about people finding out what she can do felt so realistic, especially with the responses she got. That's why I loved it even more when she handled it like a boss, and took it with a grace that had nothing on her gift of... er, collecting? It's so important for me to get into a book, and I fell right through, reading til my eyelids gave out and finishing up as soon as I woke up. It was that good.The murder mystery was interesting with all the different characters coming and going, but I loved the connection between Sloan and Warren. So much going on with that; I love how smoothly it was delivered. Not once was I nervous about their relationship, and I definitely didn't have any bad feelings when she was with Nathan. If you can create a (and I use this word lightly) multiple relationship among two guys and still make it all work harmoniously and stuff, you are a writing deity.On top of the murder and sexy men, I also enjoyed seeing Sloan's struggles with wanting a normal life she worked hard for and doing what was right. At times I got annoyed (just once, I swear) but her best friend, Adrienne, was right there to clear it all up for her (Bless you, Adrienne). The characters were all adorable with enough presence to move the story along and bring the story itself out of the love-triangle situation and back into the case. Nathan and Warren were so genuine that I honestly had a hard time choosing one in the beginning.This story is filled with so many awesome things, a mystery with a creepy set of guys to point fingers at, a party-hardy best friend, hot guys who mean well, love, and the type of fear that one's brain can only attempt to put a face to if it means sleeping a little better at night... or not.A seriously definite recommend. You'll be missing out on thrills and laughs.

I agree with David F 's review. I am fairly new to amateur radio and also recently received my (first level) Technician's license. I do not have a background in radio or electronics but was interested in moving up to the (second level) General license.This ARRL book, like the Technican's book, provides the information needed to pass the current FCC General exam (always choose the latest edition for current exam information), along with every question on the exam and the correct answers. Technical information is provided in relatively small chunks, in a manner that is fairly easy to learn and understand.Due to the contents of the exam, some of the material is quite technical and some (such as which frequencies are assigned for specific uses) simply must be memorized. But the book does try and explain other exam material (such as circuits, components, antennas, etc.) and gives examples.Again, this book will not teach you everything about ham radio but will help you pass the FCC General license test. It can be used as a self study guide for someone with a technical background, or together with a course taught by a local radio club to really learn the material.

I just passed the General test using only this book and an exam site online. Same question pool but it was just easier to read the questions online instead of flipping through the book.Read the book cover to cover. Stop and answer the questions when prompted. Don't move on until you understand the material. Review the question pool over and over. Done.Please don't just memorize the questions in the book and take the test. You are just hurting yourself and other Ham's who understand the hobby. But I digress...This book covers every topic necessary to pass the test. The is the second tier of Ham license and the book does expect you to know the basics of amateur radio as well as have a good grasp of basic electronics and electronic theory. It hits heavily on radio wave propagation, electric principles, circuit components and antennas. The intent in my opinion is to really make sure you won't screw up once you start hitting HF bands and start using the higher end equipment.Buying this for the test is a no-brainer.The test was much harder than the Technician test but if you study and understand the material presented in the book you will pass easily.

I am just another voice adding my opinion to an already well reviewed book. I bought this book and ran through it pretty quickly to prepare for the general exam. It is laid out fairly well (not by question set though) and the pool in the back is great. The book boasts detailed question explanations which it does, just not right next to the question. Each question references the page number in the book which has the information relating to the question. So, it references where you can find the answer but does not explain each individual question separately. However, there is another book put out by the arrl I think that does that, the Q&A general book. I like this book because I want to learn how to be a better operator and not just how to pass a written multiple choice exam. Anyways, great book and amazon has had it on sale for some time now, so pick it up and upgrade, you will be glad you did. With a little work, you could upgrade in a few weeks tops.

I agree with many of the reviews here and won't bore you with a rehash of their good info. I just passed my General test today and did well, and as someone who has to work at their studies, wanted to recommend this reference and maybe offer some advice.I found a path that really worked for me, someone who travels a lot and has a lot of things going on in life. I started studying with the W5YI Gordon West book and audio CDs, which are entertaining and make learning fun and easy. Once done with that, I went through this reference, which gave greater detail and allowed me to go from "memorizing" to "understanding." Finally, I found the practice tests at KB0MGA dot net to be a great way to help focus in on things that just took me a bit longer to get down.So, if you are studying for the General test, this book is a must. Good luck on your test, and looking forward to hearing you on the air.Brian

I passed my General test with it. The material is written so that it flows from the Tech book. A problem that I feel could be improved is that it lists material in a cold presentation. Why and how examples are parts that could be improved on. Being new to ham radio, obviously I hadn't done HF with a tech ticket. I took this exam without understanding a lot of what I memorized. Now, I understand it better and can relate to the text a lot better. The electronics part was difficult for me, and after attempting to memorize a lot of equations,I was surprised as how little of it was actually on the test. While old timers may argue the case, I honestly don't see the need to understand component boards to the extent in the book. While I might make some baluns, and other stuff, I don't plan on building my own radio.

CAUTIONThis is the SIXTH Edition of the General Class License Manual that is not the current study guide. The current is the SEVENTH and will be superseded on July 1, 2015. Some of the material caries over but it may make a difference in passing your exam.You are warned.CAUTION.[Amazon: please work on your sorting algorithm. If I ask for the 7th edition I do not want to see other versions in the main search.]

I can't quibble with the other reviews. However, like the Tech Manual, this one is incomplete. Too little in-depth explanation about HF equipment, in particular.The Gordon West General manual, for review purposes only, is a great complement to the ARRL book. The two books together allow a self-study student to master the exam content.All of that said, radio is a hands-on, visual and auditory learning experience. Passing the exam is just getting your ticket punched to allow you the privilege of playing.

These ARRL training materials are always good. Make sure to check the version when ordering. This one is current in 2017.

Oh man! Mystery, supernatural, alternate history, and a touch of steamfunk – this tale of murder and the supernatural is simply amazing! The division of the US is a great concept and woven into the tale. No info dumps here! Strange murders bring paranormal detective Mona Livelong into a wild tale of murder and mayhem with tidbits of traditional African and southern supernatural traditions leading to a compelling end.Note: there's some sex in the story, I'd put it into the New Adult range (you all know I hate romance and erotica) and not explicit (thank goodness!). A little more detailed than "they kissed," but then they wake in the morning without all the sticky details, LOL!I highly recommend this story and am adding the next books – yes, there's more! – to my wish list!! I read this entire story in one sitting. So much for going to bed early!

The overall background is replete with steam powered machines, nifty clockwork gadgetry, and stunning fashion reminiscent of the late 19th century. The events in the story occur in the 1970s. The United States is split into two nations, one a ardently white supremacist regime, the other, striving for racial equality, but burdened by persistent, customary racism. The alternate geo-political context plays every bit as crucial a role in this novel as the demons, monsters, gods and goddesses that populate its pages.Mona Livelong is smart, skilled and courageous. She's also a warrior who's not intimidated by the evil she confronts or the danger intrinsic to her job. This book is a truly enjoyable read, bearing the titillating promise of a sequel...better yet, a series.

A fascinating mix of steamfunk, alternate history, and supernatural horror. The world Valjeanne Jeffers has created in this novel is complex and intriguing, but the focus here is on the story, which kept me turning pages late into the night. Mona Livelong is a worthy addition to the tradition of occult detective literature. I'm looking forward to reading the next novel in this series, and I hope there will be a third.

This book literally had me at the edge of my seat. I have the bruises on my butt cheeks when I hit the floor as proof. Valjeanne Jeffers beautifully crafted several different scenarios together creating a fantastic story and a wonderful character in Mona Livelong. On top of that, Jeffers had woven a romance into the story that felt believable.Mona Livelong is now one of my favorite fictional characters. Can't wait until I can get my hands on Mona Livelong 2

In many ways, this is the best installment in the series. From the first page, picking up where book 5 left off, it's the Mist Village against foes which are out of their weight class, and there is no way out but through. The book is merciless. Richter and his village are being pulled into conflicts and the tension and weight of choices are palpable. Time matters. Decisions to delay or engage matter. His alliances are two-edged swords, demanding more of him, not just giving. Richter has to call on everything he and his allies have built over the past five books and -- very satisfyingly -- his lieutenants have grown into their roles (Caulder, Terrod, Tabia, ...). It isn't Richter against a dungeon or a crypt mistress or a spider queen, or even a rock troll. It's the Mist Village gathering and striking at an existential threat before it is too late if it is not already.

First, the pros. I like the writing style, here. It is fairly well written, which is a big plus for this particular genre. The main character is likeable and relatable, and the storylines are interesting. However...In most of the books, the beginning of the story sets up a new Quest that you think will be the focus of the story...and yet, it rarely is. The beginning of each book generally introduces a long-term Quest that is then barely touched upon for the rest of the story. By the end of this book, there are several quests that were introduced all the way back in the very first book of the series that have barely been touched, much less completed. Often, the title of the book will make you think that you know what the book is going to be about...but you would be wrong. There are no alliances formed in the title Alliances, the catacombs are not explored in the book Catacombs.What I'd really love to see is of the earlier quests get completed, so we get the feeling that both the book and the character are moving forward. Instead, it all feels fairly random, and you are left at the end of each book with a feeling of incompletion.

I really like how this series is progressing. The attention to detail is superb, though maybe a tad bit too detailed (or it could just be me, lol).Aleron continues to surprise me in they way his story goes in unintended arcs.I do wish that at some time he takes a break from constant battles in just the Mist Village area to a bit more of the actual world. Bring Richter some place he doesn't have all of the control he usually wields. I'd also like to see a bit more of an unconventional alliance thing happen at some time, like make friends with normally hostile race and convert them to his side.Just my thoughts.Overall though, damn good series and while Aleron's title might be a bit presumptuous or ostentatious, he does seriously give good credit to the title. I think we can let him keep it for now, lol.

This was the first book of this writing style I read. I will say that I am hooked and absolutely will be reading more. I couldn't believe the detail the author used and how he made sure you understood the characters.I loved the progression of all of the characters and the storyline. It takes alot for me to be hooked on a book so hard that I can't put it down and this one did that for me. To the point that my wife yelled at me for not paying attention to her. I felt like I was right beside Richter through the whole book.I will definitely be referring my friends to this series

Chaos Seeds Books are brilliantly written. Enjoyable, believable, and the characters are well developed.I've read a lot of good stories about characters who get put through a lot, or are overpowered, underpowered, and get the feet chopped off but still continue walking kinda of thing. However, these books keep it reasonably real. Nobody wants to read about a hero loser. We want our hero to win, not get everything they want and become an OVERPOWERED GOD after two chapters.This series was a DELIGHT to read. I've read series 1 and 2 of other books where they kill off the main characters beloved companion or pet. While bad things happen even to GOOD HERO's.. I put the books down at that point and don't continue the series. This series is every bit deserving of the 5 stars, because it gives the reader and very enjoyable, realistic story of the life of the main character and his companions. High recommend this to anyone that enjoys fantasy as much as I do.

I can't say enough good things about this book, and this whole series. This was my first exposure to LitRPG, and I came across it totally by accident. I downloaded book 1 on my Kindle, then proceeded to spend the entire weekend burning thru the series. The writing is top notch, and I was completely drawn into the story line. I love the village-building aspect, as well as the characters themselves. The humorous interplay between the hero and his companions makes me chuckle. As a gamer (and a reader) for nearly 4 decades now, I'm thrilled by this new genre and the possibilities it provides.Since discovering the genre a few weeks ago, I have burned through several series by authors like G. Akella, Vasily Mahanenko, Christopher Booth, Michael Chatfield, and D. Rus. While I've enjoyed them all, I recommend Chaos Seeds above all others. If you've read this series and are waiting for the next release, maybe check out some of these other authors. And tell your friends. More people should be able to enjoy these books!

The forty-year-old poet was also, though he could not have known it, in his last year of life; by the end of 1849, he would die, under mysterious circumstances and from unknown causes, in a Baltimore hospital. How fitting, then, that Paul Collins has taken the phrase "The Fever Called Living" and made it the subtitle of this brief Poe biography."Edgar Allan Poe: The Fever Called Living," with only 107 pages of text, is brief by design. Collins’s book is part of the "Icons" series of concise biographies published by New Harvest, an imprint of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Books published in the series so far include biographies of Jesus of Nazareth, Joseph Stalin, Lucian Freud, J.D. Salinger, Vincent Van Gogh, Alfred Hitchcock, Hannah Arendt, Paul of Tarsus, David Lynch, Benazir Bhutto, and of course Edgar Allan Poe – truly an eclectic list of icons.It is fortunate – and striking, considering the book’s status as part of a series called “Icons” – that Collins, a professor of English at Portland State University, takes the reader’s focus away from Poe as icon, and invites the reader to concentrate on Poe as a hard-working writer. This theme is emphasized right from the book’s beginning; Collins opens with the familiar though now-lapsed tradition of the “Poe Toaster’s” annual late-night visits to Poe’s Baltimore grave on the anniversary of Poe’s birth. But then Collins encourages us to ignore the colorful manifestations of EAP fan culture embodied by the Poe Toaster, “and instead watch the Baltimore Sun reporter taking notes from the perimeter. There, and not amid the weathered tombstones, is the reality of the living and working writer. Poe’s reputation was not earned through tragedy, but in spite of it: he was a careful craftsman of words, and a man whose deep dedication to understanding art is often obscured by the drama around his life” (p. 1).I like that focus and emphasis. Widespread awareness of the difficult circumstances of Poe’s life has no doubt done much to give Poe his, well, iconic status as an embodiment of the Romantic artist whose bleeding heart beats on through one tragedy after another. But Poe was a writer first and foremost, and one who produced some of the greatest American literature, in a variety of genres, under the most difficult circumstances imaginable. That part of Poe’s story is inspiring.Considering the brevity of "Edgar Allan Poe: The Fever Called Living," it is doubly impressive that Collins provides persuasive explanations for a number of the mysteries surrounding Poe’s life. When, for example, Collins considers biographers’ puzzlement at the odd scenario of Poe’s foster father John Allan sending the young Poe to the University of Virginia without sufficient funds to study there, Collins suggests that “It is hardly a mystery to any first-generation student. John Allan was an immigrant who never attended college; what he understood was business, secondary schools, and the occasional tutor fee….Of the time and money necessary for college, and its cultivation of sheer intellectual curiosity, he was ignorant” (p. 13).It is a sensible explanation; and that freshness of perspective marks many parts of this biography, as when Collins, looking at Poe’s time as an enlisted man in the United States Army, suggests that “the U.S. Army has the distinction of being the only institution to steadily support and appreciate the talents of Edgar Allan Poe while he was still alive” (p. 20).Collins takes particular care in tracing the development of Poe’s literary art. Poe’s early prose, Collins suggests, while following the sensationalist literary norms of his time, “still lacked a compelling narrator. In particular, a charismatic, manic first-person presence was needed to bring alive Poe’s use of dread and terrified sensation”, because, “though Poe could mock the form [of sensationalism], he hadn’t learned how to transcend it” (p. 25). In contrast, by the time of Poe’s failed verse drama "Politian" (1835), the young writer was learning from his prior mistakes: “With his genius at haunting narrators and an emerging commitment to plot structure, Poe now was growing closer to a mastery of his art” (p. 31).As mentioned above, Collins concentrates well on the practicalities of Poe’s life as a working author. Knowing the vagaries of a writing life – the book is dedicated to Dave Eggers, “who gave me my first break as a writer” – Collins looks at how Poe’s life choices affected his career. When it comes to Poe’s penchant for writing often savage reviews of the work of fellow authors, for instance, Collins writes that “The careers of the author and the reviewer mix with deceptive and dangerous ease. Reviews are quick but paltry money, distracting from the work that makes a writer’s reputation; they are transient in their effect on readers, but lasting in their damage to a writer’s professional relations” (p. 34). Similarly, aspiring writers who think they will make their first mark in short stories before going on to write The Great American Novel might benefit from Collins’s somber advice, in the context of publishers’ repeated rejections of Poe’s proposals of a volume of his short stories, that “authors receive precisely the same rejections from publishers even today. Short fiction sells poorly and is an extravagance barely tolerated even in established writers” (p. 35). So get back to work on that novel, alright?As any Poe biographer should do, Collins recognizes Poe’s singular achievements. Aptly, Collins describes Poe’s 1841 short story “The Murders in the Rue Morgue,” the world’s first true mystery story in the modern sense, as “initiating the world’s most popular genre of fiction”, and therefore as “literally the most influential short story of the nineteenth century” (p. 49). And his later tale of ratiocination “The Purloined Letter” (1844), featuring as it did the same detective character of C. Auguste Dupin, arguably went even further in placing “deductive analysis and problem solving at the center” of the mystery story; “The Purloined Letter” illustrates how the appeal of the mystery genre lies not in bloodshed or violence, but rather in “the bringing of order to disorder, and causality to the seemingly inexplicable” (pp. 59-60)."Edgar Allan Poe: The Fever Called Living" is, as mentioned above, brief; indeed, I would hazard a surmise that authors writing for the Icons series are told very strictly what the word limit for books in this series is. But Collins tells Poe’s sad and compelling story in a concise and effective manner. Edgar Allan Poe may have conquered “the fever called ‘Living’” in 1849, but the literature he wrote has transcended the passage of time.

Curiously, a few days after I started reading this book, I took one of those crazy pointless tests that claimed to determine which writer from history I'd have liked the best. I laughed when it came up "Poe" because I have so many memories of reading his books at different times in my life. He himself would have enjoyed the story of how my dad caught me reading "The Tell Tale Heart" by flashlight under the covers at about ag3 10. My dad took the book away and ordered my mother to take it back to the public library. It was right when the investigators come to check out the details. I was FRENZIED to find out what happens...but didn't read the balance for more than a year (because I couldn't get my hands on the book!) I am LOVING Paul Collins' descriptive narrative of Poe's life and the colorful way he handles the details. He's a good writer, and he has a worthy subject.

Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most intriguing writers in American literature. His short life (he died at 40) was productive and inventive. He’s often credited with the invention of the detective story (i.e. “Murders in the Rue Morgue”), and was prolific as a writer of stories, poetry, and criticism. We know him for macabre tales like “Tell-Tale Heart” and the poem, “The Raven.” Few authors invoke such a benighted image.Yet the popular image of Poe is a bit of a dark caricature, reflecting truths but exaggerating features for effect. Part of this exaggeration probably owes to our collective desire to romanticize the tortured artist – and Poe is as tortured as they come. However, some of the exaggeration of Poe’s faults owe to the fact that he was a harsh critic, and at least one of the authors who felt the sting of his pen found an opportunity to amplify the “drug-addled lunatic” aspect of Poe’s nature in a biography after the great author’s death. That’s not to deny that Poe had an addictive personality. He was both an alcoholic and prone to gambling away whatever funds graced his pockets.This short biography (less than 150pp.) gives one insight into Poe’s life from birth to death in five chapters. The first of these chapters describes Poe’s childhood, which was marred by the death of his mother, abandonment by his father, and being taken in -- but not adopted -- by a foster couple. Granted the foster couple was wealthy, but Poe’s foster-father could be a harsh man and the uncertainty of not being formally adopted seemed to have weighed on Poe’s mind.The middle chapters give special attention to Poe’s life as a writer, noting under what circumstances he was published, starting with a self-published chap book and moving through to becoming one of America’s great men of letters (though he never made enough money to live in comfort.) Poe famously married a cousin who was very young (though of legal age) at the time, and we get some insight into that relationship, which ended not terribly long before his own death. The last chapter gives the details of Poe’s demise.I found this book interesting and educational. Collins neither gets lost in the minutiae nor give’s Poe’s life short shrift, and it feels as though he reveals the true Poe and not the T-shirt version. I would recommend this book for fans of Poe’s work and for those who are interested in the literary history of America.

This is relatively short book that delivers a great deal of information about the life of Edgar Allan Poe. While other biographies go on and on, providing reams of plodding minutia, this presentation gave me all I really cared to know about Poe while informing me about many things I didn’t know about Poe before. And it did that in a manner that kept my attention. Where did his middle name, Allan, come from? What was his marriage to his 13 year old cousin all about? I had vague ideas about his time at West Point, and his having lived in Richmond and Baltimore and New York City. In fact, years ago I happened across his grave in Baltimore, but didn’t understand then what I was really seeing. Poe’s life of incredible creativity and unappreciated genius is an interesting and fascinating story told by Collins in an enjoyable, informative and interesting way.

Great ideas, perspectives and look at sustainability within modern day business context

I wish I had this book 3 years ago! I think it might have influenced how I conducted search for a graduate program, as well as my search for employment. Regardless, this book is still a relevant and worthwhile read. Mohin effectively simplifies the complexities of sustainability and makes the topic manageable and approachable. There is plenty of good information on how to get a foot in the door, how to manage your position once you're there, and how to have an impact regardless of what your function is or where you are in your career. I especially enjoyed the added context and insider tips Mohin provides. The book includes a good dose of suggestions for handling organizational behavior issues involved when effecting change within an organization. The style is conversational and accessible, with plenty of actionable advice useful for a variety of professionals.

This is a great book for everybody wanting to work or working in the field of social responsibility or sustainability as it gives a complete overview of all aspects of sustainability and practical tips on how you can build a sustainability role and/or department in your company. I especially like the two chapters about supplier responsibility as this has become a main material issue for most companies. This book is also very down to earth; people with a real passion and broad understanding of sustainability can become sustainability managers as long as they stay well informed about the issues and have the capability to lead through influence.

Loved loved this book. A World War 2 book set in England, it was very informative about the Blitz and what they went thru. Sad, dark times. A friend of mine was born in England in 1938 and lived thru the war years in England. She has told a lot of what happened to her and her family. She was one of the children that was moved out of London to live with a family away from the bombing. She was five years old, suitcase (with a change of clothes and extra pair of shoes) in hand and name tag on dress. Her mother took her to the train station and put her on train with hundreds of other children. We can’t imagine how it was living during this time. I love to read about it. This book wasn’t about the children, it was about other things that happened during war torn England and was very very good. Great writer 🤗🤗💕

I had trouble putting the book down. It was interesting and heartbreaking to get so involved in the girls !ives. A great book!

I loved the characters in this story. These things that happened in the story happen to day with families. The love they shared was a special part because of how forgiving one has to be at times

This was an incredibly sad book but had a wonderful ending. I so enjoyed the story behind the sisters being dropped off at the orphanage and how their life evolved once they were out. It was intense at times, kept you turning pages. It didn’t bring tears but had me interested the entire time. I certainly recommend it and I’m anxious for her next novel to be released.

This was a heart wrenching tale of two sisters during World War II. The life altering decisions that were made and how they supported each other. Loved the book and will recommend it to all.

Two sisters left in an orphanage know nothing of their past. They struggle through so many wartime experiences and problems. Their questions of 'who', 'what', and 'why' are ever present in their lives as they face the perils and loss that a war creates.

I could not put the book down. The tale of the love between the sisters, the brother in law and Etty's husband is reqlly something. There's a twist at the end but I cant wish for a different ending. Kudos to Ms. Dickson.

Page turner! Really showed what it was like for the people in England during the war. A few of the words were a little hard to follow, but it still shied life then. Great life lessons actually. Looking forward to another one of her books.
