It's an important story about the history and future of theater in America. Joe Papp made plays more exciting by taking them out of the theater and making them free. This book uses the exact words of all of the participants in an oral history format and the inconsistencies between accounts were interesting. On the other hand, the book is too long and makes the same points over and over. And the story bogs down at the end of Papp's career when he was providing new playwrights with a venue and a bridge to Broadway. That was a lot less interesting to me than the beginning when he was producing Romeo and Juliet on the fly in the parks in bad neighborhoods. Still, I highly recommend it.

The Greatest (Theater) Story Ever ToldJoe [Papp] has been the entrepreneur par excellence, the voodoo man, the magic man, the medicine man who went and found all the people, who played the drum and brought all the folks in from the wilderness and gave them a fire to gather around.....LINDA HUNT (actress, Aunt Dan and Lemon). If a man can love a man as a brother, I love Joe. But he has complications on top of complications in him; he has the same dark sides we all have....[and] he's experimenting all the time. Just when you think he's going in one direction, he's ready to change horses. And that can hurt people....CHARLES DURNING (actor, That Championship Season)."Free for ALL, Joe Papp, the Public, and the Greatest Theater Story Ever Told," by Kenneth Turan & Joseph Papp, is my favorite of the hundred or so theater books - I'm a Broadway producer, and blog at [...] - I've read over the past twenty years. This book is the best primer I've seen on how theater truly is created, and how it truly works, both backstage and in the producer's office. The theatrical process doesn't always work smoothly or happily, as many of us know, but somehow Papp held his productions together, and the stories of how he did that are wonderful indeed. In fact, my biggest problem in writing this blog was that every time I'd pick up the book again to find a quote or check a fact, I'd start rereading the stories I'd read a couple of days before."Free For All" has a curious history: 23 years ago, Turan and Papp contracted to make an oral biography from interviews with Papp and nearly 200 of the people who had been important in his theatrical life. But when Papp read the first draft, he refused to allow the book to be published. By then his son had been diagnosed with AIDS, and he, himself, with prostate cancer. Turan felt Papp was also upset over some of the comments about him that had come out of the interviews. Turan was stuck with a long manuscript in a box, until years later he was finally able to strike a deal with Papp's widow.I'm not sure I've ever read a book that was entirely composed of quotes, but the format really works, giving immediacy to each event. Often the reader has a Rashomon experience, as two or more people recount the same meeting or moment in entirely different ways. And the deeply personal feelings expressed by those interviewed make for wonderful insights into them, and into Joe Papp.My ancestral roots are in Eastern Europe, and I'm very conscious of that, conscious that I'm in the tradition of the Holocaust....I came from a certain kind of poverty level, which was really below that of most of New York's Jews. I always felt that distinction. I've always felt slightly removed from, for instance, the world of Broadway and the Shuberts. I can talk to them, I'll walk with them, but, as Shylock would say, I won't eat with them....JOSEPH PAPPBriefly stated: Joseph Papp was born in 1921 in Brooklyn, had no money, started producing plays in the Navy, then in basements, toured minimal Shakespearian productions throughout the five boroughs of Manhattan, established Shakespeare in the Park, established the Public Theater, took over and failed at running Lincoln Center Theater, and died in 1991, at the age of 70.At one point, he was producing for a total of ten New York stages.Papp sent many productions to Broadway, including Hair, That Championship Season, A Chorus Line, and The Pirates of Penzance. He gave first big breaks to many actors - Colleen Dewhurst, George C. Scott, James Earl Jones, and Meryl Streep included; and to many playwrights - David Rabe, Jason Miller, and Wallace Shawn included; and though Papp didn't give William Shakespeare his first big break, he sure did give him one hell of a boost.Joseph Papp produced some huge hits that were fun to watch, and many more plays that were difficult to watch. He wanted his audiences to see and experience parts of American life they might otherwise avoid: the heartlessness of the Vietnam War (Pavlo Hummel; Sticks and Bones); child molesters in prison (Short Eyes); mastectomies (Mert & Phil); street kids (Runaways); the outbreak of AIDS (The Normal Heart); and the basic hypocrisy and blindness of society (Aunt Dan and Lemon).I told the cast, "Once in every ten years or so, a play comes along that fulfills my original idea of what role theater must play in society,"....JOSEPH PAPP [on The Normal Heart].I was enjoying myself watching "Aunt Dan and Lemon" and at some point somebody got up and stalked out, hitting his heels, and afterwards I asked Joe "God, what was that about?" And he said, "I always like it better if it gets them mad....LINDA RONSTADT (singer/actress, The Pirates of Penzance). He was passionate, infuriating, shrewd, relentless, soft-hearted (at times), ruthless (at times), mercurial, unstoppable, idealistic, pragmatic, often impossible, brilliant."Free For All" contains too many great stories from which to choose, so I'll close with only two, perhaps my favorites:In 1956, a totally broke Papp was producing THE TAMING OF THE SHREW, for no money, at the East River Park Amphitheater. His Company was so broke that if he didn't get the Chief Drama Critic for the Times, Brooks Atkinson, to come to this unlikely theater and review the show, he`d have to close down his operation. So he went to the Times' offices, plopped himself down in the lobby, and waited hours for Atkinson to turn up. Determination. Perseverance. Finally, Atkinson arrived, and Papp insisted on their having a meeting. Cojones.Somehow he convinced Atkinson - Persuasiveness - to come to the show that night, but Atkinson insisted Papp had to drive him there. So Papp picked up the immaculately-dressed critic at the Harvard Club in the only vehicle he had, an old, dirty two-ton truck, and took his chosen reviewer to his Off-Off-Off-Broadway play in its flea-bitten Lower East Side theater.Atkinson gave the show a rave, and Joe Papp could go on producing. And, three years later, the immensely powerful Robert Moses, who counted Parks Commissioner among his four City positions, decided the audiences for Papp's Shakespeare in the Park should have to pay admissions, some of which would go to the City. This was against everything Papp stood for, so he took the immensely powerful Robert Moses to court, and - against all odds - won the battle. There was a moment when I picked up the New York Times and saw that Joe had literally beat the government. He had no name, no political push, nothing. I know a lot of people who have power, but he's probably the only person I know who has real power, because he had it before he had the trimmings....COLLEEN DEWHURST (actress, The Taming of the Shrew). If you've read this far, you must love the theater, and if you love the theater, you must read "Free For All".I guarantee you won't regret it.

Fascinating book about a giant of the American theater. I highly recommend it.

Having worked with and for Joe Papp for 10 years betweem 1980 and 1990 I enjoyed reading about his life, love of Shakspeare and his dedication to good Theater. For me he was a mentor, hiring me to vocal coach his musicals. He was tough and always fair. Honest to the core and standing always for truth in the Theater. There are many of us who miss him personally and the work he provided for so many talented artists. Marge Rivingston

A must read

What an amazing man! What an amazing book! Everything I hoped it would be and more.

good clean copy

I paid this book the ultimate compliment: as I could see I was approaching the end, I slowed down, not wanting to finish...and also not being able to put it down!Ken Turan has recreated a life -- not easy to do, as any great biographer (or novelist) could tell us. Joe Papp's life was large and largely-lived, a life of great passion and great love, and great energy, and joy -- and filled with a lot of hard work. The book captures it all. The Public and the Shakespeare Festival nurtured many a young and talented playwright, gave young actors some of their first moments of glory, and gave all New York a taste for everything from Julius Caesar to a Chorus Line. The alumni list reads like a who's who of theater - and movies, too, for that matter: playwrights David Rabe and Sam Shepard, actors like George C Scott, Coleen Dewhurst, Kevin Kline, Meryl Streep, and directors like Michael Bennett speak through this book. The stories they tell, and that Joe Papp himself tells, are laced with sometimes-painful truths, and all of them glow with the love of the theater and all it means.Don't like theater? Read it anyway...you'll find yourself eager to hear the next story and marveling at the power of the will and the drive to create which Joe Papp embodied. Joe Papp, my hat's off to you! and to Ken Turan!

This book is not what it was billed to be because it does NOT "shows you how to build and safely operate...mechatronic equipment." Instead, this book is best used to impart a broad overview familiarization of CNC terminology and systems to a new manager or a sales rep who has very little knowledge of CNC and needs to be able to communicate coherently with the actual CNC operators. For example, the chapter on "Programming of CNC Machines" is only 15 pages long!! I am not a machinist nor have I ever worked in that field.

Great if you want to build or adapt a CNC machine. Does have some basic terminology that is helpful to beginner USERS of a CNC machine. I was really looking for a CNC manual that explains a bit better than the non-existent user manuals that come (or don't) with CNC routers. It was helpful but most of the content directed at builders, not users. I will keep looking...or write one!

Thank you

All the basics plus a lot more.

This book is one of my favorite because I find all about CNC control like basic concepts, definitions, examples and so on.Peter Smidt ia a good author so all his book are writing with excellent words.I like to recommendate to buy this book, is an ecellent subject for CNC machines and its control.March 9, 2014Jaime Z.

The Bread and Salt Between Us: Recipes and Stories from a Syrian Refugee’s Kitchen

Review

A quietly powerful reflection on how food can bring families together, Mayada's book honors the everyday rhythms of the immigrant experience. Fatayer, mulukhiyah, tabbouleh―these recipes show why Syrian cuisine should have a place at everyone's table. (Marcus Samuelsson, co-owner of Red Rooster Harlem)Mayada Anjari's book is a beautiful testimony to the rich―and often overlooked―cultural contributions that displaced people bring to their country of adoption. More than just a collection of recipes, this book is a cultural artifact that celebrates the power of food to transcend the hardships of refugee life. (Pierre Thiam, chef and author of Senegal)This is a book to cook from and to learn from, a beautiful invitation to engage with Syrian home cooking. In warm and graceful writing, Jennifer Sit sets forth Mayada Anjari's very accessible recipes, cooking wisdom, and story of her family's journey from Syria to America. Bravo! (Naomi Duguid, author of Taste of Persia: A Cook’s Travels Through Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran, and Kurdistan)Mayada's story is one of an immigrant overcoming adversity through perseverance and her desire to build and connect with her community through her food. This is a cookbook that celebrates Syrian food and the kindness of the human heart. (Nik Sharma, founder of the blog A Brown Table and author of Season: Big Flavors, Beautiful Food)I always hoped to make it to Syria, to see Palmyra and the famous souk in Aleppo, and best of all, to taste the food. Thanks to Mayada, I get to cook the legendarily delicious food myself, right at home. This book holds a beautiful and evocative story, and by buying a copy you're supporting Mayada's family and an organization committed to helping many more. (Sara Jenkins, chef and owner of Nina June and Porsena)How exciting it is to step into Mayada's fragrant, enchanting kitchen in this special book, where we get an up-close and personal lesson in making her luscious Syrian recipes. Mayada is the kind of cook who inspires trust. She reflects the hospitable, generous soul of the Middle East, showing us that everything we make tastes better when shared with those we welcome to our tables. The inspiring journey of her family in this book is a story of strength, love, and hope―it is stirred beautifully into every recipe, and we are grateful for every taste. (Maureen Abood, blogger and author of Rose Water & Orange Blossoms: Fresh and Classic Recipes from My Lebanese Kitchen)This beautiful book testifies to the power of food to heal and connect. By cooking for others, Mayada keeps her family traditions intact; by sharing her recipes and stories, she communicates the centrality of food in Syrian culture. The Bread and Salt Between Us is both a delicious introduction to Syrian food and a moving portrait of resilience. It belongs in every library and kitchen. (Darra Goldstein, founding editor of Gastronomica)As a wife, mother, and chef, I connected deeply to this beautiful book and the stories and recipes that came from a place of struggle and love. The Bread and Salt Between Us does a wonderful job paying tribute to Mayada's heritage with recipes that we all want to eat! Mayada's food is the kind that brings people together and has the power to heal. (Einat Admony, chef and owner of Balaboosta, taïm, Bar Bolonat, and Kish-Kash)The Bread and Salt Between Us is a powerful story of survival and reincarnation. Most importantly, the collective stories bind us all together through food and memories. (Vikas Khanna, chef, restaurateur, and cookbook author)In our current political and cultural climate, it's commendable to see someone using her passion for food to step beyond boundaries. Food has always been a conduit for a deeper understanding of other cultures, and Mayada shows a picture of love and warmth through her delicious recipes. (Jose Garces, chef and author of The Latin Road Home)

In 2017 I became involved in the local Syrian refugee community in my town. I have heard devastating stories and those of hope. I have laughed, I have cried, I have danced, I have sat in stunned silence, all while visiting the homes of my Syrian friends. In every Syrian home I have had the honor of visiting has been marked by delicious food that is lovingly prepared. Just this morning a Syrian friend insisted on making my daughter a traditional Syrian cake for her birthday. Thanks to my friends sharing their food and their kitchens with me I have become a regular at the local Arabic market and have learned to make a few Syrian dishes myself. This book is filled with recipes I have eaten in the homes of my friends and others I can't wait to discover. The beauty of the Syrian people, and their heart for loving & gracious hospitality, is revealed in this book. I HIGHLY recommend this to everyone, whether a cook or just someone who enjoys learning about other cultures.

I just finished making this wonderful Chicken and potatoes recipe for a group of friends. Everyone thought it was delicious and the instructions were clear and easy to follow. I'm giving this cookbook to all my friends for Christmas! I can't think of a better way to welcome the Anjari family into our country than by eating this Syrian food and reading about the Syrian culture and family life.

I have enjoyed this cookbook and will use the recipes frequently. It is well written and the pictures are both helpful and inspiring. I enjoy trying foods from cultures different from my own and this cookbook delivers. The stories included regarding the cook author's refugee family were interesting and heartwarming. That said, what did disappoint me greatly was the Acknowledgements section where one of the co-writers took it upon herself to disparage the President and make what was a wonderful cookbook a personal political statement. What a shame. I will note, the cook author's family came here legally and went immediately to work building their new life here. Wonderful. I'll probably just cut out the page from the co-author.

I bought this book after reading about the author and other refugee stories about their first Thanksgivings here in the US, I wanted a way to support their efforts so when I saw the link for the cookbook I ordered it. It’s mostly recipes of everyday fare for everyday meals. Other than the pomegranate molasses I have pretty much everything already in my spice rack. I tired the coriander chicken and it was very tasty, next time I will cook it on the grill outside.( it’s real winter here in Michigan) Of course there are little stories about the recipes and family which is part of what this book is about. Another part of what is important is the refuge story, about cooking food in a strange country, that will taste like “ home”.

Love this Syrian home cooking cookbook. Mayada's dishes are simple and delicious and she uses those wonderful middle eastern spices like cardamom, cumin, tahini, etc. She has vegetarian recipes as well as those that use chicken, beef or lamb. Beautifully photographed and included are her personal stories as a refugee who had endured many hardships with her family.

This cookbook of Syrian recipes is as much about a story of a family caught in one of the tragedies of our time, the beauty of human connections (across cultures, religions, languages, lands) as is about the joy of preparing delicious food for family and friends. As a vegetarian I was able to find recipes that are easy to make for a well balanced meal. The cabbage salad with pomegranate molasses was as delicious as it was colorful. The lentil soup was easy to make and flavorful and took less than 30 minutes with the help of the Cook Zen (a microwave pot introduced by the same publisher) to boil the lentil in no time.

Recipes from a refugee. Stories in the book are interesting and tells how one family escaped the the US. Recipes are simple and traditional. I've made a few and they are quite good. I believe the family came from Syria originally.

I am a collector of cookbooks. I have some Syrian ones but this one has a special story of generosity and friendship. It is touching.

When Pointe ended, and Ms. Colbert's voice stopped, I was suddenly aware of how intensely I was breathing. Pointe is a powerful, evocative story of love, and trust, and betrayal. I had originally gotten it because of the ballet theme but it is so much more than that.Ms. Colbert's writing perfectly captured the search for someone who only looks that way at you, who thinks that only you're special, and who thinks that the sun and the moon rise in your eyes alone; the wonder when a lover gently takes and caresses your ugliest feature instead of being repulsed (for a ballet dancer, our beaten up feet that are at the heart of and our sacrifice to our art); the difficulty of being one of only a handful of people who are different in a town that is not like you; the fear that you will not be good enough to be able to do what you're most passionate about; and the fear that your family and friends will hate you for something that was done to you, It is a story of Theo, a 17-year-old ballet dancer who struggles with an eating disorder, with betrayal, with growing up and finding her place in the world.Pointe is an intense book. It can be triggering for people who have eating disorders, have been sexually abused, have PTSD, or have depression. Some will say it is too grown up for teenagers. The issues Theo faces are the same issues that I see teenagers in our high school face every day.Ms. Colbert explores these issues in a sensitive way that never seemed exploitative or sensationalized.Ms. Colbert is an outstanding writer and I look forward to reading anything that she writes. That's not a comment I make lightly and only for a very small handful of authors.Brava!

There are so many details, small little subtle turns of phrase, that make this such a well written story.I'm a WOC in my 30s, and there were so many memories the author mentioned that reminded me of growing up. The uncomfortable Civil War discussions at school, wearing a wrap to bed, how some guys at kind of objectify you because to them you're "exotic" because there's zero diversity in your school. The subtle descriptions made the story jump off of the page, and formed vivid characters, settings, and emotions. This story exceeded my expectations, and I don't want to say too much that might give away anything. But if you like mysteries, psychological thrillers, or coming of age stories- this is the one for you. Hands down, it's the best story I've read this year. It'll be yours too.

Grade: A-POINTE was not the book I expected, after perusing the blurb. It was so much less and so much more.Seventeen-year-old Theo dreams of a future career as a prima ballerina, a rarity for black girls. The last to talk to her best friend Donovan before he disappeared four years ago, she's all but given up hope of seeing him alive. But now he's back and not talking. To anyone. And she knows his alleged kidnapper, more well than anyone could imagine. She knew him as Trent, her eighteen year old secret boyfriend. Now Theo knows his real name I'd Chris and he's really thirty-years-old. And Donovan was found with him two-thousand miles away. But Donovan wasn't kept tied up in a basement. He could have gotten away. Maybe he ran away to be with Trent/Chris. Maybe Chris was cheating on her with Donovan. Now Theo is being asked to testify against her ex-boyfriend, for kidnapping her best friend and she's not sure what to do. If only she could talk to Donovan. But he's holed up in his house. Not talking to anyone.Theo has a lot of problems and more layers than most people, let alone novel characters. Brandy Colbert gives her main character so much depth, I felt like Theo was real. An ambitious dancer, competitive, but not brutally do, imperfectly recovering from anorexia, the only black girl in her dance troupe and school, convinced she's still in love with her ex "boyfriend", sometimes dishonest daughter of two loving parents, cheating secretly with a drug dealer who already has a girlfriend--Theo is dealing with more than most. Sometimes I wanted to grab her and tell her she deserved better, most times I wanted to hug her tight and tell her Trent/Chris wasn't her boyfriend, he was her rapist. I liked her, rooted for her, and understood her enough to wonder, under other circumstances if I could have been her.I expected, and kept waiting for, Theo and Donovan to reconnect and heal each other. I thought that would be the essence of the story, but POINTE was much more Theo's story than Donovan's. Her journey was much more painful than the joy of reconnection and weathering the aftermath as only best-friendscan do.The only negative of this brilliant, subtle, thought provoking novel is that there were too many minor high school friends/acquaintances for me to keep track of. I hope Colbert continues to write wonderful, deep novels and that she writes quickly, because I can't wait to see what she does next.Themes: kidnapping, friendship, dancing, anorexia recovery, dating, statutory rape, drugs, ballet, relationships, court, family, cheating

What I loved about this book is the gritty honesty of the setting. It reminded me of my teen years dealing with drugs and deadbeat boys and alcohol, whereas most YA feels so sanitized it is removed from my own experience. I also like how the author makes you see how Theo really fell for these boys, even as she slowly comes to understand they treat her badly. Her flashbacks of time with Trent/Chris felt excruciatingly real. However, there were drawbacks too--too much time spent angsting over whether to tell or not with no movement forward. And the ballet, while the detail work was great, always felt a little peripheral. Overall, it was a good read and well written, but not as addictive of a story as I was looking for.

A Star Is Born (Turner Classic Movies): Judy Garland and the Film that Got Away, by Lorna Luft Jeffrey Vance

Review

"A Star is Born: Judy Garland and the Film that Got Away is delightfully full of back story for the first four versions. Ms. Luft and Mr. Vance began their collaboration in 2010 and clearly did all it took to get the final product, a gem for Judy Garland fans, as well as for film buffs and Hollywood aficionados. This semi-biographical book is everything you'll ever want to know about Garland's 1954 version but never thought to ask.―New York Journal of Books

No one will ever surpass the fascination and adoration that Judy Garland commands. She was the greatest entertainer of the 20th century and will be read about, talked about, listened to and watched long after all of us have turned to dust. This interesting look at A Star Is Born by her Daughter Lorna is a beautiful tribute to not only an entertainer but a loving caring Mother. She adores her Mother as we all do and preserves her work beautifully. This is a must read from the "source" close to Judy Garland, not a writer who researched, but a Daughter who lived and loved her Mother Judy Garland. Beautifully presented, this book is a five star keeper! Good going Lorna, we love your Mama too!!!!

I did not learn anything from this book that I didn't know before. Lorna was a baby when the movie was made, therefore everything she knows comes from other people whose accounts have already been aired over the years. There's nothing new in what her mother told her later on. The angst that Garland and Sid Luft felt when their masterpiece was severely cut is well known. The production delays due to Garland's drug dependency, her brilliance in performance despite health and mood set-backs are also oft-told stories. Better by far is Ronald Haver's 1988 book "A Star Is Born". Both parts of the story - the actual production of the film and the later attempts to restore it to its original form are covered in much more detail and with greater authenticity. With extraordinary care and skill, Haver re-creates the Hollywood of the early fifties, and the making of the movie in all its aspects. In comparison, the Lorna Luft book is a much flimsier effort.

The authorship of A Star Is Born: Judy Garland and the Film that Got Away is attributed to Lorna Luft and Jeffrey Vance. Often, a celebrity-penned book seems to have been crafted by the second author—the professional writer hired to “help” the celebrity/writer. In this book, however, it seems that Lorna Luft wrote her passages herself, for her voice is distinct. There are chapters devoted to film history, and those are likely the ones written by Vance. The book starts with a Vance-written chapter about the two versions of A Star Is Born that preceded Garland’s version. The earliest was entitled What Price Hollywood? and was made in 1932. Its basic plot found its way into the first A Star is Born film, made in 1937 and starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March. That film is a classic in its own right. Her film career washed up at age 31, Garland and her then husband Sid Luft decided to remake A Star Is Born as a musical vehicle. About half of this book is taken up with Luft painstakingly explaining the differences between the Garland version versus the Gaynor version. That is mildly interesting, but it does seem to drag on. What make Luft’s description worth reading is her “asides” when she tells of her reaction to seeing her mother’s film for the first time when she, Luft, was a grown woman. For the most part, Luft doesn’t shy away from also telling us about her mother’s addictions and her father’s failures and shortcomings. She does soft-pedal a bit, but that’s to be expected from a devoted daughter. Vance takes over after this passage to tell us about the Streisand remake. This fairly short chapter is fascinating, showing how the director and Streisand clashed over Streisand’s vision for the film, and how ultimately Ms. Streisand exercised her contractual prerogative to cut the film herself. And finally, the best chapter comes again from Luft. She tells the engrossing tale of how Garland’s A Star Is Born was restored to the print that we now can see and enjoy. Much of the cut footage had been destroyed, but through the hard work of the person who took on the task of restoration and some lucky discoveries, the film was mostly restored to the original vision of Garland and her husband. Lorna Luft’s joy at this is very poignant. And to make the book even better—for Garland fans, especially—Lorna tells of the importance her mother has had to the world and how she feels her mother is always with her. She tells us proudly that if we want a sense of the real Judy Garland, we must see A Star Is Born. I’ve seen it several times, but after reading this book, I plan to look for its next showing on Turner Classic Movies.

Timed with the release of director-actor Bradley Cooper's 2018 film version of "A Star Is Born", Turner Classic Movies presents a book about ALL the versions of "A Star Is Born." It makes for an addictive read. As Margo Channing said in "All About Eve", "fasten your seatbelts!" The saga of "A Star Is Born" is a wild, up and down, bumpy ride. The story has been through the good (the 1937 version with Janet Gaynor and Fredrick March), the superb (the 1954 version directed by George Cukor; starring Judy Garland and James Mason) and the bad and the ugly (the 1976 "ego trip" version starring Barbra Streisand). As an added bonus, the book is packed with photos from every version (many in color), printed on beautiful, glossy pages. Cooper's 2018 film might be the fifth version of "A Star Is Born"-- IF you count "What Price Hollywood" as the film that inspired everything to begin with. In "What Price Hollywood?", a movie struck girl named Mary is mentored by an alcoholic director, but does not marry him. Producer David O'Selznick felt that "What Price Hollywood?" didn't realize its full potential. "A Star Is Born" (1937) includes characters and situations from a short story called "It Happened In Hollywood." That story gives us aspiring star Esther Blodgett and fading matinee idol Norman Maine. The drowning death of actor John Bowers, and incidents from the lives of actors John Gilbert and John Barrymore, found their way into the "A Star Is Born" plot. The 1937 "A Star Is Born" serves as a good template for the full-force musical drama version in 1954. Film historian Jeffrey Vance's chapter on Barbra Streisand's 1976 version is mercifully brief. Moving the story from Hollywood to a world of "sex, drugs, and rock and roll" in the mid-1970's, and full of "feminist statements" by Streisand, the film is nothing but a star on an insulting and ludicrous ego trip. And critics quickly smelled a stinker. Vincent Canby said that Barbra Streisand "never plays to or with the other actors. She does A Star Is Born as a solo turn." Pauline Kael found Streisand's version so "truthless, {Streisand} can't play it." Streisand's version belongs in the trash, but it was Judy Garland's 1954 version that was vandalized, thanks to the preposterous post-premiere editing ordered by Warner Bros. "money man" Harry Warner. Still, the 1954 version is the one we remember the most, because it delivers the most emotional jolts, fueled by Judy Garland's dynamic talents. The bulk of this book belongs to the trials and tribulations of Judy Garland's "A Star Is Born", and deservedly so. Lorna Luft, daughter of Judy Garland and her husband, producer-manager Sid Luft, details it all in a compelling, precise, and often heartbreaking manner. Hollywood is often a duplicitous, insensitive town. Nowhere is that more apparent than in the way the 1954 "A Star Is Born" was mishandled. Regardless of whatever industry baggage or personal demons Judy Garland brought to "A Star Is Born", she delivered a tour-de-force performance on screen. The film, running three hours, opened to rave reviews. Still, Harry Warner demanded the film be cut by 27 minutes, to a run time of two hours and 34 minutes. The cuts ruined the emotional and dramatic flow of the film, and robbed Garland of the Academy Award she deserved. The industry message to Garland was devastating, but direct: "You can give your heart and soul to the movies, honey, but Hollywood isn't going to award you for it." The 1954 "A Star Is Born" has been restored to near its original length (now at 2 hours and 54 minutes) twice; by film historian Ronald Haver in 1983, and again in 2010. The sad part is that director George Cukor and star Judy Garland were no longer alive to see their film be reborn and reclaimed as a masterpiece. Lorna Luft writes of further family drama caused by her autobiography "Me & My Shadows: Life With Judy Garland", and the subsequent award-winning TV movie starring Judy Davis and Tammy Blanchard. Sid Luft resented both the autobiography and TV movie. Lorna and her dad made a sort of peace before his death, but things were never the same. They seldom saw each other in person after that. Some elements of "A Star Is Born" still hit too uncomfortably close to home. The book concludes with a mention of the 2018 version. With the story set in the music industry, you might think this film is close to the dreadful 1976 Streisand version. The surprise is that, emotionally, it is much closer to the 1954 version. But director-actor Bradley Cooper does something much more extraordinary here. His film is not so much a remake or, far worse, a retread "reimagining", but a stunning revitalization. Cooper rejiggers everything just enough to make the story spin and live in 2018. Lady Gaga (Stefani Germanotta) is a major revelation-- just as Judy Garland was in 1954. Who would dream that Lady Gaga is a soul sister to Judy Garland?
