Introduction   The Qur'an is God’s word which He revealed to Prophet Muhammad through the Angel Gabriel. God had earlier revealed scriptures to different prophets, including the Torah, the Psalms and the Gospel. The Qur’an is clearly intended to be God’s final message to mankind, setting out the way of life God wants people to lead. It sets their lives on the right course and ensures their happiness in this world and the next. In this present life, they have through God’s message what gives them satisfaction of their physical and spiritual needs, as well as a sense of complete fulfilment. Implementation of the Qur'an in this present life ensures for them admittance into heaven in the life to come. This means a second life of perfect bliss and happiness, as well as enjoyment of what is even better, namely that God is pleased with them.   The Qur’an was revealed in parts during the period from the beginning of Muhammad’s prophethood in 610 to shortly before he passed away in 632. Although the revelations given to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) included much more than the Qur’an. The Qur’an is given in God’s own word, while the rest of His revelation was expressed by Prophet Muhammad in his words and style. The two complement each other and together form the Islamic message.   The Qur’an is God’s own word, and it has been preserved in its original form over the fourteen centuries of Islamic history. This is due, first and foremost, to the fact that God has guaranteed its preservation: ‘It is We Ourselves who have bestowed this reminder from on high, and it is We who shall preserve it intact’. (15: 9) When the Prophet received a surah or a passage of the Qur’an, he immediately dictated it to one or more of his scribes. Many of his companions memorised it. When he passed away, his successor as head of the Muslim state, Abu Bakr, ordered the collation of a complete copy of the Qur’an to serve as reference. This was a meticulous exercise completed during Abu Bakr’s reign which lasted less than two years. The task was entrusted to Zayd ibn Thabit who had learnt the complete Qur’an by heart under the Prophet’s own instruction and guidance. Zayd gathered the written parts together, requiring two independent witnesses to testify that they were present when the Prophet dictated it to the scribe who kept it. Thus, authenticity was perfectly assured through the four people involved up to that point: the scribe, the two witnesses and Zayd, plus the written copy. However, Abu Bakr, [Umar, [Uthman and [Ali, all of whom knew the full Qur’an by heart, further checked the complete copy. The whole exercise was repeated again less than fifteen years later, when reference copies were produced by a committee headed by Zayd himself and who was helped by three more of the Prophet’s companions who also knew the Qur’an by heart. These copies were checked against the original copy collated during Abu Bakr’s reign. A copy was then sent to each of the main cities of the Muslim state, with a reciter who memorised the Qur’an in full to teach people its proper recitation.   The Qur’an is recited every day by every Muslim who keeps up his or her prayer. It is recited in prayer and at other times, because its recitation is an act of worship. Millions of people have learned its entirety by heart throughout every generation since it was first revealed 1,400 years ago. Nearly every Muslim memorises parts of it, and most recite a portion of it every day. Those who know it by heart read it in full once a week in order to retain it in their immediate memory. None feels this to be a demanding task, even though it takes at least an hour and a half every day. On the contrary, they approach it with the eagerness of one who feels it adds to their happiness.   No religious book is read and recited or listened to as frequently as the Qur’an. Yet those who recite it are always eager to do more. The question is whether this is due only to the religious aspect or if there is something more about the Qur’an? The religious factor is undoubtedly very important, but what is there about the Qur’an that attracts non-Muslim Arabs to memorise some passages of it? Indeed, some of them read it in its entirety time after time.   We need to remember that the Qur’an was revealed during a time when the Arabs were very proud of their language and used it so skilfully as to include fine forms of expressive speech. Moreover, they attached great importance to poetry. As they were largely unlettered people, poetry was the way they recorded their history, highlighted their bright moments, expressed their sorrows, extolled the merits of their departed elders, described their happiest events, reviled their enemies and recorded the lessons they learnt through hard experience. They chanted it in their social gatherings, and through poetry their news travelled from one part of Arabia to another. It also served as their formal and social media. What is special about Arabic poetry is that a poem may run into hundreds of lines, maintaining the same metre and rhyme, without giving even a hint of affectation or the rhyming word sounding laboured. In this they benefited by the fact that Arabic is a derivative language, which means that a three-consonant root can generate words in double figures in the forms of verbs, nouns, adjectives and adverbs bearing the same meaning as the root and adding varying connotations. For example, if we take the Arabic root h-d-th, meaning to do and to speak, we may derive the following fifteen words: happened, narrated, speaker, interlocutor, spokesman, spoken statement, converse, conversation, accident, recent, made something new, invented a new thing, event, innovated, recently, and the causer of an event.[1] Furthermore, the root will also provide several more words delivering yet greater subtleties in each instance.   In the tribal society of Arabia, with tribes often raiding each other for plunder or revenge, the rise of a poet was an occasion for great celebration, because he could always highlight the merits of his tribe and revile its opponents. The fact that poetry is easily memorised and survives for a considerable length of time added to its importance.   When Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) recited passages of the Qur’an to the Arabs, in his efforts to advocate his message, they could not place it in any form of speech they knew. For certain, they realised that, despite its use of rhyme at times and having rhythm, it was not poetry. The Prophet appreciated poetry and could distinguish what was fine and what was of low standard, and he listened to some recitals of fine poetry, but he never expressed himself in any form that could be described as akin to poetry. He did not even quote any line of poetry in his speech. Discerning Arabs were quick to recognise that the Qur’an was of a much superior quality than even the finest of their poetry. Hence, when anyone suggested that his opponents should describe Muhammad as a poet, the suggestion was rejected out of hand. Having listened to two passages of the Qur’an, al-Mafruq ibn [Amr, the head of the major Arabian tribe, the Shayban, said to the Prophet: ‘What you say is not the word of a human being. Had it been human speech we would have recognised it’.[2]   One of the finest aspects of the Qur’an’s style is the combination of word economy and expansive expression. Many literary critics have expressed wonder at how the Qur’an presents its ideas with the number of words it uses: it is a case of full meaning with minimum words, and this is consistent throughout, even when it provides detailed legislation. One clear example is the system of inheritance which assigns shares to different heirs, covering all situations and relations that may arise in any family and leaving no room for dispute. The whole system is outlined in verses 11, 12 and 176 of the fourth surah, Women. Together these verses use no more than 209 words in 22 lines.   The Qur’an tells stories of earlier prophets and their communities. Brevity is again a main feature of its style. In the story of the birth of Jesus in Surah 19, only seven words separate the angel’s announcement to Mary that he was to give her a son and her being in labour. Yet her trouble at her virgin pregnancy and the need to hide from curious eyes is perfectly accounted for. Surah 12 devotes 98 of its 111 verses to the story of Prophet Joseph, from his childhood to the reunion with his parents after he was appointed to a high position in the government of Egypt. The story runs in 28 scenes and there are gaps between some of them and at times the gap could stretch over several years. Yet at no point does the reciter or the listener feel that any part of the story is left out. On the contrary, they feel that they are given all necessary details. For example, one scene closes with Joseph’s brothers in Egypt finding themselves at a loss because of the arrest of their youngest brother when they had most solemnly pledged to their father that they would return him safely. Their eldest is telling them to go back and explain what happened to their father and give him all the necessary evidence confirming the truth of their report. The next scene opens immediately, with their father giving his reaction to their report. Thus, their journey from Egypt to Palestine, their feelings as they arrived, their reluctance to speak to their father as they were conscious of their guilt over Joseph’s disappearance are all left out, but the story is felt to be complete. Furthermore, the story identifies lessons to be learned and clearly illustrates concepts for believers to uphold.    A unique feature of the Qur’an’s style is that outlined by Sayyid Qutb in his pioneering work Artistic Imagery in the Qur’an, published in 1945. Qutb says:   Painting images is the Qur’an’s preferred method of expression. It presents abstract concepts, psychological feelings, real events, visible scenes, people’s types and human nature in clear images that we can mentally see before us. It then gives the painted image real life and successive movement. It thus gives the abstract idea shape or movement; presents a psychological feeling in a scene or a painting; shows human nature and types of people alive before our very eyes. Events, scenes and stories are all shown full of life and movement. When dialogue is added to these, all elements are completed for us to imagine what is on show. Once the Qur’an starts its presentation of these, the reciter and listeners become the audience watching the story unfold. They are transported to the stage where the story took place or where the event will happen. As one scene or movement follows another, listeners forget that they are merely listening to words being recited. Instead, they feel that they are actually watching those very scenes and events.[3]   An excellent translator will be able to express the ideas and meanings of the author and put these in a way that enables the reader in the target language to fully understand the original text. However, each language has its own characteristics and what is easily manipulated in one language may not be achievable in another. This feature of the Qur’anic style is one of the difficulties that a translator of the Qur’an faces. Another aspect of the Qur’anic style is its rhythm. Rhythm runs throughout the Qur’an, and it varies to suit the nature of the surah and its subject matter. Indeed it varies within the same surah, even in shorter ones. Sometimes the beat is strong and fast, while at others it is soft and slow. At other times these two combinations are reversed. Yet there is no metre to adhere to anywhere. Arabic poetry has no less than 17 different metres, but none of them is employed in the Qur’an. Nevertheless, one only needs to listen to the Qur’an being recited by an expert reciter to realise that music runs throughout it. At least two translators of the Qur’an were largely motivated to undertake the task by their love of its music. These were the late Arthur Arberry and N.J. Dawood; neither of whom was a Muslim, and both tried to give rhythm to their texts, despite the fact that their approaches were fundamentally different. In several conversations with Mr Dawood, he spoke to me about his feelings when he listened to a good recitation of the Qur’an. Professor Arberry wrote in the Introduction to his translation:   There is a repertory of familiar themes running through the whole Koran; each Sura elaborates or adumbrates one or more – often many – of these. Using the language of music, each Sura is a rhapsody composed of whole or fragmentary leitmotivs; the analogy is reinforced by the subtly varied rhythmical flow of the discourse… During the long months, the dark and light months, of labouring at this interpretation… I have been reliving those Ramadan nights of long ago, when I would sit on the veranda of my Gezira[4] house and listen entranced to the old, white-bearded Sheykh who chanted the Koran for the pious delectation of my neighbour.   We may say that the superior literary excellence of the Qur’anic style, its brevity, music and other unique aspects make the Qur’an very hard to translate, or even ‘untranslatable’. Yet there has been no shortage of attempts to translate the Qur’an. The first English translation by George Sale was published in 1734, followed in 1861 by Rodwell’s and in 1880 by Palmer’s. English translations by Muslims started to appear early in the 20th century, followed by two widely circulated versions; one by Abdullah Yusuf Ali and the other by Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall. Both appeared in the 1930s. Then Arberry’s and Dawood’s appeared in the 1950s. The later part of the 20th century saw the publication of several other translations, perhaps reaching double figures, and the trend continues in the present century. At least two have already appeared and I know of two more currently being prepared. Most of these are by Muslim scholars. Each of these translations, as well as the ones I have not mentioned, has its merits, particularly when we take their dates into consideration.   However, this multiplicity of rendering the same original text begs the question: why should anyone redo what has already been done? The answer is the feeling everyone who is familiar with both Arabic and English experiences: the product falls far short of what the original is like. How can it be otherwise when the text of the translation is the word of a human being while the original is the word of God?   Should a person who undertakes the task of producing a new translation of the Qur’an consult the work of those who preceded him in this endeavour? Undoubtedly he should, just as he looks through the commentaries produced by Muslim scholars over the centuries. There is no harm in using similar words. Indeed this is inevitable, because the original text is the same. Yet the method and style may be remarkably different.         *          *          *   Many years ago, a student who was preparing a Ph.D. thesis on Qur’anic translations asked me if I wished to produce a new translation of the Qur’an. My answer was definitely in the negative. Yet at the time I was heavily committed to the translation of In the Shade of the Qur’an, an 18-volume translation of Sayyid Qutb’s priceless commentary on the Qur’an. Needless to say, the work involved rendering the meaning of the Qur’an into English. Even when I finished that work, at the end of 2007, I had no intention of producing the translation of the Qur’an separately. However, many friends have encouraged me to do so, and this despite the reluctance I expressed given the great gulf between the Arabic text and the work I did.   I have now, however, yielded to these requests, accepting the counter argument that the Qur’an does its work and addresses people’s hearts even when it speaks to them only through the poor language of feeble humans. Its message comes across despite the many shortcomings of human expression. Even in the original, its address touches the hearts of Arabs who never went to school or learnt to read and write, despite the fact that their language is far removed from that of the people of Arabia at the time the Qur’an was revealed. Therefore, it is right to express the meaning of the Qur’an in today’s language, so that its message is more readily available to English readers. Therefore, I have now reappraised my earlier work and introduced some changes which, I hope, improve upon it.   I have endeavoured to put the meanings of the Qur’anic verses and surahs in simple and straightforward form, so that the 21st century reader may find it easy to access. I hope that in this way, my contribution is worthwhile. I am indebted to many of my predecessors and I hope that their work has helped me to avoid the pitfalls this task presents.   No one can or may translate the Qur’an without consulting the commentaries and interpretations written by renowned scholars over the fourteen centuries of Islamic history. As many sentences in the Qur’an are understood in more than one way, these commentaries may highlight meanings that are seen to be secondary in others. Translators may take one or the other, and as a result there will be differences in the way they render their meanings. On the other hand, translators themselves may read verses differently, or highlight certain shades of meaning more than others. All these are factors that have led to great variations in the way the meanings of the Qur’an are rendered in different translations. However, the overriding difficulty is that the power and richness of expression provided in the original Arabic text, as revealed by God Himself, cannot then be matched in human language.       *          *          * I have kept footnotes to the minimum, so as to allow the text to deliver its own core message. I realise that some verses and surahs must be understood against the background of the events they relate to, but as the Qur’an is a book for all time, I have not sought to give such explanations following our scholars’ agreed view that Qur’anic texts should be taken in their general meanings, rather than with the peculiarity of relevant events. The event only helps to understand the reason for revelation, but the message is everlasting. In my short introductions to the surahs I point out the events to which they relate, so that readers who wish to delve further into these can easily find their references.     [1] These Arabic words are: hadatha, haddatha, muhaddith, muhadith, mutahaddith, hadith, hadatha, muhadathah, hadeth, hadeeth, ahdatha, istahdath, hadath, mustahdath, hadeethan, and muhdith. [2] The two passages the Prophet recited to the Shayban group of pilgrims were verses 151-153 of Surah 6, and verse 90 of Surah 16. [3] Sayyid Qutb, Artistic Imagery in the Qur’an, p. 34. I've always enjoyed watching the witty banter of these two ladies with the quirky Christopher Kimball on ATK and appreciated the "no-fail" researched recipes as a result of their hard work. I love to cook and bake but have a limited amount of time to shop and spend time in the kitchen. I need reliable recipes that will be worth the time. It's easy to get caught up in blogs, personalities, and the latest cookbook, but sometimes you just need a simple and tasty collection of recipes that will get you and your family through the week. I've done the taco recipe twice, the pesto meatball recipe once, and the pumpkin bread recipe once with much success. There are a TON of ATK books out there along with a MYRIAD of Cook's Illustrated monthly/seasonal periodicals, so it's easy to get overwhelmed. Stick with the hand-picked recipes of this book and you will be delighted.Suggestion: Retitle the book to "Old Ironsides"Thank you Bridget and Julia!

Nice book but no new recipes. All of these are in The America's Test Kitchen Cookbook.

This is one of the best cookbooks ever...for me. It's full of recipes useful for everyday or for company. I love the fact that many of the recipes could be made easily from items readily on hand.

A wonderful cookbook from Bridget and Julia of Americas Test Kitchen. Tried and true recipes, come out delicious and look so nice. Love the personal touches in the book too.

This is a beautiful cookbook...beautiful photos and absolutely lovely and practical recipes that I am looking forward to making. One thing I cannot figure out, though, is "meatloaf mix." I want to make the "Pasta with Classic Bolognese" and it calls for 12 ounces of "meatloaf mix." I have never heard of this and there is nothing I can find in the cookbook that says what it is. I am sure I will get it figured out, but it is a bit frustrating. I don't want this to take away from the cookbook though, it is gorgeous and I wouldn't hesitate to give it as a gift.

Just received and made 2 recipes that were delicious! Great selection, you will be using this book all the time!

So, I am a few recipes into the book. I will say that the book has some minor steps missing from some of the recipes. If you are not a seasoned chef, this is not the book for you. These recipes are for people with a history of cooking or baking and with more than just basic knowledge of food prep and cooking. I love the ladies and and I love the recipes, but please just know that I have been cooking and baking for 40 years and I still had questions. Try and review the book first at your local library before you purchase.

Love when these two ladies bake together. They give such great hints and make some difficult things easy. I read the book the first day I got it and marked all the recipes I was going to make.

Islands on the Fringe: A Year of Micronesian Waves and Wanderers S. Jacques Stratton PhantaSea Books, 266 pages, (paperback) $22.49, 9780692192849 (Reviewed: March 2019)  S. Jacques Stratton's memoir offers a brief slice of his life, beginning in mid-1999, when he spent a year living and teaching at the College of Micronesia on the island of Pohnpei.  At the time, Stratton was recovering from a broken engagement--his fiancée wanted a more cosmopolitan life; he sought adventure and surfing--and Micronesia seemed to be the answer. The Los Angeles native knew he'd have to make adjustments, but didn't realize how extensive they would be. As a man on his flight to Pohnpei told him, "Life on the Fringe will alter your sensibilities. Once you acclimatize to the general degradation, you'll eat Spam straight from the can and call it breakfast!"  Spam from a can was the least of his adventures. The book details his interactions with teaching colleagues, students, natives and ex-pats who populate the island. There are tainted brownies, a traditional mud-like drink called sakau, a brush with a shark, and a seemingly lustful missionary's daughter who ends their very brief relationship by loudly and publicly declaring him a "sleazebag."  Several chapters are dominated by the author's love of surfing. While it's an integral part of his life, these passages can seem long and jargon-filled: "Enticed by a bloom of liquid morning glory, he angles into the pit, stands, and digs his heels into a backside bottom turn that slingshots him toward the inside section." Stratton's prose can also be too flowery: "...the dropping tide brings waves like crystal confections, bursting with a merengue [sic[ of cotton-puff foam spun from the reflections of cotton puff clouds."  On the plus side, the book features numerous photos that truly enhance the narrative, such as the interesting and picaresque shot accompanying the author's description of a 1,000-year-old archeological site.   This book will appeal most to readers interested in exotic travel destinations--and surfers, of course. But even those with a minimal spirit of adventure may find their curiosity piqued by Stratton's account.  Also available as an ebook. --Blue Ink Reviews

This is an alluring read, taking us on a journey to a far flung South Pacific isle where we discover a mysterious - if not baffling - culture, a host of fascinating characters, and barrels of awe inspiring surfing waves. Bear in mind, this book recounts a time in surfing on Pohnpei when 3 riders was a crowd, long before the term Palikir Pass was even heard by the surfing world at large. I cannot even imagine what it must have been like to crack such a perfect yet relatively unknown wave way out on the reef pass. Then again, the thrill of such an enterprise is lusciously described in this fun and sophisticated travel adventure, Islands on the Fringe. The photos are really eye popping in and of themselves. 5 stars.

Christ-Centered Preaching: Redeeming the Expository Sermon

From the Back Cover

"Christ-Centered Preaching was a pathbreaking book in 1994. While some writers had been urging preachers to treat every text within the redemptive flow of biblical history--always culminating in Jesus Christ--this book was the first one to tell us how to do it. Though one of many classic manuals on expository preaching, it has always been the most detailed, analytic, practical, and comprehensive of them all. This third edition has been updated to address current issues and challenges preachers face and includes many new resources, only making this volume more invaluable."--Tim Keller, pastor emeritus, the Redeemer Presbyterian Churches of New York City"One of my favorite books on preaching just got even better! Not only will Chapell's insights improve your preaching, but you will also find yourself in moments of worship as you consider the unsearchable riches of Christ's grace."--Tony Merida, pastor for preaching and vision, Imago Dei Church, Raleigh, North Carolina; author of The Christ-Centered Expositor"'Good, better, best!' That is how I describe editions one, two, and three of Christ-Centered Preaching. The insights, wisdom, prescriptions, and balance that have for decades made this a foundational preaching textbook have been updated, clarified, reinforced, nuanced, and thoroughly documented. I am eager for my students--and every serious preacher--to read this new edition."--Greg R. Scharf, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"Whether you're just starting out in Bible college or have been in the pulpit for many years, this seminal book must be within arm's reach so that it can help you grow in your preaching ministry."--Julius J. Kim, Westminster Seminary California; author of Preaching the Whole Counsel of God"Even if you've read a previous edition of this critical work, don't fail to get this fresh edition and glean from its present-day application. This book is a necessary resource for all who feel the weight of and embrace the privilege of exalting Jesus through biblical preaching."--Jim Shaddix, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary"A huge, all-important book. . . . Chapell's book is too vast to master, but to miss considering it is like willfully ignoring the Pacific while claiming to be an oceanographer."--Calvin Miller, author of Preaching: The Art of Narrative Exposition

"Christ-Centered Preaching" seeks to restore the preaching of the church to a model Dr. Chapell believes is what is most needed for the church. Dr. Chapell’s thesis is that he seeks to hold forth a model of preaching that proclaims the authority of the Word of God, which exposes the fallen condition of man while at the same the redemption that is found in Christ, emphasizing that all of Scripture points to Christ as the solution to the problems we face. In this way he seeks to correct preaching that is either a form of moralism or a dry recitation of theology. He argues, “The answer lies in learning to see all of God’s Word as a unified message of human need and divine provision (Luke 24:27; Rom. 15:4)” (20). He discusses the process of developing a Christ-Centered Sermon in three parts: Principles of Expository Preaching, dealing with practical matters of preaching as well as the nobility of preaching; Preparing the Expository Sermon, dealing with the necessary steps for faithful exposition; and A Theology of Christ-Centered Messages, highlighting the need to focus on the redemptive purpose of preaching.

Authority and redemption—these two concepts are at the center of Bryan Chapell’s book, Christ-Centered Preaching: Redeeming the Expository Sermon. Chapell says as much in the opening line of the preface to the first edition. While the work is currently in its second edition, Chapell has not deviated from this original goal: to help the church reclaim a Christ-centered, authoritative theology of preaching. In this way, Chapell hopes to re-instill the expository sermon as the primary channel for communicating God’s authority to His people, while also addressing the reasons why this often fails to be the norm for churches in 21st century Evangelicalism. With many years of experience as an expositor and with a PhD in communication theory, Chapell is uniquely qualified to speak to both the practical and theoretical levels of preaching. His work is at once theoretical and practical, providing the reader with philosophical justification and tangible steps and observations for effective implementation. In all of this, Chapell stays rooted in Scripture, especially the revelation of God’s work in Christ. In this way, Chapell has not only written a book on Christ-centered preaching, but has written in a way that is itself Christ-centered.SummaryWithout question, Chapell is “standing on the shoulders of giants” throughout his work. With various quotations from preaching giants like John Calvin, Charles Spurgeon, John Broadus, Haddon Robinson, and others, much of the insights Chapell brings to the table are elaborations of what other great men have previously said. Especially helpful are the insights Chapell brings into this framework from modern communication theory—a relevant discipline that doesn’t always make its way into preaching texts, at least not to the degree Chapell discusses. While there is much that Chapell has to say from many different angles, he has attempted to organize his thoughts into a systematic treatment of preaching that consists in three main sections:1. Principles for Expository Preaching2. Preparation of Expository Sermons3. A Theology of Christ-Centered MessagesThese main sections provide the scope and sequence of the task Chapell is seeking to accomplish, giving the reader more than just a theology of preaching and more than just practical insights for how to prepare a sermon. Instead, Chapell’s treatment is more comprehensive, providing historical, theoretical, and practical insights throughout each section and chapter. Sadly, much of these insights are overly redundant as they overlap with each other, giving the work less retention value for the reader. Nevertheless, the content is rich and insightful for the one willing to work for it.The central theme of the book is the title of the book: Christ-centered preaching. Chapell demonstrates throughout the book that from the preparation to the pulpit, the greatest need of the preacher is to point his people to Christ. Quoting Thomas Jones, Chapell wants us to know that “True Christian preaching must center on the cross of Jesus Christ. The cross is the central doctrine of holy Scripture … The one who is called to preach, therefore, must preach Christ because there is no other message from God” (277).It almost goes without saying that Chapell is drawing upon the principles established (better: recaptured) in the Reformation which emphasized the centrality of Scripture for Christian life and ministry. This is clear from the beginning when Chapell locates the authority for preaching in the Bible itself, rather than in an ecclesiastical system. He notes, “The expository preacher opens the Bible before God’s people and dares to say, ‘I will explain to you what this passage means.” The words are not meant to convey one’s own authority but rather humbly to confess that the preacher has no better word than God’s Word” (30).From beginning to end, Chapell’s goal is to encourage the preacher to use whatever means at his disposal to effectively communicate Christ. In this regard, the Christ-centered preacher realizes that he shares something in common with John the Baptist, “There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify about the light, so that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but he came to testify about the light.” (John 1:6–8, emphasis mine).Chapell’s point throughout the work is that we are not the light. As such, we do not use our preaching to serve ourselves or our agenda. Instead, we come “as a witness to testify about the light.”Critical EvaluationIn true Reformation style, Chapell’s work aims to ground the preacher in the authority of God’s word and encourage him to communicate that authority to his people. Consistent with the book’s title, Chapell doesn’t allow for the preacher to confuse communicate God’s authority with moralism. On the contrary, Chapell shows how the Bible’s authority and the gospel are intricately linked together, proclaiming the authoritative work of Christ on behalf of sinners and calling for a response. How critical this is! In step with the apostle Paul, Chapell exhorts us to hold up the truth of Christ say that people are changed into His image (cf. 2 Cor. 3:18).In many places, Chapell excels in this regard. At the beginning, he provides principles for Christ-centered preaching that speak directly to the overarching rules a preacher should abide by—both as a person and as a preacher. Most memorable in the mind of this writer is the imperative a preacher should place on himself to know the grace of God he claims to preach to others. In Chapell’s words, “You must know grace to preach it” (30). In the same vein that Paul David Tripp has written about in his very important book, Dangerous Calling, Chapell rightfully locates the starting point of Christ-centered preaching: a Christ-centered heart within the preacher himself. From this initial launch point, Chapell provides an overview of how preachers should think about preaching in terms of the importance of identifying a unifying theme and Fallen-Condition Focus or FCF (chapter 2), the priority of the text in the sermon (chapter 3) and the need to emphasize application and not merely provide a running commentary (chapter 4). In these opening chapters, the preacher finds a wealth of valuable insights that provide both the theoretical and practical help needed for effectively preaching Christ and His finished work. However, Chapell’s work is not perfect and in fact, could have been much clearer and more succinct at times. While these opening chapters are filled with insightful comments and quotations from other preachers, they could have been much shorter, given that Chapell repeats much of the same insight throughout the rest of the book. Or, to give another option, it may have been more helpful if Chapell grouped his insights together, rather than stringing them out across multiple chapters. To be specific, part two of the work is labeled: “Preparation of Expository Sermons.” Who would deny the relevance of this topic? On page 124, Chapell speaks about the process of exegesis and how a preacher should “explain exegetical insights in such a way that they make the meaning of a text more obvious, not more remote.” Yes, and Amen, but why did Chapell not mention this earlier when he was speaking about “Principles for Interpreting a Passage” in chapter three of part one? In chapter seven, Chapell speaks about “The Pattern of Illustration,” where he rightfully observes, “the mind yearns for and needs the concrete in order to anchor the abstract” (184). The rest of this chapter is filled with valuable insights like these, but yet again I was left wondering why this section wasn’t somehow joined together with the other sections that speak to the importance of application (i.e. chapter four). As Chapell concludes the book, one wonders why Chapell did not include the content of “Part 3: A Theology of Christ-Centered Sermons” toward the beginning of the book as well instead of the end. By the time we read page 277 and are told, “The Bible is not a self-help book ... It tells us how we must seek Christ, who alone is our Savior and source of strength…”, one would think that this point has—or should have—already been made by now. None of this is to suggest that all the content could have been placed at the beginning, but that the way Chapell has arranged the book leaves him with clear limitations that required him to spread out the content and thus, repeat himself rather too much.To make things more difficult, Chapell’s work is not only unhelpfully grouped, but it is incredibly tedious as well. While there are many valuable insights and helpful sections in the book, the book as a whole feels like a long walk through thick sand on the beach with the occasional sea-shell rising to the surface.None of this is to suggest that brevity is the ultimate goal or standard by which we judge communication, but there is also something to say about being precise and succinct. Unfortunately, the reader spends a lot of time reading what has already been said or quoted before. It seems Chapell could have avoided this by grouping many of his insights together, filtered them more, and communicated them more concisely.

I read this book as a mandatory text book in a Homiletic class in seminary. I highly recommend this book because any preaching without Christ is not Christian. Chapell is an excellent preacher, teacher and author. Anybody can follow his writing because he is very clear and plain. I took this class online in Knox Seminary and I had the opportunity to watch Chapel on the recorded videos. He is so good teaching that it is as if you are reading this book. I highly recommend it for any preacher, teacher or pastor.

If only we could get all preachers to read and implement this book. There would be a lot less boring, Christ less, and confused sermons.Chapell does a great job both equipping you with the mechanics of preaching as well as encouraging the right motivation for preaching. I have already benefited from his tips on introductions, conclusions, and having a single coherent focus for my talks. One of the most helpful elements of sermon prep he suggests is coming up with a fallen condition focus. This helps you to identify what need the people in the passage had as a result of sin and how Christ addresses that need. This keeps the sermon relevant to the audience as you help them to see how their need is similar to those in the text. It also keeps you as the speaker focused on how Jesus meets that need which provides real hope to the audience. His discussion of the importance of relevant, specific applications was also very helpful. I have received great feedback from the students I work with as I have applied his principles.(I work in campus ministry) I used to give vague application principles(trust Christ more) Now I spend time thinking of specific situations the students might struggle with.(trusting him during your conflict with your roommate, trusting him to provide for your school tuition, etc.)The best thing about this book is that Chapell uses the principles he advocates in how he wrote it. For example he says we should use illustrations in sermons. In the book he often uses illustrations. I love authors who practice what they preach.

Review

“Parkin has a deft sense of the ways that video games appeal to and satiate the longings of the spirit...Death by Video Game offers an excellent sociocultural study of the 21st century’s quintessential art form.” —The Washington Post“For the past decade or so, Tom Bissell has been widely regarded as the best video game writer, and his essay collection Extra Lives the best book about video games. That was true until Simon Parkin’s Death by Video Game...Brainy enough to appeal to even the deepest gamer, and yet accessible enough for the reader who hasn’t picked up a controller in years.” —GQ“Parkin has...a literary eye for scenic and investigative detail...Demonstrate[s] the importance of thoughtful, serious criticism on gaming and play.”—New York Times Book Review “This country could use a reexamining of the underlying appeal of video games. Simon Parkin’s book does just that, exploring the different aspects (discovery, evil, competition) that come to captivate player-bases so strongly that individuals will neglect their health to the point of death.” —Flavorwire“Groundbreaking ... his reportage leads to brilliant, fresh insights ... Accomplishing that rare feat of teaching while entertaining, this work ignites a series of debates crucial to the future of video games.” —Library Journal, starred review“The finest book on video games yet. Simon Parkin thinks like a critic, conjures like a novelist, and writes like an artist at the height of his powers—which, in fact, he is.” —Tom Bissell, author of Extra Lives: Why Video Games Matter“Simon Parkin is gaming's Jon Ronson, and his book charts the extremes of the medium to try to answer the question why the hell do we all care about video games anyway?” —Kieron Gillen, writer of Iron Man,Uncanny X-Men, and The Wicked + The Divine “The best book about video games I've read since I wrote one.” —Steven Poole, author of Trigger Happy“Fascinating . . . Parkin takes seriously the notion that video games, or some aspects of them, might be bad for us. Yet he also takes video games seriously as a source of solace for a grieving parent or spouse, a safe form of indoor play for Iraqi children in Baghdad, and a helpful way, like any other form of fiction, for humanity to avoid staring too directly at our certain deaths.” —Chris SuellentropFrom the Hardcover edition.

As expected. No issues.

Delves into what is typically overlooked when it comes to gaming and the potential negative impact it has on those who become too obsessed. A great read for those who are into gaming.

I personally have been an off and on gamer since I was five-years-old. I am now thirty-two-years-old and I have seen and played them all. Sometimes in healthy moderation and sometimes I find myself trapped in “chronoslip,” as Parkin describes it – the loss of time as one battles good, evil, or another person from the other side of the globe. My history mainly revolves around gaming consoles - from the Atari to what I currently own, the Xbox One. And on the PC I spent an unknown and presumably unhealthy amount of time in Starcaft and World of Warcraft. When I inadvertently or purposely decide to submerge myself into video games Simon Parkin’s “Death By Video Game,” truly captured why I had binged for hours, days, and even months at a time - escapism. The idea of escapism bleeds throughout the book along with the good, bad, and ugly of video gaming. This is my first book I have read concerning the gaming culture, but more importantly its history and its merit to the developer and the gamer himself. The book focuses on an array of topics such as the massacre and bloodshed at Columbine and Sandy Hook as the murderers were gamers themselves. It explains why video games are a sort of different medium than television in correlation to freedom of speech. It becomes evident that video games may have limited freedom due to the fear of public backlash like a game where you assume the role of Lee Harvey Oswald and assassinate John F Kennedy again and again...What I really liked about “Death by Video Game,” is that I could relate to his subjects who just wanted to flee from their own lives. As a former World of Warcraft player, I literally could not stop playing until I had realized I was not doing anything worthwhile in my life but searching for loot, the most powerful gear, and the rarest items. And for what - bragging rights and an eerie sense of accomplishment. In the end, no one but other hardcore gamers can relate and that is why this is a must read. Video games have and can ruin relationships and for those who don’t really understand the enthusiast who spends his day in front of the screen should read this. But as Parkin explains there is a certain thrill to it, like teaming with 24 other players online to down the last boss in a raid and reap the digital rewards. It is an experience, and to me it became a lifestyle to do the grind of leveling up, acquiring gold, and fulfilling requirements to proceed to the end game until the next expansion was released. As an introduction Parkin goes to shed light on the deaths of Asian gamers who, well played in excess to their own demise. From there he shifts from political to the positive and negatives of gaming and its young history. It is a very satisfying read and for me, it led me to come to terms that gaming is essentially a killer of time. A genuine waste of time. But so is television and theater.

This is a fantastic insight into the mindsets of gamers and how video games have become such an important part of so many lives, mine included. If you're a gamer who wants to understand yourself better, then read this book. If you're not a gamer but know some who rather bamboozle you, read this book. :-)

A lot of it felt very forced. Certain chapters back up the premise but much of it felt like it was lightly shoehorned in to give it more pages. The theme of "video games let you be in control why other media is passive" is overused in every chapter and became fairly annoying rather than informative. Did not do a great job of exploring the premise of examining those who have actually died due to obsession with virtual worlds. Wouldn't recommend to fellow games industry folks.

This is a really, really good book. It is full of well-written and thoughtful ideas about video games in general and specific video games. There were many games mentioned in this book that I had never heard of, or that I never knew the background details about. I encourage any self-respecting video game player to read this book. Excellent, and I would love to read a sequel.

I love Lisa's work, if you haven't seen her Vblog on you tube, if you can't afford therapy, I highly recommend it! It has changed my life! It is still changing my life! Lisa has a very empathetic and personable way of communicating to her audience, but her greatest gift is showing you exactly how to overcome the obstacles of your programming. She not only explains to you how your mind works against you, but gives you tools that address all the symptoms of co-dependency. Best of all she has done her own recovery work. She knows what she is talking about, not as distant observer but as a survivor of her own childhood programming. She has given me a lot of hope in very dark times, and I can't wait to see how much more I will learn from her. It will take time and dedication to sit down and do some of the exercises she suggests. But they are well worth it, if you believe you are well worth it. It's all about getting to know yourself, coming to terms with your past and having a vision for your future. Thank you Lisa!

This book has honestly opened up a whole new world of understanding for me. In Codependent - Now What?... Lisa breaks down the pain and the issues in a way that that is emathetic and understandable. I was originally diagnosed clinically depressed and codependent more than 30 years ago. No counselor, medication, yogi or spiritual teacher has cut to the chase and opened my heart and mind the way Lisa and this book has. I highly recommend this practical guide. You will begin to see rapid healing in your life!

Lisa is a true master. This book is liberating, inspiring, and aspirational. If you are a codependent or wondering what it is, read this book. Prepare to undo the lies that you have taken for granted as truth. Lisa's writing ability and expertise have increased extraordinarily since her first book (I have read all of them), and it only further captivates the reader. Whether you are on her YouTube page, watching a live video, or reading a book, you sense a deep connection to her. And not only that, but Lisa doesn't fancy herself a "guru" - she exhibits truly humility that we are all equal and have equal ability to heal, connect, and share love and light with the world. Thank you, thank you, thank, you Lisa. My only hope is that her coaching sessions will be discounted for students.

This book is the equivalent of going into my head and unscrewing and taking all the things I have desperately tried to get my fiance (who comes from a relatively healthy family) to understand - and then putting them both on the table and saying how to get over them. Even the language I have used in trying to combat dysfunctional behavior is in this book - Like desperately wanting to be "seen." And not living in the present, because of this one. I have read a lot of books, I have gone to alot of, and have tried alot of therapist, by far this is one of best resources I have come across. The commandments are worth the price alone.

Looking forward to healing. I am 53 years old and only recently discovered that my abusive EX and mother are pathological narcissists. I am definitely a codependent as a result of life long narcissistic abuse and now it’s is time to embrace healing. In 2012 my only sibling and loving brother ended his life by suicide. I tried to make sense of his death and now believe my mother destroyed my brother’s life, self esteem and every loving relationship he ever had. I too have been that low but never again. The rest of my life will be the best of my life. I watch your YouTube videos and might try your August workshop. Thank you Lisa for helping me make sense of my confusing life. Knowledge is empowering.

I am currently in Lisa's 12 week program and this is an excellent work book to use with the course. Even if I weren't in the course, this book would be an excellent resource and life saver for anyone who is currently codependent. The tools and information are invaluable! One of my best purchases in my life.

This brilliant book is for anyone and everyone who has ever asked themselves why is my life not exactly how I imagined it even though I am a good person and hard worker. And for those who haven't asked that question, this book is the best in helping move away the cobwebs of the mind that prevent us from having true clarity and ownership of our true, authentic selves. Not whoooeeeooo spooky spiritual, Lisa A Romano has compiled 20 plus years of her own experience and has outlined a program that allows us to fearlessly face ourselves in order to become the best we can be. This book is for everyone. It's the best investment I've made in myself in a long, long time. I highly recommend this book.

I have read all of Lisa A Romano's books to date. I love her style of writing because it is as if she is talking directly to me as I read the words off the page. I highly recommend her work, her YouTube Channel is amazing! Her teachings are phenomenal and she has helped me to see that I too am more than enough! If you ever feel unseen, unheard, and dismissed in life than her work is for you!As children growing up in the 60s and 70s the motto was that children are to be seen and not heard and unfortunately many of us came from homes like that and we didn't receive the sincere validation that has human beings is so vitally important for our development as kids.Lisa walks you through her journey, through the muck and the mire and then she takes you on a journey of recovery. It is not an easy one but it is certainly a powerful one!Thank you, Lisa, for all that you do!In love and light!Kelly

A Complete Handbook of Literary Forms in the Bible, by Leland Ryken

Review

“Coming from a world-renowned expert in the literary forms of the Bible and drawing on the expertise that can come only from a lifetime of college teaching, this marvelous new book will take its place as an essential reference work that should be in the library of everyone who seeks to study or teach the Bible in greater depth. Highly recommended.”―Wayne Grudem, Distinguished Research Professor of Theology and Biblical Studies, Phoenix Seminary“Here is a book, indeed, to keep at hand: it will hold a permanent place by my Bible. Leland Ryken illustrates the interrelationship between meaning and form in a manner that is erudite, accessible, and illuminating. Learning about literary forms in the Bible deepens our understanding and appreciation of Scripture, and glorifies our God as Author of all.”―Carolyn Weber, Faculty Member, Brescia University College, Western University, London, Ontario; author, Surprised by Oxford and Holy Is the Day“This extremely useful book will be warmly welcomed by teachers, not only within churches, but also in college and university settings. A highly practical vade mecum for any serious reader of the Bible, for students of the Bible in its literary dimension it will become practically indispensable. Leland Ryken has made yet another superb contribution to our textual resources for biblical learning.”―David Lyle Jeffrey, Distinguished Professor of Literature and the Humanities, Baylor University“Here is a reader-friendly handbook that will significantly enhance one’s understanding of the Bible. What a wonderful tool for pastors, laypeople, and students alike, who will now be able to benefit from Leland Ryken’s wise insights and marvelous literary skills. I heartily recommend this volume.”―David S. Dockery, President, Trinity International University / Trinity Evangelical Divinity School“A ready reference for scholars and general readers who wish to understand the Bible better and in its own terms, Ryken’s handbook needs to be on every serious Bible reader’s shelf and used often. A profoundly helpful resource.”―Michael Travers, Associate Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Oklahoma Baptist University“In this essential handbook, Ryken guides us to a proper understanding of the many literary forms of Scripture. Pastors and all readers of the Bible will deepen their understanding of God’s Word if they read this book cover to cover and keep it nearby for future reference.”―Tremper Longman III, Distinguished Scholar of Biblical Studies, Westmont College“Our kind Father has gone to great lengths to speak to us, yet sometimes our finite minds struggle to comprehend the complexities of his Word. This book will greatly enhance your ability to understand confusing passages, as well as see deeper richness in the old, familiar stories. Ryken helps you become more skillful at interpreting the Bible and knowing how to apply it accurately. The result will be a great increase in your love and admiration for our heavenly Father, who shares his heart with us in profound poetry, striking stories, colorful dialogue, and vivid imagery. Those who love Scripture, or want to love Scripture more, should read this book!”―Barbara Duguid, author, Extravagant Grace“This is a genuinely helpful resource for all readers of the Bible, but it is an especially excellent reference for teachers and students of the Bible as literature. Ryken’s volume will help readers experience, enjoy, and understand the Bible in new ways. The breadth of entries is thorough and truly impressive. Individual entries are concise but include enough explanation and examples to successfully illustrate each literary form discussed. This book is written by an expert in literature and the Bible, and it shows.”―David V. Urban, Associate Professor of English, Calvin College“This uniquely useful and accessible handbook will be a favorite among the tools used by serious students of the Bible. In recent decades, attention to the literary structures of the Bible’s various genres has become prominent. With all of the distractions of the modern world, study tools like this will help Christians to be imbued with the mind of Christ through his Word. I highly recommend this superb contribution to biblical studies.”―Gregory Reynolds, Pastor, Amoskeag Presbyterian Church, Manchester, New Hampshire; author, The Word Is Worth a Thousand Pictures: Preaching in the Electronic Age; editor, Ordained Servant: A Journal for Church Officers“Leland Ryken’s handbook is a well-conceived, concisely written, hugely helpful resource for students and teachers alike. Far from turning the Bible into ‘mere’ literature, Ryken draws us deeper into the authoritative and inerrant truths of the Scriptures. Just as we cannot know Christ apart from his incarnation as Jesus of Nazareth, so we cannot fully know the Bible until we understand the literary forms in which it was written.”―Louis Markos, Professor of English and Scholar in Residence, Houston Baptist University; author, From Achilles to Christ and Literature: A Student’s Guide

Excellent resource and also a helpful/insightful way to think about familiar storylines in the bible as they relate to classic storylines.

Extremely complete listing and explanation of biblical literary forms.

Great book! Quite necessary for scholarly investigation.

As a young missionary and student of the Bible, I once received counsel to check out certain commentaries written by scholars who didn't believe the Bible to be true. This counselor wasn't trying to lead me away from the true faith but toward it, because he suggested, "Many liberal scholars are more willing than conservatives to take the Bible at face value. Since they don't care what the Bible says, they have nothing to lose by being honest about its message." Having grown tired of endless word studies and thin defenses of dogmatic opinions on every page of some conservative commentaries, I gave it a try.And I began learning to read the Bible as a work of literature.(Please note: Not all commenters are created equal. Some unbelieving scholars take offense at the Bible's message and seek to undermine it at every turn. I'm not writing about them, but about their colleagues who approach the Bible with more indifference than aggression.)This approach helped me for a time, leading me to learn from brilliant (though spiritually foolish) writers how beautiful and well-written the Scriptures are. I learned how important structure was to ancient authors. I gained a keener eye for devices like characterization, comparison and contrast, inclusio (bookends), and repetition. I realized how important the original audience is to our interpretation. I learned to set aside my preconceptions, since I often had to suspend my disgust for the commentator's assumptions in order to sharpen my ability to observe the text and delight in the ancient artistry.Enter Leland Ryken.Dr. Ryken showed me that I didn't have to simmer in unbelieving scholarship in order to read the Bible for what it is: literature. One of my earliest "wow" experiences was being required to read selections from Ryken's Words of Delight: A Literary Introduction to the Bible for a seminary course. The book was so good, I finished it on my own as soon as the course ended. And I've returned to it regularly ever since.Ryken teaches college-level English and trusts God's word. I praise God for his service to the kingdom of God in our generation, through his teaching career and long list of published works. And I was delighted when this man I deeply respect was willing to endorse my book Knowable Word.Crossway caught my eye when they offered me a copy of Ryken's recent work, A Complete Handbook of Literary Forms in the Bible, in exchange for an honest review. This handbook appeared to be a useful tool for any student's library. And Ryken's Handbook delivers on a grand scale. Ryken gets literature, and he gets the Bible. The Handbook lists about 270 different forms Bible passages follow and gives definitions, explanations, and examples for each form. The handbook's introduction explains why literary form matters: Writers communicate meaning through form. If we ignore form, we often miss the meaning. There is no content in the Bible communicated without a form. And a biblical understanding of inspiration requires us to recognize the inspiration of not only words and content but also the shape those words take.Ryken explains:"The most obvious lesson that this handbook reveals is that the Bible is much more infused with literary forms and techniques than we realize. In fact, I predict that anyone who browses in this book for ten minutes will be shocked by the extent to which literary forms and techniques are present in the Bible." (Kindle loc. 381)Dr. Ryken is a prophet indeed. The Handbook will help you understand forms like soliloquy, three-plus-one motifs, parody, insult, irony, hero stories, fantasy, foreshadowing, envelope structure, apostrophe, coming-of-age stories, stories of villainy, and lament psalms, to name but a small percentage of forms.I would imagine using this reference often, except for one significant flaw that undermines its usefulness to average Bible readers like me. It has no Scripture index. This handbook is useful only to those already familiar with the extensive literary terms. If I'm reading Job 3, and I want to learn more about how soliloquies work, this handbook offers a marvelous explanation. But if I've never heard the term soliloquy, the handbook will be of no use to me.I would give this book 5 stars if it had a Scripture index tying Bible references to the names of literary forms found in them. Without such an index, unfortunately, I can't see most readers benefitting from this handbook—unless they're either steeped in the terminology of literature or reading other reference works making use of that terminology.

In the introduction to this marvelous little book, Leland Ryken makes a distinction that helps explain why his book is necessary. Some people, he notes, argue that "the literary forms of the Bible are only the forms in which the content comes to us." By contrast, he argues that the Bible's literary forms are "the only form in which the content is expressed." He concludes: "Without form, no content exists. Form is meaning. Meaning is embodied in form."If Ryken is correct--and I think he is--then we must pay attention to genres, literary techniques, motifs, archetypes and type scenes, figures of speech, rhetorical devices, stylistic traits, and formulas, for these literary forms are the vehicles by means of which biblical authors, inspired by God, expressed theological, historical, and moral content. Failure to understand the literary form correctly may result in a failure to understand the Bible correctly. We should not interpret a parable as a historical narrative, to cite an obvious example. If we do, we misunderstand both. The handbook presents literary forms in alphabetical order, beginning with "ABUNDANCE, STORY OF" and ending with "WORSHIP PSALM." For each form, Ryken provides both definition and example. Most of his entries are noncontroversial, though I think "PARABLE" might ruffle a few pastoral feathers, since it argues that parables are "usually allegorical," in the sense that "numerous details in most of [Jesus'] parables stand for something else." My guess is that readers will agree the substance of Ryken's remarks, even if they chafe at his use of the words allegory and allegorical.Ryken's entries, "COMEDY" and "TRAGEDY," point to architectonic truths about the literary form of the Bible considered as a whole. "It is a commonplace of literary criticism," Ryken writes in the former entry, "that comedy rather than tragedy is the dominant form of the Bible and the Christian gospel." Why? "The story begins with the creation of a perfect world. It descends into the tragedy of fallen human history. It ends with a new world of total happiness and victory over evil." By contrast, as Ryken writes in the latter entry, "The materials for tragedy are everywhere present in the Bible, but the Bible is largely a collection of averted tragedies--potential tragedies that are avoided through human repentance and divine forgiveness." The biblical metanarrative of creation, fall, and redemption encodes a comic worldview, a hopeful story with a happy ending. No wonder joy is the predominant response to the gospel whenever it is preached! Those wishing to study the literary forms of the Bible in greater depth can turn to several other works by the same author, including: How to Read the Bible as Literature,Words of Delight: A Literary Introduction to the Bible,Ryken's Bible Handbook, and Dictionary of Biblical Imagery, which he co-edited with James C. Wilhoit and Tremper Longman III.Finally, on a personal note, I was a student of Ryken's in his classes on British Literature and Milton at Wheaton College (Class of '91). I enjoyed those classes thoroughly, despite the bullwhip. (Don't ask!) And I continue to profit from his many writings on the literary qualities of the Bible.
